The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in Scotland is involved with designing industry specific safety courses, giving support to voluntary groups and running training courses on home and road safety. Some 4,000 people die annually from accidents in the home in Scotland, where it is the primary cause of death for those aged between one and 39 years. The Society also works closely with local authorities providing information about home safety for the public. The Society also publicizes the problem of traffic accidents on Scottish roads, where one person dies each day.

Parents must keep the house safe and free from risks of injury when a toddler is around. Various safety precautionary measures in all parts of the house including the nursery, crib bedroom, hallways, stairs and kitchen are presented.

A list of 20 essential safety items that every home should have is presented. The safety and health of tenants living in houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) are being compromised due to local authorities' difficulties in ensuring maintenance and management, particularly for fire protection. The authorities may not be aware of the HMOs due to the landlords' and tenants' failure to report them. The HMOs may only be identified after an accident. Birmingham City Council has a Housing Action Team (HAT) which has published information packs for tenants and landlords to raise awareness of their legal responsibilities and rights. The activities and publications of HAT are examined.

A survey of a registered practice with 53,587 patients in Northern Ireland, reveals that most patients report their accidents mainly through an Accident and Emergency department or directly for primary care. Accidents occured at the annual rate of 117.6 per every thousand of registered patients. Most accidents happen to those under four years and those over 60 years, and most happen at home. Accient prevention should therefore form part of elderly observation and child health programmes. Patients should also be informed that they should take minor accidents to their doctor.

Such issues as national healthcare, violent crime, guns, teenage pregnancy, AIDS, women's health as well as injuries and illnesses incurred by employees off the job are expected to be the leading issues that will confront safety, health and environmental professionals in 1994. The Clinton Administration, together with employers and the workers' sector, will lead the drive towards resolving these vital issues. The government is expected to highlight the role of education in solving these issues.

Ergonomics is the science of discovering the most efficient way of doing work. It's place in business is manifested in the workplace, which includes machinery, work organization, workers and management. The implementation of a successful ergonomics program will depend on how well employees are trained, how feasible goals and changes are designed, and how open communication channels are between work groups, particularly between management and production. Improvements may then proceed based on the coordination of these three steps.
