Superconducting qubits provide a promising path toward building large-scale quantum computers. The simple and robust transmon qubit has been the leading platform, achieving multiple milestones. However, fault-tolerant quantum computing calls for qubit operations at error rates significantly lower than those exhibited in the state of the art. Consequently, alternative superconducting qubits with better error protection have attracted increasing interest. Among them, fluxonium is a particularly promising candidate, featuring large anharmonicity and long coherence times. Here, we engineer a fluxonium-based quantum processor that integrates high qubit-coherence, fast frequency-tunability, and individual-qubit addressability for reset, readout, and gates. With simple and fast gate schemes, we achieve an average single-qubit gate fidelity of 99.97% and a two-qubit gate fidelity of up to 99.72%. This performance is comparable to the highest values reported in the literature of superconducting circuits. Thus our work, for the first time within the realm of superconducting qubits, reveals an approach toward fault-tolerant quantum computing that is alternative and competitive to the transmon system.

Electronic systems for qubit control and measurement serve as a bridge between quantum programming language and quantum information processors. With the rapid development of superconducting quantum circuit (SQC) technology, synchronization in a large-scale system, low-latency execution, and low noise are required for electronic systems. Here, we present a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based electronic system with a distributed synchronous clock and trigger architecture. The system supports synchronous control of qubits with jitters of approximately 5 ps. We implement a real-time digital signal processing system in the FPGA, enabling precise timing control, arbitrary waveform generation, IQ demodulation for qubit state discrimination, and the generation of real-time qubit-state-dependent trigger signals for feedback/feedforward control. The hardware and firmware low-latency design reduces the feedback/feedforward latency of the electronic system to 125 ns, significantly less than the decoherence times of the qubit. Finally, we demonstrate the functionalities and low-noise performance of this system using a fluxonium quantum processor.

Deep generative models can synthesize photorealistic images of human faces with novel identities. However, a key challenge to the wide applicability of such techniques is to provide independent control over semantically meaningful parameters: appearance, head pose, face shape, and facial expressions. In this paper, we propose VariTex - to the best of our knowledge the first method that learns a variational latent feature space of neural face textures, which allows sampling of novel identities. We combine this generative model with a parametric face model and gain explicit control over head pose and facial expressions. To generate complete images of human heads, we propose an additive decoder that adds plausible details such as hair. A novel training scheme enforces a pose-independent latent space and in consequence, allows learning a one-to-many mapping between latent codes and pose-conditioned exterior regions. The resulting method can generate geometrically consistent images of novel identities under fine-grained control over head pose, face shape, and facial expressions. This facilitates a broad range of downstream tasks, like sampling novel identities, changing the head pose, expression transfer, and more. As a powerful technique in medical imaging, image synthesis is widely used in applications such as denoising, super resolution and modality transformation etc. Recently, the revival of deep neural networks made immense progress in the field of medical imaging. Although many deep leaning based models have been proposed to improve the image synthesis accuracy, the evaluation of the model uncertainty, which is highly important for medical applications, has been a missing part. In this work, we propose to use Bayesian conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) with concrete dropout to improve image synthesis accuracy. Meanwhile, an uncertainty calibration approach is involved in the whole pipeline to make the uncertainty generated by Bayesian network interpretable. The method is validated with the T1w to T2w MR image translation with a brain tumor dataset of 102 subjects. Compared with the conventional Bayesian neural network with Monte Carlo dropout, results of the proposed method reach a significant lower RMSE with a p-value of 0.0186. Brain extraction or skull stripping of magnetic resonance images (MRI) is an essential step in neuroimaging studies, the accuracy of which can severely affect subsequent image processing procedures. Current automatic brain extraction methods demonstrate good results on human brains, but are often far from satisfactory on nonhuman primates, which are a necessary part of neuroscience research. To overcome the challenges of brain extraction in nonhuman primates, we propose a fully-automated brain extraction pipeline combining deep Bayesian convolutional neural network (CNN) and fully connected three-dimensional (3D) conditional random field (CRF). The deep Bayesian CNN, Bayesian SegNet, is used as the core segmentation engine. As a probabilistic network, it is not only able to perform accurate high-resolution pixel-wise brain segmentation, but also capable of measuring the model uncertainty by Monte Carlo sampling with dropout in the testing stage. Then, fully connected 3D CRF is used to refine the probability result from Bayesian SegNet in the whole 3D context of the brain volume. The proposed method was evaluated with a manually brain-extracted dataset comprising T1w images of 100 nonhuman primates. Our method outperforms six popular publicly available brain extraction packages and three well-established deep learning based methods with a mean Dice coefficient of 0.985 and a mean average symmetric surface distance of 0.220 mm. A better performance against all the compared methods was verified by statistical tests (all p-values<10-4, two-sided, Bonferroni corrected). Brain gender differences have been known for a long time and are the possible reason for many psychological, psychiatric and behavioral differences between males and females. Predicting genders from brain functional connectivity (FC) can build the relationship between brain activities and gender, and extracting important gender related FC features from the prediction model offers a way to investigate the brain gender difference. Current predictive models applied to gender prediction demonstrate good accuracies, but usually extract individual functional connections instead of connectivity patterns in the whole connectivity matrix as features. In addition, current models often omit the effect of the input brain FC scale on prediction and cannot give any model uncertainty information. Hence, in this study we propose to predict gender from multiple scales of brain FC with deep learning, which can extract full FC patterns as features. We further develop the understanding of the feature extraction mechanism in deep neural network (DNN) and propose a DNN feature ranking method to extract the highly important features based on their contributions to the prediction. Moreover, we apply Bayesian deep learning to the brain FC gender prediction, which as a probabilistic model can not only make accurate predictions but also generate model uncertainty for each prediction. Experiments were done on the high-quality Human Connectome Project S1200 release dataset comprising the resting state functional MRI data of 1003 healthy adults. First, DNN reaches 83.0%, 87.6%, 92.0%, 93.5% and 94.1% accuracies respectively with the FC input derived from 25, 50, 100, 200, 300 independent component analysis (ICA) components. We report, in a sequence of notes, our work on the Alibaba Cloud Quantum Development Platform (AC-QDP). AC-QDP provides a set of tools for aiding the development of both quantum computing algorithms and quantum processors, and is powered by a large-scale classical simulator deployed on Alibaba Cloud. In this note, we simulate a distance-3 logical qubit encoded in the 17-qubit surface code using experimental noise parameters for transmon qubits in a planar circuit QED architecture. Our simulation features crosstalk induced by ZZ-interactions. We show that at the current-stage noise levels, crosstalk contributes significantly to the dephasing of the logical qubit. This results in a total phase-flip probability of $\sim 0.6\%$, about $60\%$ higher than expected without considering crosstalk. This indicates that for the code considered, the current noise parameters approach, but do not yet meet, the break-even fault-tolerance regime., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

Recent advances in deep learning have improved the segmentation accuracy of subcortical brain structures, which would be useful in neuroimaging studies of many neurological disorders. However, most of the previous deep learning work does not investigate the specific difficulties that exist in segmenting extremely small but important brain regions such as the amygdala and its subregions. To tackle this challenging task, a novel 3D Bayesian fully convolutional neural network was developed to apply a dilated dualpathway approach that retains fine details and utilizes both local and more global contextual information to automatically segment the amygdala and its subregions at high precision. The proposed method provides insights on network design and sampling strategy that target segmentations of small 3D structures. In particular, this study confirms that a large context, enabled by a large field of view, is beneficial for segmenting small objects; furthermore, precise contextual information enabled by dilated convolutions allows for better boundary localization, which is critical for examining the morphology of the structure. In addition, it is demonstrated that the uncertainty information estimated from our network may be leveraged to identify atypicality in data. Our method was compared with two state-of-the-art deep learning models and a traditional multi-atlas approach, and exhibited excellent performance as measured both by Dice overlap as well as average symmetric surface distance. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first deep learning-based approach that targets the subregions of the amygdala.

Parasitic crosstalk in superconducting quantum devices is a leading limitation for quantum gates. We demonstrate the suppression of static ZZ crosstalk in a two-qubit, two-coupler superconducting circuit, where the frequency of a tunable coupler can be adjusted such that the ZZ interaction from each coupler destructively interfere. We verify the crosstalk elimination with simultaneous randomized benchmarking, and use a parametrically activated iSWAP interaction to achieve a Bell state preparation fidelity of 98.5% and a $\sqrt{\textrm{iSWAP}}$ gate fidelity of 94.8% obtained via quantum process tomography.

We demonstrate the suppression of photon shot noise dephasing in a superconducting qubit by eliminating its dispersive coupling to the readout cavity. This is achieved in a tunable coupling qubit, where the qubit frequency and coupling rate can be controlled independently. We observe that the coherence time approaches twice the relaxation time and becomes less sensitive to thermal photon noise when the dispersive coupling rate is tuned from several MHz to 22 kHz. This work provides a promising building block in circuit quantum electrodynamics that can hold high coherence and be integrated into larger systems.

Based upon projected local density of states (PLDOS) for photons, we develop a local coupling theory to simultaneously treat the weak and strong interaction between a quantum emitter and photons in arbitrary nanostructures. The PLDOS is mapped by an extremely flexible and efficient method. The recent experiment observation for the photonic crystal slabs is very well interpreted by our ab-initio PLDOS. More importantly, a bridge linking the PLDOS and cavity quantum electrodynamics is for the first time established to settle quality factor, g factor and vacuum Rabi splitting. Dipole-dipole interaction between two two-level `atoms' in photonic crystal nanocavity is investigated based on finite-difference time domain algorithm. This method includes both real and virtual photon effects and can be applied for dipoles with different transition frequencies in both weak and strong coupling regimes. Numerical validations have been made for dipoles in vacuum and in an ideal planar microcavity. For dipoles located in photonic crystal nanocavity, it is found that the cooperative decay parameters and the dipole-dipole interaction potential strongly depend on the following four factors: the atomic position, the atomic transition frequency, the resonance frequency, and the cavity quality factor. Properly arranging the positions of the two atoms, we can acquire equal value of the cooperative decay parameters and the local coupling strength. Large cooperative decay parameters can be achieved when transition frequency is equal to the resonance frequency. For transition frequency varying in a domain of the cavity linewidth around the resonance frequency, dipole-dipole interaction potential changes continuously from attractive to repulsive case. Larger value and sharper change of cooperative parameters and dipole-dipole interaction can be obtained for higher quality factor. Our results provide some manipulative approaches for dipole-dipole interaction with potential application in various fields such as quantum computation and quantum information processing based on solid state nanocavity and quantum dot system., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures
