Actual evapotranspiration modeling is providing useful information for researchers and resource managers in agriculture and water resources around the world. The performance of models depends on the accuracy of forcing inputs and model parameters. We developed an improved approach to the parameterization of the Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model using the Forcing and Normalizing Operation (FANO). SSEBop has two key model parameters that define the model boundary conditions. The FANO algorithm computes the wet-bulb boundary condition using a linear FANO Equation relating surface temperature, surface psychrometric constant, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The FANO parameterization was implemented on two computing platforms using Landsat and gridded meteorological datasets: (1) Google Earth Engine (GEE) and (2) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center Science Processing Architecture (ESPA). Evaluation was conducted by comparing modeled actual evapotranspiration (ETa) estimates with AmeriFlux eddy covariance (EC) and water balance ETa from level-8 Hydrologic Unit Code sub-basins in the conterminous United States. FANO brought substantial improvements in model accuracy and operational implementation. Compared to the earlier version (v0.1.7), SSEBop FANO (v0.2.6) reduced grassland bias from 47% to −2% while maintaining comparable bias for croplands (11% versus −7%) against EC data. A water balance-based ETa bias evaluation showed an overall improvement from 7% to −1%. Climatology versus annual gridded reference evapotranspiration (ETr) produced comparable ETa results, justifying the use of climatology ETr for the global SSEBop Landsat ETa that is accessible through the ESPA website. Besides improvements in model accuracy, SSEBop FANO increases the spatiotemporal coverage of ET modeling due to the elimination of high NDVI requirements for model parameterization. Because of the existence of potential biases from forcing inputs and model parameters, continued evaluation and bias corrections are necessary to improve the absolute magnitude of ETa for localized water budget applications.

Increasingly, pregnant people in the United States are choosing to give at birth at home, and certified professional midwives (CPMs) often attend these births. Care by midwives, including home birth midwives, has the potential to decrease unnecessary medical interventions and their associated health care costs, as well as to improve maternal satisfaction with care. However, lack of integration into the health care system affects the ability of CPMs to access standard medications and testing for their clients, including prenatal screening. Genetics and genomics are now a routine part of prenatal screening, and genetic testing can contribute to identifying candidates for planned home birth. However, research on genetics and midwifery care has not, to date, included the subset of midwives who attend the majority of planned home births, CPMs. The purpose of this study was to examine CPMs' access to, and perspectives on, one aspect of prenatal care, genetic counselors and genetic counseling services. Using semi-structured interviews and a modified grounded theory approach to narrative analysis, we identified three key themes: (1) systems-level issues with accessing information about genetic counseling and genetic testing; (2) practice-level patterns in information delivery and self-awareness about knowledge limitations; and (3) client-level concerns about the value of genetic testing relative to difficulties with access and stress caused by the information. The results of this study can be used to develop decision aids that include information about genetic testing and genetic counseling access for pregnant people intending home births in the United States. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of microbial inoculant and cottonseed cake on the fermentation profile, microbial population, aerobic stability, organic acids, chemical composition and losses of millet silages. The experimental design was completely randomised, in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with the following treatments: (1) Control (millet); (2) Millet + 10% cottonseed cake (on a natural matter basis); (3) Millet + Weissella cibaria – heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria; (4) Millet + cottonseed cake and Weissella cibaria (blend); and two opening times (30 and 90 days after ensiling) with four replications, totalling 32 experimental units. Silages containing cottonseed cake had greater (P =.008) dry matter recovery. There was effect (P <.001) of the opening time on the counts of lactic acid bacteria, mould and yeast, and under aerobic stability, which were higher in silages opened at 90 days. The addition of cottonseed cake resulted in an increase in the nutritional quality of the silage, compared to control silages and silages inoculated with Weissella cibaria. The addition of cottonseed cake in millet silage proved to be efficient in reducing silage losses, improving the fermentation profile and nutritional value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a peroxisomal metabolic disorder associated with mutations in the ATP-binding cassette sub-family D member1 (ABCD1) gene. Practically all male patients with X-ALD develop adrenocortical insufficiency during childhood and progressive myelopathy and peripheral neuropathy in adulthood. However, some male patients develop a fatal cerebral demyelinating disease named cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy. Although the exact mechanisms underlying brain damage in X-ALD are still poorly elucidated, it is known that hexacosanoic acid (C26:0) accumulation represents a hallmark in the pathogenesis of this disease. In this study, we examined whether an overload of C26:0 injected in Wistar rats was capable of causing behavioral changes in these animals. Methods: Egg lecithin in ethanol was dried under a nitrogen stream and mixed with C26:0 methyl ester. Male Wistar rats at 2–3 weeks of age were obtained from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), divided into 8 groups, and submitted to an open field test. We then analyzed line crossings (locomotion and exploration), rearing (orienting and investigatory responses), grooming (anxiety manifestation), and latency to move for each animal. Results: Animals subjected to C26:0 administration presented fewer crossings and rearing episodes and a higher latency to move 45 minutes after C26:0 injection. The present work yields experimental evidence that C26:0, the main accumulated metabolite in X-ALD, can cause behavioral alterations in rats such as the impairment of locomotion and exploratory capabilities, as well as a reduction in orienting and investigatory responses. Conclusion: Although our results are preliminary, they are extremely important for future studies that investigate C26:0 accumulation and locomotor impairment in patients with X-ALD.

This article reports on findings from a year-long research project conducted during the 2012-2013 school year in a PK-12 school district, located in the Mountain West region of the United States, utilizing the Photovoice method. The findings in the project point to the important critical counter-narratives Spanish-speaking immigrant parents present to the larger school community when given the opportunity to have their voices and perspectives heard and recorded in written form. The article provides teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff in schools and school districts with insight into the hopes and aspirations of Spanish-speaking immigrant parents and highlights educational practices that address issues of equity and access, as seen through the eyes of the participants in the study.

Diseases of the biliary tract are the most common feline hepatic disorders. Cholangitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the biliary tract in felines and can be associated with parasites. Affected animals must undergo clinical or surgical treatment, or a combination of both. In this paper we presented a 10-year-old male, mongrel feline with an obstruction of the biliary tract caused by a rare infection of Platynosomum fastosum.

Feeling emotionally safe and having a way to connect learning to life are conditions that boost achievement. The authors' immigrant English language-learning students have told them these emotional supports are crucial. Mountain Valley School District in Colorado, which has recently increased the number of its immigrant students, took these principles seriously in considering how best to teach immigrant learners. Partnering with a local university, the district implemented "photovoice"--a process that lets participants tell their own stories through photography and text. Roxas and Gabriel describe how students attended sessions in which they learned principles of photography, then took photos of images that depicted key elements of their lives and home cultures, added short text, and shaped their images into polished posters. All posters were exhibited in a central location; students presented their posters and talked about their home cultures to a gathered audience. The authors share lessons they learned through doing the project and note how much it helped second language-learning students feel welcomed and ready to learn.
