IBM and BellSouth Corp's BellSouth Services unit announce they will work together on a three-year study to research and develop products and services involving high-speed data communications. The research will center around IBM's 'Paris' packet-switching technology, for transmitting voice, data, image and multimedia information. Paris technology uses Synchronous Optical Network techniques that produce throughput of up to 622M-bps. The companies plan to test different applications of the high-speed technology to determine which will be valuable in real world situations. The companies say they have not decided what applications will be tested, but field tests will begin by the end of 1991.
