Abstract

Orgasmic Meditation(OM) is a structured, partnered meditative practice in which one person, who can be any gender, strokes the clitoris of their partner for 15 minutes. As such, it resembles a sexual activity. OM is taught as a practice that is distinct from sex, and we wondered whether people who engage in OM actually maintain that distinction themselves. We conducted an online convenience sample survey including qualitative open-ended text questions and quantitative Likert-style questions that was distributed to email listservs for practitioners of OM. The 30-item questionnaire included questions designed to differentiate the potentially related concepts of OM, seated meditation, fondling, and sex, as bases for comparison. The quantitative results of this mixed method study show that OM practitioners view the practice as significantly more similar to meditation than to sex or fondling. These results were consistent, regardless of whether the question was asked in the positive or negative and whether OM was being compared to one behavior individually or to multiple behaviors at the same time. The distinction between OM and sex/fondling rapidly becomes more pronounced as practitioners complete more OMs. This suggests that the novelty of genital touching in meditation may diminish over time, as practitioners get used to the more alternative point of focus. The results of this study have implications for the practice and how it is approached and regulated.

69. Self-reported eye diseases among American Indian individuals with type 2 diabetes from the northern Midwest

Abstract

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of eye diseases and utilization of dilated eye exams among a sample of American Indian (AI) individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: AI adults with type 2 diabetes utilizing health care at two reservation clinics were randomly sampled and recruited for interviewer-assisted paper surveys. The prevalence of eye diseases was compared across gender, age, income, and educational attainment. RESULTS: The prevalence of retinopathy, cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma were 9.4%, 26.7%, 5.2%, and 10.6% respectively, and 59.2% reported past year dilated eye exams. Older participants were more likely to report cataracts (p < 0.001) and glaucoma (p = .003). Those with lower income were more likely to report cataracts (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Rates of self-reported eye diseases in this sample were higher, and dilated eye exams lower than other samples of the general United States population with diabetes, suggesting improvement can be made to improve the provision of care for AI individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract

Using a validated and quantitative measure of mystical experience called the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ30), we assessed whether and to what extent participants report mystical experiences during orgasmic meditation (OM), and to what extent that experience is correlated between the partners. In the first half of this study, we asked participants to complete the MEQ30 with a single powerful OM in mind. Respondents reported a moderate to strong mystical experience, with 62% of respondents reporting a “complete mystical experience,” with women having a slightly stronger response than men. In the second study, we asked experienced practitioners to complete the MEQ30 after their next OM. These respondents reported a moderate mystical experience, with 23% reporting a “complete mystical experience”. Intriguingly, we found strong relationships between MEQ total score and role (i.e., stroker or strokee), awg = .46, but a significantly stronger relationship between partners and MEQ total score, awg = .71, zdiff = 2.10, p = .04. Whether the brains of people who OM show similar activity changes to those having other mystical experiences awaits future study.

Abstract

Molecular characterization of frequency locus (frq) reveals two transcripts mapped to this region and a third transcript. The 989-amino acid FRQ protein influences generation of circadian rhythms and stabilizes these rhythms against different environmental conditions. Removal of an open reading frame (ORF) causes loss of rhythm stability and compensation, suggesting the role of this single ORF in changing period length and temperature compensation. FRQ dictates the functioning of the Neurospora circadian clock assembly.

Abstract

Poor glucose control can be viewed as a stressor, possibly promulgating diabetes distress. We examined the relationship between perceived blood glucose control and diabetes distress over time using a partially controlled cross-lagged path analysis model. After controlling for demographics, control at 6 months was directly related to change in distress at 12 months. Subsequently, distress at 12 months was directly related to change in control at 18 months. Both 6-month control and distress had significant indirect effects on 18-month control and distress. This demonstrates the nuanced bi-directional relationship between the stress of poor perceived control and diabetes distress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We evaluated the feasibility and outcomes of administering a naturalistic saliva collection procedure and assessment in American Indian (Indigenous) communities. We focus on Indigenous adults living with type 2 diabetes given the "epidemic" of the disease disproportionately impacting many tribal groups. Data are from community-based participatory research (CBPR) involving 5 tribal communities. Participants were randomly selected from tribal clinic records. The sample includes 188 adults living with type 2 diabetes (56% female; age range = 18–77 years; M age = 46.3 years). Participants provided a total of 748 saliva samples, representing 4 samples/participant on a single day with instructions for collection at 4 time points: upon waking, 1 h after waking, 2 h after waking, and at 8 PM. Saliva sample times were recorded by participants on paper and electronically via placement in a Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS®) bottle. Overall, 67% of samples were completed within 10 min of protocol instructions and 91% of participants provided at least one useable sample (79% provided four useable samples). Noncompliance, behavioral and environmental factors were not robustly associated with deviations in observed cortisol indices. Results suggest that home-based, community interviewer-involved protocols yields valid data with high compliance. The success of this study was facilitated by exemplary efforts of tribal community-based interviewers and our overall CBPR approach. Abstract

American Indian (AI) communities experience disproportionate exposure to stressors and health inequities including type 2 diabetes. Yet, we know little about the role of psychosocial stressors for AI diabetes-related health outcomes. We investigated associations between a range of stressors and psychological, behavioral, and physical health for AIs with diabetes. This community-based participatory research with 5 AI tribes includes 192 AI adult type 2 diabetes patients recruited from clinical records at tribal clinics. Data are from computer-assisted interviews and medical charts. We found consistent bivariate relationships between chronic to discrete stressors and mental and behavioral health outcomes; several remained even after accounting for participant age, gender, and income. Fewer stressors were linked to physical health. We also document a dose–response relationship between stress accumulation and worse health. Findings underscore the importance of considering a broad range of stressors for comprehensive assessment of stress burden and diabetes. Policies and practices aimed at reducing stress exposure and promoting tools for stress management may be mechanisms for optimal health for AI diabetes patients.
