Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the pathogenic bacteria in humans that causes a wide range of diseases. Biofilm formation protects S. aureus against adverse environmental conditions and the host immune system. The genes that encode the most important biofilm constituents belong to the ica operon, one of the most important of which is the icaA gene. Rifampin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and garlic has beneficial antimicrobial effects due to its active ingredient allicin. In the present study, the antimicrobial effect of garlic extract at the phenotypic and molecular level and its effect on icaA biofilm gene expression and its comparison with rifampin were investigated. Materials and Methods: A standard and two pathogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated. Antibiogram tests, minimum inhibitory concentration, and minimum bactericidal concentration were performed with rifampin antibiotic and garlic extract. A biofilm phenotypic test was performed with a 96-well microplate. After RNA extraction from the samples treated with rifampin and garlic extract, cDNA synthesis and then Real-time PCR were performed and the expression of icaA gene was measured. Results: The antibiogram test showed the antimicrobial effect of garlic extract on at least the standard strain and one of the pathogenic strains as compared to rifampin. The results of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined for all three strains for rifampin and the combined combination of rifampin and garcin were 375 and 750 μg / ml, respectively. Real-time PCR results showed that in all studied strains, garlic extract and rifampin were able to reduce the expression of icaA gene and the combined use of these two substances led to a significant reduction in the expression of this gene. For the standard strain, rifampin and garlic extract reduced icaA expression to 88% and 60% in the control sample, respectively, and the combination of these two substances resulted in a reduction of icaA biofilm gene expression by about 50%. Discussion and Conclusion: In general, it can be concluded that rifampin antibiotic can be effective in inhibiting pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Garlic (Allium sativum) has historically been associated with antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and microbiocidal properties, mainly due to its richness in thiosulfates and sulfur-containing phytoconstituents. Sepsis patients could benefit from these properties because it involves both inflammatory and refractory processes. We evaluated the effects of thiosulfinate-enriched Allium sativum extract (TASE) on the immune response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) by monocytes from healthy volunteers (HVs) and patients with sepsis. We also explored the TASE effects in HIF-1α, described as the key transcription factor leading to endotoxin tolerance in sepsis monocytes through IRAK-M expression. Our results showed TASE reduced the LPS-triggered reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in monocytes from both patients with sepsis and HVs. Moreover, this extract significantly reduced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 production in LPS-stimulated monocytes from HVs. However, TASE enhanced the inflammatory response in monocytes from patients with sepsis along with increased expression of human leukocyte antigen-DR. Curiously, these dual effects of TASE on immune response were also found when the HV cohort was divided into low- and high-LPS responders. Although TASE enhanced TNFα production in the LPS-low responders, it decreased the inflammatory response in the LPS-high responders. Furthermore, TASE decreased the HIF-1α pathway-associated genes IRAK-M, VEGFA and PD-L1 in sepsis cells, suggesting HIF-1α inhibition by TASE leads to higher cytokine production in these cells as a consequence of IRAK-M downregulation. The suppression of this pathway by TASE was confirmed in vitro with the prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor dimethyloxalylglycine. Our data revealed TASE's dual effect on monocyte response according to status/phenotype and suggested the HIF-1α suppression as the possible underlying mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nematicidal activity of garlic extracts is known on root–knot nematodes but never investigated on the grapevine nematode Xiphinema index. In this study, the nematicidal activity of a commercial garlic extract formulate (GEF) was assessed on X. index, both in vitro and in a pot assay. In the in vitro assays, mixed specimens of X. index were exposed to a 0–4 mL L−1 range of GEF concentrations, checking nematode immotility and mortality after 2, 4 or 8 h. In the experiments on potted grapevines, plants cultivated in soil infested by X. index were irrigated twice at a 15-day interval with 0.05, 0.2 and 0.5 mL L−1 solutions of GEF, including nontreated soil as a control. An almost complete mortality of X. index specimens occurred after a 2 h exposure to a 2 mL L−1 GEF concentration, while an 8 h exposure to even the 0.0312 and 0.0156 mL L−1 solutions resulted in about 50% and 30% mortality, respectively. Soil treatment with a 0.5 mL L−1 GEF solution significantly reduced the population of X. index and increased the grapevine root growth compared to nontreated soil or soil treated with the lower dosages. The current pilot study was conducted to compare the triple effect of garlic extract and metformin on hyperglycaemia, hypercholesterolaemia, and hypertriglyceridaemia in alloxan-induced type 1-like diabetic rats. Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. Control group included normal rats. The second group included alloxan-induced type 1-like diabetic rats, receiving no treatment. The other two groups of diabetic rats were orally treated with 0.75 g of garlic extract per kg of body weight and 0.05 of metformin g per kg of body weight respectively for four weeks. The pharmacological impact of garlic compounds on serum glucose and lipids as opposed to the glucose-lowering and lipid-lowering was highlighted in these experiments. These results revealed that garlic extract has a triple action on hyperglycaemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypercholesterolemia. Its effect on hyperglycaemia is long lasting, and more pronounced compared to the metformin. Interestingly, it had a regulatory effect on glycaemia as highlighted in the control group.

Beef is a perishable food product susceptible to deterioration due to microbial growth. Therefore, this study aimed to ascertain how active and intelligent packaging performs by tracking the change in the quality of fresh beef stored at low temperatures. The intelligent packaging method employed indicators with solutions of Bromo Phenol Blue (BPB) and Phenol Red (PR) to monitor the change in beef quality. Additionally, active packaging used garlic extract with various concentrations at 0%, 15%, and 20% to maintain the quality of beef packaged at 10 °C temperatures. The findings illustrated that a packaging indicator label can be implemented to monitor the change in the quality of fresh beef stored at 10 °C temperatures. This was signified by a change in the indicator color from dark yellow to orange and red, fading to purple. Meanwhile, observations on active packaging demonstrated that 15% and 20% of garlic extract were the most effective approaches for preserving beef quality. The correlation level of indicator label color analysis and the effectiveness of active packaging with all beef spoilage metrics demonstrated a positive correlation in preserving quality and identifying the degree of beef damage. A study was carried out for two seasons (2020/21 and 2021/22) to examine the effects of various natural extracts individually or in combination on the drought resistance of Iris tingitana cv. Wedgewood. A mixture of sand and clay (1:1 v/v) was prepared as a growth media. The treatments were (0, 25, and 50 % water drought) with liquid active biostimulants (garlic and seaweed) five times intervals after two weeks from bulb germination. The results revealed that plants at different soil moisture with various biostimulants succeeded in producing flowers of the best quality. Water drought at 25% also increased chlorophyll (a & b) and carotenoids in leaves, while drought at 0% recorded the highest increase in gibberellic acid (GA3). At 25%, vegetative growth and flower parameters were at their highest levels (GA3). Moreover, water drought at 50 % increased abscisic acid (ABA), proline, and catalase. Additionally, increases in vegetative growth, the number of leaves, flower parameters, chlorophyll (a & b), and carotenoids in leaves were noted as a result of applying seaweed extract at a concentration of 10 mL L-1; however, the best results for gibberellic acid were obtained using the highest concentration of garlic extract (500 mL L-1). The interactions between treatments indicated the superiority of growing bulbs at 25 % water drought with applying seaweed extracted at 10 mL L-1 that improved vegetative growth and most of the flower parameters. Meanwhile, treating plants at 25 % water drought with either seaweed at 5 mL L-1 or garlic extract at 500 mL L-1 realized the highest chlorophyll (a & b), carotenoids, and gibberellic acid. Context: Mucor circinelloides is reported to be the second among the most common causative agents of emerging mucormycosis. It is intrinsically resistant to most known antifungals. Further the use of antifungals cause side effects. Traditional knowledge system for treating various ailments is stronger in India and it also backs deriving various bioactive compounds from herbal sources, in the modern system of medicine. Therefore, two most commonly used culinary herbal materials viz., ginger and omam were studied in vitro against M. circinelloides, as an alternate to antifungal drugs. Aims: To explore the traditional herbal resources as alternate to Amphotericin B to use against M. circinelloides, a fungus causing mucormycosis. Methods and Material: Aqueous extracts of garlic and omam were prepared and tested against M. circinelloides, at different concentrations. A positive control with Amphotericin B and negative control without any supplements were also maintained. The inhibitory effect was assessed by adopting optical density (OD) measurement method in SD broth and SD Agar Well Plate using spore suspension as inoculum. Statistical Analysis Used: Paired student T test was employed using SPSS Version 1.6. Results and Conclusions: Both garlic and omam extracts were found to inhibit the M. circinelloides and their MICs were 600 and 700 μL/mL. It is comparable with the MIC of Amphotericin B, 200 μg/mL. Thus, the regular use of garlic and omam can reduce the risk of possible mucormycosis and these herbs can be explored for drug formulations against M. circinelloides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Nowadays, in order to increase growth performance and carcass composition, alternative feed additives are sought after as a result of the withdrawal of antibiotics employed as growth promoters in poultry feeding. Studies on the simultaneous use of several feed additives in turkey diets are not currently available. Therefore, we conducted a study to see how effective three feed additives (effective microorganisms and Humokarbowit added to the feed and garlic extract added to the drinking water) included in the diets of turkey hens were on the growth performance, gastrointestinal tract characteristics, and carcass composition. It was shown that the included feed additives in the diets and water increased the final body weight and decreased the feed conversion ratio throughout the rearing period. Birds from the E group (fed with additives) scored a higher dressing percentage, and their muscularity and fattening were improved. The breast muscles of turkey from group E featured a lower pH24 and were of lighter colour compared with those of the birds from group C (fed without additives). The study revealed that for Big 6 turkey hens, the use of effective microorganisms and Humokarbowit in the birds' diets and garlic extract in drinking water was recommendable in view of the improved growth performance and carcass composition. In order to increase growth performance and carcass composition, including meat quality, as demanded by modern customers, alternative feed additives are sought after as a result of the withdrawal of antibiotics employed as growth promoters in poultry feeding. Therefore, we conducted a study to see how effective three feed additives added to the diets and water of turkey hens were. The experiment consisted of 200 Big 6 turkey hens divided into two equinumerous groups (C and E), with five subgroups in each. The 14-week-long growth performance study comprised five feeding periods. Both groups of birds were fed complete feed rations with mineral and vitamin supplements. The factor differentiating the groups were effective microorganisms and Humokarbowit added to the birds' diets and garlic extract added to the drinking water in the experimental group (E) only. It was demonstrated that the included feed additives in the diets and water of turkey hens significantly increased (by 10%) the FBW and decreased (by 14%) the FCR throughout the rearing period. Birds from the E group scored significantly higher (by 3.6%) on the dressing percentage, and their muscularity and fattening grade were improved. Turkey fed rations containing the evaluated feed additives had a smaller share of the gastrointestinal tract in the body weight and a shorter duodenum and caecum (p ≤ 0.05). The muscles of turkey hens from group E featured a lower pH24 and were of lighter colour (p ≤ 0.05). To sum up, the use of effective microorganisms and Humokarbowit in the diets and garlic extract in the drinking water of turkey hens should be recommended in view of improved growth performance and carcass composition. The present study is an attempt to assess the protective and immunity effects of Allium sativum in Oncorhynchus mykiss to acute exposure to copper .55 rainbow trout fish with an average weight of 51.20 ± 3.73 g were subjected to various densities of copper (0.02, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.4 mg/l). Under stable conditions, the lethal concentration of copper was detected to be 0.40 mg/l. The treatments included a control with no Cu or garlic treatment (T1), feeding with garlic additive and Cu exposure (T2), and exposure to a lethal dose of Cu with no garlic additive (T3). The blood sample was used to designate hematological indices such as white blood cell (WBC) and red blood cell (RBC) count, hematocrit (HCT), hemoglobin (HB) mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils percent and Immunological indices (glucose, total protein, lysozyme, IgM). The results indicated significant differences among the treatments when the concentration of copper was increased (p < 0.05). According to the results obtained, there were noteworthy differences in MCV, MCHC, and HCT amongst the treatments (p < 0.05). The histopathological results indicated that the main lesions were hyperplasia and necrosis of epithelial cells (in gill), enlargement of Bowman's capsule and tubular degeneration (in kidney), hepatocytes necrosis (in liver) in all the fish. Pathologic severity signs in sampled tissues were increased by increasing in concentration and exposure times of copper sulphate However, the results revealed that the use of garlic in dietary can be beneficial to increasing fish resistance to copper. This study evaluated the efficacy of various inorganic materials, biological control agents, organic agricultural materials (OAMs), and essential oils for controlling cucumber powdery mildew (CPM) under greenhouse conditions. Treatments included silicate, bicarbonate, copper sulfate, sulfurbased compounds, Bacillus subtilis KB-401, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens M27, Bordeaux mixtures, chitosan combined with oxidated copper salt, chitooligosaccharides, and essential oils such as castor and rapeseed oil with lecithin. Results demonstrated that Bordeaux mixtures, particularly Bordeaux Mixture I, and sulfur-based compounds provided the most reliable CPM control among inorganic materials. Bacillus strains KB-401 and M27 achieved sustained disease suppression, suggesting their value in integrated pest management (IPM). Chitosan combined with oxidated copper salt showed high efficacy, making it a promising candidate for long-term control. Among OAMs, loess-sulfur mixtures proved especially effective in preventive applications, achieving comparable results to resistant cultivar 'Saronsamcheok'. Essential oils, including castor and rapeseed oil, also exhibited significant CPM suppression potential, although repeated applications may be necessary for sustained control. These findings highlight the potential of these environmentally friendly treatments as viable components of an IPM strategy for managing CPM in cucumber crops. Further studies are recommended to optimize combinations and application timing for enhanced efficacy.

Despite the broad research available in the literature dealing with garlic health benefits, little information is found regarding the functional properties of garlic components. The aim of this study was to evaluate the emulsification properties of garlic water-soluble compounds (GWSC), encompassing proteins, saponins, and carbohydrates, after heat treatment (10 min at 95 °C) or pH adjustments (2.5, 3.5, and 7.8). After the various treatments, the extracts were used as such or filtrated (0.45 µm), and 10% soybean oil-in-water emulsions were prepared using low (0.48%) or high (6.55% wt/wt) extract concentrations. Results showed that whereas at low GWSC concentrations, both heating and acidifying resulted in the formation of bigger oil droplet sizes (i.e., from d32 = 0.36 µm using unmodified extract to d32 = 7–22 µm at pH 2.5 with or without extract filtration), the effects were opposite at the highest GWSC concentration. In the latter, heat treatment clearly reduced the droplet size as observed from the micrographs as well as the degree of creaming, though the occurrence of depletion and/or bridging flocculation was still strong. The acidification of the extract at this high GWSC concentration significantly reduced the droplet size, as observed from the micrographs; however, a strong flocculation was observed. Removal of protein aggregates, and possibly also saponin micelles, from the extract resulted in an obvious increase in emulsion droplet size. This research brings valuable insights on this study and utilisation of novel natural food emulsifiers from plant sources.

Introduction: Garlic extract, due to its high volatility and its effects on organoleptic properties, has limitations for direct use in food products, and therefore it is better to encapsulate it by one of the different methods and then use it in food formulations. Nanocapsulation can highly protect the essential oils against degradation or oxidation and may increase dispersibility in aqueous media, reduce adverse interaction with food components, and it generally did not affect the antimicrobial activity of essential oils. Water-in-oil emulsions are used to encapsulate hydrophilic bioactive compounds, and the number of studies on this type of emulsion is low. In this research, it has been tried to surrounding garlic extract by surfactant and forms a water in oil nanoemulsion and its physicochemical and antimicrobial properties are measured in order to be used in suitable food formulations. Material and Methods: In this study, nanoemulsions containing garlic extract were produced by high energy method (ultrasound bath) and the effect of different percentages of the extract on droplet size, antimicrobial properties, release kinetics, and viscosity were investigated. Encapsulation efficiency was determined by comparing the total area under the peaks of the nanoemulsions and not emulsified mixture headspace in gas chromatography. The release of volatile compounds of garlic oil was recorded during storage time by gas chromatography. Microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration. TGA and FT-IR were also used to evaluate the thermal resistance and study the functional groups and confirm the presence of the compounds used in the formulation of the prepared nanoemulsions, respectively. Results: Drop size varied from 62 to 302 nm for nanoemulsions based on volume fraction. Microbial results showed that water-in-oil nanoemulsions in high concentrations of garlic extract had antimicrobial properties and a stronger effect against gram-positive bacteria. In general, in all emulsions, with increasing the volume fraction (percentage of garlic extract) from 5 to 25%, the viscosity increased from 50 to 150 cp. Evaluation of viscosity changes at different temperatures showed that the activation energy for samples with different volume fractions were not significantly different. Also, the release rate of volatiles increases with increasing volume fraction in nanoemulsion formulations and storage temperature.Conclusion: The present study showed that the application of water-in-oil nanoemulsion was effective for the encapsulating of garlic extract and antimicrobial properties were also observed in high concentrations of nanoemulsion. Analysis of the stability of produced nanoemulsions showed that the samples prepared in this study have a high potential for use in food formulations such as mayonnaise, buttermilk and shallot yogurt due to the ability of the encapsulation technique to cover the smell of garlic extract. Two field experiments were conducted in 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons, at Ras Sidr Experimental Station in south SinaiAffiliated to Desert Research Center, Mataria, Cairo Egypt in cooperation with the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Benha University, to study the effect of biogas fertilizer and natural extracts on vegetative characteristics and essential oil yield of Stevia rebaudiana L. plant. Results showed that biogas fertilizer along with different natural extracts exerted a significant influence on the growth characteristics and essential oil content of stevia. The highest values in most of the parameters in the first cut were found from T1 (recommended dose of chemical fertilizer) combining with (M4), (M5) or (M2). On the other hand, the second cut took the same line as the first cut but with T3 (50% NPK + biogas slurry at 5000 kg h-1) as (T3×M4) or (T3×M2) as drench addition registered the highest values of parameters mention before in most cases. Conclusively, the use of half (50%) of the recommended dose of chemical fertilizer with the equivalent of the recommended nitrogen content and replaced it with biogas fertilizer led to reducing the problem of the use of chemical fertilizers on the health and economic damages, in addition to the use of both extracts of Azolla and garlic as a drench addition with organic fertilization and half the dose of chemical fertilizer.

Two field experiments were conducted in 2019 and 2020 seasons at Desert Research Center, Mataria, Cairo, Egypt, and its experimental farm at Ras Sudr Experimental Station in South Sinai, in cooperation with the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture Benha University, to study the effect of biogas slurry fertilizer and natural extracts on biomass, chemical constituents, and quality of Stevia rebaudiana L. plant. Results showed that biogas fertilizer along with the different natural extracts exerted a significant influence on yield, chemical constituents, stevioside and rebaudioside A., of stevia. The highest values in most of the parameters i.e. shoot fresh and dry weights biomass, leaves fresh and dry weights biomass, N, P, K and pigments in the first cut by recommended dose of chemical fertilizer (T1) combining with garlic as drench addition, Yucca extract as a foliar spray or Azolla extract as drench addition (M4, M5 or M2,respectively). On the other hand, the second cut took the same line as the first cut but with 50% NPK + 5000 kg h-1 (T3) as either garlic extract or Azolla extract as drench addition (T3×M4 or T3×M2) as registered the highest values of parameters mention before in most cases. As for the highest values of stevioside and total stevioside content were recorded by 50% NPK + 3000 kg h-1 combining with Azolla aqueous extract as drench addition (T4×M2). Rebaudioside A., registered by combination of the recommended dose of biogas fertilizer and yucca aqueous extract as a foliar spray (T2×M5). Conclusively, the use of half (50%) of the recommended dose of chemical fertilizer with its equivalent of the recommended nitrogen dose and replaced with biogas fertilizer, in addition to the use of both extracts of Azolla and garlic as a drench addition, led to reducing nitrate accumulation as a problem of the use of chemical fertilizers on the human health and economic damages.

Implant associated infections (IAIs) place stress on patients and burden the healthcare system, and Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common pathogen involved. This study analyzed the effects of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) and sodium salicylate (SOD SAL) on the inhibition and eradication of S. epidermidis biofilms grown on titanium to find a potential remedy for IAIs. In the inhibition assay, bacterial suspensions were incubated with titanium discs and either AGE, SOD SAL, or both. In the eradication assay, bacteria cultured on titanium were treated with the treatments. The absorbance in optical density (OD) of each sample after treatment was analyzed using a spectrophotometer. AGE inhibited >40% of biofilm growth, whereas AGE and the combination treatment eradicated 17% of bacteria. It was concluded that AGE is better at inhibiting biofilm growth, but all treatments showed the same efficacy in eradicating pre-grown biofilm. Therefore, AGE could be used to treat and prevent IAIs.

Fish meat has very high water content, a very low content of connective tissue but has high digestibility. Raw fish is a very perishable food because it has all substances necessary for the development of microorganisms. Fish meat lipids are also very sensitive because they oxidize very quickly during storage. The aim of our research was to examine the influence of garlic extract and packaging methods on the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid content and pH value in fish fillets during storage at low temperatures. 48 fillets of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were studied. The fish fillets were randomly assigned to four batches of 12 samples each (C-control and experimental batches E1, E2 and E3) and marinated in a solution with garlic extract in proportion of 0‰ (C), 3‰ (E1), 6‰ (E2) and 9‰ for 12 hours. For each batch, six fillets were individually vacuum packed and six fillets were individually packed in plastic boxes. The samples were stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 0...+4°C for six days. The studied parameters were determined after marinating, on the 1st, 3rd and 6th day of storage. The raw data obtained was processed by biostatistical methods using the One-Way Anova test, including the Tukey HSD test of the SPPS Statistics application. In the storage period, the amount of TBA increased progressively at each stage of the examination (30 min., 1, 3 and 6 days, respectively), and the amounts in the control samples were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) than those in the E1, E2 and E3 samples. Also, the lowest values after 6 days of refrigeration were recorded in the marinated samples and vaccum packed. The lower values recorded in marinated samples were influnced by the antioxidant effect of the garlic extract used. Leucorrhoea is a condition frequently experienced by women. If it is not appropriately treated, it can become a more severe problem. Leucorrhoea is caused by “Candida albicans” fungus infection. Garlic (Allium sativum Linn) has antibacterial and antifungal activity, where garlic can inhibit the growth of the Candida albicans. This study aims to determine the optimal formulation of feminine liquid soap from garlic extract (Allium sativum Linn) with good physical quality; thus, garlic in treating Leucorrhoea can be practically easier. Optimization of liquid soap formulation used carbopol and sodium lauryl sulfate with various concentration variations. The method included organoleptic observation, pH, and specific gravity for one-month storage to obtain a good physical quality of liquid soap. The result showed that the formula with 10% sodium lauryl sulfate met the physical quality test requirements of feminine liquid soap; thus, the formulation of feminine liquid soap with 10% sodium lauryl sulfate was optimal.

Background: The expression of most genes involved in pathogenesis in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is controlled and regulated by a gene system called quorum sensing (QS). The purpose of this study was to investigate the quorum quenching of garlic extract in preventing the expression of genes involved in QS system of P. aeruginosa. Methods: In the present cross-sectional study, 12 P. aeruginosa strains were collected from burn wounds, cultured on special media and then confirmed by differential tests. The PCR test was performed to detect the lasI and lasR genes. The expression level of lasI gene was assessed in the presence of garlic extract and tobramycin antibiotic by real-time PCR, and the active ingredient of garlic extract was analyzed by HPLC. Results: Examination of 12 strains cultured on special and differential media showed that all 12 strains were P. aeruginosa. The PCR results indicated that all strains had 100% lasI and lasR genes. The real-time PCR results also revealed that the garlic extract was able to reduce the expression level of lasI gene in P. aeruginosa. It was found that tobramycin has a greater ability to reduce the expression level of this gene compared with garlic extract. Conclusion: This study showed that the garlic extract could reduce the expression of lasI gene in P. aeruginosa isolates, and that the active ingredients of this extract could be used to treat infections as an alternative to antibiotic therapy.

The limited therapeutic options associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) necessitate search for innovative strategies particularly, use of natural extracts such as lyophilized royal jelly (LRJ) and garlic extract (GE). Therefore, out study aimed to formulate emulgels containing different concentrations of both LRJ and GE and to evaluate their activities using a murine model infected with MRSA clinical isolate. Four plain emulgel formulas were prepared by mixing stearic acid/yellow soft paraffin-based O/W emulsion formulae based on Carbopol 940, Na alginate, Na carboxymethylcellulose or Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose E4. Sodium alginate-based emulgel was selected for preparation of four medicated emulgel formulations combining LRJ and GE at four different concentrations. The selected medicated emulgels were used for the in vivo studies. The emulgel formulated with Na alginate and HPMC (MF3) exhibited optimum smooth homogeneous consistency, neutral pH, acceptable viscosity, spreadability, extrudability values and best storage stability properties. In vivo results revealed that, the wounds infected with MRSA isolate in rates were wet (oozing) and showed pus formation when compared to injured uninfected wounds. MF3 formula containing 4% LRJ and 50% GE showed the maximum wound healing properties, both in the apparent physical wound healing measurements and in the histopathological examination. In conclusion, the medicated emulgel formulation (MF3) prepared with Na alginate was found optimum for topical application. MF3 formula containing 4% LRJ and 50% GE has shown the highest in vivo wound healing capacities. Further clinical studies should be conducted to prove both its safety and efficacy and the potential use in human. Background: This study aimed to determine the effect of garlic consumption and endurance training on the serum levels of some pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in female mice with breast cancer. Methods: This study is an experimental research randomly conducted on 32 female BALB/c mice divided into 4 equal groups (N = 8), including: Cancer Control (CC), Garlic Supplementation (GS), Endurance Training (ET), Endurance Training + Garlic Supplementation (ET + GS). One million cancerous cells were injected to all mice's upper right thigh using the subcutaneous injection method. Exercise groups performed endurance training for 8 weeks (5 days a week .(Garlic supplement groups received 1 ml of the garlic extract orally per kilogram of body weight. The control groups -were not given any task, activity or exercise during the research. At the end of the research, all the mice were anesthetized, and their blood samples were collected. Results: The period of 8-week simultaneous endurance exercise and consumption of garlic supplement significantly decreased the serum level of interleukin-6 (F = 75 P = 0.00), interleukin-8 (F = 97.9 P = 0.00), and interleukin-17 (F = 95.7 P = 0.00), and increased the serum level of interleukin-10 (F = 50.4 P = 0.00). Conclusions: Along with other existing methods, reduction of inflammatory factors, endurance exercises and consumption of garlic supplement have been proved to be an extremely effective treatment for breast cancer patients. One of the main problems in rice cultivation is the difficulty of controlling bondol bird (Lonchura punctulata) pest attacks. Bird pest is one of the main enemies of farmers that can reduce crop production. Increasing bird populations cause crop yields to decline. So that one way that can be used in repelling bird pests is by giving pesticides from garlic extract. Allicin is a compound that gives garlic its distinctive smell which repels bird pests. This study aims to determine the effect of the provision of plant-based pesticides from garlic extract in repelling rice-eating bird pests. This research was conducted in Tonasa Village, Takalar District, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Research implementation methods include the manufacture and testing of pesticides liquid extracts of garlic and application in the field by spraying, this spraying is carried out in the morning, afternoon, and evening before making the observations. Observation parameters use the method of comparing initial observations and final observations observed in the morning, afternoon and evening (comparison method) by conducting initial data collection (without using pesticides) and final data collection (after spraying pesticides), the average number of groups of birds that attack 1 Ha of rice fields. The results obtained on average indicate quite a lot of attacks in a day, especially in the morning. After the use of the automatic repellent method the attacks of bondol bird groups tend to decrease where in the morning ratio of 20 to 33 decreases to 5 to 13 attacks, while the ratio of daytime 8 to 15 decreases to 3 to 7 attacks and the ratio of the evening 19 to 33 decreases to 6 to 12 bird group attacks. So that the administration of garlic extract pesticides is effective in reducing bird pest attacks.

This study aimed to determine the effect of swimming training (SW) alone or combined with garlic extract on renal and hepatic cells apoptosis, as wellas on the liver and kidney function biomarkers in old rats.Methods: A total of 35 old rats (aged 40– 50 weeks) were randomly divided into 5 groups including control, saline (S), exercise training (ET), garlic (G) and exercise training+ garlic (ET.G) groups. Exercise was started for 5 min/day and then gradually extended to 60 min/day and the G and E+G groups received 1 mL/kg of this mixture by gavage. Twenty-four hours after completion of 8 weeks training, liver, kidney and blood samples were collected for histopathological examinations, liver and kidney functions, oxidative stress and apoptosis biomarkers.Results: The tissue sections of the SW exercise, control and saline groups showed some mild histopathological changes in liver and kidney, while SW supplemented with garlic prevented these damages. The SW alone or supplemented with garlic significantly increased the Bcl-2 value and declined the BAX level in both liver and kidney (p< 0.05). The activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the liver and kidney of the control and saline groups were lower than those in E, G and G+E groups, while a significant increase for malondialdehyde (MDA) value was found in the control and saline groups. Furthermore, the E+G significantly declined the activity of hepatic (ALT, AST and ALP) and renal damage (uric acid, urea and creatinine) biomarkers compared to the control and saline groups (p< 0.05).Discussion: Swimming exercise supplemented with garlic extract not only improves antioxidant capacity but also declines oxidative damages and apoptosis through reducing Bax levels and enhancing Bcl-2 value.Keywords: apoptosis, garlic extract, antioxidant, oxidative stress, swimming exercise, old rats

Abstract Background Garlic extract is a highly nutritive value extract; it contains large number of important enzymes and more than 200 biochemical compounds such as antioxidants and vitamins. Ascorbic acid and nicotinamide are considered as antioxidants and also known as growth-regulating compounds that influence different physiological and biochemical processes in plants. Methodology A field experiment was conducted in sandy soil during two successive seasons of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 at Research and Production Station, National Research Centre, El-Nubaria Province, El-Behera Governorate, Egypt. The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of foliar application of garlic extract (5%), ascorbic acid (200 ppm) and nicotinamide (50 ppm) compared with tap water on growth, some biochemical aspects, yield, yield components and some chemical components of three faba bean cultivars (Vicia faba L, cv., Nubaria-1, Nubaria-2 and Giza-843). Results The obtained results showed that Nubaria-1 was superior to Nubaria-2 and Giza-843 in all growth and yield criteria in the growing seasons except plant height was superior in Nubaria-2. Foliar treatment of garlic extract had the superiority effect in all characters of growth and yield and its components, and consequently increased significantly all yield criteria of Nubaria-1 cultivar. Data clearly showed that the effect of different treatments caused marked increases in photosynthetic pigments, indole acetic acid, phenolics, carbohydrate constituents, free amino acids and proline contents of Nubaria 1 cultivar which was sprayed by garlic extract at 5% followed by nicotinamide and ascorbic acid, respectively. Conclusions In general, the current research suggested that garlic extract at 5% as a foliar application increased the quantity of faba bean cultivars grown under sandy soil conditions. Therefore, garlic extract at the rate of 5% and Nubaria1 encourage the farmers to use of garlic extract to give promising seed yield under reclaimed sandy soil.

Leaf blight of mustard is one of the major constraints for its successful cultivation and may be attributed to cause substantially high yield losses. Integrated Disease Management (IDM) practices, found suitable against Alternaria blight, developed and evaluated elsewhere, are here by tested and validated as IDM module with slight modifications as per local requirements. This is basically to demonstrate the benefit of good available technology to farmers as on farm trials (OFT). The comparative efficacy of four different treatments were incredibly convincing for the farmers. It was realized that all three modules were significantly superior over prevailing farmers’ practice. Overall, seed treatment with aqueous garlic bulb extract @ 5% (w/v) along with one spray of aqueous garlic bulb extract @5% (w/v) at 45 DAS followed by one foliar spray of Mancozeb-75% WP @ 2.5g/l at 75 DAS (T4) found most effective in reducing disease incidence consecutively for three years and average reduction in disease severity of 71.90%. Besides, reduction in disease severity significant increase in yield and yield attributing characters could be observed using this treatment. The average yield increase of 37.30% could be recorded with maximum B:C of 2.56. In this way, treatment improved production and other yield parameters without imposing any drastic input burden to farmers, as evidenced by cost and benefit estimates. Therefore, it can be concluded that T4 can be considered for improved sustainable package of practice for Alternaria blight management of Mustard

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of in ovo injection of alcoholic garlic extract on hatching traits, liver enzymes, and antioxidant status of broiler chickens post-hatch. In total, 625 broiler breeder eggs (ROSS 308 strain with an average weight of 58.5 g) were divided into 5 treatments (each treatment had three replicates). At 0 embryonic day, the eggs were injected as follows: the first treatment without in ovo injection (negative control), eggs of second treatment were injected with 100 μL.egg-1 distilled water (sham control). The third, fourth, and fifth treatments were injected with 50, 100, and 150 μL.egg-1 of an alcoholic garlic extract respectively. The chicks were reared for 4 weeks after hatching according to in ovo treatments. Hatchability, embryonic mortality, chicks' weight, serum AST, ALT, GPx, SOD activities, and MDA concentration were all measured. The results showed that the hatchability of the fifth treatment was higher (P≤0.05) than those of the other treatments. On the other hand, the embryonic mortality of the fifth treatment was recorded less (P≤0.05) than those of the other treatments. The results of serum AST, ALT, GPx, SOD activities, and MDA concentration were non different significance (P>0.05) among treatments. It is concluded that a garlic extract injection with 150 μL.egg-1 improved hatchability and reduced embryonic mortality. Moreover, it did not affect the chick's weight, serum liver enzymes, and antioxidant status post-hatch.

The aim of this study was to determine the impact of subclinical mastitis treatment in dairy cattle on biomarkers registered with in-line sensors such as milk yield (MY), electric milk conductivity (EC), rumination time (RT), and somatic cell count (SCC). At the start of the experiment, all cows according to SCC level were divided into two groups: healthy cows (n = 30, with SCCs less than 200,000 per mL and without the growth of bacteria in the milk samples) and cows with subclinical mastitis (n = 32), with SCC levels greater than 200,000 per mL and with growth of bacteria. Streptococcus spp. was found in 15 samples, and Strep. uberis was found in 17 samples. Streptococcus spp. and Strep. uberis were sensitive to amoxicillin and calvulanic acid. According to these results, 32 cows with subclinical mastitis were treated with two treatment protocols: one 1 (n = 16) and two (n = 16). In the first protocol, we used SCC boluses and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (SCCB and NSAID). The second protocol consists of intramammary antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications (Synulox LC and NSAIDs). All parameters (MY, EC, RT, and SCC) were recorded with Lely Astronaut® A3 milking robots on the day of mastitis diagnosis (0 day) and 14 days after treatment began. All animal experimental procedures were approved by the ethical committee; the approval number is PK01696. On the basis of our findings, we may infer that SCC boluses and NSAIDs are effective in treating subclinical mastitis. After 14 days of treatment, the electrical conductivity of milk in cows treated with AB and NSAID was also higher in all quarters of the udder compared to cows treated with SCCB + NSAID. The RT of cows on disease diagnosis day of cows treated with AB and NSAID was 11.41% lower compared to cows treated with SCCB and NSAID, while the RT of cows after 14 days treated with AB and NSAID was 7.01% lower compared to cows treated with SCCB and NSAID. On the practical side, for treatment of subclinical mastitis, we recommend using a feed supplement SCC bolus (one per os) with a composition containing Meloxicam 20 mg with a single subcutaneous injection at a dosage of 2.5 mL per 100 kg body weight.

The nematicidal activity of garlic extracts is known on root–knot nematodes but never investigated on the grapevine nematode Xiphinema index. In this study, the nematicidal activity of a commercial garlic extract formulate (GEF) was assessed on X. index, both in vitro and in a pot assay. In the in vitro assays, mixed specimens of X. index were exposed to a 0–4 mL L−1 range of GEF concentrations, checking nematode immotility and mortality after 2, 4 or 8 h. In the experiments on potted grapevines, plants cultivated in soil infested by X. index were irrigated twice at a 15-day interval with 0.05, 0.2 and 0.5 mL L−1 solutions of GEF, including nontreated soil as a control. An almost complete mortality of X. index specimens occurred after a 2 h exposure to a 2 mL L−1 GEF concentration, while an 8 h exposure to even the 0.0312 and 0.0156 mL L−1 solutions resulted in about 50% and 30% mortality, respectively. Soil treatment with a 0.5 mL L−1 GEF solution significantly reduced the population of X. index and increased the grapevine root growth compared to nontreated soil or soil treated with the lower dosages. Results of this study indicated that garlic-based nematicides could be an effective tool for X. index management in organic and integrated vineyards.

Scope: Garlic extract (GE) has been shown to ameliorate hyperglycemia in diabetic rats (DRs) by increasing insulin production. However, the mechanism through which it exerts its effects remains unclear. Here, it investigates the molecular process and the origin of regenerating β-cell in rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in response to GE., Methods and Results: In this study, quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and immunohistochemical analysis are carried out after pancreas isolation. These findings show that 1 week of GE treatment increases the expression of the endocrine progenitor cell markers Neurogenin3 (Neurog3), pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 (Pdx1), neurogenic differentiation factor 1 (Neurod1), paired box proteins (Pax)4, V-maf musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene homolog B (Mafb), and NK homeobox factors (Nkx)6-1 in STZ-induced DRs. Continuation with GE treatment for 8 weeks causes the expression of the mature β-cell markers insulin(Ins)2, urocortin3 (Ucn3), and glucose transporter 2 (Glut2) to peak. Comprehensive examination of the islet through immunohistochemical analysis reveals the presence of a heterogeneous cell population including INS+/GLUT2- and INS+/GLUT2+ β-cell subpopulations with few bihormonal INS+/GCG+ cells after 4 weeks. By week 8, islet architecture is reestablished, and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion was restored through the upregulation of Ucn3., Conclusion: GE induces β-cell neogenesis in DRs and restores islet architecture. Complex bone diseases such as osteomyelitis, osteosarcoma, and osteoporosis often cause critical-size bone defects that the body cannot self-repair and require an advanced bone graft material to repair. We have fabricated 3D-printed tricalcium phosphate bone scaffolds functionalized with garlic extract (GE). GE was encapsulated in a nanoemulsion (GE-NE) to enhance bioavailability and stability. GE-NE showed ∼73% drug encapsulation efficiency, with an average particle size of 158 nm and a zeta potential of -14.2 mV. Release of GE-NEs from the scaffold displayed a controlled and biphasic release profile at both acidic and physiological mediums. Results from the osteosarcoma study show that GE-NE demonstrated ∼88% reduction in cancer cell growth while exhibiting no cytotoxicity toward bone-forming cells. Interaction for the functionalized scaffold with Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a substantial reduction in bacteria growth by more than 90% compared to the unfunctionalized scaffold. These findings demonstrate the potential of GE-NEs-treated porous scaffolds to treat bone-related diseases, particularly for non-load bearing applications.

Two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the most important polyphagous pest on a wide range of cultivated, outdoor and protected crops worldwide. In this study, lethal and sub-lethal effects of garlic, Allium sativum Linnaeus extracts on the females and eggs of T. urticae was evaluated in laboratory conditions. The results showed that the mortality percentages of the females of T. urticae were significantly increased in the treated specimens compared with the controls in garlic ethanol extract treatment (88.52 ± 3.45%). Moreover, in the highest and lowest duration of embryonic development were recorded in ethanol with 6.09 ± 0.03 and acetic acid with 3.87 ± 0.07 days, respectively. Generally, the garlic extract had the appreciable effect from the viewpoint of mortality and sub-lethal effect (reduction of the oviposition). Glycation of various biomolecules contributes to structural changes and formation of several high molecular weight fluorescent and non-fluorescent, advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs and glycation are involved in various health complications. Synthetic medicines, including metformin, have several adverse effects. Natural products and their derivatives are used in the treatment of various diseases due to their significant therapeutic qualities. Allium sativum (garlic) is used in traditional medicines because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties. This study aimed to determine the anti-glycating and AGEs inhibitory activities of garlic. Biochemical and biophysical analyses were performed for in vitro incubated human serum albumin (HSA) with 0.05 M of glucose for 1, 5, and 10 weeks. Anti-glycating and AGEs inhibitory effect of garlic was investigated in glycated samples. Increased biochemical and biophysical changes were observed in glycated HSA incubated for 10 weeks (G-HSA-10W) as compared to native HSA (N-HSA) as well as glycated HSA incubated for 1 (G-HSA-1W) and 5 weeks (G-HSA-5W). Garlic extract with a concentration of ≥6.25 µg/mL exhibited significant inhibition in biophysical and biochemical changes of G-HSA-10W. Our findings demonstrated that garlic extract has the ability to inhibit biochemical and biophysical changes in HSA that occurred due to glycation. Thus, garlic extract can be used against glycation and AGE-related health complications linked with chronic diseases in diabetic patients due to its broad therapeutic potential. Background: Litopenaeus vannamei is one of the most perishable foods due to microorganism growth. Using essential oil-based nanoemulsion as a biodegradable and edible coating can enhance the shelf life of shrimp at refrigerated temperature through retarding microbial growth compared to synthetic coatings. Methods: Zein was extracted from 50 g dry milled corn with ethanol. Garlic essential oil was prepared by mixing with Tween 80. Nanoemulsion was prepared in an ultrasonic bath. DLS analysis, turbidity, and stability of nanoemulsionswere performed. Radical scavenging activity, and total phenol contentwere done for evaluation of garlic essential oil and nanoemulsion. A 10% zein solution was prepared using ethanol 95% and glycerol plasticizer (2.5%). In the end, various microbial analysis, peroxide value, the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) value, the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values, and sensory evaluations of different shrimp samples were determined. Results: Corn zein along with garlic-based nanoemulsion, had a great impact on the TVB-N, TBARS, and peroxide value (which indicated that z+24% garlic nanoemulsion group was the lowest among other groups on days 3, 7, and 14 (p < 0.05) as well as microbial properties (garlic EO nanoemulsion had significantly better antibacterial effectiveness compared to other groups (p < 0.05)), and sensory evaluation (the z+24% garlic nanoemulsion sample received a significantly higher score than other groups (p < 0.05)) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Conclusions: Corn zein nanoemulsion functioned as an antioxidant and antimicrobial agent, increasing the shelf life of Litopenaeus vannamei at refrigerated temperature. Practical Application: Emerging nanotechnology-based approaches with no side-effects on immune system of consumers plays a vital role in bioactive packaging, and on reduction of food spoilage or food poisoning in the transportation, exporting, and distribution stages of food products, especially marine-based products with cold chain transportation. Additionally, it can reduce aquaculture and environmental risks due to the usage of chemical agents used in packaging. Our results showed that administration of a corn zein with nanoemulsion of garlic extract can prolong shelf life of Litopenaeus vannamei. Beef is a perishable food product susceptible to deterioration due to microbial growth. Therefore, this study aimed to ascertain how active and intelligent packaging performs by tracking the change in the quality of fresh beef stored at low temperatures. The intelligent packaging method employed indicators with solutions of Bromo Phenol Blue (BPB) and Phenol Red (PR) to monitor the change in beef quality. Additionally, active packaging used garlic extract with various concentrations at 0%, 15%, and 20% to maintain the quality of beef packaged at 10 °C temperatures. The findings illustrated that a packaging indicator label can be implemented to monitor the change in the quality of fresh beef stored at 10 °C temperatures. This was signified by a change in the indicator color from dark yellow to orange and red, fading to purple. Meanwhile, observations on active packaging demonstrated that 15% and 20% of garlic extract were the most effective approaches for preserving beef quality. The correlation level of indicator label color analysis and the effectiveness of active packaging with all beef spoilage metrics demonstrated a positive correlation in preserving quality and identifying the degree of beef damage. Therefore, these active and intelligent packaging indicators can be applied to monitor and retain the quality of packaged beef.

Garlic contains bioactive compounds such as organosulfur, phenols and saponins with biological activities, namely antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory anticancer, hepatoprotective, cardiovascular protective, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, renal protective, neuroprotective antibacterial, and antifungal. However, its organosulfur compounds are chemically unstable and susceptible to degradation, volatilization and oxidation when exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as high temperature, oxygen and light. This review describes the main encapsulation methods used to protect bioactive compounds obtained from two derived garlic products (garlic essential oil (GEO) and garlic extract (GE)). The fundamental principles, advantages, disadvantages/limitations of encapsulation methods, namely molecular inclusion, spray drying, complex coacervation, and three types of lipid-based nanoencapsulation methods (nanoemulsions, nanoliposomes and nanophytosomes) are highlighted. Each of these techniques is discussed, since the choice of the most suitable encapsulation technique depends upon the processing conditions involved during the production of nano(micro)particles and its final applications. This review also covers the techniques used to characterize the physicochemical, structural and thermal properties of nano(micro)particles, such as zeta potential, rheological measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM, respectively). The spray drying technique revealed the least suitable technique, since the high inlet air temperature involved in the drying process causes loss of garlic heat-sensitive compounds. The GEO and GE nano(micro)particles have high potential to be used as active ingredients in food products, and to act as antimicrobial and insecticide agents. Abstract Background & aim: Heart disease is a major cause of mortality in elderly people, and oxidative stress and inflammation lead to changes in myocardium, resulting in apoptosis and cardiac hypertrophy. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of regular aerobic training along with garlic extract consumption on SOD, MDA, CAT, IL-10, and TNF-α levels in the heart tissue of elderly rats with chronic kidney disease. Abstract This study indented to assess the clinical and radiographic assessment of Allium sativum extract as an intracanal irrigant for pulpectomy of primary molars. Ninety children with 110 teeth submitted were categorized into two groups. Clinical and radiographic success rates were checked at 3, 6, and 12 months. Qui‐square test at a level of significance was ˂0.05. There was no statistically significant difference (p ˂ .05) between the two groups that has not been detected clinically or radiographically. Clinical and radiographic success rates of garlic extract at 3 months were (80% and 72.7%), which declined at 6 and 12 months to be 76.4% 6 and 74.5% respectively. For NaOCl group, clinical and radiographic success rates were 87.3% and 85.5% at 3 months, 87.3% and 87.3% at 6 months and 89.1% and 87.3% at 12 months. A. sativum extract can be used efficiently as an irrigant for pulpectomy of primary molar root canals.

Background and Objective: Fenvalerate is a component of the pyrethroid pesticide induces oxidative stress. This study was done to determine the effect of garlic extract (GE) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) against fenvalerate-induced oxidative stress in the serum and testis tissue of rat. Methods: In this experimental study, 42 Wistar rats were randomly allocated into 7 groups including: control group, sham group (normal saline), the first experimental group receiving NAC (80 mg/kg/bw), the second experimental group receiving fenvalerate (10 mg/kg/bw), the third experimental group receiving fenvalerate (10 mg/kg/bw) + garlic extract (40 mg/kg/bw), the fourth experimental group receiving fenvalerate (10 mg/kg/bw) + NAC (80 mg/kg/bw) and the fifth experimental group receiving fenvalerate (10 mg/kg/bw) + garlic extract (40 mg/kg/bw) + NAC (80 mg/kg/bw). Injection of fenvalerate was performed intraperitoneally for 7 consecutive days in animals of intervention groups. Afterwards, for 10 consecutive days, NAC and garlic extract were injected. Edible packaging is a relatively new technology for food preservation, many research on edible coat-ing had been conducted and it proved to prolong storage life and to improve the quality of food products. The main objective of this research was to investigate the shelf-life of pempek coated with edible bionanocomposite made from cassava starch, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and garlic extract. Bionanocomposite edible coating Z3B20 (containing ZnO-NPs 3% and garlic extract 20%) and Z3B30 (ZnO-NPs 3% and garlic extract 20%) were applied on pempek products. The parameters observed were total microbes, total Staphylococcus aureus, texture, total volatile nitrogen (TVN), moisture content, pH during storage at room temperature for 0, 6, 24 and 48 hours. The results showed that the total microbe numbers increased during the storage. Pempek coated with Z3B20 has a total microbes of 6.00 log CFU/g which was lower than that of control (6.99 log CFU/g). Meanwhile pempek coated with Z3B30 has Staphylococcus aureus counts of 2.93 log CFU/g which was lower than the control (4.05 log CFU/g) and pempek coated with Z3B30 stored for 48 hours (3.64 log CFU/g). The TVN values increased during storage from 17.33 mg/100 g to 18.94 mg/100 g while those in Z2B30 and Z3B30 decreased to 14.80 mg/100 g in Z3B30, respectively. The hardness increased during storage from 9.93 N in control, to 10.01 N in Z2B30 and 13.15 N in Z3B30, respectively. All coated pempeks after storage up to 48 hours had higher moisture contents. On the other hand, the pHs decreased for all samples during storage. Based on the total microbe numbers and TVN values, it can be concluded that the coated pempek stored for 24-hour or less were acceptable for consumption.

Doogh is a fermented dairy beverage which its shelf-life can be reduced by the activity of microorganisms and chemical and sensory changes of product. This study aimed at producing a heat treated doogh using combination of dill (0.05, 0.075, and 0.1%) and garlic (0.04, 0.06, and 0.08%) extracts as biopreservatives. This investigation was carried out during 2019 and 2020 seasons on seven-years-old Manfalouty pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) trees grown in a private orchard located at An Nikhaylah, Abu Tij, Assiut Governorate, Egypt to study the effect of compost tea or botanical extracts of licorice root, garlic cloves and moringa leaves foliar spray as natural growth stimulants on manfalouty pomegranate trees. Results revealed that all treatments significantly increased the qualities and quantities of fruit traits. But it is preferred, under Upper Egypt conditions to Spray 10% compost tea or 1.5% moringa extracts for improving fruit weight, chemical characteristics and productivity whilst spraying 0.5% licorice root extract is preferred to obtain the highest fruit size, in addition to garlic cloves extract (1%) which is preferred for reducing the fruit acidity %. The aim of this study was to improve the growth and inhibitory activity of the selected Lactobacillus isolate. A total of twenty samples of dairy products (fresh yogurt) were collected. Seven isolates of Lactobacillus species . were obtained, and identified as three Lactobacillus fermentum, three Lactobacillus acidophilus and one of Lactobacillus brevis. The growth of lactobacillus acidophilus was counted, also inhibitory activity of Lactobacillus acidophilus against some pathogenic bacteria was tested) for two different incubation periods before the addition of Allium sativum(garlic extract) as prebiotic substances. three different concentrations of it were used by addition of it to De Man, Rogosa and Sharpe agar (MRS) medium as prebiotic substances, and two incubation periods (24, 48) hour. The effect of Allium sativum on the growth of probiotic bacteria was evaluated, measurement of Lactobacillus acidophilus growth curve was done after and before adding garlic extract. For analyzing inhibitory activity of Lactobacillus acidophilus with the Allium,results showed that Lactobacillus acidophilus propagated in MRS fortified with 20% and 30% v/v garlic extract with incubation period 24 hr by giving the highest inhibition zone.
