International audience; Conservation agriculture (CA) has been promoted to mitigate climate change, reduce soil erosion, and provide a variety of ecosystem services. Yet, its impacts on crop yields remains controversial. To gain further insight, we mapped the probability of yield gain when switching from conventional tillage systems (CT) to CA worldwide. Relative yield changes were estimated with machine learning algorithms trained by 4403 paired yield observations on 8 crop species extracted from 413 publications. CA has better productive performance than no-till system (NT), and it stands a more than 50% chance to outperform CT in dryer regions of the world, especially with proper agricultural management practices. Residue retention has the largest positive impact on CA productivity comparing to other management practices. The variations in the productivity of CA and NT across geographical and climatical regions were illustrated on global maps. CA appears as a sustainable agricultural practice if targeted at specific climatic regions and crop species.

Introduction : La rage reste un problème majeur pour la santé publique. À Madagascar, malgré les méthodes de diagnostics et les mesures de surveillances appliquées, le virus de rage ne cesse de circuler. L'objectif de cette étude est d'évaluer les connaissances, attitudes et pratiques de la population des trois principales réserves naturelles de Menabe et d'identifier des outils plus adaptés à la sensibilisation sur cette maladie dans cette zone. Matériels et méthodes : Il s'agit d'une étude déscriptive transversale qui s'est déroulée en deux phases. Des messages de sensibilisation ont été diffusés entre ces deux phases d'enquêtes. Résultats : La moyenne de scores CAP des participants est passée de 27,9% (en baseline) à 66,1% de bonnes réponses (en endline). Le film court-métrage a touché plus de personnes sensibilisées que les autres outils utilisés à 85,6% (250/292). Conclusion : Cette étude a montré une amélioration de niveau CAP sur la rage des 10 Fokontany entre les deux phases d'enquêtes. La considération des spécificités locales est importante sur la mise en place de politique sur la rage à Madagascar afin d'atteindre l'objectif mondial d'éradication de décès humains liés à la rage du chien d'ici 2030.

La croissance de la population des pays en développement impose parfois des besoins d’accroissement de la production agricole. Un projet de fertilisation phosphatée de la riziculture pluviale à Madagascar a été mené de façon participative entre des acteurs de recherche et des agriculteurs pour rehausser le rendement. Cependant, l’adoption de l’innovation a été très vite abandonnée par les agriculteurs. La démarche ImpresS (Impact des Recherches au Sud) a été utilisée sur ce projet pour évaluer ses impacts en élaborant un modèle répondant aux conditions d’adoption de l’innovation. Malgré l’abandon précoce de l’engrais cible (le phosphore minéral), la démarche ImpresS a permis d’identifier des processus qui ont amené aux impacts. Les résultats identifient un modèle d’innovation se présentant sous forme d’interaction ou de coproduction de connaissances entre les différents acteurs. Cette interaction permet de renforcer les capacités de tous les acteurs du projet à changer de pratiques ou à innover. En effet, les renforcements de capacités permettent à tous les acteurs engagés d’acquérir des impacts qui sont des nouvelles capacités techniques et fonctionnelles. Il en est déduit des réflexions collectives pour l’élaboration de futurs projets incluant une « culture d’impact » permettant une meilleure adoption de l’innovation apportée par la recherche.

Le Brésil est parmi les plus gros consommateurs mondiaux de pesticides, pourtant leur impact sur les populations locales peine à émerger en tant que problème public, en raison d’un contexte politique particulièrement favorable à l’agriculture industrielle. Dans cet article, nous investiguons comment les connaissances produites sur l’impact des pesticides contribuent (ou non) à faire émerger ce problème public. Notre réflexion s’appuie sur un processus de science citoyenne mené dans la région de Santarém, en Amazonie Brésilienne, où le soja connaît une importante expansion depuis 20 ans. Nous y avons construit depuis 2017 un observatoire en partenariat avec les syndicats paysans, pour rendre visible l’impact des pesticides utilisés dans les cultures de soja sur l’agriculture familiale. Des jeunes agriculteurs, formés à être « chercheurs communautaires », ont administré 544 questionnaires auprès d’agriculteurs familiaux pour connaître leurs pratiques et évaluer les changements occasionnés depuis l’arrivée du soja. Nous menons une analyse à trois niveaux : au niveau national, nous suivons l’émergence des pesticides comme problème public, sa consolidation au cours du gouvernement travailliste (2003-2016), puis son démantèlement ; au niveau local, l’enquête montre à quel point les agriculteurs familiaux sont fortement impactés par les pesticides et dans le même temps peu conscients d’être des « victimes » ; enfin, au niveau territorial, nous nous interrogerons sur la fragilisation du débat entre science et politique, notamment au sein du Forum régional de lutte contre l’impact des pesticides mis en place à Santarém., Although Brazil is among the world's largest consumers of pesticides, their impacts on local populations have struggled to emerge as a public problem due to a political context that is particularly favourable to industrial agriculture. In this article, we investigate how the knowledge produced on the impact of pesticides contributes (or not) to the emergence of this public problem. We conduct a reflection based on a citizen science process we conducted in the region of Santarem, in the Brazilian Amazon, where soybean has been expanding significantly for the past 20 years. Since 2017, we have built an observatory in partnership with peasant unions to make visible the impact of pesticides used in soy crops on family farmers. Young farmers, trained to become "community researchers", have administered 544 questionnaires to family farmers to learn about their practices and assess the changes caused since the arrival of soy. We conduct an analysis at three levels: at the national level, we follow the emergence of pesticides as a public issue, its consolidation during the Labor government (2003-2016), and then its dismantling; at a local level, the survey reveals how the family farmers are impacted by soy pesticides and at the same time, not so aware of being "victims"; finally, at the territorial level, we question the weakening of the debate between science and politics, particularly within the Regional Forum for the fight against the impact of pesticides set up in Santarém., Embora o Brasil esteja entre os maiores consumidores mundiais de agrotóxicos, seus impactos na população raramente são tratados como problema público, devido a um contexto político particularmente favorável à agricultura industrial. Neste artigo, investigamos como o conhecimento produzido sobre os impactos dos agrotóxicos contribui (ou não) para torná-los problema público. Conduzimos uma reflexão ancorada num processo de pesquisa baseado na ciência cidadã, na região de Santarém, na Amazônia brasileira, onde plantios de soja aumentaram significativamente ao longo dos últimos 20 anos. Desde 2017, construímos um observatório das dinâmicas socioambientais em parceria com sindicatos ligados à agricultura familiar, para, entre outros propósitos, tornar visível o impacto dos agrotóxicos utilizados nas culturas de soja sobre os agricultores familiares. Jovens agricultores, formados para se tornarem "pesquisadores comunitários", aplicaram 544 questionários junto a agricultores familiares para conhecer as suas práticas e avaliar as mudanças causadas desde a chegada da soja. Conduzimos uma análise em três esferas : na esfera nacional, acompanhamos a emergência dos agrotóxicos como uma questão pública, a sua consolidação durante o governo Trabalhista (2003-2016), e depois o seu desmantelamento após esse período; na esfera local, nossa pesquisa mostra que os agricultores familiares estão sendo bastante impactados pela intensa pulverização de pesticidas nos plantios de soja mas nem sempre estavam conscientes de serem atingidos; finalmente, na esfera territorial, questionamos o enfraquecimento do debate entre ciência e política, particularmente no âmbito do Fórum Regional para a luta contra o impacto dos agrotóxicos criado em Santarém.

International audience; Biodiversity offsets aim to compensate the negative residual impacts of development projects on biodiversity, including ecosystem functions, uses by people and cultural values. Conceptually, ecosystem services (ES) should be considered, but in practice this integration rarely occurs. Their consideration would improve the societal impact of biodiversity offsets. However, the prioritisation of ES in a given area is still limited. We developed a framework for this purpose, applied in rangelands landscapes in Kazakhstan, in the context of uranium mining. We assumed that different landscapes provide different ES, and that stakeholders perceive ES according to their category (e.g., elders and herders) and gender. We performed qualitative, semi-structured interviews with a range of stakeholders. Using the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services, we identified 300 ES in 31 classes across 8 landscape units. We produced a systemic representation of the provision of ES across the landscapes. We showed a significant link between ES and landscape units, but not between ES and stakeholder categories or gender. Stakeholders mostly identified ES according to the location of their villages. Therefore, we suggest that the biodiversity offsets should target ES provided by the landscape unit where mining activities occur and would be most interesting in the landscapes common to all villages. By performing a systemic representation, potential impacts of some offset strategies can be predicted. The framework was therefore effective in determining a bundle of ES at a landscape scale, and in prioritising them for future biodiversity offset plans.

Les recherches sur la mise au point d’un aliment nouveau à partir de grains de blé dur selon un procédé de transformation breveté et commercialisé sous la marque EBLY® (actuellement près de 9 000 tonnes de produits vendus en France et à l’export ) ont contribué à générer plusieurs impacts sur la société. (1)Economique : création d’un marché, retombés économiques pour les agriculteurs de la coopérative et pour l’usine. (2)Politique : utilisation par le Ministère de l’Agriculture de l’Ebly comme exemple de levier d’action pour valoriser la consommation de protéines végétales dans l’alimentation humaine. (3)Environnementaux : Source de protéines avec empreinte environnementale améliorée par rapport aux protéines d’origine animale, mise en place d'une filière de blé dur respectueuse de l'environnement.(4)Santé : Diversification alimentaire : nouveau produit prêt à cuire avec profil nutritionnel intéressant. (5)Sociaux : Création d’emplois industriels et maintien d’emplois agricoles ; meilleur rémunération des agriculteurs. Cette étude a été conduite avec la méthode Asirpa ex-post.

Background Ticks are obligate blood feeders transmitting major pathogens worldwide. Over the past few years, considerable research efforts have focused on the diversity, distribution and impact of gut and intracellular bacterial symbionts on tick development and tick-borne pathogen transmission. The study of this internal microbiome requires the use of a sterilization method to remove external (i.e. cuticular) microbes present on the tick’s surface and to avoid any further contamination. Several sterilization methods exist, including ethanol- or bleach-based treatments that are both effective in killing microbes but with different potential effects on DNA denaturation. Methods We examined how these different sterilization methods impact the measure of internal microbial diversity hosted by the Cayenne tick Amblyomma cajennense (sensu stricto). Bacterial barcoding investigations based on 16S rRNA gene sequences were conducted on two batches of 50 individuals each: Ticks of the first batch were sterilized with bleach diluted at 1% and the second batch with 70% ethanol. Tick external microbiome was also determined from cuticle smearing and water samples used for tick washing. Results Bacterial barcoding investigations showed major differences between ethanol- and bleach-treated specimens. Both methods led to the detection of major intracellular bacteria associated with A. cajennense (s.s.) but ethanol-treated ticks always harbored a higher bacterial diversity than bleach-treated ticks. Further examinations of tick gut and tick external microbiome revealed that ethanol-based surface sterilization method is inefficient to eliminate the DNA of external bacteria. Conclusions We herein provide evidence that studies investigating the internal microbiome of ticks should consider bleach as the gold standard to efficiently remove cuticular bacterial DNA. Indeed, this method does not impact the internal bacterial diversity hosted by ticks and is thus a better method than the ethanol-based one for studying the internal microbiome. Two recent literature reviews have shown that: i) agroecological crop protection (ACP) practices generally reduce risks of viral zoonoses, unlike conventional (agrochemical-based) practices which tend to increase them; ii) substitution-based crop protection (CP) practices (mainly biocontrol-based) could result in fewer health risks from bacterial infectious diseases. Here, we present an analysis of the scientific literature to determine to what extent the conclusions regarding viruses or bacteria can be extended to infectious diseases caused by protozoan or helminthic parasites. This analysis of cases of both vector-transmitted and water- or food-borne parasitic diseases, shows, in terms of reduction of health risks: i) an overall negative effect arising from the use of synthetic plant protection products; ii) the relevance of substitution CP practices not strictly under the ACP banner. On the other hand, the public and veterinary health issue of antiparasitic resistance is not affected by CP practices. The positive effects at the large spatio-temporal scales of ACP approaches remain valid, although to a slightly lesser extent than for bacterial diseases and viral zoonoses, in particular through biodiversity conservation which fosters natural regulations and control, preventing the undesirable effects of synthetic pesticides.

Bovine hypodermosis (warble fly infestation) is a disease of cattle caused by flies whose larvae specifically parasitize cattle. This disease limits growth and milk production and seriously affects animal health. The results of studies conducted by INRAE and its partners have greatly contributed to the implementation of a program to eradicate hypodermosis in France. The disease has been totally under control since 2000.Bovine hypodermosis is caused by Hypoderma bovis and Hypoderma lineatum, non-biting flies, whose larvae specifically parasitize cattle. They cross the skin, migrate into deep tissues over several months, reach the dorsal subcutaneous tissue, where they cause abscesses, and finally pierce the skin of the animal migrating into the external environment.These parasites cause general immunosuppression, limiting the growth of young cattle and reducing milk production in cows. Further, they cause carcasses to be peeled at slaughter, produce serious damage to hides, and adversely affect animal welfare.In the 1980s, INRAE, together with Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Toulouse and other partners, conducted an ambitious research program, which sought to establish the epidemiology of Hypoderma species and identify a systematic treatment of animals without endangering consumers, breeders and animals. These essential conditions for implementing an effective strategy for controlling hypodermosis were achieved by administering a microdose of ivermectin and developing an immunodiagnosis that can be used on a very large scale with hypodermine C.Following proof of concept, achieved through the deployment of a bovine hypodermosis control plan in Brittany and then in Burgundy, the national control plan was gradually implemented throughout France by the Ministry of Agriculture and stakeholders. Within three years of implementation, the plan has led to control of this parasitic disease, and indeed to the disappearance of clinical cases of warble fly infestation. Thus, the outcome of studies conducted by INRAE and its partners has been both the establishment and proven effectiveness of the hypodermosis control program in France. In 2000, hypodermosis was completely controlled in France. ASIRPA case sudy.; L’hypodermose bovine ou varron est une maladie provoquée par Hypoderma bovis et Hypoderma lineatum, mouches non piqueuses dont les larves parasitent spécifiquement les bovins. Elles traversent la peau, migrent dans les tissus profonds pendant plusieurs mois, atteignent le tissu sous-cutané dorsal où elles provoquent des abcès, et enfin percent la peau de l’animal pour rejoindre le milieu extérieur. Ces parasites provoquent une immunodépression générale, limitent la croissance des jeunes bovins et la production laitière des vaches, obligent à l’épluchage des carcasses à l’abattage, endommagent considérablement les cuirs, et nuisent gravement au bien-être des animaux. La lutte entamée depuis les années 50, fondée essentiellement sur des insecticides organophosphorés, restait limitée puisque trente ans plus tard, le parasite infestait encore 40% des cheptels en France. Parallèlement à l’émergence des avermectines dans les années 70, nouvelle classe d’antiparasitaires, l'INRA a conduit un programme ambitieux de recherches pour préciser l’épidémiologie des hypodermes, identifier un traitement systématique de tous les animaux sans danger pour le consommateur, l’éleveur et l’animal par l’ivermectine en microdose, développer un immunodiagnostic utilisable à très grande échelle avec l’hypodermine C, trois conditions incontournables pour mettre en place une stratégie efficace de maîtrise de l’hypodermose. Ce programme a été réalisé en collaboration avec l’Ecole nationale vétérinaire de Toulouse (ENVT) et pour partie avec les Groupements de défense sanitaire (GDS). Les résultats, après acquisition de la preuve de concept sur le terrain en Bretagne et en Bourgogne, ont permis au ministère en charge de l’agriculture, avec l’appui des parties prenantes (vétérinaires, éleveurs, industriels du cuir et de la viande), de mettre en place un plan de lutte (1994) étendu au territoire national (1998). En termes d’impact, le plan national de lutte a conduit en trois ans à la maîtrise de l’hypodermose, à l’arrêt des traitements et à la mise en place d’un programme de surveillance par immunodiagnostic des éventuelles résurgences (en particulier en zones frontalières). L’impact économique des pertes évitées grâce à l’éradication du varron peut être évalué pour les productions nationales de lait, de viande et de cuir à 169, 98 et 111 millions d’euros respectivement en cumul sur vingt ans. L’impact environnemental est lié à la réduction des résidus dans les matières fécales pendant les traitements, à la suppression des traitements à l’issue du plan de trois ans, et à la maîtrise d’une maladie parasitaire des bovins. L’impact territorial et social inclut la valorisation de la collaboration et mutualisation entre parties prenantes, en particulier les éleveurs, et l’amélioration du bien-être des animaux. L’impact sur les connaissances vient aussi des collaborations internationales de l’INRA, en particulier via une action COST (projet européen incluant le Maghreb) et un programme européen INCO (incluant la Chine). Cette étude a été conduite selon la méthode ASIRPA ex-post.

Les nématodes sont des vers appelés aussi helminthes, et les antiparasitaires vermifuges sont des anthelminthiques. L’ivermectine (IVM) est avec ses analogues actuellement le médicament le plus utilisé au monde pour traiter les nématodes gastro-intestinaux chez les animaux d’élevage. Elle est aussi largement utilisée en médecine humaine. Son efficacité à très faible dose, sa rémanence (durée d’action), son spectre d’action élargi (également acaricide et insecticide), et sa faible toxicité chez l’hôte (mammifère), font de l’IVM un antiparasitaire révolutionnaire au moment de son lancement sur le marché des médicaments vétérinaires dans les années 80. Pour mettre en œuvre les traitements anthelminthiques avec l’IVM, on peut recourir à trois formes galéniques (présentations) différentes : la solution injectable par voie sous-cutanée (SC) ; le « Pour-On » (PO), liquide destiné à être appliqué (versé) sur toute la longueur du dos de l’animal, et passant théoriquement dans l’organisme par voie transcutanée ; et le bolus, sorte de gros comprimé conçu pour diffuser de façon prolongée dans l’estomac des ruminants (rumen). L’INRA et l’ENVT ont étudié et documenté les expositions internes et les éliminations fécales en IVM associées à ces formes galéniques, car ces connaissances sont indispensables pour répondre à des enjeux de santé publique en anticipant d’éventuels problèmes de sûreté (hygiène) alimentaire pour le consommateur, de toxicité pour l’animal et pour l’environnement, et d’efficacité (résistance des parasites). Ce programme a été réalisé en collaboration avec l’Université Paul Valéry de Montpellier, l’Université de Melbourne (Australie) et, pour les recommandations d’évolution réglementaire (AMM), la FDA (USA). En termes d’impact politique, les travaux de l'INRA sur l’IVM et les publications internationales ont été déclencheurs pour prendre en compte l’écotoxicologie et le comportement social des animaux (le PO devient une quasi voie orale par effet léchage) pour l’évaluation réglementaire des médicaments. L’impact économique porte d’une part sur l’augmentation des frais liés à l’évaluation de l’écotoxicité dans le dossier d’AMM des médicaments vétérinaires pour l’industriel, et d’autre part la diminution du coût direct et du coût environnemental pour l’éleveur via l’usage raisonné des avermectines. Cet usage raisonné de l’IVM a un impact sanitaire pour les animaux en empêchant l’émergence de résistance chez les parasites, et renforce aussi la sécurité des consommateurs par la diminution des résidus dans les produits d’origine animale. L’impact environnemental correspond au retrait, en France, de l’AMM de l’IVM bolus SR supprimant ses effets négatifs sur les écosystèmes fragiles et, sur le long terme, à la prise en compte dorénavant obligatoire de l’écotoxicité dans les dossiers d’AMM des médicaments vétérinaires. L’impact sur les connaissances vient des publications de l’INRA/ENVT démontrant que le bolus intraruminal ou le PO sont des formes galéniques non optimales en termes d’exposition à l’IVM aussi bien pour l’animal que pour l’environnement. Cette étude de cas a été réalisée selon la méthode ASIRPA., As a drug, ivermectin is used extensively worldwide to treat gastrointestinal nematodes in farm animals. It is also widely used in human medicine. Studies conducted by INRAE and its partners evaluated the efficacy and potential disadvantages of three formulations of ivermectin; in consequence, significant regulatory improvements in France and abroad have been achieved.Ivermectin, together with its analogues is, worldwide, currently the most extensively used drug for treating gastrointestinal nematodes in farm animals. It is, likewise, widely used in human medicine. Through its effectiveness at very low doses, persistence, broad spectrum of action (it is also an acaricide and insecticide) and low host toxicity, it has achieved the status of the most revolutionary antiparasitic agent to be introduced in the 1980s. For anthelmintic treatment with ivermectin, three formulations are available: a solution for subcutaneous injection; the "Pour-On", a liquid applied to the back of the animal and absorbed through the skin; and the bolus, the equivalent of a large tablet designed to dissolve very slowly in the stomach liquor of ruminants (rumen).The research studies of INRAE and its partners focused on the efficacy and possible drawbacks of the three ivermectin formulations. The data obtained have led to significant regulatory improvements in France and abroad.INRAE's work on ivermectin provided the stimulus for incorporating ecotoxicology data in submissions for Marketing Authorizations. This resulted in withdrawal of the SR (slow release) bolus Marketing Authorization. A highly positive outcome has been avoidance of excretion, in massive amounts, of ivermectin by the faecal route. It had positive benefits on ecosystems, in particular those most fragile, on mountainous summer-dry pastures.Henceforth, the compulsory incorporation of ecotoxicity in the marketing authorization dossiers for veterinary medicinal products comprises a major long term advance.Studies carried out under field conditions, taking account of the social behaviour of animals, have been shown to be relevant to therapeutic practice. The findings are now accepted either as an alternative to or additional to those long accepted under Good Laboratory Practice guidelines. An example is regulatory acceptance of the need to take account of the common practice of inter-animal licking, which results in oral absorption of drugs by other in-contact animals in the herd. The result has been regulatory acceptance of the revision of Data Sheets of ivermectin when it is applied to the back.Through this pioneering research, animal medicine has directly contributed to human health. This is an almost unique example of how the development a veterinary drug, ivermectin, fueled studies of its actions in humans, leading to its subsequent use in humans. The body of knowledge on the properties of ivermectin in animals, obtained through the INRAE studies, was influential, in particular concerning the long persistence of ivermectin, a property which allows, with a single oral dose or when administered twice a year, to control endemic tropical parasitosis, such as onchocerciasis in at-risk inhabitants of African villages.

Ecological theory suggests that biodiversity has a positive and stabilizing effect on the delivery of ecosystem services. Yet, the impacts of increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems are still under scrutiny. The empirical evidence available is scattered in scope, agronomic and geographical contexts and impacts on ecosystem services may depend on the type of diversification strategy used. To robustly assess the effects of crop diversification in agroecosystems, we compiled the results of 95 meta-analyses integrating 5,156 experiments conducted over 84 experimental years and representing more than 54,500 paired observations on 120 crop species in 85 countries. Overall, our synthesis of experimental data from across the globe shows that crop diversification enhances not only crop production (median effect +14%), but also the associated biodiversity (+24%, i.e. the biodiversity of non-cultivated plants and animals), and several supporting and regulating ecosystem services including water quality (+51%), pest and disease control (+63%) and soil quality (+11%). However, there was substantial variability in the results for each individual ecosystem service between different diversification strategies like agroforestry, intercropping, cover-crops, crop rotation or variety mixtures. Agroforestry is particularly effective in delivering multiple ecosystem services, i.e. water use and quality, pest and diseases regulation, associated biodiversity, long-term soil productivity and quality. Variety mixtures, instead, provide the lowest benefits, while the other strategies show intermediate results. Our results highlight that while increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems represents a very promising strategy for more sustainable land management, contributing to enhanced yields, enhanced biodiversity and ecosystem services, some crop diversification strategies are more effective than others in supporting key ecosystem services.

Les travaux de recherche sur l’alimentation des porcs ont été conduits par l'INRAgrâce au soutien financier de partenaires privés via des collaborations bilatérales avec des firmes services (ou des producteurs et vendeurs d’additifs) ou des collaborations plus larges regroupant une grande partie des acteurs de l’alimentation animale. Les principaux outputs de ces travaux de recherche ont été : (1) des concepts et méthodes de référence pour caractériser la valeur des ressources et les besoins des animaux, (2) des outils d’aide à la décision (OAD) pour faciliter la diffusion et l’appropriation des connaissances auprès des acteurs de la filière au niveau national et international. Les résultats de ces travaux ont été utilisés et diffusés hors de la sphère académique grâce à des activités d’intermédiation (expertises, réunions techniques) réalisées d’abord par les chercheurs eux-mêmes. Les firmes services françaises (notamment celles associées au GERNA ) ont rapidement intégré et adapté les nouveaux concepts d’évaluation des aliments pour que leurs clients bénéficient des progrès réalisés, tant pour l’énergie (énergie digestible vers énergie nette (EN)), que pour l’azote, sur leur marge nette de production. Certaines entreprises privées (Ajinomoto Eurolysine) ont financé la diffusion des résultats (aide à la production d'outils d’aide à la décision) et ont également utilisé leur réseau commercial en France et dans le monde pour aider à leur mise en pratique. Enfin, la diffusion de la connaissance sur l’adéquation entre les besoins et les apports nutritionnels pour limiter les rejets a été en grande partie effectuée grâce aux recommandations successives du CORPEN dans lequel l’INRA a eu un rôle déterminant. Au niveau de la filière porcine française et européenne, les systèmes d’alimentation chez le porc que l’INRA a conçus ont eu des impacts sur les trois piliers de la durabilité. Au niveau économique et social, ils ont permis d’améliorer la rentabilité de différents maillons de la filière (firmes services, producteurs d’aliment, coopératives et groupements d’éleveurs, éleveurs) et de préserver les emplois directs et indirects liés à l’élevage porcin dans le contexte des années 80 où le nombre d’éleveurs était en forte baisse. Ces évolutions ont aussi permis à la France de devenir autosuffisante en viande de porc alors qu’elle était fortement importatrice au début des années 80. Sur le plan environnemental, l'alimentation des animaux a été un levier d'action important qui a permis de réduire de façon très significative les pertes d'azote et de phosphore. Les travaux conduits et l’expertise des chercheurs ont eu un rôle moteur dans les réflexions qui ont mené à l’établissement, l’acceptation et l’évolution de normes environnementales plus strictes. En prenant en compte l’évolution de la production de porc, la réduction des rejets en azote et en phosphore peut-être évaluée à 11% et 46% à l’échelle nationale entre 1984 et 2010. L'étude de ce cas a été réalisée selon la méthode ASIRPA.

Bacillus cereus est une bactérie responsable de toxi-infections d’origine alimentaire représentant depuis 2011 la deuxième cause de TIAC en France. Pourtant l’impact en santé publique de B. cereus était auparavant très largement sous-estimé. En outre, B. cereus étant une bactérie pathogène principalement transmise par les aliments, elle représente un enjeu important pour les filières agro-alimentaires. Dans les années 1990s, plusieurs laboratoires d’INRAE ont orienté leurs recherches sur B. cereus, constituant la base du réseau éponyme porté par le département Microbiologie et Chaîne Alimentaire. Afin de mieux répondre aux questions que posaient la bactérie pour l’hygiène, la sécurité des aliments, et la santé humaine, le réseau a été étendu en France à des chercheurs de l’Anses, de l’Institut Pasteur, et à des laboratoires européens. Des projets de recherche collaboratifs impliquant l’Anses, des industriels, des centres techniques, ainsi que des formations, la participation à l’élaboration de normes et d’avis d’autorités sanitaires, ont permis une circulation des connaissances entre tous les acteurs de la sécurité sanitaire des aliments. Les recherches conduites par INRAE et ses partenaires ont eu un impact important sur la politique de santé publique, dans le cadre du suivi de la sécurité sanitaire des aliments. Il découle d’une prise de conscience par les acteurs du risque que représentait B. cereus, dans un contexte de sous déclaration de ce pathogène dans les années 1990s, le développement de méthodes de caractérisation de la bactérie reposant sur de nouvelles connaissances, et plus récemment de normes pour les appliquer. Un impact en santé publique a été obtenu par l’amélioration de l’hygiène dans les industries agro-alimentaires et la réduction des contaminations des aliments. Une nouvelle génération d’impacts se dessine, par la contribution d’INRAE et ses partenaires à une prise de conscience de risques sous-estimés que pose B. cereus à la santé publique. Cette étude a été conduite selon la méthode ASIRPA ex-post.

International audience; The assessment of the impacts of land management on soil quality is crucial in the current environmental context. Among the many approaches available to assess soil quality, most of studies or monitoring programs consist in the measurement of stocks using an additive approach of physical, chemical and biological, parameters. More recently, functional methods have been developed to provide tools which better account the abioticbiotic interactions. The objective of our study was to evaluate and compare the capacity of physico-chemical, biological and functional parameters to assess the effect of land management on soil quality over a gradient of disturbance based on rubber tree plantations in Chachoengsao province, Thailand. Three sets of indicators were applied based on i. soil physico-chemical analyses, ii. biological analyses, based on soil free-living nematode indices iii. functional analyses, with Biofunctool (R) indicators linked to three main soil functions (carbon transformation, nutrient cycling, soil structure maintenance). A soil quality index resulting from the aggregation of each set of indicators into a single score showed that functional assessment was the most sensitive to the gradient of disturbance. Co-inertia analysis between sets revealed a significant relationship between functional analysis and both physico-chemical and biological sets of indicators, whereas the two latter were not related. Our results validated the ability of the functional method to better reflect the complexity of the abiotic-biotic interactions of the soil system.Highlights:• Three sets of soil quality indicators were compared.• Functional indicators were the most sensitive to the gradient of disturbance.• Functional set of indicators was significantly linked to physico-chemical and biological sets.• The functional method Biofunctool® integrate both soil biotic and abiotic components.

International audience; In West Africa, farmers face challenges to innovate and change their practices toward more sustainable cropping systems. Farmer Field Schools (FFS), an advisory service based on participatory principles, aim to support farmers’ innovation. This study investigates farmers’ innovation by characterizing their trajectories of change in agricultural practices after they participated in FFS. Two contrasting types of FFS for family farmers in the cotton-growing area of West Africa were selected. The FFS differed in how they were implemented; farmer participation was either consultative (farmers participated little in developing the FFS curricula and structure) or collaborative (farmers participated actively in developing the FFS curricula and structure). Former FFS participants were interviewed on their successive changes in cropping practices over a 4 to 8-year time span. The sample included seven FFS on rainy season cropping (17 interviews in Burkina Faso, 22 in Togo), and four vegetable gardening FFS (21 interviews in Togo). The Efficiency-Substitution-Redesign framework was applied to pest management, organic and mineral fertilization and legume cropping practices. Our results show that the way FFS were implemented influenced farmers’ trajectories of change in practices. After consultative FFS, changes in practices were limited. After collaborative FFS, we found a variety of changes in the production and use of compost, biopesticides, and inclusion of legumes in the cropping system through intercropping or pure cropping. Redesign of cropping systems included increasing on-farm compost production, collective pest management, and crop rotations. Collaborative FFS can be seen as step-by-step design processes for locally adapted cropping systems. This is the first time that farmers’ trajectories of change in practices are used to assess the effects of FFS. This approach is valuable for understanding farmers’ decision making and the role of participatory innovation support initiatives such as FFS.

Background: The adoption of innovative cropping systems with low pesticide inputs would reduce environmental degradation and dependency on the use of plant protection products. Evaluating the pesticide risk to human health is a growing concern in the assessment of the sustainability of cropping practices. The assessment of human health risks linked to pesticide use in either conventional or innovative cropping systems is poorly documented in the literature. Objectives: This study focused on the assessment of pesticide exposure and human health risks from pesticide use in arable cropping systems (two monoculture and one intercropping system) associated with the use of various tillage practices (conventional tillage, reduced tillage, and no tillage). Methods: Human exposure (operators and residents) and health risks from pesticide use were assessed and compared between three conventional and six innovative cropping systems. We used the previously published BROWSE (Bystanders, Residents, Operators, and WorkerS Exposure) model based on data collected from interviews with the farmers and expert knowledge to compare the human health risk from pesticide use in the Setif area. Environmental conditions and the physical characteristics of the farmers were collected on three different farms from 2019 to 2021. Results: The modelling results demonstrate that human exposure to pesticides was systematically high under conservation tillage (no or reduced tillage) and monoculture cropping (pea and barley) conditions. It was also confirmed that operators experienced the highest cumulated exposure to pesticides (56 mg kg−1 bw day−1), followed by resident children seven days after pesticide application (0.66 mg kg−1 bw day−1). BROWSE simulations showed that dermal absorption was the most dominant route and represented more than 98% of the total amount of pesticides applied in all cropping × tillage system combinations. Regarding the overall results of the simulated human health risk, barley-pea intercropping was the most interesting system to reduce the risks for both operators and residents for all tillage practices. In addition, intercropping combined with conventional tillage was the most sustainable cropping system in terms of both agronomic performance (crop yield, Land Equivalent Ratio) and human health risk. Furthermore, the availability of advanced crop protection equipment was associated with a significant decrease in exposure and human health risk for both operators and residents. Conclusions: The prediction of human health risks using BROWSE could help farmers to make the decision to adopt conventional barley-pea intercropping as a good alternative to barley monocultures and pea monocultures under conservation tillage.

Purpose: Assessment of agricultural advisory services is crucial to improve their quality and effectiveness. Farmer Field Schools (FFS) have been adapted to meet context specific needs in crop or farm management. This article investigates whether the diversity of FFS interventions is reflected in the assessment methods used to evaluate them. Design/Methodology/Approach: Through a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature we identified 180 articles and selected 34 that assessed FFS. Implementation was characterised based on farmers' participation and FFS topics. Assessment methods were analysed using a causal chain of inputs, outputs, outcomes, and impacts. Findings: Our results showed three types of FFS: (1) technology transfer; (2) consultative participation at cropping system level; and, (3) consultative or collaborative participation at farm level. Fifteen studies did not describe FFS implementation at all. Out of the 34 assessments, 23 focused on inputs (knowledge) and outputs (changes in practices, agricultural or economic performance) for farmers. Only six studies assessed long-term impacts of FFS. Theoretical implications: We found a paradox between the shift from a technology transfer to a participatory advisory services paradigm, and the implementation and assessment of FFS, which do not mirror this shift. Assessment methods remain based on assumed technology transfer, which is not suitable for the evaluation of participatory approaches and their results, including in terms of capacity to innovate. Practical implications: Assessing FFS as a collective and farmer-centered experiential learning approach requires appropriate evaluation methods that account for the diversity of contexts, FFS implementation, and the changes they generate. Originality/Value: The diversity of FFS has rarely been analysed to date. This article proposes a typology to go beyond FFS as a catch-all term and to guide their assessment.
