- Abstract
This article offers a guide to safety encounters with ants in southeastern U.S. If agitated, most ants are capable of bites and/or stings. The fire any, though, deserves special mention for its speedy aggression, notorious stings, and relentless advance throughout the southern portions of the U.S. Fire ants look very much like ordinary house or garden ants. Reaction to fire ant stings is similar to reaction to the stings of bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets. The overwhelming majority of fire ant stings are medically uncomplicated.
