Verbal Irony in the Czech Discourse and its Perception Mgr. Dominika Rýparová Abstract This thesis sets the verbal irony into a broader context of human communication and supports the tendency to understand the irony as a communication strategy - not only as a speech figure or a tool to make our way of speaking more attractive. The aim of this work is to remind that irony is an integral part of our everyday communication, and a prerequisite for its use and understanding is built on the particular language experience. The experiment was examining the function of the four forms of irony, which differed in the degree of engaged humour or, conversely, expressed criticism. During the research one was able to get answers from a total of 3,167 respondents. Their analysis revealed that the major motivation for use of the selected types of irony is the humour, but the more humorous the statement is, the more the speaker takes a risk of not being completely understood, because he/she plays with reality too much. Further the results showed that the perception of irony-related emotions is influenced by our age. Younger people are more sensitive to the humorous points of irony, while the older are more tolerant of its critical part. The evaluation of irony is also affected by the communication role of the respondent...

v anglickém jazyce The diploma thesis Syntax of the Czech Translation of J. R. R. Tolkien's Work is based on a comparative linguistic study concentrated on the Czech and English nonfinite verb forms and the possibilities of their usage. The thesis is founded on the analysis of selected grammatical features in John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's Silmarillion and The Hobbit, and their translations by Stanislava Pošustová and František Vrba. The examples of non-finite verb forms working as different sentence elements are preceded by a short theoretical introduction which is supposed to provide a background for the comparison of their usage. Similar examples are organized and analysed together. Within a single chapter the samples were sequenced according to the frequency in usage of the type of their translation. Apart from comparing the original with its translation it is also possible to see the differences between concrete realisations of one grammatical feature in English, and to take into account the differences between the work of the two translators. The Diploma Thesis called Linguistic Characteristics of Current Production of Cookbooks consists of a theoretical knowledge and a practical analysis. The former deals with basic definitions and brief evolution of the history of Czech cookbooks which introduces the most important authors and publications. Furthermore, this part overviews individual parts of recipes and their diachronic changes. The end of the theoretical section is dedicated to important figures of speech described by the individual linguistic structures (stylistics, syntax, lexicology, morphology). The latter comprises the compilation of two cookbooks published after 1989 - Domácí kuchařka (translation: House Cookbook) and Deník Dity P. (Dita P.'s Diary). The works have been thoroughly chosen to point out the differences in both linguistic and non-linguistic structures. The Thesis tries to prove that, even though cook recipes have very pronounced features that distinguish them from other literary genres, they can also differ significantly from each other. This section includes illustrative pictures for further concretization.

of thesis children's knowledges of words accociated with Christmas The thesis is concerned with Christmas traditions, particularly from the point of view of children. The thesis presents the evolution of Christmas celebrations, some of the traditions, and it also compares certain Christmas songs and carols, and thus demonstrates the evolution of Christmas related vocabulary. Furthermore, the thesis also presents a brief overview of the evolution of children's vocabulary. In the practical part, the thesis attempts to answer the question of which Christmas related words children aged 9 - 12 years are familiar with. For the purpose of this practical research, the author of the thesis created a questionnaire containing 10 specific Christmas related words that children were asked to explain. The research results show that children seem to have a relatively good passive knowledge of commonly used words associated with Christmas, but in many cases they find it difficult to actively demonstrate this knowledge, i.e. to define, explain those words. In general, the girls describe the meaning of words better than boys. Children attending religious schools have apparently greater knowledge of words associated with religious meaning of Christmas than children from state schools. Comparison of age do not show...

My bachelor thesis deals with Intertextuality in the genre of newspaper commentary. The theoretical part describes the concept of Intertextuality in various Czech language guides and its interpretation. Further I clarify the genre of analytical style of journalism - the commentary - its basic features and distinctive position in journalistic style. Material for the practical part I excerpted from the daily press in its electronic form, in the period from August 2012 to March 2014. Specifically, I focused on the daily Mladá fronta Dnes and Lidové noviny. An analysis of the material revealed that the authors of very frequent use of intertextuality apply their general knowledge, give this genre a strong distinctive character, expressing a subjective evaluation and gaining the attention of the recipient. Intertextual links in comments across all topics usually appear already in the headline of comments. The most common forms are allusions, quotations or paraphrases. The thesis' topics are a reliefisation (literally rising from) and a parenthesis in contemporary written published Czech. Both of these lingusitic phenomena represent the instruments of the text hierarchisation, that means a magnitude of importance, so that an author may present selected informations in the way of emphasization, notification, or, conversely, as less significant completion, addition of the main message. By collected readings analysis, the thesis' purpose is to plot the incidences of reliefisation and parentesis in current published texts; the syntactic aspect comprises the clasification of individual varieties of presented phenomena, and the identification of the motives of their utilization. The theoretical section yields the synthesis of findings about that phenomena, and, in the case of parenthesis, it also brings intrinsic criteria for the definitions of terms - necessary approach due to interpersonal differencies in linguists' conceptions of the topics. The practical section provides detailed classification of syntactic text-included (reliefisied) and text-excluded (parenthetic) phrases. Keywords: reliefisation, parenthesis, journalistic style

In the center of interest of this dissertation called The Pragmalinguistic analysis of Czech and French commentary lies in the qualitative methodological approach to a specific media communication form - a printed commentary. The dissertation has several objectives: firstly, it describes the methodological tools used in the francophone analysis of discourse which are consequently used to construct the author's own system as a basis for the analysis. The author has chosen the tools which create language subjectivity and manifestation of the author in the text which are in francophone areas traditionally called as a complex of "énonciation": discourse/history (É. Benveniste), "théorie des blocs sémantiques", polyphony and intertextuality, metaphors, modalisators, deictics, connectors. In the second part of the dissertation, the author uses the theoretical basis built in the first part and applies it to create her own analysis, comparison and final evaluation of two journalistic texts - one from Le Monde and the other one from Hospodářské noviny. The detailed analysis of the texts brings very interesting findings about the different character and construction of the Czech and French commentaries and at the same time, about the different coverage of Czech and French presidency of the Council of the European...

This diploma thesis deals with comprehension of newly borrowed anglicisms into the Czech language. As newly borrowed we considered those which are listed in the dictionaries of neologisms, or have not been included in them yet. The comprehension was tested at primary school pupils and students of lower secondary school. The theoretical part describes ways of enriching vocabulary, especially borrowing from foreign languages. The main research method used in the practical part was a survey. It took place in April 2014 among the pupils of the 6th and 9th classes at one of Prague's primary schools and in corresponding classes at Opava secondary school. The results were related to the sex and age of the respondents and also to the type of school they are attending. We observed increased number of successful responses in closed questions testing the passive comprehension of anglicisms than in the open-ended questions testing the active comprehension of anglicisms. Comparing responses by gender, girls reached higher percentage of successful answers or the successful answers of boys and girls were balanced. The most striking differences brought comparison of respondents by age. Older pupils reached on all issues significantly higher success rate than younger pupils. Résumé This thesis under the title Linguistic Representation of National Stereotypes in Czech Media and the Application of Cognitive Aspects in Teaching Czech deals with which national stereotypes (about Romani, Vietnamese and Russians) are present in the samples selected from Czech media and how these stereotypes are linguistically represented. The paper is based on the presumption that despite the principle of political correctness present in most of the journalists' code of ethics, it is not possible to avoid some manifestations of shared fixed images of nationalities (called stereotypes) in media. Furthermore, we argue that the media image of the world is based on the Linguistic Image of the World. The theoretical basis of the cognitive linguistics, especially the Prototype/Stereotype Theory and categorization as the way of understanding and assorting the world, were the main methodological sources. There is a chapter on each analysed national group that depicts the means of its categorization and lists the particular categories that ensued from the analysis, as well as the stereotypes that were discovered in the surveyed sample. This thesis also deals with the application of aspects of cognitive linguistics in Czech language lessons (not only), as well as the possibilities of working with national...

Communication is everyday basic interaction among people, which consists of two components, verbal and nonverbal. A prerequisite for successful communication is politeness, which is discussed in this thesis. This thesis focuses more-in-depth on one act of communication, greetings. Attention is paid on greetings in Czech and German language. The work is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part deals with the pragmatics and communication. It defines the concepts of politeness (brief part is dedicated to its history, its functions and linguistic access to it), discourtesy and greeting. The practical part is focused on the questionnaires that have been used for data collection. Answers to questions are tabulated in percentage terms and in comparative text processing, which was the aim of my thesis. The result of the research is the conclusion that both languages express politeness in a very similar way. German greetings are more diverse and less formal thanks to the influence and acceptance of English words.

Advertising texts use elements of journalistic, technical, administrative and artistic styles. Persuasive and attracting functions are dominant for them. These are of the verbal means represented primarily by imperatives, adjectives and adverbs in comparatives and superlatives, by a higher frequency of personal, possessive and totalizing pronouns. Lexically the functions of texts are supported primarily by vocabulary with positive expressivity and terminology of respective field. Enumerations, rhetorical questions, higher splitting of text and placing of persuading means into the rheme of the message are syntactically relevant. These features are also supported by repetition and combination of these means. Of the nonverbal means composition of individual elements within the advertising area, particularly the location of the product and company name, logo, slogan, ratio and layout of text and visual elements, play an important role. Above specified means and combinations thereof can be understood as a strategy of advertising message. Cognitive or affective strategies supported by an appeal to...

The bachelor thesis deals with a lingvistic picture of the world of the particular somatisms, namely the components of the digestive system (stomach, bile, gall bladder, heartburn, intestine). The theoretical part covers the term cognition, cognitive science and, logically, cognitive linguistics. Furthermore, it includes the indispensable and key topics which have to be taken into account to understand the concept of the linguistic picture of the world, i.e. conceptualization, categorization, metaphor, anthropocentrism etc. The practical part is interested in the real occurence of the somatisms in various language contexts. In particular, their occurence in collocations, phraseology and idiomatic expressions. The analysis is based on the profile theory and its image schema. The lingustic backround is supplemented with the psychosomatic knowledge because it appears to be a helpful science branch while completing and considering the possible connection between the occurence of somatism in the language of the specific culture and extralinguistic reality.

The diploma thesis explores the four seasons from the view point of the linguistic picture of the world theory. The etholinguistic approach is applied in the thesis - attention is paid to the Czech-specific perception of reality especially focused on the weather and the changes of the nature in the course of the four seasons. Human perception of the change is based upon the senses - the sense of hearing, the sense of smell, and touch and the eyesight. Each season is unique. The seasons can be differentiated by their season specific stereotypes, season prototypes, and connotations. On the linguistic pictures of each season collocations are built, from which new lexical items originate, describing the season as such. Due to anthropocentrism we perceive individual astronomical and meteorological issues as personified items to which we ascribe human behaviour and human qualities. The motto of the thesis says: "I will not do the spring sowing next year. " The motto denotes the interaction of two conceptual schemata (the scheme of a cycle and the scheme of a journey) realizing the fact that the natural cycle corresponds in our mental representation with the phases of human life. The difference between the concepts is that man always reaches the terminal point of his journey unlike the nature constantly...

The subject of this thesis is the in time variability of sport slang, namely from the environment of volleyball. In Západočeská vlastivěda devoted to language from 1992 I found a study by Marie Terčová focused on sport slang. Slang of sport shooting and volleyball are compared there. The study also includes a dictionary of volleyball slang from 1987 comprising about 444 entries. I decided to compare the vocabulary of 1987 and contemporary. It was necessary to gather the expressions used by contemporary speakers to contemporary dictionary and then compare the two of them. The initial hypotheses were a higher number of expressions in the older dictionary and also higher number of synonymy expressions, changes in the meanings of many of words. Next hypotheses were a higher concentration of borrowed words in the contemporary dictionary and the majority of transpositional mechanisms in the creation of expressions. The last hypothesis was, that the meaning of the expressions occurring in the older dictionary only, are unknown to contemporary speakers. The former four were discussed by the comparison, the last one by a questionnaire.
