Search

A future gamma factory at CERN or accelerator-based gamma sources elsewhere can include the possibility of energetic twisted photons, which are photons with a structured wave front that can allow a pre-defined large angular momentum along the beam direction. Twisted photons are potentially a new tool in hadronic physics, and we consider here one possibility, namely the photoproduction of $\Delta$(1232) baryons using twisted photons. We show that particular polarization amplitudes isolate the smaller partial wave amplitudes and they are measurable without interference from the terms that are otherwise dominant., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We propose to use the High Momentum Spectrometer of Hall C combined with the Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) to perform high precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section using a beam of positrons. The combination of measurements with oppositely charged incident beams is the only unambiguous way to disentangle the contribution of the DVCS$^2$ term in the photon electroproduction cross section from its interference with the Bethe-Heitler amplitude. This provides a stronger way to constrain the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon. A wide range of kinematics accessible with an 11 GeV beam off an unpolarized proton target will be covered. The $Q^2-$dependence of each contribution will be measured independently.

The unpolarized and polarized Beam Char\-ge Asymmetries (BCAs) of the $\vv{e}^{\pm}p \to e^{\pm}p \gamma$ process off unpolarized hydrogen are discussed. The measurement of BCAs with the CLAS12 spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, using polarized positron and electron beams at 10.6 GeV is investigated. This experimental configuration allows to measure azimuthal and $t$-dependences of the unpolarized and polarized BCAs over a large $(x_B,Q^2)$ phase space, providing a direct access to the real part of the Compton Form Factor (CFF) ${\mathcal H}$. Additionally, these measurements confront the Bethe-Heitler dominance hypothesis and eventual effects beyond leading twist. The impact of potential positron beam data on the determination of CFFs is also investigated within a local fitting approach of experimental observables. We present a theoretical formalism for scattering of the twisted neutrons by nuclei in a kinematic regime where interference between Coulomb interaction and the strong interaction is essential. Twisted neutrons have definite quantized values of an angular momentum projection along the direction of propagation, and we show that it results in novel observable effects for the scattering cross section, spin asymmetries and polarization of the scattered neutrons. We demonstrate that additional capabilities provided by beam's orbital angular momentum enable new techniques for measuring both real and imaginary parts of the scattering amplitude. Several possible observables are considered, for which the targets may be either well-localized with respect to the spatial beam profile, or the scattering occurs incoherently on nuclei in a bulk target. A workshop on The Next Generation Gamma-Ray Sources sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Physics at the Department of Energy, was held November 17--19, 2016 in Bethesda, Maryland. The goals of the workshop were to identify basic and applied research opportunities at the frontiers of nuclear physics that would be made possible by the beam capabilities of an advanced laser Compton beam facility. To anchor the scientific vision to realistically achievable beam specifications using proven technologies, the workshop brought together experts in the fields of electron accelerators, lasers, and optics to examine the technical options for achieving the beam specifications required by the most compelling parts of the proposed research programs. An international assembly of participants included current and prospective $\gamma$-ray beam users, accelerator and light-source physicists, and federal agency program managers. Sessions were organized to foster interactions between the beam users and facility developers, allowing for information sharing and mutual feedback between the two groups. The workshop findings and recommendations are summarized in this whitepaper.

Current precision scattering experiments and even more so many experiments planed for the Electron Ion Collider will be limited by systematics. From the theory side, a fundamental source of systematic uncertainty is the correct treatment of radiative effects. To gauge the current state of technique and knowledge, help the cross-pollination between different direction of nuclear physics, and to give input to the yellow report process, the community met in an ad-hoc workshop hosted by the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science, Stony Brook University. This whitepaper is a collection of contributions to this workshop.

While information is ubiquitously generated, shared, and analyzed in a modern-day life, there is still some controversy around the ways to asses the amount and quality of information inside a noisy optical channel. A number of theoretical approaches based on, e.g., conditional Shannon entropy and Fisher information have been developed, along with some experimental validations. Some of these approaches are limited to a certain alphabet, while others tend to fall short when considering optical beams with non-trivial structure, such as Hermite-Gauss, Laguerre-Gauss and other modes with non-trivial structure. Here, we propose a new definition of classical Shannon information via the Wigner distribution function, while respecting the Heisenberg inequality. Following this definition, we calculate the amount of information in a Gaussian, Hermite-Gaussian, and Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes in juxtaposition and experimentally validate it by reconstruction of the Wigner distribution function from the intensity distribution of structured laser beams. We experimentally demonstrate the technique that allows to infer field structure of the laser beams in singular optics to assess the amount of contained information. Given the generality, this approach of defining information via analyzing the beam complexity is applicable to laser modes of any topology that can be described by 'well-behaved' functions. Classical Shannon information defined in this way is detached from a particular alphabet, i.e. communication scheme, and scales with the structural complexity of the system. Such a synergy between the Wigner distribution function encompassing the information in both real and reciprocal space, and information being a measure of disorder, can contribute into future coherent detection algorithms and remote sensing.

The Hierarchical Chinese Postman Problem is finding a shortest traversal of all edges of a graph respecting precedence constraints given by a partial order on classes of edges. We show that the special case with connected classes is NP-hard even on orders decomposable into a chain and an incomparable class. For the case with linearly ordered (possibly disconnected) classes, we get 5/3-approximations and fixed-parameter algorithms by transferring results from the Rural Postman Problem., Comment: Fixed Figure 4 and an argument in the proof of Lemma 3.7(iii)

Chiral degrees of freedom occur in matter and in electromagnetic fields and constitute an area of research that is experiencing renewed interest driven by recent observations of the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in chiral molecules and engineered nanomaterials. The CISS effect underpins the fact that charge transport through nanoscopic chiral structures favors a particular electronic spin orientation, resulting in large room-temperature spin polarizations. Observations of the CISS effect suggest opportunities for spin control and for the design and fabrication of room-temperature quantum devices from the bottom up, with atomic-scale precision. Any technology that relies on optimal charge transport, including quantum devices for logic, sensing, and storage, may benefit from chiral quantum properties. These properties can be theoretically and experimentally investigated from a quantum information perspective, which is presently lacking. There are uncharted implications for the quantum sciences once chiral couplings can be engineered to control the storage, transduction, and manipulation of quantum information. This forward-looking perspective provides a survey of the experimental and theoretical fundamentals of chiral-influenced quantum effects, and presents a vision for their future roles in enabling room-temperature quantum technologies.

With wavelength tunability, free-electron lasers (FELs) are well-suited for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams in a wide photon energy range. We report the first experimental demonstration of OAM beam generation using an oscillator FEL. Lasing around 458 nm, we have produced the four lowest orders of coherently mixed OAM beams with good beam quality, excellent stability, and substantial intracavity power. We have also developed a pulsed mode operation of the OAM beam with a highly reproducible temporal structure for a range of modulation frequencies from 1 to 30 Hz. This development can be extended to short wavelengths, for example to x-rays using a future x-ray FEL oscillator. The operation of such an OAM FEL also paves the way for the generation of OAM gamma-ray beams via Compton scattering.

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Furthermore, positron beams offer the possibility of alternative tests of the Standard Model of particle physics through the search of a dark photon, the precise measurement of electroweak couplings, and the investigation of charged lepton flavor violation. We consider physical processes caused by the twisted photons for a wide range of energy scales, from optical (eV) to nuclear (MeV) to high-energy gamma-rays (TeV). We demonstrate that in order to satisfy angular momentum conservation, absorption of a twisted photon leads to a transverse recoil of the final particle or a system of particles leading to increased threshold energy required for the reaction to proceed. Modification of the threshold energy is predicted for (a) Photo-absorption on colds trapped ions of $^{40}$Ca, along with emerging new transverse-motion sidebands, (b) photo-disintegration of deuterium and (c) photo-production of electron-positron pairs in astrophysics environment., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The influence of the hard photon emission on the charge asymmetry in the (anti)lepton-proton elastic scattering was evaluated for the first time beyond the ultrarelativistic limit, while retaining the lepton mass at all steps of the calculation. This contribution - responsible for the charge asymmetry - is induced by interference between real photon emission from the lepton and proton. During the calculation any excited states of the intermediated proton are not considered, allowing us to use the standard fermionic propagator for this particle. The infrared divergence extracted using Lorenz-invariant approach of Bardin-Shumeiko is canceled by the corresponding soft part of the two-photon exchange contribution. AU Microscopii (AU Mic) is the second closest pre main sequence star, at a distance of 9.79 parsecs and with an age of 22 million years. AU Mic possesses a relatively rare and spatially resolved3 edge-on debris disk extending from about 35 to 210 astronomical units from the star, and with clumps exhibiting non-Keplerian motion. Detection of newly formed planets around such a star is challenged by the presence of spots, plage, flares and other manifestations of magnetic activity on the star. Here we report observations of a planet transiting AU Mic. The transiting planet, AU Mic b, has an orbital period of 8.46 days, an orbital distance of 0.07 astronomical units, a radius of 0.4 Jupiter radii, and a mass of less than 0.18 Jupiter masses at 3 sigma confidence. We consider general relativity with cosmological constant minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field and assume that the four-dimensional space-time manifold is a warped product of two surfaces with Lorentzian and Euclidean signature metrics. Field equations imply that at least one of the surfaces must be of constant curvature leading to the symmetry of the metric (``spontaneous symmetry emergence''). We classify all global solutions in the case when the Lorentzian surface is of constant curvature. These solutions are invariant with respect to the Lorentz SO(1,2) or Poincare IO(1,1) groups acting on the Lorentzian surface., Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures

When polarized light is absorbed by an atom, the excited atomic system carries information about the initial polarization of light. For the light that carries an orbital angular momentum, or the twisted light, the polarization states are described by eight independent parameters, as opposed to three Stokes parameters for plane waves. We use a parameterization of the spin-density matrix of the twisted light in terms of vector and tensor polarization, in analogy with massive spin-1 particles, and derive formulae that define atom's response to specific polarization components of the twisted light. It is shown that for dipole ($S\to P$) atomic transitions, the atom's polarization is in one-to-one correspondence with polarization of the incident light; this relation is violated, however, for the transitions of higher multipolarity ($S\to D$, $S\to F$, etc.) We pay special attention to contributions of the longitudinal electric field into the matrix elements of atomic transitions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; one figure added. This document complements and completes what was submitted last year to PAC45 as an update to the proposal PR12-16-001 "Dark matter search in a Beam-Dump eXperiment (BDX)" at Jefferson Lab submitted to JLab-PAC44 in 2016. Following the suggestions contained in the PAC45 report, in coordination with the lab, we ran a test to assess the beam-related backgrounds and validate the simulation framework used to design the BDX experiment. Using a common Monte Carlo framework for the test and the proposed experiment, we optimized the selection cuts to maximize the reach considering simultaneously the signal, cosmic-ray background (assessed in Catania test with BDX-Proto) and beam-related backgrounds (irreducible NC and CC neutrino interactions as determined by simulation). Our results confirmed what was presented in the original proposal: with 285 days of a parasitic run at 65 $\mu$A (corresponding to $10^{22}$ EOT) the BDX experiment will lower the exclusion limits in the case of no signal by one to two orders of magnitude in the parameter space of dark-matter coupling versus mass.

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental program at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the Hadronic Physics program at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon, in both the elastic and the deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of (un)polarized electrons and positrons off the nucleon allows for a model independent determination of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon. We estimate the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic lepton-proton scattering without employing the ultrarelativistic approximation. Our calculation is relevant for analyses of muon scattering at energies of few hundred MeV and below -- when effects of the muon mass become essential. At such energies, the transverse polarization of the muon beam is expected to contribute significantly to the systematic uncertainty of precision measurements of elastic muon-proton scattering. We evaluate such systematics using an example of the MUSE experiment at PSI. Thanks to J.~Schwinger, the process of elastic scattering of neutrons by nuclei is known to depend on the interference between a nuclear amplitude and an electromagnetic one for small scattering angles, resulting in spin asymmetries of a cross section or in polarization of the scattered neutrons. While this interference depends on the neutron's {\it transverse} polarization and on {\it an imaginary part} of the nuclear amplitude, this conclusion holds only for the incident plane-wave neutrons with a definite momentum. Here we show that this scattering is altered when the twisted neutrons, recently obtained experimentally, are used instead -- that is, neutrons with an orbital angular momentum. For bulk targets, the angular distributions of the scattered neutrons get modified, while scattering of a superposition of states with the different angular momenta also reveals dependence on the longitudinal polarization. For well-localized targets, the observables develop a dependence on the neutron's {\it helicity} and on {\it a real part} of the nuclear amplitude, providing full access to its phase already in the Born approximation. We argue that the corresponding spin asymmetries are measurable at existing neutron facilities. Thus, scattering of the twisted neutrons by nuclei can provide means for quantum tomography of the neutron states and become a useful tool for hadronic studies, low-energy nuclear physics, tests of fundamental symmetries, and neutron optics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; revised version includes an additional figure

We demonstrate that photoemission properties of GaAs photocathodes (PCs) can be altered by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) generated on the PC surface due to dynamical piezoelectric fields of SAWs. Simulations with COMSOL indicate that electron effective lifetime in p-doped GaAs may increase by a factor of 10x to 20x. It implies a significant, by a factor of 2x to 3x, increase of quantum efficiency (QE) for GaAs PCs. Essential steps in device fabrication are demonstrated, including deposition of an additional layer of ZnO for piezoelectric effect enhancement, measurements of I-V characteristic of the SAW device, and ability to survive high-temperature annealing., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We consider general relativity with cosmological constant minimally coupled to electromagnetic field and assume that four-dimensional space-time manifold is the warped product of two surfaces with Lorentzian and Euclidean signature metrics. Einstein's equations imply that at least one of the surfaces must be of constant curvature. It means that the symmetry of the metric arises as the consequence of equations of motion (`spontaneous symmetry emergence'). We give classification of global solutions in two cases: (i) both surfaces are of constant curvature and (ii) the Riemannian surface is of constant curvature. The latter case includes spherically symmetric solutions (sphere S^2 with SO(3)-symmetry group), planar solutions (two-dimensional Euclidean space R^2 with IO(2)-symmetry group), and hyperbolic solutions (two-sheeted hyperboloid H^2 with SO(1,2)-symmetry). We report the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) discovery of three terrestrial-sized planets transiting L 98-59 (TOI-175, TIC 307210830) -- a bright M dwarf at a distance of 10.6 pc. Using the Gaia-measured distance and broad-band photometry we find that the host star is an M3 dwarf. Combined with the TESS transits from three sectors, the corresponding stellar parameters yield planet radii ranging from 0.8REarth to 1.6REarth. All three planets have short orbital periods, ranging from 2.25 to 7.45 days with the outer pair just wide of a 2:1 period resonance. Diagnostic tests produced by the TESS Data Validation Report and the vetting package DAVE rule out common false positive sources. These analyses, along with dedicated follow-up and the multiplicity of the system, lend confidence that the observed signals are caused by planets transiting L 98-59 and are not associated with other sources in the field. The L 98-59 system is interesting for a number of reasons: the host star is bright (V = 11.7 mag, K = 7.1 mag) and the planets are prime targets for further follow-up observations including precision radial-velocity mass measurements and future transit spectroscopy with the James Webb Space Telescope; the near resonant configuration makes the system a laboratory to study planetary system dynamical evolution; and three planets of relatively similar size in the same system present an opportunity to study terrestrial planets where other variables (age, metallicity, etc.) can be held constant. Photons carrying a well-defined orbital angular momentum have been proven to modify spectroscopic selection rules in atomic matter. Excitation profiles of electric quadrupole transitions have been measured with single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions for varying polarizations. We further develop the photo-absorption formalism to study the case of arbitrary alignment of the beam's optical axis with respect to the ion's quantization axis and mixed multipolarity. Thus, predictions for M1-dominated $^{40}Ar^{13+}$, E3-driven $^{171}Yb^+$ and $^{172}Yb^+$, and B-like $^{20}Ne^{5+}$ are presented. Inter-band photo-excitation of electron states with the twisted photons in GaAs, a direct band-gap bulk semiconductor, is considered theoretically. Assuming linearity of the quantum transition amplitudes and applying Wigner-Eckart theorem, we derive a plane-wave expansion of twisted-photon amplitudes and obtain relative probabilities for magnetic sub-level population of the photo-electrons in conduction band. The approach for calculating the position dependent electron polarization, resulting from photo-absorption of twisted light, is described for vertical transitions in the $\Gamma$ - point. Theoretical predictions for GaAs show the interplay of spin and orbital angular momentum of the twisted photons that alters the magnitude and the sign of photoelectron polarization in the region near photon's phase singularity., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Elastic lepton scattering off of a nucleon has proved to be an efficient tool to study the structure of the hadron. Modern cross section and asymmetry measurements at Jefferson Lab require effects beyond the leading order Born approximation to be taken into account. Availability of unpolarized beams of both electrons and positrons in respective experiments would enable to reduce systematic uncertainties due to higher-order charge-odd contributions. In addition, information on an unpolarized electron-to-positron cross section ratio could serve as a test for theoretical models that provide predictions for charge-dependent radiative corrections to elastic lepton-nucleon scattering. Availability of polarized beams of leptons would allow for even more comprehensive study of higher-order effects as some of them are dominant in polarized lepton-nucleon scattering asymmetries. I conducted differential photometry on a star GSC 3281-0800, a known host to exoplanet HAT-P-32b, using analysis software AstroImageJ. I plotted the measurements from a series of images taken during the transit, via ADU count given from an earth-based digital CCD camera. We estimate the target-normal single-spin asymmetry at nearly forward angles in elastic electron-nucleon scattering. In the leading-order approximation, this asymmetry is proportional to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange (TPE) amplitude, which can be expressed as an integral over the doubly virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) tensor. We develop a model that parametrizes the VVCS tensor for the case of nearly forward scattering angles. Our parametrization ensures a proper normalization of the imaginary part of the TPE amplitude on the well-known forward limit expression, which is given in terms of nucleon structure functions measurable in inelastic electron-nucleon scattering experiments. We analyze atomic photoexcitation into the discrete states by twisted photons, or photons carrying extra orbital angular momentum along their direction of propagation. From the angular momentum and parity considerations, we are able to relate twisted-photon photoexcitation amplitudes to their plane-wave analogues, independently of the details of the atomic wave functions. We analyzed the photo-absorption cross sections of mixed-multipolarity $E2-M1$ transitions in ionized atoms and found fundamental differences coming from the photon topology. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that it is possible to extract the relative transition rates of different multipolar contributions by measuring the photo-excitation rate as a function of the atom's position (or the impact parameter) with respect to the optical vortex center. The proposed technique for separation of multipoles can be implemented if the target's atom position is resolved with sub-wavelength accuracy, for example, with Paul traps. This document is an update to the proposal PR12-16-001 Dark matter search in a Beam-Dump eXperiment (BDX) at Jefferson Lab submitted to JLab-PAC44 in 2016 reporting progress in addressing questions raised regarding the beam-on backgrounds. The concerns are addressed by adopting a new simulation tool, FLUKA, and planning measurements of muon fluxes from the dump with its existing shielding around the dump. First, we have implemented the detailed BDX experimental geometry into a FLUKA simulation, in consultation with experts from the JLab Radiation Control Group. The FLUKA simulation has been compared directly to our GEANT4 simulations and shown to agree in regions of validity. The FLUKA interaction package, with a tuned set of biasing weights, is naturally able to generate reliable particle distributions with very small probabilities and therefore predict rates at the detector location beyond the planned shielding around the beam dump. Second, we have developed a plan to conduct measurements of the muon ux from the Hall-A dump in its current configuration to validate our simulations., Comment: Document submitted to JLab PAC 45

The difference in proton radii measured with $\mu p$ atoms and with $ep$ atoms and scattering remains an unexplained puzzle. The PSI MUSE proposal is to measure $\mu p$ and $e p$ scattering in the same experiment at the same time. The experiment will determine cross sections, two-photon effects, form factors, and radii independently for the two reactions, and will allow $\mu p$ and $ep$ results to be compared with reduced systematic uncertainties. These data should provide the best test of lepton universality in a scattering experiment to date, about an order of magnitude improvement over previous tests. Measuring scattering with both particle polarities will allow a test of two-photon exchange at the sub-percent level, about a factor of four improvement on uncertainties and over an order of magnitude more data points than previous low momentum transfer determinations, and similar to the current generation of higher momentum transfer electron experiments. The experiment has the potential to demonstrate whether the $\mu p$ and $ep$ interactions are consistent or different, and whether any difference results from novel physics or two-photon exchange. The uncertainties are such that if the discrepancy is real it should be confirmed with $\approx$5$\sigma$ significance, similar to that already established between the regular and muonic hydrogen Lamb shift.
