Mood disorders, also often referred to as affective disorders, are a group of psychiatric illnesses that severely impact mood and its related functions. The high medical expenditures have placed a significant financial burden on patients and their families. Aromatherapy is an alternative and complementary treatment that utilizes essential oils (EOs) or volatile oils (VOs) to achieve major therapeutic goals. In general, EOs are volatile chemicals that enter the body primarily through skin absorption and/or nasal inhalation. In addition, they can work through oral administration. Inhalation aromatherapy has shown unique advantages for treating mood disorders, especially depression, anxiety and mental disorders such as sleep disorder, which have been validated over the last decade through clinical and animal studies. Accumulating evidence has shown that EOs or VOs can bypass the blood-brain barrier to target brain tissue through the nasal-brain pathway. Subsequently, they act on the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and limbic system in the brain to improve symptoms of anxiety, depression and improve sleep quality. Here, we review the natural aromatic plants’ volatiles or essential oils used commonly as adjuncts to manage mood disorders and illustrate the mechanisms of inhalation aromatherapy, and mainly summarized the application of transnasal inhalation aromatherapy in depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. We conclude that aromatherapy does not cause side-effects, which is vastly different from commonly used psychotropic drugs. Inhalation aromatherapy via brain-targeted nasal delivery offers potentially efficacious treatment for mental disorders and merits further study.

Qinglong Zhidong Decoction (QLZDD), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription, has been effectively used to alleviate Tourette syndrome (TS) in children. However, the therapeutic mechanism of QLZDD on TS has not been evaluated. The present study aims to elucidate the therapeutic effect and the possible therapeutic mechanism of QLZDD on TS in mouse model. A 3,3-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN, 350 mg/kg)-induced-TS mouse model was established. The mice were randomly divided into the control group, the model group, the haloperidol group (14 mg/kg), the low-, middle-, or high-QLZDD-dose groups (6.83 g/kg, 13.65 g/kg, 27.3 g/kg). QLZDD was administrated orally once a day for 4 weeks. The tic-like behavior was recorded weekly. Then, neurotransmitters and neurotransmitter receptors were analyzed by ELISA, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and quantitative reverse transcription PCR in striatum. Further, the alteration to intestinal flora was monitored by 16s rRNA sequencing, and the role of gut microbiota in the alleviation of TS by QLZDD was investigated. QLZDD ameliorated the tic-like behavior, and decreased the level of excitatory neurotransmitters such as Glu and DA and increased the level of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA significantly. Moreover, QLZDD significantly blocked the mRNA expression and the protein expression of D1R and D2R in the striatum, while activated the levels of DAT and GABAR. Interestingly, QLZDD mediated the composition of gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of Lactobacillus and Bacteroides but decreasing the abundance of Alloprevotella and Akkermansia. Taken together, QLZDD ameliorated the tic-like behavior in TS mouse, its mechanism of action may be associated with restoring the balance of gut microbiota and neurotransmitters. The study indicated a promising role of QLZDD in alleviating TS and a therapeutic strategy for fighting TS in clinical settings.

Ferroptosis is one of the newly discovered forms of cell-regulated death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Extensive research has focused on the roles of ferroptosis in tumors, blood diseases, and neurological diseases. Some recent findings have indicated that ferroptosis may also be related to the occurrence and development of inflammatory arthritis. Ferroptosis may be a potential therapeutic target, and few studies in vitro and animal models have shown implications in the pathogenesis of inflammatory arthritis. This mini review discussed the common features between ferroptosis and the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and evaluated therapeutic applications of ferroptosis regulators in preclinical and clinical research. Some critical issues worth paying attention to were also raised to guide future research efforts.

The incidence rates of depression are increasing year by year. As one of the main clinical manifestations of depression, sleep disorder is often the first complication. This complication may increase the severity of depression and lead to poor prognosis in patients. In the past decades, there have been many methods used to evaluate sleep disorders, such as polysomnography and electroencephalogram, actigraphy, and videography. A large number of rodents and non-human primate models have reproduced the symptoms of depression, which also show sleep disorders. The purpose of this review is to examine and discuss the relationship between sleep disorders and depression. To this end, we evaluated the prevalence, clinical features, phenotypic analysis, and pathophysiological brain mechanisms of depression-related sleep disturbances. We also emphasized the current situation, significance, and insights from animal models of depression, which would provide a better understanding for the pathophysiological mechanisms between sleep disturbance and depression.

A facile and environmentally friendly route has been put forward for fabricating regenerated cellulose-based composite films (RC) with graphene oxide addition (GO). Nanocomposite films prepared through the solution blending method of cellulose solutions to a reversible ion solvent system of dimethyl sulfoxide, 1,8-diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene, carbon dioxide (DMSO/DBU/CO2) that contained a nano-additive of GO dispersion in DMSO. The results demonstrated that the addition of GO had a significant impact on the structural, mechanical, and gas barrier properties of the films. SEM and XRD results showed that GO was dispersed in cellulose solution uniformly. The evident red-shift of the characteristic functional groups in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra also indicated the interaction between GO and cellulose matrix. With 5 wt % GO, the oxygen permeability coefficient of corn cellulose films decreased from 1.59 × 10−12 cm3 cm cm−2 s−1 Pa−1 to 1.8 × 10−15 cm3 cm cm−2 s−1 Pa−1. Meanwhile, the thermal stability of corn cellulose film improved with the incorporation of GO.

Abstract This article concerns the Hamiltonian elliptic system: {−Δφ+V(x)φ=Gψ(x,φ,ψ)in RN,−Δψ+V(x)ψ=Gφ(x,φ,ψ)in RN,φ,ψ∈H1(RN). $$ \textstyle\begin{cases} -\Delta \varphi +V(x)\varphi =G_{\psi }(x,\varphi ,\psi ) & \mbox{in } \mathbb {R}^{N}, \\ -\Delta \psi +V(x)\psi =G_{\varphi }(x,\varphi ,\psi ) & \mbox{in } \mathbb {R}^{N}, \\ \varphi , \psi \in H^{1}(\mathbb {R}^{N}). \end{cases} $$ Assuming that the potential V is periodic and 0 lies in a spectral gap of σ(−Δ+V) $\sigma (-\Delta +V)$, least energy solution of the system is obtained for the super-quadratic case with a new technical condition, and the existence of ground state solutions of Nehari–Pankov type is established for the asymptotically quadratic case. The results obtained in the paper generalize and improve related ones in the literature.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder with deficient social skills, communication deficits and repetitive behaviors. The prevalence of ASD has increased among children in recent years. Children with ASD experience more sleep problems, and sleep appears to be essential for the survival and integrity of most living organisms, especially for typical synaptic development and brain plasticity. Many methods have been used to assess sleep problems over past decades such as sleep diaries and parent-reported questionnaires, electroencephalography, actigraphy and videosomnography. A substantial number of rodent and non-human primate models of ASD have been generated. Many of these animal models exhibited sleep disorders at an early age. The aim of this review is to examine and discuss sleep disorders in children with ASD. Toward this aim, we evaluated the prevalence, clinical characteristics, phenotypic analyses, and pathophysiological brain mechanisms of ASD. We highlight the current state of animal models for ASD and explore their implications and prospects for investigating sleep disorders associated with ASD.

Interferon-alpha (IFN-α) is a cytokine widely used in the treatment of brain cancers and virus infections with side effects including causing depression. Monoamine neurotransmitter systems have been found playing important roles in peripheral IFN-α-induced depression, but how peripheral IFN-α accesses the central nervous system and contributes to the development of depression is poorly known. This study aimed to develop a non-human primate model using long-term intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of IFN-α (5 days/week for 6 weeks), to observe the induced depressive-like behaviors and to explore the contributions of monoamine neurotransmitter systems in the development of depression. In monkeys receiving i.c.v. IFN-α administration, anhedonia was observed as decreases of sucrose consumption, along with depressive-like symptoms including increased huddling behavior, decreases of spontaneous and reactive locomotion in home cage, as well as reduced exploration and increased motionless in the open field. Chronic central IFN-α infusion significantly increased the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of noradrenaline (NA), and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), but not 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA). These CSF monoamine metabolites showed associations with some specific depression-related behaviors. In conclusion, central IFN-α administration induced anhedonia and depression-related behaviors comparable to the results with peripheral administration, and the development of depression was associated with the dysfunction of monoamine neurotransmitters.

Abstract Background The rapid increase in carbon black poses threats to human health. We evaluated the effect of CB (Printex 90) on the osteogenesis of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Mitochondria play an important role in the osteogenesis of MSCs and are potential targets of nanomaterials, so we studied the role of mitochondria in the CB Printex 90-induced effects on osteogenesis. Results Low doses of Printex 90 (3 ng/mL and 30 ng/mL) that did not cause deleterious effects on MSCs’ viability significantly inhibited osteogenesis of MSCs. Printex 90 caused down-regulation of osteoblastic markers, reduced activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and poor mineralization of osteogenically induced MSCs. Cellular ATP production was decreased, mitochondrial respiration was impaired with reduced expression of ATPase, and the mitochondrial membrane was depolarized. The quantity and quality of mitochondria are tightly controlled by mitochondrial biogenesis, mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. The transcriptional co-activator and transcription factors for mitochondrial biogenesis, PGC-1α, Nrf1 and TFAM, were suppressed by Printex 90 treatment, suggesting that decreased biogenesis was caused by Printex 90 treatment during osteogenesis. Mitochondrial fusion and fission were significantly inhibited by Printex 90 treatment. PINK1 accumulated in Printex 90-treated cells, and more Parkin was recruited to mitochondria, indicating that mitophagy increased to remove the damaged mitochondria. Conclusions This is the first report of the inhibitory effects of CB on the osteogenesis of MSCs and the involvement of mitochondria in CB Printex 90-induced suppression of MSC osteogenesis.

This paper is concerned with existence of ground and bound states for a class of nonlinear Schrodinger equation with periodic potential. We impose general assumptions on the nonlinearity with super or asymptotically linear growth, and find some refinements of known results and new results by using the perturbation method and a mountain pass argument. In particular, a critical point theory is established for the asymptotically linear growth case.

It has long been observed in humans that the occurrence of depressive symptoms is often accompanied by the dysfunction of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The rodent experiments also showed that chronic corticosterone exposure could induce depression-like phenotype. However, rodents are phylogenetically distant from humans. In contrast, non-human primates bear stronger similarities with humans, suggesting research on primates would provide an important complement. For the first time, we investigated the effects of chronic glucocorticoid exposure on rhesus macaques. Seven male macaques were selected and randomized to glucocorticoid or vehicle groups, which were subjected to either prednisolone acetate or saline injections, respectively. The depression-like behaviors were assessed weekly, and the body weights, HPA axis reactivity, sucrose solution consumption and monoaminergic neurotransmitters were further compared between these two groups. The glucocorticoid group was not found to display more depression-like behaviors than the vehicle group until 7 weeks after treatment. Chronic glucocorticoid exposure significantly decreased the levels of cortisol determined from blood (a biomarker for acute HPA axis reactivity) but increased the hair cortisol concentrations (a reliable indicator of chronic HPA axis reactivity) compared with controls. The glucocorticoid group was also found to consume less sucrose solution than controls, a good manifestation of anhedonia. This could be possibly explained by lower dopamine (DA) levels in cerebrospinal fluid induced by chronic glucocorticoid treatment. The results presented here indicate that chronic glucocorticoid exposure could disturb both the acute and chronic HPA axis reactivity, which eventually disturbed the neurotransmitter system and led monkeys to display depression-like phenotype.

Pingdingshan mining area is one of the typical deep mining areas in China, and most of the mines in this area are troubled by the difficulties of the deep-soft-rock roadway support. Based on the concept of synergistic interactions of the interior and exterior bearing structure of the surrounding rock and, considering the specific geological conditions of the research site, we establish the mechanical model of the interior and exterior bearing structure of the roadway. Based on numerical simulation, we reveal the influence of main factors, such as support strength and mechanical characteristics, of surrounding rock on the distribution and evolution of the interior and exterior bearing structure. We found that increasing the support strength and mechanical parameters of surrounding rock can make the exterior bearing structure close to the roadway enhance the bearing characteristics of the interior and exterior bearing structure and improve the roadway stability. The distribution characteristics of the interior and exterior bearing structure of the roadway under six different support strengths and six different grouting parameters were systematically investigated by field measurements. According to the field test results, an effective strategy for controlling the deep-soft-rock roadway is proposed, which provides a good reference for surrounding rock control of the deep-soft-rock roadway in the Pingdingshan mining area and mines with similar mining conditions.

We use a new technique to show that the above system has a nontrivial solution under concise super-quadratic conditions. These conditions show that the existence of a nontrivial solution depends mainly on the behavior of W(x,u,v) as $|u+v| \to 0$ and $|au+bv| \to \infty$ for some positive constants a,b.

The efficient and safe extraction of ultra-thick coal seam in the Xinjiang East Junggar Basin has been a major focus in the future of mining in China. This paper systematically studied the overburden strata fracturing process and the structure evolution characteristics based on a typical ultra-thick coal seam condition in Xinjiang, using both physical and numerical modeling studies. The interactions between shields and the roof strata were also examined, from the perspective of ground support. The results indicated that roof structure was mainly in the form of voussoir beam at the early mining stage, where overburden stability was affected by the rock mass properties and mining parameters. The support load mainly included top coal and immediate roof gravity load and the load caused by main roof rotary consolidation. As a result of mining disturbance and strata movement, the overlying strata re-fractured in the later mining stage. The roof structure changed from beam to arch gradually and propagates upwards with the increase of multi-layer mining times. The support load was mainly the gravity load of the friable rock mass within compression arch. The results will provide a guideline for the improvement of roof stability under similar mining conditions in Xinjiang.

In this article, we study the multiplicity of solutions for the semilinear elliptic equation $$\displaylines{ -\Delta u+a(x)u=f(x, u), \quad x\in \Omega,\cr u=0, \quad x \in \partial\Omega, }$$ where $ \Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ $(N\geq3)$, the potential a(x) satisfies suitable integrability conditions, and the primitive of the nonlinearity f is of super-quadratic growth near infinity and is allowed to change sign. Our super-quadratic conditions are weaker the usual super-quadratic conditions.

In this study, a novel adamantanamine-paclitaxel (AD-PTX) incorporated oligochitosan- carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CSO-g-CM-β-CD) self-assembly macromolecular (CSO-g-CM-β-CD@AD-PTX) micelle was successfully prepared in water through sonication. The formed molecules were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, two-dimensional NMR, elemental analysis, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, while the correspondent micelles were characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. We showed that the macromolecular micelle contained a spherical core-shell structure with a diameter of 197.1 ± 3.3 nm and zeta potential of -19.1 ± 4.3 mV. The CSO-g-CM-β-CD@AD-PTX micelle exhibited a high drug-loading efficacy up to 31.3%, as well as a critical micelle concentration of 3.4 × 10-7 M, which indicated good stability. Additionally, the in vitro release profile of the CSO-g-CM-β-CD@AD-PTX micelle demonstrated a long-term release pattern, 63.1% of AD-PTX was released from the micelle during a 30-day period. Moreover, the CSO-g-CM-β-CD@AD-PTX micelle displayed cytotoxicity at a sub-μM scale similar to PTX in U87 MG cells, and CSO-g-CM-β-CD exhibited a good safety profile by not manifesting significant toxicity at concentrations up to 100 μM. These results indicated that β-CD-based inclusion complexation resulting in biodegradable self-assembled macromolecular micelles can be utilized as nanocarrier, and may provide a promising platform for drug delivery in the future medical applications.

Superhigh-water content material (SCM) has been widely utilized for goaf backfilling, grouting, and fire prevention and extinguishing. In this paper, the engineering mechanical characteristics of superhigh-water content material concretion (SCMC) were studied for two types of backfilling technologies in longwall mining—open-type and pocket-type backfilling. The mechanical properties and responses of the SCMC were assessed under different cementation states, varying loading conditions and at different scales. The results indicate that: (1) the compressive and tensile strengths of SCMC specimens in different cementation states increase as the curing time increases—the SCMC formed by a mixture of SCM and gangues has higher strength than that of pure SCM; (2) the SCMC is under different loading and confinement conditions when different backfilling technologies is applied; however the strength of SCMC increases with curing time and decreases with water volume percentage; and (3) large-size specimens of pure SCMC enter into an accelerated creep state at a leveled load of 1.4 MPa. The effects of SCM backfilling on subsidence control has been verified by field applications. The results presented in this paper can provide data support for the optimization of backfill mining technology using SCM, as well as for the design of hydraulic supports parameters at longwall faces.

This study systematically investigates the overburden movement and strata behavior at a fully-mechanized top coal caving (FMTCC) face in a thick coal seam in a loess-covered gullied region by field measurement and theoretical analysis. A comparative analysis was performed to examine how the attitude of surface gullies and the structure of overburden affect face support resistance. The characteristics and evolution mechanism of strata behavior during FMTCC under gully slopes in a loess-covered gullied region were discovered through a mechanical analysis of the roof structure and a comparison to the mining of a typical shallow seam under gully slopes. The study found that as the FMTCC face advanced, the strata behavior initiated in the middle part of the face and then continued to both ends, and its intensity was higher in the middle part than in the upper and lower parts. During mining under gullies, the increases in support resistance were generally less than 5% (except for the maximum increases of 7–9%), indicating that the occurrence of gullies on the surface had little influence on the strata behavior at the FMTCC face. Due to the increased burial depth and the number of key strata, the roof at the FMTCC face under gullies formed a stable load-bearing structure called a voussoir beam, which was the key difference from the strata behavior characteristics in the shallow mine under gullies.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by an infection progressing to sepsis-associated organ failure (such as lung injury). Our previous review revealed that Astragaloside IV (ASI-IV), one of the primary bioactive ingredients in Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bge (Huang-Qi), had been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether ASI-IV could attenuate septic lung injury via activating regulatory T-cells (Tregs). This study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of ASI-IV on sepsisinduced lung injury and to further explore its underlying mechanism. In the murine models of cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced sepsis, ASI-IV can markedly improve the survival rate and reduce inflammatory lung injury, protect mice against exacerbated inflammatory responses by decreasing myeloid cell infiltration and down-regulating IL-6 and TNF-α in lung tissue. Meanwhile, Treg cell-related gene expression, including Foxp3 and IL-10, significantly increased after ASI-IV treatment. Furthermore, ASI-IV notably promoted the differentiation of naïve CD4+ T cells into T regulatory cells without obviously affecting Th1 and Th17 differentiation. Our results indicated that ASI-IV could attenuate septic lung injury by promoting Treg cell expansion and inhibiting inflammatory responses.
