Mucins play a variety of roles; for example, in vertebrates, mucins lubricate epithelial surfaces and protect tissue from physical and biological damage, however, knowledge of insect mucins is limited. Here, we identified an eggshell-related mucin-like protein, NlESMuc, in the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens. NlESMuc was specifically expressed in the follicular cells from the egg chambers of the ovarioles. RNA interference (RNAi) was used to perform functional analysis of NlESMuc. Adult female BPH with NlESMuc knockdown had significantly reduced fecundity, including more difficult oviposition, lower egg production, and eggs that could not hatch. Scanning electron microscopy showed that, in NlESMuc knocked-down BPH, the ultrastructure of the eggshells of fully developed oocytes was loose, and the cross-section showed many small droplets of about 0.1-μm diameter. Based on the results, it is concluded that NlESMuc is an eggshell-related protein and essential for normal oviposition. Our findings help to provide new targets for pesticide design and RNAi-based BPH control and will also provide new insights into insect eggshells and insect mucins.

ObjectiveTo determine the frequency distribution of bleeding sites in idiopathic hidden arterial epistaxis.MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, 107 patients with hidden arterial epistaxis were endoscopically examined for sites of bleeding.ResultsAll sites of hidden arterial epistaxis were identified by endoscopic examination. Bleeding sites were identified at initial surgery in 103 patients and during the second surgery in 4. The bleeding sites included: the olfactory cleft region in 47 patients, the inferior meatus region in 29, the middle meatus region in 11, multiple bleeding sites (olfactory cleft and anterior septum) in 3, the anterior roof of the nasal cavity in 4, the nasal floor in 11 and the nasopharynx in 2. The bleeding points showed a white or red volcano-like bump in 75 patients, isolated prominent telangiectasia in 21 and mucosal ulceration in 11.ConclusionCommon sites of hidden arterial epistaxis include the olfactory cleft, inferior meatus and middle meatus. However, there should be awareness of some uncommon bleeding sites (including the anterior roof of the nasal cavity, the nasal floor and the nasopharynx) and of multiple bleeding sites.

Microwave ablation (MWA) is a relatively new technique which has been used to achieve hemostasis at surgical field. However, few publications have reported MWA for epistaxis.Our objectives were to identify the bleeding sites/points in instances of posterior epistaxis and to evaluate the efficacy of MWA for controlling bleeding.Patients with posterior epistaxis who met the inclusion criteria were examined and treated endoscopically using MWA. Recurrent bleeding and complications were evaluated at 1 and 3 months after treatment.Of the 71 patients, the bleeding site/point was identified in 67 patients while 4 patients was unknown. Of the 67 patients with known bleeding sites, the olfactory cleft was in 44 patients, the middle meatus in 5 patients, and the inferior meatus in 18 patients. Only the bleeding point was coagulated in the 67 patients while prophylactic MWA in the 4 patients. No side effects or complications (including recurrent bleeding, crusting, nasal discomfort, and nasal septal perforation) were seen at 3-month follow-up.MWA may effectively control posterior epistaxis with a low cost and without complications.

Objective To compare the outcomes of adolescent patients with recurrent anterior epistaxis (RAE) treated with either silver nitrate cauterization or microwave ablation (MWA). Study design and methods: In this prospective, randomized study, one hundred 13–18-year-old adolescents with RAE were assigned to two groups: the MWA group (n = 50) or the silver nitrate cauterization group (n = 50). Both groups were followed up for 12 months. The primary and secondary outcomes were evaluated. Result Ablation hemostasis was successfully achieved within 10–20 s in all patients in the MWA group. Eighteen (36.0%) patients in the silver nitrate group had recurrent epistaxis compared to three (6.0%) in the MWA group (P = 0.01) within 2–8 weeks after treatment. Two (2/48, 4.2%) patients in the MWA group had recurrent epistaxis compared to seventeen (17/43, 39.5%) in the silver nitrate group at 6 months; this difference was statistically significant (P = 0.01). However, 8 (8/37, 21.6%) patients in the MWA group had recurrent epistaxis compared to 15 (15/41,36.6%) in the silver nitrate group at 12 months; this difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.12). No treatment-related complications, including necrosis or septal perforation were seen in either group during follow up. Conclusions MWA may be a useful treatment for adolescents with RAE, as it had a lower incidence of recurrent epistaxis within 6 months of treatment compared to silver nitrate cauterization.

Introduction: In the last decade, there has been an increasing use of biomaterial patches in the regeneration of traumatic tympanic membrane perforations. The major advantages of biomaterial patches are to provisionally restore the physiological function of the middle ear, thereby immediately improving ear symptoms, and act as a scaffold for epithelium migration. However, whether there are additional biological effects on eardrum regeneration is unclear for biological material patching in the clinic. Objective: This study evaluated the healing response for different repair patterns in human traumatic tympanic membrane perforations by endoscopic observation. Methods: In total, 114 patients with traumatic tympanic membrane perforations were allocated sequentially to two groups: the spontaneous healing group (n = 57) and Gelfoam patch-treated group (n = 57). The closure rate, closure time, and rate of otorrhea were compared between the groups at 3 months. Results: Ultimately, 107 patients were analyzed in the two groups (52 patients in the spontaneous healing group vs. 55 patients in the Gelfoam patch-treated group). The overall closure rate at the end of the 3 month follow-up period was 90.4% in the spontaneous healing group and 94.5% in the Gelfoam patch-treated group; the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). However, the total average closure time was significantly different between the two groups (26.8 ± 9.1 days in the spontaneous healing group vs. 14.7 ± 9.1 days in the Gelfoam patch-treated group, p 0,05). Expression of nuptial color is usually energetically costly, and is therefore regarded as an ‘honest signal’ to reflect mate quality. In order to choose a mate with high quality, both sexes may benefit from the ability to precisely evaluate their mates through optimizing visual systems which is in turn partially regulated by opsin gene modification. However, how terrestrial vertebrates regulate their color vision sensitivity is poorly studied. The green-spotted grass lizard Takydromus viridipunctatus is a sexually dimorphic lizard in which males exhibit prominent green lateral colors in the breeding season. In order to clarify relationships among male coloration, female preference, and chromatic visual sensitivity, we conducted testosterone manipulation with mate choice experiments, and evaluated the change of opsin gene expression from different testosterone treatments and different seasons. The results indicated that males with testosterone supplementation showed a significant increase in nuptial color coverage, and were preferred by females in mate choice experiments. By using quantitative PCR (qPCR), we also found that higher levels of testosterone may lead to an increase in rhodopsin-like 2 (rh2) and a decrease in long-wavelength sensitive (lws) gene expression in males, a pattern which was also observed in wild males undergoing maturation as they approached the breeding season. In contrast, females showed the opposite pattern, with increased lws and decreased rh2 expression in the breeding season. We suggest this alteration may facilitate the ability of male lizards to more effectively evaluate color cues, and also may provide females with the ability to more effectively evaluate the brightness of potential mates. Our findings suggest that both sexes of this chromatically dimorphic lizard regulate their opsin expression seasonally, which might play an important role in the evolution of nuptial coloration.

OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), 0.3% ofloxacin eardrops (OFLX), and Gelfoam patching on the healing of human moderate and large traumatic tympanic membrane perforations (TMPs). STUDY DESIGN A prospective, quasi-randomized, controlled clinical study. SETTING A University-affiliated teaching hospital. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We performed a quasi-randomized prospective analysis between January 2010 and December 2014. All patients had traumatic TMPs covering areas >25% of the entire tympanic membrane. The closure rates, closure times, hearing gains, and rates of otorrhea in patients who underwent conservative observation, Gelfoam patching, topical bFGF application, and direct application of OFLX were compared. RESULTS We ultimately included 185 patients. Closure rates did not significantly differ among the four groups (p = 0.257). Post-hoc multiple comparisons also showed that the closure rates did not differ between any two groups (p > 0.083). The mean closure times were 25.6 ± 13.32, 12.3 ± 8.15, 14.3 ± 5.44, and 13.97 ± 8.82 days for the observation, bFGF, Gelfoam patch, and OFLX groups, respectively. The closure times of the four groups differed significantly (p 0.0083). CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggest that OFLX, bFGF, and Gelfoam patching accelerated the closure of human moderate and large traumatic TMPs. Hence, treatment of human traumatic TMPs should be revisited clinically. Topical application of OFLX may be recommended, because OFLX is more easily available and convenient than bFGF or Gelfoam patch for otology outpatients.

In situ grown zerovalent nanoiron/magnetite on sponge-like carbon matrix (nZVI/Fe3O4@C) has been evaluated for the removal of toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from polluted water. This material is synthesized by calcination of the epoxide group-functionalized polystyrene (FPS) as the carbon source under a mixture of 5% hydrogen/argon (v/v) atmosphere. The nZVI/Fe3O4@C demonstrates a unique capability to remove Cr(VI) from polluted water over a wide pH range, and the optimal pH value for Cr(VI) removal is 5.0 at 298 K. In comparison, only Fe3O4@C is formed when the as-received PS is used as the carbon source under the same atmosphere conditions and exhibits a poor Cr(VI) removal performance (the removal percentage is around 50% relative to nZVI/Fe3O4@C). Various factors influencing the Cr(VI) removal efficiency, such as treatment time, initial Cr(VI) concentration and nZVI/Fe3O4@C dosage, have been systematically studied. The Cr(VI) removal mechanism is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman tests. The results illustrate that the Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) by nZVI with the simultaneous adsorption of Cr(III) via C–O–Fe bonds on nZVI/Fe3O4@C. The Cr(VI) removal kinetics is determined to follow pseudo-first-order behavior with calculated pseudo-first-order rate constants of 0.01582, 0.02555 and 0.03264 min−1 at 298, 308 and 318 K, respectively, at a pH of 5.0. The low value of the activation energy (28.621 kJ mol−1) indicates that the Cr(VI) reduction process on nZVI/Fe3O4@C is a fast process. The calculated thermodynamic parameters of this chemical reaction, including negative ΔG0, positive ΔH0 and positive ΔS0, suggest that the Cr(VI) reduction on nZVI/Fe3O4@C is spontaneous and endothermic, and more preferred at higher temperatures. Both the kinetics and thermodynamics show that the nZVI/Fe3O4@C is a promising material for highly fast and efficient removal of Cr(VI) from polluted water.

Easily reproducible magnetic carbon nanoadsorbents (MPSNs) derived from polystyrene (PS) by direct calcination of functionalized PS with an iron salt are employed for effective tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) adsorption. Batch adsorption tests indicate that MPSNs exhibited high adsorption affinity to aqueous TBBPA with a maximum adsorption capacity of 117.00 mg g−1. The TBBPA adsorption kinetics of MPSNs are found to obey the pseudo-second-order behavior with a calculated room temperature initial adsorption rate of 42.871 mg g−1 min−1 for the solution with an initial TBBPA concentration of 4.0 mg L−1 and pH value of 8.0. Monolayer adsorption of the Langmuir isotherm model is well fitted rather than the multilayer adsorption of the Freundlich isotherm model. The calculated thermodynamic parameters suggest that the TBBPA adsorption on MPSNs is spontaneous and exothermic. The optimal pH value for TBBPA adsorption on MPSNs is around 8.0 with an MPSNs dose of 30.0 mg L−1 and contact time of 30 min under sonication at 298 K. The TBBPA adsorption performance of MPSNs is strongly influenced by the presence of humic acid. The prepared MPSN retains around 85.5% of TBBPA adsorption capacity after 5 cycles and exhibits good reusability. The explored adsorption mechanism by Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy suggests that the C–O–Fe bond in the MPSN is responsible for the superior TBBPA adsorption performance. This work provides promising magnetic adsorbents for TBBPA wastewater treatment as well as a new strategy to recycle and reuse polymer plastic waste.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was chosen to serve as an oxidant to functionalize the surface of graphite. The effect of pH and concentration of Cr(VI) solution on the functionalization of graphite was systematically investigated by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the ether (C–O–C) functional groups were observed on the surface of graphite after being treated with pH = 1.0 solution with a Cr(VI) concentration of 1000 μg L−1 for 30 min. However, no obvious functional groups were observed on the graphite surface for the pH higher than 2.0 and the Cr(VI) concentrations higher than 2.0 mg L−1. The electrical conductivity of functionalized graphite by Cr(VI) was observed to be good, i.e., the same order of magnitude as that of the as-received graphite without a serious decrease. This work provides a new strategy to functionalize graphite for preparing multifunctional graphite nanocomposites.

We investigated the medical costs and effects of ofloxacin drops (OFLX), gelatin sponge patches, spontaneous healing, and endoscopic myringoplasty on healing in large tympanic membrane perforations (TMPs).In total, 100 patients with large traumatic TMPs involving50% of the eardrum were randomly assigned to OFLX, gelatin sponge, spontaneous healing, or endoscopic myringoplasty treatment groups. Medical costs, closure times, and closure rates were compared among groups at 6 months.The closure rates in the OFLX, gelatin sponge, spontaneous healing, and endoscopic myringoplasty groups were 95.7%, 82.6%, 58.3%, and 91.7%, respectively (P = 0.05). The mean closure time was 13.73 ± 6.14 days in the OFLX group, 15.89 ± 4.95 days in the gelatin sponge group, 48.36 ± 10.37 days in the spontaneous healing group, and 12 days in the endoscopic myringoplasty group (P 0.001). The mean medical costs in US dollars were $15.53 ± 3.15, $103.64 ± 111.58, $11.17 ± 1.33, and $715.90 in the OFLX, gelatin sponge, spontaneous healing, and endoscopic myringoplasty groups, respectively (P 0.001).Although the gelatin sponge and myringoplasty treatments significantly shortened the closure time compared with spontaneous healing, the gelatin sponge patch did not significantly improve the closure rate, and the medical cost of myringoplasty was significantly higher than that of the other treatments. In contrast, OFLX significantly shortened closure time and had a higher closure rate than spontaneous healing, and the medical costs were lower than those of the gelatin sponge and myringoplasty procedures.

Significance The cuticle, mainly composed of chitin and cuticular proteins (CPs), is a multifunctional structure of arthropods. CPs usually account for >1% of the total insect proteins encoded in the genome. Why does an insect need so many different CPs? In this study, we use comprehensive large-scale technologies to study the full complement of CPs and their functions in the brown planthopper (BPH). A total of 32 of the 140 BPH CP genes are found to be essential for nymph/adult development, egg production, or embryo development; in addition, redundant and complementary functions of CPs are revealed., Cuticle, mainly composed of chitin and cuticular proteins (CPs), is a multifunctional structure of arthropods. CPs usually account for >1% of the total insect proteins. Why does an insect encode so many different CP genes in the genome? In this study, we use comprehensive large-scale technologies to study the full complement of CPs (i.e., the CP-ome) of the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, a major rice plant pest. Eight CP families (CPR, CPF, TWDL, CPLCP, CPG, CPAP1, CPAP3, and CPAPn) including 140 proteins in BPH, in which CPAPn is a CP family that we discovered. The CPG family that was considered to be restricted to the Lepidoptera has also been identified in BPH. As reported here, CPLCP family members are characterized by three conserved sequence motifs. In addition, we identified a testis protein family with a peritrophin A domain that we named TPAP. We authenticated the real existence of 106 proteins among the 140 CPs. RNA interference (RNAi) experiments were conducted against 135 CP genes in early- and late-instar nymphs and newly emerged female adults, demonstrating that 32 CPs were essential for BPH normal development or egg production. Combined RNAi experiments suggested redundant and complementary functions of the large number of CPs. Transcriptomic data revealed that the CP genes were expressed in a tissue-specific manner, and there were four clusters of developmental expression patterns. This study gives a comprehensive understanding of the roles of CPs in an insect cuticle.

In this work, a nanocarbon bridged nanomagnetite network (NC-NMN) is developed through the electrospinning of epichlorohydrin functionalized polystyrene (f-PS), followed by the direct calcination of f-PS and ferric nitrate, which is capable of superfast removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from polluted water within only 15 s benefiting from its gridding framework, with an adsorption rate constant of 1.64 g mg−1 min−1 according to the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The well-fitted Langmuir isotherm model indicates a monolayer adsorption for Cr(VI) on NC-NMN. The thermodynamic parameters including negative ΔG° and positive ΔH° demonstrate that the Cr(VI) adsorption on NC-NMN is spontaneous and endothermic. The Cr(VI) adsorption retention, which is only 3.8%, is achieved for NC-NMN after five cycles, exhibiting a prominent stability and an excellent recyclability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential and energy-filter transmission electron spectroscopy (EFTEM) results illustrate that both the electrostatic attraction and the network structure of NC-NMN are responsible for the superior Cr(VI) adsorption performance. This work intends to provide a new method for designing the novel structure materials for polluted water treatment.

Bicaudal-C (Bic-C) was originally identified in a Drosophila melanogaster mutagenesis screen and plays vital roles in embryogenesis. In this study, we characterized the Bic-C gene in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), an insect pest that undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Our result showed that N. lugens Bic-C (NlBic-C) is a female-specific gene in this species. It is specifically expressed in developing oocytes and is not expressed in laid eggs. Ribonucleic acid interference (RNAi) of NlBic-C arrested the uptake of vitelline by oocytes, and resulted in undeveloped ovaries and the complete inhibition of oocyte growth in the ovarioles, suggesting that NlBic-C is required for oogenesis and oocyte maturation. NlBic-C is extremely highly sensitive to RNAi, suggesting that it may be a potential target in RNAi-based insect pest management.

Discriminative correlation filters (DCF) have aroused great interests in visual object tracking in recent years due to the accuracy and computation efficiency. However, occlusion is still the main factor that affects performance. In this paper, a spatial-temporal consistent correlation filter utilizes the rich features extracted from a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to tackle this problem. We reformulate the conventional loss function and update classifier coefficients adaptively according to object appearance change rather than a constant learning rate. To acquire more accurate target location, this work combines correlation filter respond maps from different CNN layers together lie on their reliability. The experimental results evaluated on extensive challenging benchmark sequences demonstrate the proposed algorithm significantly improves the performance compared to state-of-the-art trackers.

Robust visual tracking is a significant but challenging task in computer vision. Deep convolutional neural networks have been proverbially applied to visual tracking in recent years by learning a genetic representation from numerous training images. However, the deep networks training is time-consuming. In this work, an efficient and robust tracking algorithm using a small single Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is proposed. Different from the existing CNN models, a novel loss function to process image batches in a single branch CNN is introduced. In addition, appropriate model update in a “when required” style is used when tracking to achieve performance boost. Quantitative experimental results on various video sequences demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method in comparison with other state-of-the-art trackers.

Most animals are oviparous. However, the genes regulating egg shell formation remain not very clear. In this study, we found that Nilaparvata lugens Forkhead box transcription factor L2 ( Nl FoxL2) directly activated follicle cell protein 3C ( NlFcp3C ) to regulate chorion formation. NlFoxL2 and NlFcp3C had a similar expression pattern, both highly expressed in the follicular cells of female adults. Knockdown of NlFoxL2 or NlFcp3C also resulted in the same phenotypes: obesity and female infertility. RNA interference (RNAi) results suggested that NlFcp3C is a downstream gene of NlFoxL2 . Furthermore, transient expression showed that Nl FoxL2 could directly activate the NlFcp3C promoter. These results suggest that NlFcp3C is a direct target gene of Nl FoxL2. Depletion of NlFoxL2 or NlFcp3C prevented normal chorion formation. Our results first revealed the functions of Fcp3C and FoxL2 in regulation of oocyte maturation in an oviparous animal.

We evaluated the effects of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) delivered via a Gelfoam patch on the regeneration of myringosclerotic traumatic tympanic membrane perforations (TMPs) lying close to the malleus.A prospective, randomized, controlled clinical study.A university-affiliated teaching hospital.We prospectively analyzed, in a randomized manner, the outcomes of treatment for traumatic TMPs constituting25% of the tympanic membrane. The closure rates, closure times, and otorrhea rates were compared among patients treated via FGF-2-containing Gelfoam patches, Gelfoam patches alone, and observation only.We analyzed data from 138 patients. The perforation closure rates in the FGF-2 plus Gelfoam patch, Gelfoam patch, and observation alone groups were 97.9, 89.8, and 70.7%, respectively. Both the FGF-2 plus Gelfoam and Gelfoam alone groups exhibited significantly higher closure rates than the observational group (both p0.05).The mean closure times were 15.7±5.1, 24.8±4.9, and 35.7±9.2days in the FGF-2 plus Gelfoam patch, Gelfoam patch alone, and observation alone groups, respectively. The FGF-2 plus Gelfoam patch group exhibited a significantly shorter closure time than the Gelfoam patch alone and observation alone groups (p0.05). The incidences of purulent otorrhea were 14.6, 6.1, and 4.9% in the FGF-2 plus Gelfoam patch, Gelfoam patch alone, and observation alone groups, respectively. Surprisingly, 7 of 7 (100.0%) perforations associated with purulent otorrhea completely closed in the FGF-2 plus Gelfoam patch group; however, no such perforation healed in either the Gelfoam alone or observation alone group.FGF-2 plus Gelfoam patching significantly shortened the closure time compared to observation and Gelfoam patching alone, and it significantly improved the closure rate (compared to observation alone) of myringosclerotic perforations lying close the malleus. FGF-2 plus Gelfoam patching is a valuable, minimally invasive alternative treatment that may be readily applied to outpatient settings.

The brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens harbors intracellular fungal yeast-like symbionts and endosymbiotic bacteria, with the latter mainly comprising Wolbachia and Arsenophonus. In this study, Wolbachia or Arsenophonus were detected in all 15 brown planthopper populations collected from China and Southeastern Asian countries. Furthermore, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis of the individuals in a population that was infected by both Wolbachia and Arsenophonus showed that each individual was infected by only one of the two symbiotic bacteria. Real-time quantitative PCR showed that both endosymbionts are mainly localized in the mycetocytes of the fat body. Reciprocal crosses between the Wolbachia + and Arsenophonus + brown planthopper populations showed that both bacteria were maternally transmitted. Our results showed that the brown planthopper populations are extensively infected by Wolbachia or Arsenophonus, and the two bacteria may be exclusive in each host individual. This finding might be helpful for further studies on the biological functions of the endosymbiotic bacteria and will deepen our understanding of the complicated symbiosis system in this host.

A baculovirus, named BomaNPV S2, was isolated from a diseased larva of the wild silkworm, Bombyx mandarina. Notably, BomaNPV S2 exhibited a distinguishing feature in that its host range covered that of both Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) and Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) in cultured cells. It could replicate in cells of B. mori (Bm5 and BmN), Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) and Trichoplusia ni (Tn-5B1-4). However, occlusion-derived virions of BomaNPV S2 in B. mori cells contained only a single nucleocapsid, whereas they contained multiple nucleocapsids in Tn-5B1-4 cells. The complete genome sequence of BomaNPV S2, including predicted ORFs, was determined and compared with the genome sequence of its close relatives. The comparison results showed that most of the BomaNPV S2 genome sequence was shared with BmNPV (BmNPV T3) or BomaNPV S1, but several regions seemed more similar to regions of AcMNPV. This observation might explain why BomaNPV S2 covers the host ranges of BmNPV and AcMNPV. Further recombinant virus infection experiments demonstrated that GP64 plays an important role in BomaNPV S2 host-range determination.

A functionalized magnetic nickel ferrite/manganese dioxide (NiFe2O4/MnO2) with 3D hierarchical flower-like and core-shell structure was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal approach and applied for the removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to study the effect of solution pH, initial Pb(II) concentration, and dose of absorbents on the Pb(II) removal by NiFe2O4/MnO2. The NiFe2O4/MnO2 nanocomposites showed the fast Pb(II) adsorption performance with the maximum adsorption capacity of 85.78mgg-1. The adsorption kinetics of Pb(II) onto NiFe2O4/MnO2 obeyed a pseudo-second-order model. The isothermal experimental results indicated that the Langmuir model was fitted better than the Freundlich model, illustrating a monolayer adsorption process for Pb(II) onto NiFe2O4/MnO2. Meanwhile, the NiFe2O4/MnO2 was easily separated from the solution by an external magnet within a short period of time and still exhibited almost 80% removal capacity after six regenerations. The NiFe2O4/MnO2 is expected to be a new promising adsorbent for heavy metal removal.

The purposes of this study were to determine the factors involved in the spontaneous healing and to profile the various etiologies of traumatic tympanic membrane (TM) perforation.A retrospective review was performed on 729 cases of traumatic TM perforation diagnosed in the emergency department and outpatient clinic from January 2007 to March 2011.A total 641 patients with traumatic TM perforations were enrolled in the study. The group consisted of 320 male and 321 female patients with a mean age of 33.6 years (3-79 years). The types of trauma included compression injury (554 patients), blast injury (55 patients), and instrumental injury (32 patients). The causes of conflict by a slap or a fist were spouse or lover (52%), parents and sibling (3%), school teachers (4%), schoolmate (12%), state police and prisoner (7%), and blow against the ear during street fight (22%). Of the 641, 137 were lost during follow-up; of the remaining 504, perforations closed spontaneously in 451 (89%), within a mean of 27.4 days. Wet perforations with bloody or watery discharge significantly improved the healing rate (P.01) and shortened the average perforation closure time (P.01), as compared with dry perforations. Although the perforation that involved malleus or umbo damage did not significantly affect the healing rate (P.05), a significantly prolonged closure time (41.6 vs 23.8 days) was observed as compared with no damage. However, the curled edges did not also affect the outcome of spontaneous healing; the healing rate was 91% and 88% (P.05), and the average closure time was 28.1 and 26.7 days (P.05), respectively, for with and without curler edges. By perforation size, the overall healing rate was 92% and 54% (P.01), and the average closure time was 22.8 and 47.3 days (P.01), respectively, for small and larger perforations. Moreover, 7 patients had neomembrane formation on follow-up, 2 developed cholesteatoma, 1 developed tympanosclerosis, and 1 developed facial paralysis.In our experience, domestic violence and street fight were the most common causes of the traumatic TM perforation. Traumatic TM perforations have excellent prognosis. However, preexisting tympanosclerosis and the perforation that involved malleus or umbo damage could lengthen the healing time of perforation, Wet perforations with bloody or watery discharge accelerate the healing, but the curled edges did not affect the outcome of spontaneous healing.

The Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) is a baculovirus that selectively infects domestic silkworm. BmNPV ORF71 (Bm71) is not a core set gene in baculovirus and shares 92 % amino acid sequence identity with Autographa californica multinucleocapsid NPV ORF88 (Ac88/cg30). Previously, it has been reported that virus lacking Ac88 had no striking phenotypes in cell lines or host larvae. However, the exact role of Bm71 during BmNPV life cycle remains unknown. In the present study, we constructed a Bm71-disrupted (Bm71-D) virus and assessed the effect of the Bm71 disruption on viral replication and viral phenotype throughout the viral life cycle. Results showed that the Bm71-D bacmid could successfully transfect Bm5 cell lines and produce infectious budded virus (BV). But the BV titer was 10- to 100-fold lower than that of the wild-type (WT) virus during infection, and the decreased BV titer was rescued by Bm71 gene repair virus (Bm71-R). A larval bioassay showed that Bm71-D virus took 7.5 h longer than the WT to kill Bombyx mori larvae. Transmission electron microscopy analysis indicated that the Bm71-D virus-infected cells had typical virogenic stroma, bundles of nucleocapsids and polyhedra. Taken together, these results suggest that Bm71 has important implications for determining BV yield and virulence in viral life cycle even though it is not an essential gene for replication of BmNPV.

Background: Rosemary (Rosmarinus offcinsalis L) has a liver protection function under various conditions of liver damage. Rosmarinic acid, one of the pharmacological constituents of rosemary, exhibited protective effects against organ injury, including acute liver injury. Hypothesis: We hypothesize that RA stimulates liver regeneration. Study Design: In the present study, we investigated the effects and mechanism of RA administration on liver regeneration using partial hepatectomy (PH), a well-validated liver regeneration model in mice. Methods: We use a 2/3 partial hepatectomy (PH) model to induce liver regeneration. RA was administered prior to and simultaneously with PH. The regeneration process was estimated by the index of the liver to body weight (ILBW) and the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and liver transaminases. Results: The administration of rosmarinic acid stimulated hepatocyte proliferation based on activation of the mTOR/S6K pathway. Rosmarinic acid treatment also rescued impaired liver function due to PH. Conclusion: These data demonstrate that RA is potentially useful to promote liver regeneration.
