51. Methods for estimating peak physiological performance and correlating performance measures

Abstract: Estimates of animal performance often use the maximum of a small num- ber of laboratory trials, a method which has several statistical disadvantages. Sample maxima always underestimate the true maximum performance, and the degree of the bias depends on sample size. Here, we suggest an alternative approach that involves estimating a specific performance quantile (e.g., the 0.90 quantile). We use the infor- mationonwithin-individualvariationinperformancetoobtainasamplingdistribution for the residual performance measures; we use this distribution to estimate a desired performancequantileforeachindividual.Weillustrateourapproachusingsimulations and with data on sprint speed in lizards. The quantile method has several advantages overthesamplemaximum:itreducesoreliminatesbias,itusesallofthedatafromeach individual, and its accuracy is independent of sample size. Additionally, we address the estimation of correlations between two different performance measures, such as sample maxima, quantiles, or means. In particular, because of sampling variability, we propose that the correlation of sample means does a better job estimating the cor- relation of population maxima than the estimator which is the correlation of sample maxima.

52. LATITUDINAL AND CLIMATIC VARIATION IN BODY SIZE AND DORSAL SCALE COUNTS IN SCELOPORUS LIZARDS:A PHYLOGENETIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract: Squamates often follow an inverse Bergmann's rule, with larger-bodied animals occurring in warmer areas or at lower latitudes. The size of dorsal scales in lizards has also been proposed to vary along climatic gradients, with species in warmer areas exhibiting larger scales, putatively to reduce heat load. We tested for these patterns in the diverse and widespread lizard genus Sceloporus. Among 106 species or populations, body size was associated positively with maximum temperature (consistent with the inverse of Bergmann's rule) and aridity, but did not covary with latitude. Scale size (inferred from the inverse relation with numbers of scales) was positively related to body size. Controlling for body size via multiple regression, scale size was associated negatively with latitude (best predictor), positively with minimum temperature, and negatively with aridity (similar results were obtained using scores from a principal components analysis of latitude and climatic indicators). Thus, lizards with larger scales are not necessarily found in areas with higher temperatures. Univariate analyses indicated phylogenetic signal for body size, scale counts, latitude, and all climate indicators. In all cases, phylogenetic regression models fit the data significantly better than nonphylogenetic models; thus, residuals for log(10) number of dorsal scale rows exhibited phylogenetic signal.

In this paper we describe the major, courses, and faculty and student research and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities we have experienced.

Abstract: 3 Local genetic adaptation and phenotypic plasticity are two mechanisms that can have marked effects on the morphology, performance, and behaviour of animals, producing geographic variation among populations. However, few studies have examined how these mechanisms interact during ontogeny to shape organismal phenotypes. We incubated eggs of the western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis, from four populations (representing two latitudes and altitudes) in either a warm or cool environment in the laboratory. We then raised the hatchlings under common laboratory conditions, measured morphological and performance traits until 5 weeks of age, and compared juvenile morphology with that of field-caught adults from each population. The results obtained indicate that some phenotypic traits that contribute to performance (body size, hindlimb length, head shape) were relatively canalized in juveniles and differed among populations in a way that was consistent with adults from their population of origin. However, other traits (forelimb length, inter-limb length, mass, tail length), showed significant effects of incubation temperature, and this environmentally induced variation persisted throughout the experi- ment. Although selection pressure may be stronger for traits that are integral to survival, developmental effects might still have a lasting impact on traits less important to organismal fitness. Abstract: 1. The lizard genus Plestiodon (Scincidae; formerly Eumeces ) is widespread in North America and Asia, but the thermal biology of only a few species has been studied. 2. We measured several thermal physiological traits in Plestiodon gilberti , among the few measurements of temperature sensitivity in a North American scincid lizard. 3. Critical thermal minimum (7.7 °C) and maximum (42.3 °C), preferred body temperature (31.5 °C), and optimal temperature for sprinting (34.1 °C) were very similar to published values for several Asian species of Plestiodon . 4. These results suggest that thermal physiology in Plestiodon lizards may be evolutionarily conserved over large temporal and spatial scales.

Abstract: This article provides a summary of the ideas discussed at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology society-wide symposium on Leading Students and Faculty to Quantitative Biology through Active Learning. It also includes a brief review of the recent advancements in incorporating active learning approaches into quantitative biology classrooms. We begin with an overview of recent literature that shows that active learning can improve students' outcomes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education disciplines. We then discuss how this approach can be particularly useful when teaching topics in quantitative biology. Next, we describe some of the recent initiatives to develop hands-on activities in quantitative biology at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels. Throughout the article we provide resources for educators who wish to integrate active learning and technology into their classrooms.

Abstract: Large samples of \Lambda, \Sigma(1385) and \Xi(1321) hyperons produced in deep-inelastic muon scattering off a ^6LiD target were collected with the COMPASS experimental setup at CERN. The relative yields of \Sigma(1385)^+, \Sigma(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^+, \Xi(1321)^-, and \bar{\Xi}(1321)^+ hyperons decaying into \Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})\pi were measured. The heavy hyperon to \Lambda and heavy antihyperon to \bar{\Lambda} yield ratios were found to be in the range 3.8% to 5.6% with a relative uncertainty of about 10%. Abstract: We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Δg/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q2>1 (GeV/c)2 including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised View the MathML source target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction xg covering the range 0.04

Abstract: The main characteristics of the COMPASS experimental setup for physics with hadron beams are described. This setup was designed to perform exclusive measurements of processes with several charged and/or neutral particles in the final state. Making use of a large part of the apparatus that was previously built for spin structure studies with a muon beam, it also features a new target system as well as new or upgraded detectors. The hadron setup is able to operate at the high incident hadron flux available at CERN. It is characterised by large angular and momentum coverages, large and nearly flat acceptances, and good two and three-particle mass resolutions. In 2008 and 2009 it was successfully used with positive and negative hadron beams and with liquid hydrogen and solid nuclear targets. This article describes the new and upgraded detectors and auxiliary equipment, outlines the reconstruction procedures used, and summarises the general performance of the setup., Comment: 91 pages, 101 figures and 7 tables

Abstract: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is caused by the replication of JC virus in oligodendrocytes of immunocompromised patients. Diagnosis usually relies on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based demonstration of JC virus DNA in the cerebrospinal fluid. As previous reports have suggested that some patients may benefit from antiviral therapy, non-invasive early diagnosis is highly desirable. Repetitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations (two to nine) were obtained in seven patients (aged 40-67 years, six males, one female) with classical clinical and imaging findings of PML. Five patients had underlying hematological disorders and two acquired immune deficiency syndrome. PCR of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimen was positive for JC virus DNA in six patients. MRI sequences included T2-, T1- and diffusion-weighted (DW) images in all patients and diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) in four cases. DTI was once performed at 3T, in the remaining patients at 1.5T. All patients received antiviral treatment with cidofovir in addition to the treatment of the underlying disorder. MRI showed areas of T2 hyperintensity with involvement of the subcortical U-fibers and restricted diffusion in all patients. Areas of diffusion abnormality correlated with disease progress. Contrast enhancement was encountered once after successful treatment and heralded clinical remission with virus elimination from the CSF. Hence, MRI including DW and contrast-enhanced images may be used to evaluate disease activity. Contrast enhancement may indicate an inflammatory response and thus herald immunologic virus elimination.

Abstract: The gluon polarisation in the nucleon was measured using open charm production by scattering 160 GeV/c polarised muons off longitudinally polarised protons or deuterons. The data were taken by the COMPASS collaboration between 2002 and 2007. A detailed account is given of the analysis method that includes the application of neural networks. Several decay channels of D^0 mesons are investigated. Longitudinal spin asymmetries of the D meson production cross-sections are extracted in bins of D^0 transverse momentum and energy. At leading order QCD accuracy the average gluon polarisation is determined as (Delta g/G)^LO=-0.06 +/- 0.21 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) at the scale ~13 (GeV/c)^2 and an average gluon momentum fraction ~ 0.11. For the first time, the average gluon polarisation is also obtained at next-to-leading order QCD accuracy as (Delta g/G)^NLO = -0.13 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +/- 0.15 (syst.) at the scale ~ 13 (\GeV/c)^2 and ~ 0.20., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures and 13 tables

Abstract: The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV positive muon beam and a transversely polarised NH_3 target. The Sivers asymmetry of the proton has been extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003 0.03. The asymmetry is different from zero and positive also in the low x region, where sea-quarks dominate. The kinematic dependence of the asymmetry has also been investigated and results are given for various intervals of hadron and virtual photon fractional energy. In contrast to the case of the Collins asymmetry, the results on the Sivers asymmetry suggest a strong dependence on the four-momentum transfer to the nucleon, in agreement with the most recent calculations., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The production of D* and D mesons in inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off a ^6LiD target has been investigated with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN for 0.003 (GeV/c)^2 < Q^2 < 10 (GeV/c)^2 and 3x10^-5< x_Bj < 0.1. The study is based on 8100 events where a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected subsequently to a D*+ or D*- decay, and on 34000 events, where only a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected. Kinematic distributions of D*, D and K*_2 are given as a function of their energy E, transverse momentum p_T, energy fraction z, and of the virtual photon variables nu, Q^2 and x_Bj. Semi-inclusive differential D* production cross-sections are compared with theoretical predictions for D* production via photon-gluon fusion into open charm. The total observed production cross-section for D*+/- mesons with laboratory energies between 22 and 86 GeV is 1.9 nb. Significant cross-section asymmetries are observed between D*+ and D*- production for nu0.6., 22 pages, 12 figures and 2 tables

68. Autonomous rover for polar science support and remote sensing

Abstract: This paper reports outcomes of recent field deployments of the solar-powered Cool Robot, which was developed as an autonomous platform for towing or carrying scientific instruments in Greenland and Antarctica. This simple 70-kg four-wheel drive, solar-electric vehicle executes autonomous surveys via GPS waypoint following, while towing or carrying payloads of over 40 kg. Cool Robot conducted over 175 km of autonomous surveys to study atmospheric chemistry at the snow-air interface in the vicinity of Summit camp. The robot also conducted local grid surveys of the Summit ice layer in order to evaluate the potential of using ground penetrating radar to estimate the density of melt channels in the ice layer. Our key objectives were to demonstrate the operational value of a rover to locate subsurface features and the use of autonomous rovers in collecting scientific data from long-duration surveys. The Cool Robot operated reliably at -30 C, and demonstrated good oversnow mobility and adequate GPS accuracy for waypoint-following on a 5-10 meter grid. The deployment results demonstrate that autonomous vehicles have great potential to improve the efficiency of polar science.

Abstract: Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS muon beam at $160$ GeV/c and a $^6$LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations $\cos\phi_h$, $\cos2\phi_h$ and $\sin\phi_h$ were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables $x$, $z$ or $p_T^{\,h}$ and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the $\cos \phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons., Comment: 33 pages, 15 figures and 10 pages

Abstract: Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons $\omega$ and $\phi$ is measured with a 190 GeV$/c$ proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable $x_{F}$ of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on $x_{F}$ and on the invariant mass $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ of the system formed by fast proton $p_\mathrm{fast}$ and vector meson $V$ is discussed in terms of diffractive production of $p_\mathrm{fast}V$ resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element $\rho_{00}$ of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on $x_{F}$ and on $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to $\omega$ production which are absent in the case of the $\phi$ meson. Removing the low-mass $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of $x_\mathrm{F}$., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures and 5 tables

Abstract: The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the reaction $\pi^- \gamma \rightarrow \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+$ embedded in the Primakoff reaction of $190~\textrm{GeV}$ pions scattering in the Coulomb field of a lead target, $\pi^- \text{Pb} \rightarrow \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ \text{Pb}$. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at momentum transfer below $0.001~(\text{GeV}/c)^2$. Using a partial-wave analysis the amplitudes and relative phases of the $a_2(1320)$ and $\pi_2(1670)$ mesons have been extracted, and the Coulomb and the diffractive contributions have been disentangled. Measuring absolute production cross sections we have determined the radiative width of the $a_2(1320)$ to be $\Gamma_0(a_2(1320) \rightarrow \pi\gamma) = (358 \pm 6_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 42_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV}$. As the first measurement, $\Gamma_0(\pi_2(1670) \rightarrow \pi\gamma) = (181 \pm 11_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 27_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV} \cdot (\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 \pi}/\textrm{BR}_{f_2 \pi})$ is obtained for the radiative width of the $\pi_2(1670)$, where in this analysis the branching ratio $\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 \pi}=0.56$ has been used. Abstract: The majority of elevated O(2) consumption associated with short and vigorous activity occurs during recovery, thus an assessment of associated metabolic costs should also examine the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). This study examined O(2) uptake during exercise, EPOC and distance traveled during 5-, 15-, 60- and 300-s sprints at maximal treadmill intensity in Dipsosaurus (N=10; 74.3+/-2.1 g). EPOC (0.08, 0.14, 0.23 and 0.18 ml O(2) g(-1), respectively) was large (80-99% of total elevated O(2) consumption) and increased significantly between 5 and 60 s. The cost of activity (C(act); ml O(2) g(-1) x km(-1)), intended to reflect the total net costs associated with the activity, was calculated as the total elevated O(2) consumption per unit distance traveled. C(act) decreased with activity duration due to proportionally larger increases in distance traveled relative to EPOC volume, and is predicted by the equation C(act)=14.7 x activity duration (s)(-0.24). The inclusion of EPOC costs provides an ecologically relevant estimate of the total metabolic cost of locomotor activity. C(act) exceeds standard transport costs at all durations examined due to the addition of obligate recovery costs. The differences are large enough to impact energy budget analyses for ectotherms.

Abstract: The cross section for production of charged hadrons with high transversemomenta in scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off nucleons at low photonvirtualities has been measured at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The results,which cover transverse momenta from 1.1 to 3.6 GeV/c, are compared to anext-to-leading order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (NLO pQCD)calculation in order to evaluate the applicability of pQCD to this process inthe kinematic domain of the experiment. The shape of the calculateddifferential cross section as a function of transverse momentum is found to bein good agreement with the experimental data, but the normalization isunderestimated by NLO pQCD. This discrepancy may point towards the relevance ofterms beyond NLO in the pQCD framework. The dependence of the cross section onthe pseudo-rapidity and on the charge of the hadrons is also discussed.

74. The physical basis for gas transport through polar firn: a case study at Summit, Greenland

Abstract: Compared to other natural porous materials, relatively little is known about the physical nature of polar firn. This intricate network of ice and pore space that comprises the top 60–100 m of the polar ice sheets is the framework that forms the natural archive of past climate information. Despite the many implications for ice core interpretation, direct measurements of physical properties throughout the firn column are limited. Models of gas transport through firn are used to interpret in-situ chemical data which is retrieved to analyze past atmospheric composition. These traditional models treat the firn as a "black box," with gas transport parameters tuned to match gas concentrations with depth to known atmospheric histories. Though this method has been largely successful and provided very useful insights, there are still many questions and uncertainties to be addressed. This work seeks to understand the impact of firn structure on gas transport in firn from a first principles standpoint through direct measurements of permeability, gas diffusivity and microstructure. The relationships between gas transport properties and microstructure will be characterized and compared to existing relationships for general porous media. Direct measurements of gas diffusivity are compared to diffusivities deduced from models based on firn air chemical sampling. Our comparison illuminates the primary importance of including microstructural parameters, beyond just porosity or density, in mass transport modeling, and it provides insights about the nature of gas transport throughout the firn column. Guidance is provided for development of next-generation firn air transport models.

75. Predicting the consequences of dreissenid mussels on a pelagic food web

Abstract: Although abundant in marine systems, hard substratum fouling organisms with high fecundity and large dispersal capability are rare in freshwater ecosystems. A noteworthy exception is a recent invader of North American lakes and rivers, the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha. Consequences of this novel ecological type in these systems are not fully understood. Using computer simulations we modelled the potential consequences of Dreissena abundance for lake planktonic community structure along a nutrient gradient, using Green Bay of Lake Michigan as an example. We constructed a model of food-web interactions that accurately reproduces abundances of phytoplankton and zooplankton along this nutrient gradient. To this model we added consumption and filtration rates of Dreissena at varying densities. Model results indicate that Dreissena have strong negative effects on large phytoplankton, with chlorophyll reduced up to 80% as compared to the same community without zebra mussels. Results also indicate that Dreissena have relatively small effects on nanoplankton and herbivorous zooplankton. Effects are qualitatively similar along the nutrient gradient, and are strongest at the most eutrophic site. The effects of zebra mussels on the abundance of small phytoplankton and zooplankton were far less than the effects of nutrient levels along the gradient. The effects of zebra mussels on the large phytoplankton, however, were in the same order of magnitude as the effects of the nutrient gradient.

76. Plastic inducible morphologies are not always adaptive: The importance of time delays in a stochastic environment

Abstract: We present a mathematical model for predicting the expected fitness of phenotypically plastic organisms experiencing a variable environment. We assume that individuals experience two discrete environments probabilistically in time (as a Markov process) and that there are two different phenotypic states, each yielding the highest fitness in one of the two environments. We compare the expected fitness of a phenotypically fixed individual to that of an individual whose phenotype is induced to produce the better phenotype in each environment with a time lag between experiencing a new environment and realization of the new phenotype. Such time lags are common in organisms where phenotypically plastic, inducible traits have been documented. We find that although plasticity is generally adaptive when time lags are short (relative to the time scale of environmental variability), plasticity can be disadvantageous for longer lag times. Asymmetries in environmental change probabilities and/or the relative fitnesses of each phenotype strongly influence whether plasticity is favoured. In contrast to other models, our model does not require costs for plasticity to be disadvantageous; costs affect the results quantitatively, not qualitatively.

Abstract: The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated the \pi^- \gamma -> \pi^- \pi^- \pi^+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt(s) < 5 m(\pi), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t' < 0.001 (GeV/c)^2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3\pi-invariant mass m(3\pi) = sqrt(s) were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of $\sqrt{s}$ with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Abstract: Interspecific comparison is a common approach in physiological ecology, comparative physiology, and biochemistry, and in such related fields as ';,functional morphology and ethology (Hochachka and Somero 1984; Feder et al. 1987; Brooks and McLennan 1991; Harvey and Page1 1991). In their most basic form, comparisons are used simply to identify which characteristics differ among species. Sometimes the goal is to identify alternative physiological or biomechanical mechanisms (multiple solutions; see, e.g., Bartholomew 1987) that have achieved a similar functional endpoint (e.g., longer legs vs. faster muscles, either of which may cause higher maximal sprinting abilities), or perhaps to identify new "models" in which to study particular phenomena (see, e.g., Faraci, Kilgore, and Fedde 1984; Kellogg and Shaffer 1993). Abstract: Squamates often follow an inverse Bergmann's rule, with larger-bodied animals occurring in warmer areas or at lower latitudes. The size of dorsal scales in lizards has also been proposed to vary along climatic gradients, with species in warmer areas exhibiting larger scales, putatively to reduce heat load. We tested for these patterns in the diverse and widespread lizard genus Sceloporus. Among 106 species or populations, body size was associated positively with maximum temperature (consistent with the inverse of Bergmann's rule) and aridity, but did not covary with latitude. Scale size (inferred from the inverse relation with numbers of scales) was positively related to body size. Controlling for body size via multiple regression, scale size was associated negatively with latitude (best predictor), positively with minimum temperature, and negatively with aridity (similar results were obtained using scores from a principal components analysis of latitude and climatic indicators). Thus, lizards with larger scales are not necessarily found in areas with higher temperatures. Univariate analyses indicated phylogenetic signal for body size, scale counts, latitude, and all climate indicators. In all cases, phylogenetic regression models fit the data significantly better than nonphylogenetic models; thus, residuals for log(10) number of dorsal scale rows exhibited phylogenetic signal.

Abstract: We report on an exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurement of the basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) over the full energy region of the ABC effect, a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the pi pi-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements, which cover also the transition region to the conventional t- channel Delta Delta process, were performed with the upgraded WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the Abashian-Booth-Crowe effect to be uniquely correlated with a Lorentzian energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a narrow resonance with m = 2.37 GeV, Gamma approximate to 70 MeV and I(J(P)) = 0(3(+)) in both pn and Delta Delta systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.

Abstract: Lizard life-history characteristics vary widely among species and populations. Most authors seek adaptive or phylogenetic explanations for life-history patterns, which are usually presumed to reflect genetic differences. However, lizard life histories are often phenotypically plastic, varying in response to temperature, food availability, and other environmental factors. Despite the importance of temperature to lizard ecology and physiology, its effects on life histories have received relatively little attention. We present a theoretical model predicting the proximate consequences of the thermal environment for lizard life histories. Temperature, by affecting activity times, can cause variation in annual survival rate and fecundity, leading to a negative correlation between survival rate and fecundity among populations in different thermal environments. Thus, physiological and evolutionary models predict the same qualitative pattern of life-history variation in lizards. We tested our model with published life-history data from field studies of the lizard Sceloporus undulatus, using climate and geographical data to reconstruct estimated annual activity seasons. Among populations, annual activity times were negatively correlated with annual survival rate and positively correlated with annual fecundity. Proximate effects of temperature may confound comparative analyses of lizard life-history variation and should be included in future evolutionary models.

Abstract: Decreased mobility of gravid females is thought to be an important cost of reproduction in lizards. We measured sprint speeds of female western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis Baird and Girard) before and after they had oviposited. Females from two California populations were about 20% slower when gravid, females from an Oregon population were about 30% slower, and females from a Washington population were about 45 % slower, compared to their speeds after recovering from reproduction. The decrease in sprint speed persisted for several weeks after oviposition, suggesting that reproduction impairs sprint performance by affecting body condition in addition to the burdening effect of eggs. Oregon and Washington females carried more mass (both somatic and clutch mass) per unit body length than California females. On the shorter bodies of Oregon and Washington lizards, eggs may interfere with the mechanics of running, in addition to their effect on the total mass of the female. In addition, gravid females from Washington had significantly higher reproductive investment (mass of clutch relative to the mass of the female after oviposition) than Oregon and California populations. Greater reproductive investment by Washington females increases, the burden carried per unit of body length; we suggest this further impairs sprint performance. Decrements in sprint speed were not significantly correlated with level of reproductive investment (per unit body mass) among females within any of the study populations. However, the burden carried per unit body length was correlated with the sprint speed decrement among gravid females from Oregon. Comparisons within and among populations suggest that differences in morphology among northern and southern populations interact with reproductive investment to produce interpopulation differences in sprint performance for gravid females.

Abstract: Researchers often estimate the performance capabilities of animals using a small number of trials per individual. This procedure inevitably underestimates maximum performance, but few studies have examined the magnitude of this effect. In this study we explored the effects of intraindividual variation and individual sample size on the estimation of locomotor performance parameters. We measured sprint speed of the lizard Sceloporus occidentalis at two temperatures (20 degrees C and 35 degrees C), obtaining 20 measurements per individual. Speed did not vary temporally, indicating no training or fatigue effects. About 50% of the overall variation in speed at each temperature was due to intraindividual variation. While speed was repeatable, repeatability decreased slightly with increasing separation between trials. Speeds at 20 degrees C and 35 degrees C were positively correlated, indicating repeatability across temperatures as well. We performed statistical sampling experiments in which we randomly drew a subset of each individual's full set of 20 trials. As expected, the sample's maximum speed increased with the number of trials per individual; for example, five trials yielded an estimate averaging 89% of the true maximum. The number of trials also influenced the sample correlation between mean speeds at 20 degrees C and 35 degrees C; for example, five trials yielded a correlation coefficient averaging 90% of the true correlation. Therefore, intraindividual variation caused underestimation of maximal speed and the correlation between speeds across temperatures. These biases declined as the number of trials per individual increased, and depended on the magnitude of intraindividual variation, as illustrated by running sampling experiments that used modified data sets.

Abstract: I investigated the relationship between microhabitat use and behavioral thermoregulation in the lizards Sceloporus occidentalis and S. graciosus. I studied two populations of each species along a 1300-m elevational gradient in the San Gabriel Moun- tains of southern California. These species occupy different, but overlapping, elevational ranges, with S. graciosus occurring at higher elevations. Because their ranges differ, the species experience different thermal environments; however, they are nearly identical in several measures of thermal physiology. Body temperatures of active lizards varied little with altitude, although air temperatures decrease substantially over this range. Both species compensated behaviorally for variation in thermal environments by varying basking frequency and microhabitat use. By ther- moregulating, lizards maintained body temperatures that favor high levels of locomotor performance and other physiological functions. Microhabitat use varied markedly with elevation. Sceloporus occidentalis was almost completely arboreal at low elevation; lizards of both species were partly arboreal, partly terrestrial at intermediate elevation; and S. graciosus was mainly terrestrial at high ele- vations. Thus, the species converged in microhabitat use where sympatric. These shifts in microhabitat use paralleled altitudinal changes in (i) the spatial location of thermally suit- able microhabitats and (ii) habitat structure. Behavioral thermoregulation, then, appears to be an important determinant of habitat use in these lizards. Results of this study may have important implications for lizard community ecology. Microhabitats that are otherwise appropriate for lizards can be thermally unsuitable, de- pending on the local thermal environment. Hence, the thermal environment and lizard thermal biology constrain patterns of structural habitat use. As a result, physiological considerations could limit the behavioral and evolutionary options for species experiencing interspecific competition. For example, competitors in sympatry may be unable to evolve microhabitat resource partitioning because only a subset of microhabitats are thermally suitable.

Abstract: An eight-cavity, 1.3 GHz, SLAC linac coherent light source II High Energy cryomodule was assembled and tested at Fermilab to verify performance before the start of production. Its cavities were processed with a novel nitrogen doping treatment to improve gradient performance. The cryomodule was tested with a modified protocol to process sporadic quenches, which were observed in Linac Coherent Light Source II production cryomodules and are attributed to multipacting. Dedicated vertical test experiments support the attribution to multipacting. The verification cryomodule achieved an acceleration voltage of 200 MV in continuous wave mode, corresponding to an average accelerating gradient of 24.1 MV/m, significantly exceeding the specification of 173 MV. The average Q_{0} (3.0×10^{10}) also exceeded its specification (2.7×10^{10}). After processing, no field emission was observed up to the maximum gradient of each cavity. This paper reviews the cryomodule performance and discusses operational issues and mitigations implemented during the several month program.

Abstract: Temperature influences the activity seasons, reproductive phenology, survival rates, and growth rates of lizards. We present a model of lizard growth that predicts phenotypic patterns of age and size at reproductive maturity in different thermal environments (i.e. different activity seasons). The model predicts a threshold in length of activity season: above this threshold (long season), lizards can mature one year earlier, but at a smaller size, compared to populations with activity seasons below the threshold. This environmentally imposed pattern reflects the proximate consequences of temperature. together with simple rules about the timing of maturation. A key prediction of the model is that age and size at maturity can vary non-linearly with the length of the activity season, and with the timing and duration of egg laying and hatching. We tested these predictions with published data from field studies of the phrynosomatid lizard Sceloporus undulatus, which is geographically widespread and occupies a range of thermal environments. We estimated activity seasons for each population by modeling the links between climates. microclimates and lizard body temperatures using heat-transfer principles. Female age at maturity showed the predicted threshold in length of activity season. whereas female size at maturity did not show the predicted threshold, but instead was negatively correlated with length of activity season. Two prairie populations were exceptions to this pattern: females matured in one year despite their short activity seasons, and consequently matured at an unusually small size. Prairie populations may have evolved differences in growth response and reproductive timing. The thermal environment appears to be an important correlate of life history variation among populations of Sceloporus undulatus.

Abstract: For the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) project at SLAC, a 1.3 GHz superconducting rf (SRF) linac is being constructed that will generate 4 GeV electron bunches at a high repetition rate to drive x-ray free electron lasers. The LCLS-II electron source, which comprises the first three meters of the electron injector, includes two normal-conducting, continuous-wave rf cavities: a one-cell, 185.7 MHz gun and a two-cell, 1.3 GHz buncher. It also includes a gun load-lock system that allows photocathodes to be changed under vacuum. The components in this beam-line section were designed and built by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory based on experience from their advanced photoinjector experiment program. In combination with the SLAC UV laser system, the electron source is designed to produce beam rates up to 1 MHz with average currents up to 30 μA initially. The source was installed in mid-2018, well in advance of the SRF linac, which is now nearing completion. The source was commissioned over a two-year period, and this paper presents results including electron beam and dark current characterization.

Abstract: First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised ^6LiD (deuteron) and NH_3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years 2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single hadron production. The sizeable asymmetries measured on the NH_ target indicate non-vanishing u-quark transversity and two-hadron interference fragmentation functions. The small asymmetries measured on the ^6LiD target can be interpreted as indication for a cancellation of u- and d-quark transversities., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, updated to the published version

98. Perch Height Selection by Juvenile Sceloporus Lizards: Interspecific Differences and Relationship to Habitat Use

Abstract: Perch height selection was studied in juvenile western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) and sagebrush lizards (Sceloporus graciosus) in the field and in the laboratory. In nature juvenile S. occidentalis were more arboreal than were juvenile S. graciosus. In laboratory experiments with lab-reared 3-4 wk old lizards, S. occidentalis perched off the ground more frequently. Differences between these two species in habitat preference are inferred to be at least partly innate, and emerge at an early age. Within each species, juveniles from different field populations differed in habitat use in the wild: lizards were more terrestrial at higher elevations. However, lab-reared juveniles from different populations of each species did not differ in laboratory tests of perch selection. In S. occidentalis there was evidence of individual variation in perch selection in the laboratory, but no among-family variation was detected.

Abstract: Ionization cooling is the preferred method for producing bright muon beams. This cooling technique requires the operation of normal conducting, radio-frequency (rf) accelerating cavities within the multi-tesla fields of dc solenoid magnets. Under these conditions, cavities exhibit increased susceptibility to rf breakdown, which can damage cooling channel components and imposes limits on channel length and transmission efficiency. We report, for the first time, stable high-vacuum, normal-conducting cavity operation at gradients of 50 MV/m in an external magnetic field of three tesla, through the use of beryllium cavity elements. This eliminates a significant technical risk that has previously been inherent in ionization cooling channel designs.
