Abstract

This article provides information on true or vespid wasps primarily found in the mid-Atlantic and their stings. Wasp stings are potentially lethal for those highly allergic and prone to anaphylactic shock. Other reactions vary according to the number of stings, location of stings, ratio of venom to body weight and individual sensitivity. The baldfaced hornet is very commonly found on flowers. They nest in woodlands edges, suburban yards and meadows. Also called giant hornets, the European hornet will defend their nest but otherwise they avoid confrontations. Paper wasps, long-legged and brown-reddish brown to black, have painful stings. The potter wasp is primarily black with yellow on the face, across the front and on the rear thorax.
