Introduction: Cervical hybrid surgery (HS) combines anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) to establish an individualized surgical plan for patients with multiple cervical disc degenerative diseases. In order to maintain the stability of the spine after HS, an external cervical collar is often used. However, there is still controversy regarding the importance of a cervical collar following surgery. This study aims to determine whether the cervical collar is effective and how long it should be worn after surgery., Methods: This is a randomized, single-center, prospective, parallel-controlled trial. Eligible participants will be selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The primary outcome is the neck disability index, which will be evaluated before surgery and at one week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months following surgery. The secondary outcomes consist of the Japanese Orthopedic Association Scores, MOS 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36), visual analog scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Bazaz dysphagia scoring system, Falls Efficacy Scale, cervical collar satisfaction score, neck soft tissue assessment, and Braden Scale, as well as radiologic assessments for cervical lordosis, disc height of the operative levels, fusion rate, range of motion (ROM), and complications including anterior bone loss, prosthesis migration, and heterotopic ossification. The clinical and radiologic examinations were performed by investigators with no therapeutic relationship with the individual patient. All radiographs were examined by one independent radiologist., Ethics and Dissemination: The results of this study will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences. Background: The rate of bile duct injury in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) continues to be high due to low critical view of safety (CVS) achievement and the absence of an effective quality control system. The development of an intelligent system enables the automatic quality control of LC surgery and, eventually, the mitigation of bile duct injury. This study aims to develop an intelligent surgical quality control system for LC and using the system to evaluate LC videos and investigate factors associated with CVS achievement., Materials and Methods: SurgSmart, an intelligent system capable of recognizing surgical phases, disease severity, critical division action, and CVS automatically, was developed using training datasets. SurgSmart was also applied in another multicenter dataset to validate its application and investigate factors associated with CVS achievement., Results: SurgSmart performed well in all models, with the critical division action model achieving the highest overall accuracy (98.49%), followed by the disease severity model (95.45%) and surgical phases model (88.61%). CVSI, CVSII, and CVSIII had an accuracy of 80.64, 97.62, and 78.87%, respectively. CVS was achieved in 4.33% in the system application dataset. In addition, the analysis indicated that surgeons at a higher hospital level had a higher CVS achievement rate. However, there was still considerable variation in CVS achievement among surgeons in the same hospital., Conclusions: SurgSmart, the surgical quality control system, performed admirably in our study. In the application of synthetic aperture radar differential interferometry in urban environments, it is easy to regard the phase change in the deformation band of buildings under construction as noise that requires filtering. This introduces an error into the surrounding area while over-filtering, resulting in an error in the magnitude of the deformation measurement results for the entire region and the loss of deformation details in the surrounding area. Based on the traditional DInSAR workflow, this study added a deformation magnitude identification step, determined the deformation magnitude by using enhanced offset tracking technology, supplemented the filtering quality map and removed the construction areas that affect the interferometry in the filtering stage. The enhanced offset tracking technique adjusted the ratio of contrast saliency and coherence via the contrast consistency peak in the radar intensity image, which was used as the basis for adjusting the adaptive window size. The method proposed in this paper was evaluated in an experiment on a stable region using simulated data and in an experiment on a large deformation region using Sentinel-1 data. The experimental results show that the enhanced method has a better anti-noise ability than the traditional method, and the accuracy rate is improved by about 12%. The supplemented quality map can effectively remove the large deformation area to prevent over-filtering while ensuring the filtering quality, and it can achieve better filtering results.

Purpose: To investigate the value of tumor morphologic features of pT1-2 gastric cancer (GC) on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) in assessing lymph node metastasis (LNM) with reference to histopathological results., Methods: Eighty-six patients seen from October 2017 to April 2019 with pT1-2 GC proven by histopathology were included. Tumor volume and CT densities were measured in the plain scan and the portal-venous phase (PVP), and the percent enhancement was calculated. The correlations between tumor morphologic features and the N stages were analyzed. The diagnostic capability of tumor volume and enhancement features in predicting the LN status of pT1-2 GCs was further investigated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis., Results: Tumor volume, CT density in the PVP, and tumor percent enhancement in the PVP correlated significantly with the N stage (rho: 0.307, 0.558, and 0.586, respectively). Tumor volumes were significantly lower in the LNM- group than in the LNM+ group (14.4 mm 3 vs. 22.6 mm 3 , P = 0.004). The differences between the LNM- and LNM+ groups in the CT density in the PVP and the percent enhancement in the PVP were also statistically significant (68.00 HU vs. 87.50 HU, P < 0.001; and 103.06% vs. 179.19%, P < 0.001, respectively). The area under the ROC curves for identifying the LNM+ group was 0.69 for tumor volume and 0.88 for percent enhancement in the PVP, respectively. The percent enhancement in the PVP of 145.2% and tumor volume of 17.4 mL achieved good diagnostic performance in determining LNM+ (sensitivity: 71.4%, 82.1%; specificity: 91.4%, 58.6%; and accuracy: 84.9%, 66.3%, respectively)., Conclusion: Tumor volume and percent enhancement in the PVP of pT1-2 GC could improve the diagnostic accuracy of LNM and would be helpful in image surveillance of these patients.

With the acceleration of the pace of urban life and the development of information technology, the takeout industry has emerged as the times require, which obtains intermediate costs by distributing goods to consumers. People pay more and more attention to public health, which requires takeout workers to drive as fast as possible to ensure the quality and safety of goods, but it also makes takeout workers suffer from various occupational injuries, such as car accidents, stomach diseases caused by eating disorders and long-term psychological pressure. This paper optimized the employment protection of takeout workers in combination with their professional characteristics. This paper used the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to analyze the indicators that can evaluate the optimization effect of employment protection for takeout workers, and compared the occupation of takeout workers before and after employment protection. The experimental results showed that in Meituan takeout, the rationality of the average delivery management system before and after the optimization of employment protection was 47.2 and 64.4%, respectively; in ELEME takeout, the rationality of the average takeout distribution management system before and after the optimization of employment protection was 55.0% and 69.8%, respectively. Purpose: Cortical visual impairment (CVI) is the common cause of pediatric visual impairment in cerebral palsy (CP) while exotropia is the most common strabismus associated with CP. We aim to observe the strabismic surgery outcomes in pediatric patients with CP and CVI., Method: Our medical records were collected from pediatric patients treated in our hospital from May 1, 2017 to Jan 1, 2022. With normal intelligence assessment and diagnosis of exotropia in children with CP and CVI, microsurgeries were performed under intravenous combined inhalation anesthesia. The strabismus was examined by the prism test under best vision correction and the contrast sensitivity testing (CST) was measured at five levels of spatial frequencies., Result: A total of 38 exotropia patients with CP and CVI were identified and included for analysis during the study period with age ranged from 5 to 12 years (mean 8.45 years) and mean follow up duration was 8.7 months (6-42 months). After bilateral lateral rectus recession (with/without medial rectus resection or inferior oblique transposition), the exotropia amount of participants were obviously revealed from - 30 ~ - 140 (median, IQR: - 50, 40) prism diopters (PD) preoperatively to 0 ~ - 15 (0, 5) PD postoperatively. Statistically significantly improvements were observed at all levels of spatial frequency on CST postoperatively, especially at high spatial frequency areas (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the effect of strabismus surgery on exotropia in children with CP and CVI were stable and monocular contrast sensitivity post- operation increased significantly at all spatial frequencies levels., (© 2022. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is an intractable condition after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD), which is the primary cause of failure in retinal reattachment surgery. This study aimed to investigate the effects of chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter transcriptional factor 1 (COUP-TF1) in the development of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) both in vitro and in vivo. Adult retinal pigment epithelium cell line was used for in-vitro experiments. Immunocytochemistry assay, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot were used to measure the expression of COUP-TF1, alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and E-cadherin. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) was observed through cell counting kit-8 assay, wound healing tests, and the expression changes of related proteins. PVR rabbit models were established and evaluated by the images of fundus and vitreous cavity, pathological sections, and COUP-TF1 expression. As shown by our results, the proliferation and migration of the COUP-TF1 knockdown cells were reduced compared with the control cells with or without transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) treatment. After TGF-β1 treatment, α-SMA expression was upregulated in ARPE-19 cells but kept the same in COUP-TF1 knockdown cells. E-cadherin expression was down-regulated in all the groups but the extent of the decrease in COUP-TF1 knockdown cells was smaller. EMT was attenuated in ARPE-19 cells after COUP-TF1 was knocked down. In the in-vivo experiment, PVR severity was attenuated and the retinal detachment rate decreased on the 14th and 28th day in COUP-TF1 knockdown group. In conclusion, COUP-TF1 is related to the development of PVR, and COUP-TF1 knockdown attenuates the progression of PVR. This suggests that COUP-TF1 can be a promising candidate for the treatment of PVR.

Low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs) are a promising next-generation fuel cell due to their low cost and rapid start-up, posing a significant challenge to electrode materials with high electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we reported the bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (NiFe@CNTs) prepared by carefully controlling catalytic pyrolysis of waste plastics. Results showed that plenty of multi-walled CNTs with outer diameters (14.38 ± 3.84 nm) were observed due to the smallest crystalline size of Ni-Fe alloy nanoparticles. SOFCs with such NiFe@CNTs blended in anode exhibited remarkable performances, reaching a maximum power density of 885 mW cm -2 at 500°C. This could be attributed to the well-dispersed alloy nanoparticles and high graphitization degree of NiFe@CNTs to improve HOR activity. Our strategy could upcycle waste plastics to produce nanocomposites and demonstrate a high-performance LT-SOFCs system, addressing the challenges of sustainable waste management and guaranteeing global energy safety simultaneously., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest., (© 2022 The Author(s).)

The purpose of this study was to compare the differences of V-pattern exotropia in craniosynostosis and normal children. 39 children were included in this study, 19 craniosynostosis and 20 children in control group. They underwent comprehensive ocular examinations and received strabismus surgery. The extraocular muscle samples were analysed. Compared with the control group, craniosynostosis group had larger deviation in primary and up gaze, larger V pattern, and more severe inferior oblique overaction. For 20-40, and 50-60 prism diopter exotropia, the lateral recession in the craniosynostosis group was larger than that in the control group, 7.13 ± 0.44 mm vs 6.71 ± 0.47 mm, 8.90 ± 0.21 mm vs 7.75 ± 0.46 mm (p = 0.025, 0.000). The anterior transposition of craniosynostosis group was more anterior than that of control group, posterior 1.03 ± 1.24 vs 2.68 ± 0.94 mm (p = 0.000). Compared with the control group, the extraocular muscle abnormality in craniosynostosis was significant, 32% vs 5% (p = 0.031). There were 40 proteins in craniosynostosis group, which were different from those in control group. A larger V pattern and larger deviation is common in craniosynostosis children. For the same PD of deviation, it usually needs more recession in craniosynostosis because of the thinner and weaker extraocular muscles. The aim of this research was to test the hypothesis that changes in the intestinal microbiota lead to the alternation of histidine metabolism and Th17/Treg cell imbalance in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. In total, 46 subjects were enrolled in the study, with 32 subjects in the OSA group and 14 in the healthy group, according to polysomnography examinations. Basic clinical characteristics were collected for this analysis. Feces were collected from OSA patients to detect the gut microbiota using 16S rRNA sequencing. Peripheral blood was obtained to detect the Th17/Treg cell ratio by flow cytometry. The present research demonstrated that at the phylum level, OSA patients have a disproportionate Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio with increased Firmicutes and decreased Bacteroidetes in the gut microbiota compared to the healthy population. A Metastats analysis also indicated that the family Rikenellaceae was prevalent in the control group but not the OSA group. In addition, the abundance of Clostridium&#95;XlVa was reduced and the abundance of Alistipes was elevated in healthy subjects at the genus level. Furthermore, a Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States analysis identified the alternation of metabolic pathways in OSA patients. The current study also identified an imbalance of Th17/Treg cells in OSA patients, with OSA patients having an elevated number of Treg cells compared to the control group. We determined that the abundance of Rikenellaceae and Alistipes increased and Clostridium&#95;XlVa decreased in patients with OSA, which may have caused an imbalance in the proportion of Th17/Treg cells., (© 2022. The aim of this study was to use dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) to measure changes in blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability and cerebral edema over time in a rat model of asphyxial cardiac arrest (ACA). ACA was established by endotracheal tube clamping. Male rats were randomized into a sham group (n = 5) and three ACA groups (n = 18). After return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), the rats were randomized to perform DWI and DCE-MRI exam in the 6 h, 24 h and 72 h timepoint (ROSC + 6 h, ROSC + 24 h, and ROSC + 72 h). Results shows that fifteen of 18 animals achieved successful resuscitation in the ACA groups. The average apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) value of the whole brain in ROSC + 6 h was markedly lower than those of the sham, ROSC + 24 h, and ROSC + 72 h. The aquaporin-4(AQP4) score in ROSC + 6 h was significantly higher than those in the other groups, which were negatively correlated with the ADC values. The ratio of whole brain to masseter muscle of volume transfer constant (rK trans ), tissue interstitium-to-plasma rate constant(rK ep ), and fractional extra-cellular space volume(rV e) in ROSC + 6 h were all significantly higher than those in the sham, ROSC + 24 h, and ROSC + 72 h. The transforming growth factor β1(TGF-β1) and vascular endothelial growth factor A(VEGF-a) scores in ROSC + 6 h were significantly higher than those in the other groups, which were all positively correlated with rK trans and rK ep . In conclusions, brain injury is a frequent complication after CA and resuscitation. DWI and DCE-MRI can quantitatively evaluate brain injury in term of cerebral edema and BBB permeability after successful CPR., (© 2021. Background: Vincristine (VCR) is a chemotherapeutic drug commonly used in the treatment of Colorectal Cancer (CRC). However, VCR drug resistance may result in reduced efficacy and even failure of chemotherapy in CRC treatment. MiRNA has been demonstrated to be associated with the sensitivity of tumor cells to chemotherapy., Objectives: This study aimed to identify a novel miRNA-14669 that can reverse vincristine resistance and sensitize drug-resistant colorectal cancer cells., Methods: High-throughput sequencing was performed to screen miRNAs that are associated with VCR drug resistance, and qRT-PCR was used for further validation. The miRNA mimic and inhibitor were designed and transfected into HCT-8,HCT-116 and HCT-8/VCR cells. Wound healing test examined the effect of the miRNA on the migration of colorectal cancer cells. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate cell apoptosis of HCT-8 cells. Survivin, Bcl-2, GST3, MDR1 and MRP1 expressions were detected by Western blot., Results: The expression of miRNA-14669 in HCT-8/VCR cells was 1.925 times higher than that of the HCT-8 cells. After transfecting with mimic miRNA, HCT-8 and HCT-116 cells showed an increased survival rate. The survival rate of HCT-8/VCR cells decreased by transfection of inhibitor. The inhibitor also sensitized HCT-8 and HCT-116 cells to VCR or 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU). The migratory ability of HCT-8 and HCT-116 cells increased by miRNA mimic while reduced by miRNA inhibitor. Overexpression of miRNA-14669 reduced apoptosis, while downregulation of miRNA- 14669 increased cell apoptosis in HCT-8 cells. The mechanism of the miRNA involved in drug resistance may be attributed to apoptosis of tumor cells, detoxification of GST3 and drug efflux induced by MDR1 and MRP1. In order to avoid forming an information cocoon, the information propagation of COVID-19 is usually created through the action of "proactive search", an important behavior other than "reactive follow". This behavior has been largely ignored in modeling information dynamics. Here, we propose to fill in this gap by proposing a proactive-reactive susceptible-discussing-immune (PR-SFI) model to describe the patterns of co-propagation on social networks. This model is based on the forwarding quantity and takes into account both proactive search and reactive follow behaviors. The PR-SFI model is parameterized by data fitting using real data of COVID-19 related topics in the Chinese Sina-Microblog, and the model is calibrated and validated using the prediction accuracy of the accumulated forwarding users. Our sensitivity analysis and numerical experiments provide insights about optimal strategies for public health emergency information dissemination.

Single-component and competitive adsorption of tetracycline (TC) and Zn(ii) on an NH 4 Cl-induced magnetic ultra-fine buckwheat peel powder biochar (NH 4 Cl-BHP-char/Fe 3 O 4 ) was investigated in batch experiments. NH 4 Cl-BHP-char/Fe 3 O 4 exhibited a large surface area of 1119.097 m 2 g -1 and a total pore volume of 0.139 cm 3 g -1 and was easily separated from aqueous solution using a magnet. Also, adsorption was endothermic, spontaneous, and highly pH-dependent. The optimum pH of the single-component adsorption of TC and Zn(ii) was 4.0 and 6.5, respectively, and the optimum pH of co-adsorption was 6.0. The kinetics studies showed the prepared biochar could be rapidly adsorbed within 60 min, and chemical adsorption was dominant. For single-component adsorption, the maximum adsorption capacities of TC and Zn(ii) were 106.38 and 151.52 mg g -1 , respectively, and they underwent monolayer adsorption on the biochar surface. Moreover, for competitive adsorption, maximum TC and Zn(ii) adsorption capacities of 126.58 and 357.14 mg g -1 were achieved. Both film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion were found to be significant processes to facilitate adsorption. TC and Zn(ii) promoted the adsorption of each other. The proposed biochar could be used repeatedly for at least four cycles. All these results demonstrated that developed NH 4 Cl-BHP-char/Fe 3 O 4 was regarded as a low-cost alternative adsorbent to remove the heavy metal ions and antibiotic pollutants from water or wastewater., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Rationale: Angelman syndrome (AS) is an uncommon genetic disease characterized as serious retarded mental development and ocular abnormality., Patient Concerns: This report aims to present the ophthalmological features, and identify the diagnosis and outcomes of strabismus surgery in AS patients., Diagnosis: Three children with exotropia were diagnosed with AS based on their typical clinical features., Interventions: All patients underwent multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) analysis and accepted lateral rectus recession surgery with the assistance of intravenous combined inhalation anesthesia., Outcomes: The maternal heritage deletion of chromosome 15q11.2-q13 was verified in all patients by MLPA. All patients with strabismus could not cooperate during the vision test, and had astigmatism. The strabismus type of AS patients was horizontal exotropia, and no vertical strabismus was found. One of these patients was combined with high myopia. The hypopigmentation on the hair and iris was ubiquitous. However, retina pigmentation was normal. After different degrees of lateral rectus recession, the exotropia was significantly relieved, and the surgical effects were stable postoperatively., Lessons: Horizontal exotropia is the major strabismus type. Severe intellectual disability, hyperactivity, and speech impairment are the common characteristics of AS children. Its examination and operation design remains challenging. Thus, repeated examinations and intelligence rehabilitation are essential.

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics and early sensitive indicators of severe heat stroke patients in order to predict the development of severe heat stroke in the early stage., Methods: Thirty-eight patients with severe heat stroke admitted to emergency department of Beijing Daxing District People's Hospital from July 30th to August 5th in 2018 were enrolled. There were 18 patients suffered from exertional heat stroke (EHS), and 12 patients suffered from classical heat stroke (CHS), and 8 patients with heat spasm and heat exhaustion were selected as control group. The gender, age, onset time, body temperature, heart rate (HR), lactic acid (Lac), platelet (PLT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alanine aminotransferase (AST), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (SCr), serum sodium at admission of hospital, as well as positive rate of myoglobin (MYO) and D-dimer (the positive threshold of MYO and D-dimer was 107 μg/L and 600 μg/L respectively) were recorded and compared among the groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to analyze the prognostic value of MYO and D-dimer on heat stroke. The outcome of all patients was followed up, and the 28-day mortality between EHS and CHS patients was compared. The patient's body temperature was measured again after 4 hours of active cooling treatment (T 4 h ), and the relationship between T 4 h and 28-day mortality was discussed., Results: The majority of severe heat stroke patients were male, especially in EHS patients. EHS patients were younger than CHS ones, and had shorter onset time, with significant differences among the groups. The body temperature and HR at admission in the EHS group and the CHS group were significantly higher than those in the control group [body temperature (centigrade): 41.34±0.67, 40.39±0.58 vs. 37.80±1.39; HR (bpm): 139.78±15.63, 113.08±17.70 vs. 92.00±15.89, all P < 0.05], PLT was significantly lowered (×10 9 /L: 164.94±73.80, 165.78±53.49 vs. 249.50±84.22, both P < 0.05), and the positive rates of MYO and D-dimer were also significantly increased [MYO positive rate: 100.0% (18/18), 100.0% (12/12) vs. 50.0% (4/8); D-dimer positive rate: 77.8% (14/18), 100.0% (12/12) vs. 12.5% (1/8), all P < 0.05]. ROC curve analysis showed that positive MYO and D-dimer at admission had certain diagnostic value for heat stroke, the area under ROC curve (AUC) was 0.750 and 0.871, the sensitivity was 50.0% and 87.5%, and the specificity was 100% and 86.7%, respectively. The 28-day mortality of the EHS group was significantly higher than that of the CHS group [44.4% (8/18) vs. 8.3% (1/12), P < 0.05]. Furthermore, the 28-day mortality of the patients with T 4 h ≥ 38 centigrade in the EHS group was significantly higher than those with T 4 h < 38 centigrade [70.0% (7/10) vs. 12.5% (1/8), P < 0.05]., Conclusions: The decreased PLT and the increased D-dimer in the early stage of heat stroke indicate that the damage of coagulation mechanism is prominent in patients with heat stroke. EHS patients have the characteristics of acute onset, severe condition, rapid progression and poor prognosis, and the 28-day mortality is significantly higher than that of CHS patients. MYO and D-dimer are sensitive indicators in early stage of heat stroke patients, which can be used as reference for early diagnosis of heat stroke.

A promising UV nonlinear optical material, beryllium-free nitrate Ba2NO3(OH)3, has been synthesized via modified high-temperature solid state reactions in a self-made high-pressure apparatus which exhibits a perfect balance of a large second harmonic generation coefficient, an appropriate birefringence for phase matching, a short UV absorption cutoff edge and physicochemical stabilities.

A recently reported liquid-crystal sensor system based on the substrate competitive inclusion effects of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) has been investigated using molecular dynamics simulations in this work. In such a system, the released indicator could induce an orientational transition of liquid-crystals from planar to homeotropic. The analyte molecule can thus be easily and efficiently detected by observing the corresponding optical image changing from bright to dark. Here, the different binding affinity of β-CD for the indicator (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and the analyte (methylene blue, MB) was identified using molecular dynamics simulations and absolute binding free energy calculations. The inclusion processes calculated using the adaptive biasing force algorithm can completely explain the competitive inclusion between MB and SDS by β-CD, and thus lead to a significant change in the liquid crystal optical properties.

Background: A compression-ventilation (C:V) ratio of 30:2 is recommended for adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by the current American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. However, continuous chest compression (CCC) is an alternative strategy for CPR that minimizes interruption especially when an advanced airway exists. In this study, we investigated the effects of 30:2 mechanical CPR when compared with CCC in combination with regular ventilation in a porcine model., Methods: Sixteen male domestic pigs weighing 39±2 kg were utilized. Ventricular fibrillation was induced and untreated for 7 min. The animals were then randomly assigned to receive CCC combined with regular ventilation (CCC group) or 30:2 CPR (VC group). Mechanical chest compression was implemented with a miniaturized mechanical chest compressor. At the same time of beginning of precordial compression, the animals were mechanically ventilated at a rate of 10 breaths-per-minute in the CCC group or with a 30:2 C:V ratio in the VC group. Defibrillation was delivered by a single 150 J shock after 5 min of CPR. If failed to resuscitation, CPR was resumed for 2 min before the next shock. The protocol was stopped if successful resuscitation or at a total of 15 min. The resuscitated animals were observed for 72 h., Results: Coronary perfusion pressure, end-tidal carbon dioxide and carotid blood flow in the VC group were similar to those achieved in the CCC group during CPR. No significant differences were observed in arterial blood gas parameters between two groups at baseline, VF 6 min, CPR 4 min and 30, 120 and 360 min post-resuscitation. Although extravascular lung water index of both groups significantly increased after resuscitation, no distinct difference was found between CCC and VC groups. All animals were successfully resuscitated and survived for 72 h with favorable neurologic outcomes in both groups. However, obviously more numbers of rib fracture were observed in CCC animals in comparison with VC animals., Conclusions: There was no difference in hemodynamic efficacy and gas exchange during and after resuscitation, therefore identical 72 h survival with intact neurologic function was observed in both VC and CCC groups. Methylene blue (MB) can ameliorate behavioral, neurochemical, and neuropathological impairments in animal models of acute and chronic neurodegenerative disorders, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Myocyte enhancer factor 2 (MEF2D) is known to promote neuronal survival in several models, and several survival and death signals converge on MEF2D and regulate its activity. Here, we investigated the role of MEF2D in the neuroprotective effect of MB against glutamate-induced toxicity in HT22 neuronal cells. Our results showed that MB, event at less than 100 nM, improved the viability of HT22 cells exposed to 2 mM glutamate. MB attenuated the mitochondrial impairment and quenches the reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by glutamate. Surprisingly, MB at 50-200 nM did not affect the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, an important endogenous anti-oxidative system. Further study showed that MB increased the transcription and translation of MEF2D. In addition, MB upregulated the expression of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 6 (ND6) in a MEF2D-dependent manner. Knockdown of MEF2D abolished both MB-medicated increase of ND6 and MB-induced neuroprotection against glutamate-induced toxicity. Moreover, we showed that MB promoted Akt function activity, suppressed GSK-3β activity, and increased MEF2D level in hippocampus of mice and HT22 cells. These findings for the first time demonstrate that MB protects HT22 neuronal cells against glutamate-induced cell death partially via the regulation of MEF2D-associated survival pathway.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most malignant type of primary brain tumor in adults and can diffusely infiltrate adjacent normal tissue. GBM is therefore rarely cured by surgery or radiation therapy. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in tissue remodeling and numerous other physiological progresses. The MMPs MMP-2 and MMP-9 are associated with the invasion ability of GBM. PT93 is a novel caffeic acid amide derivative that was first synthesized in 2013. In the present study, the human GBM T98G, U87 and U251 cell lines and the normal mouse neuron HT22 cell line were used to investigate the anticancer and cytotoxic effects of PT93 in vitro . The cytotoxicity of PT93 was measured using MTT and lactate dehydrogenase assays. The anti-proliferation effect was tested using a cell colony formation assay. Gelatin zymography analysis and a scratch test were used to investigate the anti-migration mechanism of PT93. Western blot analysis was used to measure the expression of MMP-2/-9. The experimental results showed that PT93 suppressed the proliferation of T98G cells, and showed cytotoxicity effects at high concentration in T98G, U87, U251 and HT22 cell lines. Furthermore, PT93 limited the migration ability of the cells and inhibited the extracellular MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity of T98G and U251 cells. Finally, the present study confirmed that PT93 affects the level of MMP-2/-9 expression in T98G cells in a concentration-dependent manner. The present study indicates that PT93, as a novel caffeic acid amide derivative, may be used in the treatment of GBM.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether acupuncture is effective at treating dry eye disease among postmenopausal women and to identify the possible mechanisms., Methods: Twenty-eight postmenopausal women with dry eye disease were randomly divided into two groups: an acupuncture plus artificial tears (AC + AT) group and an artificial tears (AT) only group. After baseline examination of clinical parameters and tear sample collection, each patient received the designated modality of topical therapy for 2 months. Post-treatment documentation of clinical parameters was recorded, and tear samples were collected. Tear samples from the AC + AT group were subjected to two-dimensional nano-liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (2D nano-LC-MS/MS). Western blot analysis was also performed on tear samples from both groups., Results: After treatment, the Ocular Surface Disease Index scores, symptom assessment scores, scores of sign assessment, and tear break-up time were significantly improved in both groups ( P =0.000). Symptom assessment scores were significantly improved in the AC + AT group ( P =0.000) compared with the AT group. 2D nano-LC-MS/MS identified 2,411 proteins, among which 142 were downregulated and 169 were upregulated. After combined AC + AT treatment, the abundance of secreted proteins was increased, whereas that of cytoplasmic proteins decreased (Pearson's χ 2 test, P =0.000, P =0.000, respectively). Proteins involved in immunity and regulation were also more abundant (Pearson's χ 2 test, P =0.040, P =0.016, respectively), while components and proliferation-related proteins were downregulated (Pearson's χ 2 test, P =0.003, P =0.011, respectively)., Conclusion: AC + AT treatment increased protein synthesis and secretion, and improved clinical symptoms. In central nervous system, glioma is the most common primary brain tumour. The diffuse migration and rapid proliferation are main obstacles for successful treatment. Gartanin, a natural xanthone of mangosteen, suppressed proliferation, migration and colony formation in a time- and concentration-dependent manner in T98G glioma cells but not in mouse normal neuronal HT22 cells. Gartanin, at low micromole, led to cell cycle arrest in G1 phase accompanied by inhibited expression level of G1 cell cycle regulatory proteins cyclin D1, while increased expression level of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27Kip1. In addition, the secretion and activity of matrix metalloproteinases 2/9 (MMP-2/-9) were significantly suppressed in T98G cells treated with gartanin, and it might result from modulating mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signalling pathway in T98G glioma cells. Moreover, gartanin significantly induced autophagy in T98G cells and increased GFP-LC3 punctate fluorescence accompanied by the increased expression level of Beclin 1 and LC3-II, while suppressed expression level of p62. Gartanin treatment resulted in obvious inhibition of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway, which is important in modulating autophagy. Notably, gartanin-mediated anti-viability was significantly abrogated by autophagy inhibitors including 3-methyladenine (3-MA) and chloroquine (CQ). These results indicate that anti-proliferation effect of gartanin in T98G cells is most likely via cell cycle arrest modulated by autophagy, which is regulated by PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway, while anti-migration effect is most likely via suppression of MMP-2/-9 activity which is involved in MAPK signalling pathway., (© 2016 The Authors. Backgroud: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness of the elder people. This research was intended to demonstrate the different expression of microRNAs (miRNA) in AMD patients and whether they can be used as biomarkers for AMD., Methods: MiRNAs expression was measured by microarray of 6 AMD cases and 6 gender matched controls. In a larger-sample case-control study with 126 AMD cases and 140 controls, whole blood samples were detected for the differences of miRNA expression., Results: A total of 216 differentially expressed miRNAs (111 increased and 105 decreased miRNAs) were detected from circulating miRNA microarray. Expanded case-control study results showed that the expression of miR-27a-3p, miR-29b-3p and miR-195-5p was increased significantly. Moreover, the level of miR-27a is higher in patients with wet AMD compared to patients with dry AMD. All 3 miRNAs showed a potential diagnostic value for AMD., Conclusion: Circulating miRNA levels were significantly varied in AMD patients. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of CM082 on the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in a laser-induced CNV rat model and to determine the drug concentration in the ocular tissues. After the laser-induced CNV model was established in rats, CM082 was orally administered. The effects of CM082 on the CNV lesions were assessed using fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), CNV histology, and retinal pigment epithelium- (RPE-) choroid-sclera eyecup analysis. The concentrations of CM082 in the plasma and eye tissues were determined using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Results of FFA, histology, and RPE-choroid-sclera eyecup analysis demonstrated that the CM082-treated (10 mg/kg/d or 30 mg/kg/d) rats exhibited significantly less neovascularization than did the control group. The total concentration of CM082 in the eyes (172.86 ± 57.11 ng/g) was similar to that in the plasma (196.87 ± 73.13 ng/ml). Within the eye, the concentrations of CM082 and its metabolites were highest in the retina-sclera. The orally administered CM082 thus effectively passed through the blood-retina barrier (BRB) to reach the retina in the Brown Norway rats. Therefore, at both 10 mg/kg/d and 30 mg/kg/d, CM082 was able to reduce CNV lesions in the laser-induced CNV rat model.

Background: To evaluate the effect of bradykinin (BK) on TGF-β1-induced retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell proliferation and extracellular matrix secretion and to elucidate the relationship between BK and the Erk/Akt signaling pathway., Methods: The effects of BK on TGF-β1-induced RPE cell proliferation were examined via CCK-8 assay. Cell culture supernatant collagen I concentrations were measured via ELISA. Fibronectin (Fn), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 mRNA and protein expression levels were measured via q-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Changes in Akt/Erk phosphorylation induced by BK and HOE-140 were evaluated via Western blotting., Results: TGF-β1 stimulated ARPE-19 cell proliferation, which was inhibited by BK, whose effects were inhibited by HOE-140. BK inhibited TGF-β1-induced collagen I, Fn and MMP-2 secretion in RPE cells, and these effects were inhibited by HOE-140. BK also inhibited TGF-β1-induced Akt phosphorylation in RPE cells, and these effects were blocked by HOE-140. BK had no significant effect on Erk-mediated signaling., Conclusions: The findings from this study indicate that BK could be novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of PVR.

Background: To investigate the effectiveness of orthokeratology (ortho-k) in reducing the development of myopia in Chinese children with low to moderate myopia., Methods: This was a retrospective study. In the ortho-k group, there were141 subjects, and the average age was (9.43 ± 1.10) years. The average spherical equivalent refractive error (SER) was (-2.74 ± 1.15)D, with examinations performed 1, 7, 30, and 90 days and 12 months after the patients started wearing ortho-k lenses. In the control group, there were 130 subjects, and the average age was (9.37 ± 1.00) years. The average SER was (-2.88 ± 1.39)D, with examinations performed every 6 months. Axial elongation, which is an important parameter reflecting the progression of myopia, was measured at baseline from the same IOLMaster each time by the same masked examiner and was compared between the groups after 1 year. The subjects were divided into two sub-groups according to age to further study the development of myopia at different ages. An unpaired t-test, paired t-test, Chi-square test and Spearman test were performed to analyze the data., Results: After 1 year, the average axial elongation was (0.27 ± 0.17) mm in the ortho-k lens group and (0.38 ± 0.13) mm in the control group, with a significant difference between the groups (P < 0.001). Axial elongation was not correlated with SER but had a negative correlation with initial age (ortho-k group: r s = -0.309, p < 0.01; control group: r s = -0.472, p < 0.01). The percentages of individuals with fast myopic progression (axial elongation > 0.36 mm per year) were 38.0 % among younger children (7.00 to 9.40 years) and 24.3 % among older children (9.40 to 12.00 years), whereas the respective percentages were 76.5 and 12.9 % in the control group. When SER ranged from -5.0D to -6.0D, the axial elongation in the ortho-k group was 57.1 % slower than that in the control group., Conclusions: Ortho-k lenses are effective in controlling myopic progression in Chinese children, particularly in younger children and in children with higher myopia.

Background: The ocular presentation of Castleman's disease (CD)-associated paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) has rarely been reported. In this report, we describe a young patient with CD-associated PNP who had recurrent corneal ulceration in addition to cicatrizing conjunctivitis., Case Presentation: We describe a case of 23-year-old male with mucocutaneous erosion and conjunctival injection and erosion who was found to have PNP. Pelvic hyaline-vascular CD was detected and completely excised. The mucocutaneous lesions improved postoperatively. Two years after pelvic surgery, the patient gradually developed conjunctival symblepharon in both eyes and pterygium in the right eye. The patient then underwent a successful exclusion of the symblepharon, an excision of the pterygium and an amniotic membrane transplantation in the right eye. However, after 6 months, he experienced an aseptic corneal ulcer and recurrent pterygiumin the right eye. After treatment with systemic and local immunosuppressive medications, the corneal ulcer gradually healed and remained stable., Conclusion: Corneal ulceration and melting, in addition to conjunctivitis, as a complication of CD-associated PNP, can be successfully managed with systemic and local immunosuppressants.

Survival of patients with glioblastoma (GBM) remains poor, and novel treatment methods are urgently needed. In this study, we tested the effects of a combination of fasudil, a ROCK inhibitor, and clioquinol, an 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative with antimicrobial properties, on human GBM U87 cells. Combination treatment synergistically inhibited the viability of glioma cells but not mouse normal neuron HT22 cells and significantly induced mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. Moreover, the combination was also found to trigger macro-autophagy (henceforth referred to as autophagy) by increasing the expression levels of several proteins involved in the induction of autophagy. Further studies showed that 3-methyladenine (3-MA) or chloroquine (CQ), two autophagy inhibitors, abrogated the cytotoxic effects of the combination treatment as well as the autophagy. Overall, we demonstrated that fasudil and clioquinol show synergistic anti-cancer effects, providing evidence for the further development of combination therapy for GBM.

Background: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy and safety of intravitreal corticosteroid implants for macular edema., Methods: A total of 3,586 patients from previously reported randomized controlled trials were included. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.2. Summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated, employing random-effects or fixed-effects models according to between-study heterogeneity. The main outcome measures were the ORs for effects and safety of intravitreal corticosteroid implants., Results: Four eligible studies were included. Compared with the sham group, the ORs for ≥15 letter improvement of visual acuity in the high-dose and low-dose groups were 1.89 (95% CI 1.33-2.69, P=0.0004) and 1.62 (95% CI 1.10-2.41, P=0.02), respectively. The weight mean differences in central retinal thickness increases were -75.46 (95% CI -90.29, -60.63, P<0.0001) and -46.47 (95% CI -92.08, -0.86, P=0.05), respectively. However, the ORs for increased intraocular pressure in both intervention groups were higher than in the sham group, and were 11.50 (95% CI 7.24-18.28, P<0.00001) and 10.30 (95% CI 6.49-16.36, P<0.00001), respectively. The incidence of cataract was 7.25 (95% CI 5.68-9.25, P<0.00001) and 3.56 (95% CI 1.28-9.96, P=0.02) in the two intervention groups, respectively. There was no significant difference between the intervention groups except for the incidence of cataract in which the OR was 1.59 (95% CI 1.28-1.97, P<0.001)., Conclusion: Intravitreal corticosteroid implants are effective in treating macular edema. However, the efficacy is not related to corticosteroid dose.

Objective: To review the research progress of articular cartilage scaffold materials and look into the future development prospects., Methods: Recent literature about articular cartilage scaffold for tissue engineering was reviewed, and the results from experiments and clinical application about natural and synthetic scaffold materials were analyzed., Results: The design of articular cartilage scaffold for tissue engineering is vital to articular cartilage defects repair. The ideal scaffold can promote the progress of the cartilage repair, but the scaffold materials still have their limitations., Conclusion: It is necessary to pay more attention to the research of the articular cartilage scaffold, which is significant to the repair of cartilage defects in the future.

Objective: To analyze the imaging findings of ovarian thecoma and to better understand the tumor features based on aspect of computed tomography and magnetic resonance images., Methods: Nineteen ovarian thecomas confirmed by histopathologic examination were analyzed retrospectively. Image characteristics were analyzed and compared with those of the pathologic features., Results: The mean diameter of tumors was 9.6 cm. The masses were well defined (n = 17) or ill defined (n = 2) and appeared solid with cystic areas (n = 11), entirely solid (n = 4), or cystic with solid components (n = 4). On T2-weighted/spectral adiabatic inversion recovery (T2WI/SPAIR) images, 12 cases appeared isointense or slightly hyperintense. Of the 12 cases, 8 had patchy hypersignal areas. On computed tomographic images, 7 cases showed hypodensity or isodensity. All tumors exhibited mild enhancement. On pathologic examination, the tumor was composed of spindle cells with a moderate amount of cytoplasm., Conclusion: Imaging manifestations of ovarian thecoma are various and nonspecific. However, a large, well-defined mildly enhanced solid mass with cystic areas and especially isointense or slightly hyperintense on T2WI/SPAIR sequence in pelvic cavity may suggest the diagnosis of ovarian thecoma.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an unusual tumor composed of differentiated myofibroblastic spindle cells usually accompanied by numerous plasma cells and lymphocytes. IMT was originally described in the lung; occurrence in a long bone is rare. We present two examples of IMT arising in a long bone: one in the humerus and one in the femur. In both cases, imaging shows a poorly delineated osteolytic lesion with cortical bone destruction that aggressively extends into surrounding soft tissue. Histologically, the lesion is dominated by differentiated spindle cells with aprominent collagenous stroma and an inflammatory component including plasma cells and lymphocytes, and with positive immunoreactivity for anaplastic lymphoma kinase. The absence of cytologic atypia helps differentiate this lesion from malignant spindle cell tumors.

We report on 2 children with Burkitt's lymphoma accompanied by extensive extranodal involvement treated with chemotherapy and Rituximab in combination with autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (Auto-PBSCT) regimens. No obvious side effects could be seen during the Rituximab therapy. Both children achieved complete remission with no relapse after being followed up for 4.3 and 4 years, respectively. Our limited experience show that Rituximab in combination with chemotherapy and Auto-PBSCT might have better therapeutic effects on Burkitt's lymphoma of children and the side effects of Rituximab therapy is minimal and can be well tolerated.

Purpose: This study was to analyze the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with bile duct tumor thrombi, and explore their correlations to histopathology to improve the accuracy of diagnosis., Materials and Methods: 21 patients with pathologically confirmed HCC with bile duct tumor thrombi was performed with a superconducting 1.5-T MR imager within two weeks before operation. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) was performed on 18 patients. Images were retrospectively assessed for the size, location and MRI manifestations of HCC lesions and associated bile duct tumor thrombi. The differentiation of HCC lesions and the pathologic changes of bile duct tumor thrombi were retrospectively analyzed under microscope., Results: The average diameter of HCC lesions was 5.8±2.8 cm, and ≤5.0 cm in nine cases. Capsule formation was observed on MRI or pathology in 4 cases of HCC (19%). Of the 21 cases with bile duct tumor thrombi, 20 were clearly presented on MRI as cord-like or columnar masses in the bile duct with proximal cholangiectasis. The tumor thrombi showed slightly hypointense on T1WI and slightly hyperintense on T2WI. On enhanced scan, three cases of tumor thrombi, which were mainly consisted of necrotic tissue, did not show enhancement; 17 cases, which were mainly consisted of cancer cells, showed mild or moderate enhancement. On magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatogram (MRCP), 14 cases of tumor thrombi presented as filling defect in the bile duct, abrupt obstruction of the bile duct, and cholangiectasis above the obstruction; four presented as dilated intra-hepatic bile ducts with missing common bile duct. Of the 21 patients, 16 had biliary hemorrhage; three also had tumor thrombi in the portal vein. Seventeen of the 21 HCC with biliary thrombi were poorly differentiated, unencapsulated and with an invasive growth. Nineteen of 21 bile duct tumor thrombi did not invade the bile duct wall and could be easily extracted., Conclusion: MRI plays a valuable role in diagnosing HCC with bile duct tumor thrombi and identifying the extent of the thrombi; the MRI features of HCC with bile duct tumor thrombi are associated with its pathologic changes., (Copyright © 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Objective: To investigate the relation between the quantitative assessment of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and the correlation with histology and functional recovery by using the rabbit sciatic nerve crush model., Methods: In New Zealand, 32 rabbits were randomly divided into 2 groups (group A and B); all rabbits underwent crushing injury of their left sciatic nerve. In group A (n = 16), the sciatic nerves were crushed by using microvessel clamps with a strength of 3.61 kg. In group B (n = 16), the sciatic nerves were crushed with a strength of 10.50 kg. Right sciatic nerves were served as controls. Serial MRI of both hind limbs in each rabbit was performed before and at the time point of 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after crushed injury. The MRI protocol included T1-weighted spin-echo (T1WI), 3 dimension turbo spin-echo T2-weighted (3DT2WI), T2-weighted turbo spin-echo images with spectral presaturation with inversion recovery (T2WI/SPIR), balanced fast-field echo (B-FFE) and short-time inversion recovery (STIR) sequences. The coronal image of the sciatic nerve was obtained. The nerve and muscle signal ratio (SIR) on each sequence was measured. The function recovery was observed and pathological examination was performed at each time point., Results: A signal intensity increase of the distal segment of crushed sciatic nerves was found on 3DT2WI, T2WI/SPIR, B-FFE, and STIR, but not on T1WI images. Of 32 crushed nerves, 30 nerves showed high signal intensity. The correct diagnostic rate was 93.75% with false negative-positive of 6.25%. The SIR of the crushed sciatic nerve at distal portion was higher than those of the control nerves; there was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The SIR of the distal portion of crushed nerves was higher than that of the proximal nerve portion; there was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). Whereas, the SIR at proximal nerve portions of crushed nerve was similar to control nerves (P > 0.05). The SIR between group A and group B was not found statistically significantly different (P > 0.05). The SIR of crushed nerves at distal portion increased at one week after the crush injury, subsequently further increased, and reached a maximum at 2 weeks. The pathological examination revealed myelin swelling and axonal fragmentation of crushed nerve. Abduction function of injured hind limb was deficit. From 4 to 8 weeks following the crush, the SIR decreased, correspondingly, nerve regeneration was revealed on pathology including extensive Schwann cells proliferation and the immature myelin formation. The abduction function gradually recovered. There was no abnormal finding on MRI for control and sham-operated nerves., Conclusion: The SIR of injured nerve at distal portion increased on MRI. The evolution of SIR after injury was correlated with the degeneration and regeneration of nerve and the function recovery of lower extremities. Assessment of peripheral nerve injury by using SIR could reveal acute nerve injury, as well as aid in monitoring the recovery process. The pathophysiological basis for the SIR is predominantly the results of axon breakdown and myelin regeneration

S-Adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase (SAHH) regulates biomethylation and homocysteine metabolism and thus is an attractive target in drug design studies. SAHH has been shown to be a copper binding protein in vivo; however, the structure and catalytic mechanism of SAHH exclude a role for Cu2+. In the present work, we studied the mechanism of inhibition of SAHH activity by Cu2+. The experimental results showed that Cu2+ inhibited SAHH activity in a noncompetitive manner. Binding of Cu2+ to SAHH resulted in the release of NAD+ cofactors, explaining the loss of the enzymatic activity of SAHH. Further investigation by an ESR probe and computational simulation suggested that Cu2+ could bind at the central channel and interrupt the subunit interactions of SAHH, resulting in a large decrease in affinity to the NAD+ cofactor. This effect of Cu2+ resembled that of enzyme mutations at the C-terminal domain or Asp244 [Komoto, J., Huang, Y., Gomi, T., Ogawa, H., Takata, Y., Fujioka, M., and Takusagawa, F. (2000) Effects of site-directed mutagenesis on structure and function of recombinant rat liver S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase. Crystal structure of D244E mutant enzyme, J. Biol. Chem. 275, 32147-32156]. The mechanism of action of Cu2+ on SAHH suggested a possible regulative role for Cu2+ on the intracellular activity of SAHH. This could be helpful in understanding the biological effects of copper compounds and suggest a potential coupling mechanism between biomethylation and the redox states of cells.

Objective: This work was done to compare the validity of various imaging methods, e.g. ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC), and, especially, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) for extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma., Methods: Sixty-five such patients who were operated and confirmed by pathology were used. Sixty patients had been examined by US; 52 by CT; 20 by ERCP; 9 by PTC and 20 by MRCP. The results of these imaging methods were compared with those of operative and pathological findings., Results: The diagnostic accuracy rates of site location were US 81.7%, CT 84.6%, ERCP 75.0%, PTC 88.9% and MRCP 100%, respectively. The quality diagnostic accuracy rates were US 73.3%, CT 82.7%, ERCP 75.0%, PTC 88.9% and MRCP 95.0%, respectively., Conclusion: MRCP is superior to US, CT, ERCP and PTC not only in demonstrating the position but also the nature of extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma.
