Developing a robust artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) system with a self-powered triboelectric sensor for harsh environment is challenging because environmental fluctuations are reflected in triboelectric signals. This study presents an environmentally robust triboelectric tire monitoring system with deep learning to capture driving information in the triboelectric signals generated from tire-road friction. The optimization of the process and structure of a laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode layer in the triboelectric tire is conducted, enabling the tire to detect universal driving information for vehicles/robotic mobility, including rotation speeds of 200-2000 rpm and contact fractions of line. Employing a hybrid model combining short-term Fourier transform with a convolution neural network-long short-term memory, the LIG-based triboelectric tire monitoring (LTTM) system decouples the driving information, such as traffic lines and road states, from varied environmental conditions of humidity (10%-90%) and temperatures (50-70 °C). The real-time line and road state recognition of the LTTM system is confirmed on a mobile platform across diverse environmental conditions, including fog, dampness, intense sunlight, and heat shimmer. Fluorescence of the vast majority of natural opsin-based photoactive proteins is extremely low, in accordance with their functions that depend on efficient transduction of absorbed light energy. However, several recently proposed classes of engineered rhodopsins with enhanced fluorescence, along with the discovery of a new natural highly fluorescent rhodopsin, NeoR, opened a way to exploit these transmembrane proteins as fluorescent sensors and draw more attention to studies on this untypical rhodopsin property. Here, we review the available data on the fluorescence of the retinal chromophore in microbial and animal rhodopsins and their photocycle intermediates, as well as different isomers of the protonated retinal Schiff base in various solvents and the gas phase. Microbial rhodopsin, a significant contributor to sustaining life through light harvesting, holds untapped potential for carbon fixation. Here, we construct an artificial photosynthesis system which combines the proton-pumping ability of rhodopsin with an extracellular electron uptake mechanism, establishing a pathway to drive photoelectrosynthetic CO2 fixation by Ralstonia eutropha (also known as Cupriavidus necator) H16, a facultatively chemolithoautotrophic soil bacterium. R. eutropha is engineered to heterologously express an extracellular electron transfer pathway of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and Gloeobacter rhodopsin (GR). Employing GR and the outer-membrane conduit MtrCAB from S. oneidensis, extracellular electrons and GR-driven proton motive force are integrated into R. eutropha’s native electron transport chain (ETC). Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the photoelectrochemical system splits water to supply electrons to R. eutropha via the Mtr outer-membrane route. The light-activated proton pump - GR, supported by canthaxanthin as an antenna, powers ATP synthesis and reverses the ETC to regenerate NADH/NADPH, facilitating R. eutropha’s biomass synthesis from CO2. Overexpression of a carbonic anhydrase further enhances CO2 fixation. For over a century, enzyme immobilisation has been proven to be a superior strategy to improve catalytic activity and reusability and ensure easy separation, easy operation, and reduced cost. Enzyme immobilisation allows for an easier separation of the enzyme from the reaction mixture, thus simplifying downstream processing. This technology protects the enzyme from degradation or inactivation by harsh reaction conditions, making it more robust and suitable to be used in various applications. Recent strategies of immobilisation methods, such as adsorption, cross-linking, entrapment or encapsulation, and covalent bonding, were critically reviewed. These strategies have shown promising results in improving enzyme stability, activity, and reusability in various applications. A recent development in enzyme immobilisation in nanomaterials and agrowaste renewable carriers is underlined in the current review. Furthermore, the use of nanomaterials and agrowaste carriers in enzyme immobilisation has gained significant attention due to their unique properties, such as high surface area, high mass transfer, biocompatibility, and sustainability. These materials offer promising outcomes for developing more efficient and sustainable immobilised enzymes. This state-of-the-art strategy allows for better control over enzyme reactions and enhances their reusability, leading to more cost-effective and environmentally friendly processes. Ecchordosis physaliphora (EP) is a benign notochordal remnant, which is often an incidental finding; however, it can rarely present with neurological symptoms. We performed a systematic review of the literature for cases of symptomatic EP published in PubMed, Web of Science and Embase from January 1982 to May 2023. This is the largest review to date and revealed 60 cases including ours. Headache (55%) and CSF rhinorrhea (32%) were the most frequent clinical manifestations. The majority of symptomatic EP lesions were located in the prepontine region (77%) and required surgical resection (75%). EP should be considered in patients with neurologic symptoms in the setting of prepontine or posterior sphenoid sinus lesions. Globally, many individuals struggle with Alzheimer's disease (AD), an unrelenting and incapacitating neurodegenerative condition. Despite notable research endeavors, effective remedies for AD remain constrained, prompting the exploration of innovative therapeutic avenues. Within this context, silica-based nanoplatforms have emerged with pronounced potential due to their unique attributes like expansive surface area, customizable pore dimensions, and compatibility with living systems. These nanoplatforms hold promise as prospective interventions for AD. This assessment provides a comprehensive overview encompassing various forms of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), techniques for formulation, and their applications in biomedicine. The extraction of silica particles from rice husks has been extensively studied. This review aims to present the most efficient approach to harnessing rice husk biomass and converting silica into high-value-added materials for direct applications to address current challenges like water purification. Rice husks, as a residue from agriculture, had been largely used as a source of power through direct incineration in major rice-producing countries. However, rice husks present an intriguing opportunity as a renewable source of SiO2, offering a low-cost adsorbent with a high surface area and ease of functionalization that can be transformed into diverse mesoporous silica structures or composites, enabling applications in catalysis, drug delivery, water treatment, etc. This dual potential of rice husks can be harnessed by combining bio-oil and syngas production through pyrolysis with the efficient extraction of SiO2, ensuring the comprehensive utilization of the biomass. This review not only highlights the immense potential of silica nanoparticles but also serves as a roadmap for future investigations, with the ultimate aim of harnessing the full capabilities of this renewable and sustainable resource, contributing to the circular economy by yielding valuable by-products. Second home tourism has emerged as a significant area of research because of the intersection between tourism and migration that has been encouraged by new forms of mobility. The social and economic aspects of second homes have been studied extensively, yet research on the environmental impacts of second home tourism remains limited. The paper aims to review second home research in general, identify environmental policies and the relevance to second home tourism, and discuss the applicable environmental research themes undertaken to date and those that should still be researched. Plasma technology stands at the forefront of numerous industrial applications, offering versatile solutions from materials processing to aerospace engineering. This study employs a single Langmuir probe technique operating at atmospheric pressure to scrutinize the transformative impact of silica seeding on low-temperature arc plasma. The investigation unveils a dynamic interplay of electrons and ions within the plasma, unveiling key electrical properties. The I–V electrical properties of the arcs plasma before seeding, having a floating voltage of –39 V, demonstrate electron and ion currents for varied probe voltages. The electrons’ density is calculated to be 2.11 × 1013 m–3, and the electrons’ temperature is at 6.25 eV. The I–V characteristics show a floating potential of about –35 V and –37 V after seeding an arc plasma using silica in the presence of aluminum oxide (2 % by weight) powder and grain, respectively. After seeding, it is discovered that the electron temperature falls to 1.18 eV for powder while 1.16 eV for grain and electron density rises to 2 × 1016 m–3 for powder and 1.84 × 1016 m–3 for grain. In addition, a notable fall in electron temperature and a discernible rise in electron density are seen. This non-equilibrium behavior is related to silica’s catalytic function, which is enhanced by the presence of aluminum oxide. Additionally, increased ionizing activity brought on by inelastic electron collisions causes the electron temperatures in the silica-seeded arcs plasma to rise with discharge voltage. These findings can be essential for enhancing plasma-based technologies in a variety of industrial applications because they provide insightful information on how silica seeding affects arc plasma properties. Metal‐organic framework (MOF) composites based on MOFs‐wrapped metals or metallic compounds (denoted as M/MC@MOFs) are an important class of materials that integrate M/MCs and MOFs. MOFs can fix and confine M/MCs to regulate their size, prevent uncontrollable aggregation, and enhance the exposure and ordered arrangement of active sites. In turn, M/MCs support the MOFs to enhance their stability and realize more targeted properties. In this review, the features and application scope of different M/MC@MOF synthesis methods are explored, considering the influential factors and regulation modes of the M/MC–MOFs integration. Additionally, the performances of the M/MC@MOF composites are comprehensively discussed, and the underlying mechanisms are clarified. The performance of M/MC@MOFs is dependent on the orderly synergy between the MOFs and M/MCs. MOFs can sieve and transfer specific molecules to the M/MC surface, whereas the robust interface provides new charge/energy‐transfer pathways, which enhance the activity and selectivity of the composites for diverse molecules. CLA is an economically and zoonotically important disease in the world. The lack of a therapeutic procedure limits the treatment mainly to surgical intervention. Therapeutic efficacies of the intra-abscess instillation of O3-oil and H2 O2-gly in CLA in small ruminants were tested. One hundred eighty affected sheep and goats were allocated to five groups as follows: 1) NC (no intervention), 2) PC1 (injection of olive oil), 3) PC2 (injection of glycerin), 4) injection of O3-oil, 5) injection of H2 O2-gly. Samples of abscess contents were collected for microbiological examination prior to injection. The VAs were measured on T0, then with two-week intervals on T1 and T2. On T0 and T2, VAs were as NC (2.9 ± 0.5; 3.5 ± 0.5), PC1 (3.4 ± 0.7; 6.6 ± 1), PC2 (3.1 ± 0.7; 3.3 ± 0.9), O3-oil (3.3 ± 0.4; 0.4 ± 0.4), and H2 O2-gly (4.6 ± 0.4, 1.5 ± 0.4). Statistical analysis showed a significant decrease in VAs, merely in treatment groups. CP was recovered in 48.3% of bacteriological samples. The results of this study suggested that O3-oil and H2 O2-gly would be reliable therapeutic agents for treating and controlling CLA. Ozone showed apparently a higher efficacy and caused more rapid shrinkage/recession of the abscesses, compared to hydrogen peroxide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proton-pump rhodopsin (PPR) in marine microbes can convert solar energy to bioavailable chemical energy. Whereas bacterial PPR has been extensively studied, counterparts in microeukaryotes are less explored, and the relative importance of the two groups is poorly understood. Here, we sequenced whole-assemblage metatranscriptomes and investigated the diversity and expression dynamics of PPR in microbial eukaryotes and prokaryotes at a continental shelf and a slope site in the northern South China Sea. Data showed the whole PPRs transcript pool was dominated by Proteorhodopsins and Xanthorhodopsins, followed by Bacteriorhodopsin-like proteins, dominantly contributed by prokaryotes both in the number and expression levels of PPR unigenes, although at the continental slope station, microeukaryotes and prokaryotes contributed similarly in transcript abundance. Furthermore, eukaryotic PPRs are mainly contributed by dinoflagellates and showed significant correlation with nutrient concentrations. Green light-absorbing PPRs were mainly distributed in >3 μm organisms (including microeukaryotes and their associated bacteria), especially at surface layer at the shelf station, whereas blue light-absorbing PPRs dominated the <3 μm (mainly bacterial) communities at both study sites, especially at deeper layers at the slope station. Our study portrays a comparative PPR genotype and expression landscape for prokaryotes and eukaryotes in a subtropical marginal sea, suggesting PPR's role in niche differentiation and adaptation among marine microbes. Purpose: To investigate whether the clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis of endogenous infectious endophthalmitis (EIE) have changed over the past 5 years., Methods: Retrospectively analyze all articles about EIE published in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases from 2017 to 2021., Results: A total of 128 patients and 147 eyes (46 left and 60 right) were included in the study. The mean age at diagnosis was 51 ± 19 years. The most common risk factors were diabetes and intravenous drug use. From 2017 to 2021, Klebsiella was the most common pathogenic microorganism (22%), and vitreous culture had the highest positivity rate. The most common complaint was blurred vision. The mean visual acuity (logMAR) at onset was 2.84, and the clinical symptoms were vitreal inflammation and opacity (63%), ocular pain (37%), and conjunctival congestion (36%). The ocular inflammation could be reduced by intraocular antibiotics or vitrectomy. However, the visual prognosis, with a mean logMAR of 2.73; only 50% of the eyes reached a visual acuity level of finger count and above. Changes in diagnostics over the past 5 years have mainly manifested as more diverse microorganism culture methods. In addition to conventional culture methods, PCR, sputum culture and aqueous humour culture are also commonly used for the diagnosis of pathogenic bacteria, improving the positive culture rate and visual prognosis., Conclusion: The prognosis of EIE is poor. Purpose: Targeted cancer therapies have been responsible for a dramatic shift in treatment strategies for cancer, and the number of drugs, classes, and indications are continually growing. Neuro-ophthalmic complications of these medications are an uncommon but important subset of adverse events which profoundly impact vision. This review aims to collate studies and reports of known neuro-ophthalmic complications of targeted therapies and describe their management., Methods: The anti-cancer drugs included in the review were any drugs targeting specific molecules involved in the cancer disease process. PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched using the generic names of each drug and keywords of neuro-ophthalmic conditions. The prescribing information published by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for each drug was also reviewed., Results: Several classes of targeted anti-cancer drugs were found to cause neuro-ophthalmic adverse effects. Immune checkpoint inhibitors are responsible for a raft of immune-related adverse events such as optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, PRES, and myasthenia gravis. Therapies with anti-VEGF activity can provoke posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy, which commonly presents with visual loss and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Inhibitors of BCR-ABL1, VEGF, ALK, and proteasomes have all been linked to optic nerve disorders which can have debilitating consequences for vision., Conclusion: The neuro-ophthalmic complications of modern anti-cancer drugs can limit or necessitate the withdrawal of these life-prolonging medications. The domestic duck is classified as a specialist filter-feeder bird living in the water. These birds also use grazing and pecking as terrestrial feeding methods. The tongues of domestic ducks, similar to those of other Anseriformes, exhibit numerous types and shapes of mechanical papillae that serve a number of purposes when collecting food. The current study attempts to describe the morphological characteristics of the tongue as well as the mechanical papillae's development. In addition, the study aims to determine whether the papillae observed post-hatching (P2) exhibit similar morphology to those found in adult female avian species, as well as to investigate the readiness of the tongue to fulfill its feeding function following hatching. The comprehensive examination of lingual mucosa is examined about the structural modifications necessary for this variety of feeding activities. In this study, the tongues of nine young (P2) and adult female were used. The tongue had three distinct parts: the apex, which had a lingual nail on its ventral surface; the body, which exhibits numerous small and large conical papillae on its lateral sides and a lingual prominence in the caudal region; and the root, which is covered with numerous conical papillae of varying sizes. Conical, filiform, and hair-like mechanical papillae, the three types of food filtration apparatus, are present in both stages. The intraoral transfer involves several structures, including the median groove, lingual combs, and the rostral border of the lingual prominence. The rostral border of the lingual prominence is characterized by distinct rows of conical papillae. The histological analysis demonstrated the presence of both keratinized and nonkeratinized epithelium on different tongue regions. The lingual salivary glands in the rostral and caudal lingual salivary glands exhibit a pronounced periodic acid-Schiff-positive reaction. Additionally, the yellow adipose tissue and sensory receptors, namely the Grandry and Herbst corpuscles, which collectively form the bill-tongue organ that monitors the movement of food. These results conclude the presence of microstructural species-specific alterations in specific tongue areas of domestic ducks' lingual mucosa. These modifications are formed by the filtering mechanism and terrestrial feeding mechanisms, such as grazing or pecking. Following hatching, the tongue of the domestic duck undergoes significant development, primarily in preparation for grazing activities. The anatomical and histological structure of the young (P2) tongue exhibited similarities to that of the adult female domestic duck while also displaying certain variations that could potentially be attributed to the bird's habitat and mode of feeding. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The results of this study concluded that the domestic duck exhibit a complex tongue structure characterized by the arrangement and morphology of its mechanical papillae, the presence of the lingual prominence with distinctive shape and the lingual comb. These features are believed to be adaptations that enable the duck to actively and efficiently filter food particles from water, serving as its primary feeding mechanism. Additionally, the tongue of domestic ducks is specifically adapted to facilitate various terrestrial activities, such as grazing and pecking. This adaptation is achieved through the presence of conical papillae and a lingual nail. The veterinarian presented a 5-year-old HF crossbred cow with a full-term pregnancy that caused severe abdominal strain. On per-vaginal examination, the cervix was found to be fully dilated, with palpable multiple limbs of the foetus. After proper lubrication of the birth canal, the foetus was successfully delivered. The veterinarian diagnosed the condition as polymelia of the hind limbs. The postoperative care of the cow included treatment with antibiotics and antiinflammatory drugs. Magnetic conversion can be accomplished in a variety of ways, as organic molecules with switchable magnetic characteristics offer numerous technological applications. It is crucial to find magnetism-switchable systems because, in the field of organic magnetic materials, the redox-induced magnetic reversal is very simple to achieve and shows significant applications. Herein, we computationally design isoalloxazine-based diradicals through oxidizing N10 and adding a nitroxide to C8 as the spin source (i.e. 8-nitroxide-isoalloxazine 10-oxide, an m-phenylene-like nitroxide diradical expanded with a redox unit as a side-modulator) and its N1/N5-hydrogenated/protonated diradical derivatives and introducing substituents (–OH, –NH2, and –NO2) to C6. We demonstrate that the basically modified structure exhibits ferromagnetic (FM) characteristics with a magnetic coupling constant (J) of 561.3 cm−1 calculated at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level, obeying the meta-phenylene-mediated diradical character, and dihydrogenation can lead to an AFM diradical with considerably large J (−976.1 cm−1). Surprisingly, protonation at N1 or N5 can lead to distinctly different magnetic variations (561.3 → −1602.9 cm−1 at N1 versus 561.3 → 379.1 cm−1 at N5). Analyses indicate that small singlet–triplet energy gaps and small energy gaps between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO, LUMO) of the closed shell singlet state are the key features of these isoalloxazine diradicals, and aromaticity variations, significant spin delocalization from the π-conjugated structure and spin polarization from the non-Kekule structure induced by modification are responsible for the magnetic conversion. Furthermore, the spin alternation rule, the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) effect, and the SOMO–SOMO energy splitting of the triplet state are used to analyze these distinct variations. This work provides a novel understanding of the structures and characteristics of modified isoalloxazine diradicals, as well as essential details for the intricate design and characterization of new isoalloxazine-based potential organic magnetic switches. Graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g‐CNQDs)‐based colorimetric sensors are typically solution‐based and hence incompatible with wearable electronics. Today's competitive technology demands safe and reliable, high‐performance sensors suitable for integration with sophisticated electronics—all at a low cost. Herein, a flexible and reusable solid‐state fluoride ion sensor manufactured by combining the intriguing surface properties of laser‐patterned carbon (LP‐C) with the sensitivity of g‐CNQDs is reported. LP‐C is obtained by direct IR‐laser writing onto polyimide films, and g‐CNQDs are synthesized via a solvent‐free and zero‐waste green process. The hybrid of LP‐C and g‐CNQDs (g‐CNQDs/LP‐C), mimics the natural enzyme horseradish peroxidase and oxidizes the chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'‐tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of H2O2 in acidic media. The highly selective and user‐friendly nanozyme sensors feature a lower limit of detection of 0.568 ± 0.006 × 10−6m (23.8 ± 1.5 µg L−1) with linearity in the range of 0.5 × 10−6 to 100 × 10−6m. A sensing mechanism based on the electronic transitions of g‐CNQDs and LP‐C, the two variants of nitrogen‐containing carbon used in this work, is established. In this work, we focus on the simplest mixed particle pair (one reactive particle: P1, and one inert particle: P2) to investigate the joint effects of the Stefan Reynolds number (Resf), the particle Reynolds number (Re), separation distance normalized by particle diameter (L), and relative orientation (α) on the drag force exerting on each particle by particle-resolved direct numerical simulations. The results show that when particles are placed in a tandem arrangement, the blocking effect on P2 is weakened/strengthened with negative/positive Stefan flow since the effective diameter of P1 is smaller/larger than its real diameter. When L = 1.25, Re = 3, and particles are placed in tandem, the drag force of P1 decreases as Resf increases, but the reduction of the drag force decreases as Re increases. Under such conditions, the positive Stefan flow induces the repulsion between the two particles; thus, the drag force of P2 increases as Resf increases. When Resf = 3 and P2 is located downstream, the repulsive force felt by P1 can partially offset the drag force at L = 1.25, Re = 3. Moreover, the negative/positive Stefan flow enhances/weakens the drag force of P2 when it is located upstream. The Stefan flow has a negligible effect on the drag force of P2 when L = 3. The purpose of this research was to look for primordial germ cells in male gonads at various stages of the pheasant embryos. Primordial germ cells are cells that differentiate into sperm or oocyte and are important for the transmission of genetic information across generations. In this study, embryos were extracted in embryonic days 8-24. The primordial germ cells were recognized in paraffin and resin tissue sections on days 8 to 10 of embryogenesis owing to the specific properties of these cells, which included a large size, large nucleus and nucleolus, and little cytoplasm. The primordial germ cells in the testes were identified using histochemical and immunostaining techniques. Periodic Acid-Schiff method, immunohistochemistry using stage-specific embryonic antigen-1, alkaline phosphatase and toluidine blue staining were used to identify primordial germ cells. Germ cells were detected only in semithin sections at older ages (10-24 days). Moreover, the response of these cells was negative, at all ages, to alkaline phosphatase, Periodic Acid-Schiff staining and stage-specific embryonic antigen-1 reaction. The findings of this study revealed that primordial germ cells in the testicular tissue of pheasant embryos of all ages tested responded adversely to histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. With advances in nanotechnology, nanoparticles have come to be regarded as carriers of therapeutic agents and have been widely studied to overcome various diseases in the biomedical field. Among these particles, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have been investigated as potential nanocarriers to deliver drug molecules to various target sites in the body. This review introduces the physicochemical properties of MSNs and synthesis procedures of MSN-based nanoplatforms. Moreover, we focus on updating biomedical applications of MSNs as a carrier of therapeutic or diagnostic cargo and review clinical trials using silica-nanoparticle-based systems. Herein, on the one hand, we pay attention to the pharmaceutical advantages of MSNs, including nanometer particle size, high surface area, and porous structures, thus enabling efficient delivery of high drug-loading content. On the other hand, we look through biosafety and toxicity issues associated with MSN-based platforms. Based on many reports so far, MSNs have been widely applied to construct tissue engineering platforms as well as treat various diseases, including cancer, by surface functionalization or incorporation of stimuli-responsive components. However, even with the advantageous aspects that MSNs possess, there are still considerations, such as optimizing physicochemical properties or dosage regimens, regarding use of MSNs in clinics. Progress in synthesis procedures and scale-up production as well as a thorough investigation into the biosafety of MSNs would enable design of innovative and safe MSN-based platforms in biomedical fields. This paper investigates the suitability of groundwater for domestic and agricultural use in the Rafsanjan plain, southwest part of the Daranjir–Saghand basin, Iran. Fifty-five groundwater samples were collected and analyzed by six methods including the water quality index (WQI), Schoeller diagram, irrigation water quality (IWQ) parameters, Piper diagram, US salinity diagram and Wilcox diagram. The spatial distribution maps of chemical parameters and groundwater quality indices were plotted using the IDW method in GIS. The results showed a low concentration of major ions in the southeastern part and a high concentration from the central part towards northwestern part of the plain. The concentration of major ions in groundwater was strongly affected by groundwater flow, geological setting and the existence of the evaporative layers in the studied area. Moreover, results revealed that most of samples exceeded the acceptable limits recommended by the WHO and ISIRI1053 standards for domestic and agricultural purposes. In most of the wells, groundwater was classified into saline and very hard categories. The analyses based on WQI values indicated that above 87% of water samples were unsuitable for drinking purposes. IWQ parameters expressed that 85%, 67%, 32%, 51%, 43% and 50% of samples had EC > 3000, Na% > 60%, MAR > 50%, KR > 1, SAR > 9 and Cl− > 350, respectively, which were unsuitable for irrigation use. The dominant hydrochemical facies of water was Na–Cl–SO4 type, and 63% and 22.8% of samples were categorized as C4S4 and C4S3 class, with very high-salinity–high-sodium hazards and very high-salinity–high-sodium hazards, respectively. It indicated that most irrigated lands in this study area were affected by different levels of salinity and sodicity hazards that caused decreases in plant growth and crop productivity. Stereology studies the quantity of biological tissue using little practice and the low price of counting and preparing tissue slices to obtain direct and accurate results. Since their establishment, the stereological techniques underwent much improvement, thus allowing more precise analysis of target structures using various approaches. Using stereological tools, advances in stereological techniques made the target tissues or organs represented by 2D instead of 3D dimensions. Process tools estimate volume, area and length. According to the exciting tissue and aims, the stereological tools perform differently. This review summarizes various stereological tools and techniques, providing brief information about the orientation method, slicer probe method, Delesse's principle, Cavalieri principle, disector, fractionator, nucleator, virtual cycloids and saucer, which are described in detail. This study aimed to investigate the major salivary glands in the southern white‐breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor) histologically and histochemically. Five adult males were included in this study. The results showed that anatomically the shape of the parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands of the Erinaceus concolor was respectively almost pear, elliptical to pyramidal and oval. Histologically, the parotid gland had serous acini and secretory cells showed negative reaction to alcian blue (AB) (pH = 2.5) and negative response to aldehyde fuchsin (AF), methylene blue (MB) and PAS stains. The submandibular gland was a mixed gland of mucous and serous acini. The mucous acini were strongly positive for PAS, AB, MB and AF. However, serous acini were week for PAS and negative against AB, MB and AF stains. The sublingual gland was purely composed of mucous acini. The mucous acini of the sublingual gland were strongly positives for PAS, AB and MB methods. While their reaction to the AF staining was negative. In conclusion, the histological and histochemical observations of the major salivary glands of the southern white‐breasted hedgehog (E. concolor) indicated that these glands shown similarities and some special different histochemical features as compared to other mammalian species. A mesoporous silica-based drug delivery system (MS@PNIPAm-PAAm NPs) was synthesized by conjugating the PNIPAm-PAAm copolymer onto the mesoporous silica (MS) surface as a gatekeeper that responds to temperature and pH changes. The drug delivery studies are carried out in vitro at different pH (7.4, 6.5, and 5.0) and temperatures (such as 25 °C and 42 °C, respectively). The surface conjugated copolymer (PNIPAm-PAAm) acts as a gatekeeper below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) (<32 °C) and as a collapsed globule structure above LCST (>32 °C), resulting in controlled drug delivery from the MS@PNIPAm-PAAm system. Furthermore, the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and cellular internalization results support the prepared MS@PNIPAm-PAAm NPs being biocompatible and readily taken up by MDA-MB-231 cells. The prepared MS@PNIPAm-PAAm NPs, with their pH-responsive drug release behavior and good biocompatibility, could be used as a drug delivery vehicle where sustained drug release at higher temperatures is required. Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have become an important part of the treatment of multiple cancers, especially for advanced melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer. Some tumors are capable of escaping immunosurveillance by stimulating checkpoints on T-cells. ICIs prevent activation of these checkpoints and thereby stimulate the immune system and indirectly the anti-tumor response. However, the use of ICIs is associated with various adverse events. Ocular side effects are rare but may have a major impact on the quality of life of the patient. Methods: A comprehensive literature search of the medical databases Web of Science, Embase and PubMed was performed. Articles that provided a comprehensive description of a case report containing 1) cancer patient(s) treated with (a combination of) immune checkpoint inhibitors, and 2) assessed occurrence of ocular adverse events, were included. A total of 290 case reports were included. Results: Melanoma (n = 179; 61.7%) and lung cancer (n = 56; 19.3%) were the most frequent reported malignancies. The primary used ICIs were nivolumab (n = 123; 42.5%) and ipilimumab (n = 116; 40.0%). Uveitis was most the common adverse event (n = 134; 46.2%) and mainly related to melanoma. Neuro-ophthalmic disorders, including myasthenia gravis and cranial nerve disorders, were the second most common adverse events (n = 71; 24.5%), mainly related to lung cancer. Adverse events affecting the orbit and the cornea were reported in 33 (11.4%) and 30 cases (10.3%) respectively. Adverse events concerning the retina were reported in 26 cases (9.0%). Conclusion: The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of all reported ocular adverse events related to the use of ICIs. The insights retrieved from this review might contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of these ocular adverse events. Particularly, the difference between actual immune-related adverse events and paraneoplastic syndromes might be relevant. In most cases, cancer develops due to abnormal cell growth and subsequent tumour formation. Due to significant constraints with current treatments, natural compounds are being explored as potential alternatives. There are now around 30 natural compounds under clinical trials for the treatment of cancer. Tulsi, or Holy Basil, of the genus Ocimum, is one of the most widely available and cost-effective medicinal plants. In India, the tulsi plant has deep religious and medicinal significance. Tulsi essential oil contains a valuable source of bioactive compounds, such as camphor, eucalyptol, eugenol, alpha-bisabolene, beta-bisabolene, and beta-caryophyllene. These compounds are proposed to be responsible for the antimicrobial properties of the leaf extracts. The anticancer effects of tulsi (Ocimum sanctum L.) have earned it the title of "queen of herbs" and "Elixir of Life" in Ayurvedic treatment. Tulsi leaves, which have high concentrations of eugenol, have been shown to have anticancer properties. In a various cancers, eugenol exerts its antitumour effects through a number of different mechanisms. In light of this, the current review focuses on the anticancer benefits of tulsi and its primary phytoconstituent, eugenol, as apotential therapeutic agent against a wide range of cancer types. In recent years, tulsi has gained popularity due to its anticancer properties. In ongoing clinical trials, a number of tulsi plant compounds are being evaluated for their potential anticancer effects. The present work attempted to provide a comprehensive description of the morphoanatomical, histological, and ultrastructural characteristics of the tongue in the desert hedgehog (Paraechinus aethiopicus), and to correlate lingual modifications to the feeding lifestyle. Five adult male hedgehogs were utilized in our investigation. The macroscopic observations revealed elongated, with a moderately pointed apex, tongue and the tongue dorsum lacks both lingual prominence and median sulcus. The main subdivisions of the tongue are radix linguae (root), corpus linguae (body), and apex linguae (apex). The tongue dorsum carries two types of mechanical (conical and filiform) and gustatory (fungiform and circumvallate) papillae. The lingual apex is characterized by the existence of a unique encapsulated muscular structure. Additionally, the lingual glands were interposed between the muscular strands and no lingual glands were detected on the lingual apex. The dorsal surface of the lingual apex exhibited the highest level of keratinization as revealed by histochemical staining while the root showed moderate staining. The topography of the tongue was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained results are important to provide basic knowledge that can contribute to better understanding of the nourishment, feeding habits and behavior in this species. Hippocampal hyperactivity is a novel pharmacological target in the treatment of schizophrenia. We hypothesized that levetiracetam (LEV), a drug binding to the synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2 A, normalizes hippocampal activity in persons with schizophrenia and can be measured using neuroimaging methods. Thirty healthy control participants and 30 patients with schizophrenia (28 treated with antipsychotic drugs), were randomly assigned to a double-blind, cross-over trial to receive a single administration of 500 mg oral LEV or placebo during two study visits. At each visit, we assessed hippocampal function using resting state fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALFF), cerebral blood flow (CBF) with arterial spin labeling, and hippocampal blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal during a scene processing task. After placebo treatment, we found significant elevations in hippocampal fALFF in patients with schizophrenia, consistent with hippocampal hyperactivity. Additionally, hippocampal fALFF in patients with schizophrenia after LEV treatment did not significantly differ from healthy control participants receiving placebo, suggesting that LEV may normalize hippocampal hyperactivity. In contrast to our fALFF findings, we did not detect significant group differences or an effect of LEV treatment on hippocampal CBF. In the context of no significant group difference in BOLD signal, we found that hippocampal recruitment during scene processing is enhanced by LEV more significantly in schizophrenia. We conclude that pharmacological modulation of hippocampal hyperactivity in schizophrenia can be studied with some neuroimaging methods, but not others. Additional studies in different cohorts, employing alternate neuroimaging methods and study designs, are needed to establish levetiracetam as a treatment for schizophrenia., (© 2023. Smart polymers are a special class of polymers, which respond to the various external stimuli by changing their properties. Recent developments in synthetic polymer chemistry have provided the possibility of designing and synthesis of various new stimuli‐responsive polymers. These stimuli‐responsive polymers can be used to prepare smart drug delivery systems (DDS) by grafting them on various nanomaterials. The main aim of this review is to present collective information on various stimuli‐responsive polymers grafted on silica nanoparticles for the preparation of smart DDS. The stimuli covered are pH, temperature, redox, reactive oxygen species (ROS), glucose concentration, enzymes, magnetic field, and so forth. The structures of various stimuli‐responsive polymers are shown with their relevance to the preparation of smart DDS. The crucial roles of macromolecular design and synthesis of smart polymers in the development of stimuli‐responsive DDS are discussed with examples from literature and the challenges that still exist in this area of research are presented. Background and Hypothesis Stress during adolescence is a major risk factor for schizophrenia. We have found previously in rats that adolescent stress caused, in adulthood, behavioral changes and enhanced ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine system activity, which were associated with dysregulation of the excitatory-inhibitory (E/I) balance in the ventral hippocampus (vHip). Levetiracetam, an anticonvulsant drug, regulates the release of neurotransmitters, including glutamate, via SV2A inhibition. It also modulates parvalbumin interneuron activity via Kv3.1 channels. Therefore, levetiracetam could ameliorate deficits in the E/I balance. We tested whether levetiracetam attenuate the adolescent stress-induced behavioral changes, vHip hyperactivity, and enhanced VTA dopamine system activity in adult rats. Study Design Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to a combination of daily footshock (postnatal day [PD] 31–40), and three 1 h-restraint stress sessions (at PD31, 32, and 40). In adulthood (PD62), animals were tested for anxiety responses (elevated plus-maze and light-dark box), social interaction, and cognitive function (novel object recognition test). The activity of vHip pyramidal neurons and VTA dopamine neurons was also recorded. Study Results Adolescent stress produced anxiety-like responses and impaired sociability and cognitive function. Levetiracetam (10 mg/kg) reversed these changes. Levetiracetam also reversed the increased VTA dopamine neuron population activity and the enhanced firing rate of vHip pyramidal neurons induced by adolescent stress. The rat is one of the most commonly used animals in biological research and experimental investigations in medicine. The ultrafine structural components of the epithelium differ depending on the anatomy of the animal and the papilla type. Animal adaptation to food types and environmental circumstances may also be linked to morphological diversity. In the current study, seven male Wistar rat tongues were investigated. For scanning electron microscope (SEM), two rat tongues were immersed in a 10% formalin solution and the other two rat tongues were immersed in a 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution. The tongues of three rats were fixed for regular histological evaluation using triple staining. The three primary components of the Wistar rat tongue are the apex, body and root. The apex had a rounded and bifurcated shape. Filiform papillae and gustatory papillae were easily identified on the dorsal side of the tongue. There were three forms of gustatory papillae; fungiform papillae, vallate papillae and foliate papillae. The purpose of this study was to expose the tongue morphology of the Wistar rat species, which is widely used in investigations. Also, we wanted to show that formalin fixation can be utilized for morphological research in SEM. Finally, the Wistar rat tongue was thoroughly investigated and compared to those of other species. Breast cancer (BC) currently occupies the second rank in cancer-related global female deaths. Although consistent awareness and improved diagnosis have reduced mortality in recent years, late diagnosis and resistant response still limit the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs (CDs), leading to relapse with consequent invasion and metastasis. Treatment with CDs is indeed well-versed but it is badly curtailed with accompanying side effects and inadequacies of site-specific drug delivery. As a result, drug carriers ensuring stealth delivery and sustained drug release with improved pharmacokinetics and biodistribution are urgently needed. Core–shell mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) have recently been a cornerstone in this context, attributed to their high surface area, low density, robust functionalization, high drug loading capacity, size–shape-controlled functioning, and homogeneous shell architecture, enabling stealth drug delivery. Recent interest in using MSNPs as drug delivery vehicles has been due to their functionalization and size–shape-driven versatilities. With such insights, this article focuses on the preparation methods and drug delivery mechanisms of MSNPs, before discussing their emerging utility in BC treatment. The information compiled herein could consolidate the database for using inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) as BC drug delivery vehicles in terms of design, application and resolving post-therapy complications. Mesoporous silica SBA-15 was prepared via sol-gel synthesis and functionalized with different types of organosilanes containing various organic functional groups: (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (SBA-15-NH2), (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane (SBA-15-SH), triethoxymethylsilane (SBA-15-CH3), triethoxyphenylsilane (SBA-15-Ph), and (3-isocynatopropyl)triethoxysilane (SBA-15-NCO). The prepared materials were investigated as drug delivery systems for naproxen. As model drugs, naproxen acid (HNAP) and its sodium salt (NaNAP) were used. Mentioned medicaments belong to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The prepared materials were characterized by different analytical methods such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis (N2), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), 1H, 13C and 23Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H, 13C and 23Na ss-NMR). The abovementioned analytical techniques confirmed the successful grafting of functional groups to the SBA-15 surface and the adsorption of drugs after the impregnation process. The BET area values decreased from 927 m2 g−1 for SBA-15 to 408 m2 g−1 for SBA-15-NCO. After drug encapsulation, a more significant decrease in surface area was observed due to the filling of pores with drug molecules, while the most significant decrease was observed for the SBA-15-NH2 material (115 m2 g−1 for NaNAP and 101 m2 g−1 for HNAP). By combining TG and nitrogen adsorption results, the occurrence of functional groups and the affinity of drugs to the carriers' surface were calculated. The dominant factor was the volume of functional groups and intermolecular interactions. The highest drug affinity values were observed for phenyl and amine-modified materials (SBA-15-Ph = 1.379 μmol m−2 mmol−1 for NaNAP, 1.761 μmol m−2 mmol−1 for HNAP and SBA-15-NH2 = 1.343 μmol m−2 mmol−1 for NaNAP, 1.302 μmol m−2 mmol−1 for HNAP) due to the formation of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, respectively. Drug release properties and kinetic studies were performed at t = 37 °C (normal human body temperature) in different media with pH = 2 as simulated human gastric fluid and pH = 7.4, which simulated a physiological environment. Determination of drug release quantity was performed with UV-VIS spectroscopy. The surface polarity, pH and naproxen form influenced the total released amount of drug. In general, naproxen sodium salt has a higher solubility than its acid form, thus significantly affecting drug release from surface-modified SBA-15 materials. Different pH conditions involved surface protonation and formation/disruption of intermolecular interactions, influencing both the release rate and the total released amount of naproxen. Different kinetic models, zero-order, first-order, Higuchi and Hixson–Crowell models, were used to fit the drug release data. This review contains the main research directions, which are directly aimed at converting materials based on rice husks particularly, for their role for medicine and biotechnology. Especially in developing countries, more than 95% of rice husks are produced. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the production of various materials from rice husks, the existing scientific information is still widely scattered in the literature. Therefore, this review article provides extensive information on the work of various researchers, including the Institute of Combustion Problems (Almaty, Kazakhstan), on the production of various materials from rice husks and their physico-chemical characteristics. Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) is a chronic and insidious disease that mainly affects small ruminants and caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (C. pseudotuberculosis). The aims of this research were to identify C. pseudotuberculosis by PCR from pyogenic lesions, to study the phylogenetic analysis of C. pseudotuberculosis and to detect the prevalence based on the detected superficial lesions of CLA in Dakahlia governorate, Egypt. Out of 3471 clinically examined animals, 129 (3.71%) animals were affected with CLA. The isolation rate of C. pseudotuberculosis in abscess of sheep was 45.74% (59/129). Out of 129 samples examined by PCR assay, 63 (48.83%) were positive phospholipase D (PLD) indicated at fragment size 203 bp. This is the first phylogenetic analysis study of C. pseudotuberculosis isolate in Egypt which was isolated from infected sheep. Nucleotide sequence identity data demonstrated that C. pseudotuberculosis PLD gene (MW187942) Dakahlia share homology 99.01%, 98.83 and 98.48% with Zagazig, Egypt (MN867024), Tamil nadu, India (MG720636) and Sudan (MG692441), respectively. Background: Microsporum canis (M.canis) is the most common dermatophyte causing tinea capitis and corporis in humans. Proteases encoded by subtilisin (SUB) virulence genes are from the keratinases leading to dermatophytosis. Subtilisin 1 and SUB3 were expressed during the adherence of arthroconidia to corneocytes by M. canis. Few M. canis molecular identification assays were used. There is a new target gene for identification of M.canis such as the velB gene. The aim of our study is to assess the presence of SUB (1-3) virulence genes in M.canis isolates and to assess the ability of the velB gene in identification of M.canis isolates compared with the traditional Mc gene. Methods: Thirty M.canis isolates were collected from 120 suspected cases of dermatophytosis attended the Dermatology outpatient clinic in Suez Canal University Hospitals. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of MC gene was done. Real time PCR was done for detection of the velB and SUB (1-3) genes. Results: The number of positive isolates detected of MC gene were 28(93.3%) isolates. Thirty isolates (100%) were positive for velB gene. Subtilisin 1 gene was detected in 21 isolates (70%), while SUB 2 gene was positive in 3 isolates only (10%) and SUB 3 gene showed the highest percentage as it was positive in 29 isolates (96.7%). Conclusion: We concluded that the new primer Mc-VelB showed high specific results in detection of M.canis isolates. Male development is greatly influenced by testosterone, which also helps to build bone and muscle, as well as the testis, penis, and prostate. Endocrinology relies heavily on hormone and related biomarkers measurements. Chromatographic techniques are commonly used to analyze hormones because they offer excellent separation and quantification capabilities. Due to their usability, portability, simplicity, and sensitivity, electrochemical biosensors have grown more and more in popularity over time for hormone detection. Electrochemical biosensors are divided into four groups: impedimetric, potentiometric, amperometric, and conductometric. Biosensors based on electrochemistry are ideal for early clinical analysis, but their commercialization is hindered by poor reproducibility. An overview of electrochemical biosensors that detect testosterone hormones is presented in our review. After an introduction to biosensors and electrochemical biosensors, testosterone hormone, the immobilization process and analytical performance of the electrochemical biosensors will be discussed. Proactive environmental strategies (PESs) are dynamic environmental capabilities that stimulate competitive advantage in the hospitality and tourism (H&T) industries. PESs legitimize environmental goals, policies, budgets, and reports, allowing for environmentally friendly actions and behaviors. In order to highlight measures, antecedents, and outcomes of PESs in the H&T industries, 287 articles were obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. Only 78 articles were identified as eligible for the final analysis, spanning a period of more than 26 years (1996 till 2022). The current review demonstrates that PESs in H&T have advanced over the last 26 years. There are many PESs in H&T, with no unified set of measurement tools of PESs. Additionally, there are many antecedents and outcomes of PESs in H&T. However, there has been a paucity of research on H&T PESs, necessitating a thorough investigation of several issues. This review discusses implications and recommendations for H&T and presents a strategy for extending future studies through theoretical advancement and empirical development. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder accompanied by excessive keratinocyte proliferation. Erianin (Eri) is an ideal drug candidate for inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis in the treatment of psoriasis. However, Eri's poor water solubility and low penetration activity across the skin hinder its application in local medicine. In this study, we developed a novel photo-responsive dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticle-based carrier to deliver erianin, improved its bioavailability, and achieved sustained-release effects. Spiropyran (SP), 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTES) were conjugated to the outer surface, which allowed Eri to be released in response to UV radiation. The physicochemical properties of photo-responsive dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Eri-DMSN@FSP) were characterized via multiple techniques, such as using a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer, a high-resolution transmission electron microscope, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The anti-proliferative properties and light-triggered release of erianin-loaded photo-responsive dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles were assessed via the MTT assay and a drug release study in vitro. Erianin-loaded photo-responsive dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (UV) exhibit a significantly enhanced HaCat cell-inhibiting efficacy compared to other formulations, as demonstrated by their extremely low cell viability of 10.0% (concentration: 500 mg/mL), indicating their capability to release a drug that responds to UV radiation. The cellular uptake of photo-responsive dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSN@FSP) was observed via confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). These experimental results show that Eri-DMSN@FSP could be effectively endocytosed into cells and respond to ultraviolet light to release Eri, achieving a more effective psoriasis treatment. The African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) is commonly considered as a pet animal, which makes it widely studied. This study focused on lingual morphology due to its relation to the type of food consumed. Light and scanning electron microscopy on the tongues of 3 adult male hedgehogs was performed. Five types of papillae were distinguished on the dorsal lingual surface: filiform (fork‐like), conical, fungiform, vallate and foliate. Small conical papillae covered the dorsal surface of the apex, filiform (fork‐like) papillae were found on the corpus, fungiform papillae were scattered among conical as well as fork‐like papillae. Three vallate papillae localized on the lingual radix were arranged in an inverted V shape. Taste buds were opened to the circumpapillary sulcus. Histochemical analysis of seromucous salivary glands in the radix and purely serous glands in the vicinity of the vallate papillae showed the composition of their secretions in more detail. A comparison of the ultrastructure of the tongue within the family Erinaceidae was performed, as well as to species with similar feeding habits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
