Abstract

We introduce a control logic which allows a group of autonomous ‘pursuers’ to herd a single, non-hostile ‘evader’ along a desired trajectory. They achieve this with a general knowledge of the repulsion scheme on the evader and utilizing a feedback control, based on the evader state and the known desired trajectory of the evader. The quasi-decentralized control of the pursuers is a version of a region holding sliding mode controller (SMC). The novelty of this work lies in the decentralized distribution of pursuers within a desired region whose boundaries are maintained utilizing the robust properties of SMC. The dynamic pursuer distribution repels the evader with a desired force which reduces its tracking error. Illustrative examples are studied for validation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

We consider hostile conflicts between two multi-agent swarms, called pursuers and evaders. A Newtonian dynamics-based double integrator model is taken into account, as well as a control strategy using the relative positions and velocities of opposing swarm members. This control is introduced to achieve stability and the capture of the evaders by the pursuers. The present document considers only swarms with equal membership strengths and equal mass for simplicity. This effort begins with a set of suggested interaction force profiles, which are functions of local vectors. To formulate a robust control law, a Lyapunov-based stability analysis is used. The group pursuit is conceived in two phases: the approach phase, during which the two swarms act like two individual agents, and the assigned pursuit phase, where each pursuer has an assigned evader. Abstract

The bacterial quinol oxidase, cytochrome o, is an enzyme which is highly analogous to the better known cytochrome coxidase, cytochrome aa 3but with the important difference that it lacks the near infra-red absorbing pigment Cu A. In this article we report an absorption band in the near IR spectrum of cytochrome owith a maximal absorption at 738 nm, and which is attributable to the ferrous high-spin haem. The 758 nm band has an extinction coefficient or 0.2–0.3 mM −1·cm −1at 758–800 nm. This region in cytochrome aa 3, is dominated by the Cu Aabsorption. The 758 nm absorption is lost on addition of CO or cyanide to the reduced enzyme. The carbon monoxide compound of cytochrome oalso has absorbance bands in the near infra-red, and these may be attributable to a low-spin ferrous haem compound.

Abstract

Reported herein are the results of iterative spectral analyses based on 100 MHz P.M.R. spectra of three cis,cis-1,4-dialkyl-1,3-butadienes. The couplings thus obtained are discussed in terms of finite perturbation theory calculations on various rotamers and distorted configurations of the butadiene framework. The results are discussed in terms of the proposals of Albriktsen et al. [5]. Partitioning into σ and π contributions is also considered.

Abstract

Study design Economic modelling analysis. Objectives To determine lifetime direct and indirect costs from initial hospitalisation of all expected new traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injuries (SCI) over 12 months. Setting United Kingdom (UK). Methods Incidence-based approach to assessing costs from a societal perspective, including immediate and ongoing health, rehabilitation and long-term care directly attributable to SCI, as well as aids and adaptations, unpaid informal care and participation in employment. The model accounts for differences in injury severity, gender, age at onset and life expectancy. Results Lifetime costs for an expected 1270 new cases of SCI per annum conservatively estimated as £1.43 billion (2016 prices). This equates to a mean £1.12 million (median £0.72 million) per SCI case, ranging from £0.47 million (median £0.40 million) for an AIS grade D injury to £1.87 million (median £1.95 million) for tetraplegia AIS A–C grade injuries. Seventy-one percent of lifetime costs potentially are paid by the public purse with remaining costs due to reduced employment and carer time. Conclusions Despite the magnitude of costs, and being comparable with international estimates, this first analysis of SCI costs in the UK is likely to be conservative. Findings are particularly sensitive to the level and costs of long-term home and residential care. The analysis demonstrates how modelling can be used to highlight economic impacts of SCI rapidly to policymakers, illustrate how changes in future patterns of injury influence costs and help inform future economic evaluations of actions to prevent and/or reduce the impact of SCIs.

77. The reductive reactions of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on sulphur and selenium

Abstract

An investigation into the sulphur oxidation of iron grown Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is reported. A new mechanism for sulphur catabolism in this obligate acidophile, involving the initial reduction of the substrate, is proposed. Evidence to support substrate reduction comes from the evolution of H2S in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions (O2 and Fe3+ acting as terminal electron acceptors, respectively) and a accurate trapping method of detection is described. Levels of sulphur reduction are such that a role in the full catabolism of sulphur can be envisaged. In addition, red selenium reduction was investigated and the bioenergetic implications for both substrates are discussed.
