Reaction of the [Ni(9)C(CO)(17)](2-) dianion with CdCl(2)2.5 H(2)O in THF affords the novel bimetallic Ni--Cd carbide carbonyl clusters [H(6-n)Ni(30)C(4)(CO)(34)(micro(5)-CdCl)(2)](n-) (n=3-6), which undergo several protonation-deprotonation equilibria in solution depending on the basicity of the solvent or upon addition of acids or bases. Although the occurrence in solution of these equilibria complicates the pertinent electrochemical studies on their electron-transfer activity, they clearly indicate that the clusters [H(6-n)Ni(30)C(4)(CO)(34)(micro(5)-CdCl)(2)](n-) (n=3-6), as well as the structurally related [H(6-n)Ni(34)C(4)(CO)(38)](n-) (n=4-6), undergo reversible or partially reversible redox processes and provide circumstantial and unambiguous evidence for the presence of hydrides for n=3, 4 and 5. Three of the [H(6-n)Ni(30)C(4)(CO)(34)(micro(5)-CdCl)(2)](n-) anions (n=4-6) have been structurally characterized in their [NMe(3)(CH(2)Ph)](4)[H(2)Ni(30)C(4)(CO)(34)(CdCl)(2)]2 COMe(2), [NEt(4)](5)[HNi(30)C(4)(CO)(34)(CdCl)(2)]2 MeCN and [NMe(4)](6)[Ni(30)C(4)(CO)(34)(CdCl)(2)]6 MeCN salts, respectively. All three anions display almost identical geometries and bonding parameters, probably because charge effects are minimized by delocalization over such a large metal carbonyl anion. Moreover, the Ni(30)C(4) core in these Ni-Cd carbide clusters is identical within experimental error to those present in the [HNi(34)C(4)(CO)(38)](5-) and [Ni(35)C(4)(CO)(39)](6-) species, suggesting that the stepwise assembly of their nickel carbide cores may represent a general pathway of growth of nickel polycarbide clusters. The fact that the [H(6-n)Ni(30)C(4)(CO)(34)(micro(5)-CdCl)(2)](n-)(n=4-6) anions display two valence electrons more than the structurally related [H(6-n)Ni(34)C(4)(CO)(38)](n-) (n=4-6) species has been rationalized by extended Hückel molecular orbital (EHMO) analysis.

The synthesis, structure and characterization of the [{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H]3- trianion in its [Cs(THF)0.33]+ and [NEt4]+ salt are reported. The title dimeric cluster has been obtained by protonation in water or in organic solvent of the [Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)]2- dianion to the hydroxo [Fe3(CO)9(micro3-OH)]- derivative and crystallization. The solid state structure of [Cs(THF)0.33]3[{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H] is based on ionic packing of [Cs(THF)0.33]+ cations and [{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H]3- trianions. The fractional formula is due to the particular packing of Cs+ cations, which are at the vertices of fused cuboctahedral and trigonal antiprismatic polyhedrons. Each cuboctahedron encapsulates a [{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H]3- trianion, whereas each trigonal antiprism encapsulates a THF molecule. The possibility that the structure of the [{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H]3- trianion could be affected by its confinement in the cuboctahedral cage of Cs+ ions and the heavy disorder of the THF molecule urged a further structural determination of the trianion with a completely different cation. The corresponding [NEt4]3[{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H] salt has been, therefore, prepared and structurally characterized. The [{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H]3- trianion displays an identical structure and almost coincident molecular parameters in both salts. Its most notable feature is represented by the unique hydrogen atom symmetrically bridging the micro3-O atoms of two different [Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)]2- molecules and displaying one of shortest O...H...O interaction so far reported in organic, inorganic and organometallic literature. The structure of [Cs(THF)]2[Fe4(CO)13], which has been obtained as a by-product of the synthesis of [Cs(THF)0.33]3[{Fe3(CO)9(micro3-O)}2H], is also briefly reported.

The synthesis, structure, spectroscopic characterization and electrical resistivity of the [EtV](2)[Fe(4)Pt(CO)(16)], [EtV][Fe(3)Pt(3)(CO)(15)].THF, [EtV][Fe(4)Au(CO)(16)](2)2.THF (EtV=1,1'-diethyl-4,4'-bipyridilium cation) and [NEt(4)](2)[Fe(4)Au(CO)(16)] is reported. The crystal structure of [EtV](2)[Fe(4)Pt(CO)(16)] is based on infinite stacks of [(EtV)(*+)](2) pi-dimers rotated by 90 degrees and isolated [Fe(4)Pt(CO)(16)](2-) ions. Within each pi-dimer, the [EtV](*+) radical ions are perfectly eclipsed and the distance between their mean planes is 3.275 A. The EPR spectrum of the solid material at room temperature clearly indicates the presence of a significantly populated triplet state of the pi-dimer, by showing signals both at Deltam=1 and Deltam=2. The solid-state structure of [EtV][Fe(3)Pt(3)(CO)(15)].THF is based on the ionic packing of [EtV](2+) and [Fe(3)Pt(3)(CO)(15)](2-) ions, inferred from a comparison of their molecular parameters with literature data. Significant electron transfer could have been expected to give [EtV](*+)[Fe(3)Pt(3)(CO)(15)](*-) on the basis of their formal redox potentials. In spite of their different stoichiometries, the structures of [EtV][Fe(4)Au(CO)(16)](2).2 THF and [NEt(4)](2)[Fe(4)Au(CO)(16)] both contain an isomer of the monoanion [Fe(4)Au(CO)(16)](-) in solution (previously characterized in the solid state as a [NMe(3)CH(2)Ph](2)[Fe(4)Au(CO)(16)]Cl mixed salt). Resistivity measurements on pellets of powdered samples of the above compounds indicate that their tetrasubstituted ammonium salts, and complex [EtV][Fe(4)Au(CO)(16)](2)2.THF, largely behave as insulators. However, the [EtV](2)[Fe(4)Pt(CO)(16)] and [EtV][Fe(3)Pt(3)(CO)(15)].THF samples respectively display resistivities 3 and 4 orders of magnitude less than those of their corresponding ammonium salts and could be classified as semiconductor materials.

Reaction of [NBu4]2[Pt9(CO)18] with the soft Lewis acid CdCl2 gives the [Pt9(CO)18(micro3-CdCl2)2]2- adduct, which self-assembles upon crystallization into a 1-D [[Pt9(CO)18(micro3-CdCl2)2]2-]infinity polymer via the formation of chloride bridges.

The magnetic behaviour of the even-electron [Ni16Pd16(CO)40]4- cluster, in its [NnBu4]+ salt, has been investigated by magnetometry and muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) spectroscopy. The susceptibility measurements show an exceptionally high magnetic moment corresponding to a total spin value J=2. This suggests a Hund filling of a quadruplet ground state, quite unique in carbonyl-metal clusters. SQUID magnetometry shows a departure from the Curie-Weiss law, for T>150 K, and strong deviation from a Brillouin behaviour of the magnetisation curves. muSR spectroscopy in zero applied field shows a temperature independent decay of the muon spin polarisation, similar to that of a purely paramagnetic system. The observed muon spin repolarisation in a moderate external longitudinal field, however, invalidates this simple picture and suggests the presence of a local anisotropy field acting on the cluster's magnetic moment. A consistent interpretation of magnetometry and muSR results implies the occurrence of an additional interaction of the cluster spin with an effective crystalline field. The inclusion of this interaction in a model Hamiltonian allows us to successfully reproduce both the susceptibility and magnetisation data.

Condensation between preformed Ni-Pt and Pt carbonyl clusters leads to the new [H(6-n)Ni(24)Pt(17)(CO)(46)](n-)(n= 5, 6) and the substitutionally Ni/Pt disordered [Ni(24)(Ni(12-x)Pt(x))Pt(20)(CO)(56)](6-) (x = 4) carbonyl clusters, the latter of which represents the highest nuclearity homoleptic carbonyl cluster anion so far reported.

The synthesis and structure, as well as the chemical and electrochemical characterisation of two new nu(3)-octahedral bimetallic clusters with the general [Ni(44-x)M(x)(CO)(48)](6-) (M = Pd, x = 8; M = Pt, x = 9) formula is reported. The [Ni(35)Pt(9)(CO)(48)](6-) cluster was obtained in reasonable yields (56 % based on Pt) by reaction of [Ni(6)(CO)(12)](2-) with 1.1 equivalents of Pt(II) complexes, in ethyl acetate or THF as the solvent. The [Ni(36)Pd(8)(CO)(48)](6-) cluster was obtained from the related reaction with Pd(II) salts in THF, and was isolated only in low yields (5-10 % based on Pd), mainly because of insufficient differential solubility of its salts. The unit cell of the [NBu(4)](6)[Ni(35)Pt(9)(CO)(48)] salt contains a substitutionally Ni-Pt disordered [Ni(24)(Ni(14-x)Pt(x))Pt(6)(CO)(48)](6-) (x = 3) hexaanion. A combination of crystal and molecular disorder is necessary to explain the disordering observed for the Ni/Pt sites. The unit cell of the corresponding [Ni(36)Pd(8)(CO)(48)](6-) salt contains two independent [Ni(30)(Ni(8-x)Pd(x))Pd(6)(CO)(48)](6-) (x = 2) hexaanions. The two display similar substitutional Ni-Pd disorder, which probably arises only from crystal disorder. The structure of [Ni(36)Pd(8)(CO)(48)](6-) establishes the first similarity between the chemistry of Ni-Pd and Ni-Pt carbonyl clusters. A comparison of the chemical and electrochemical properties of [Ni(35)Pt(9)(CO)(48)](6-) with those of the related [Ni(38)Pt(6)(CO)(48)](6-) cluster shows that surface colouring of the latter with Pt atoms decreases redox as well as protonation propensity of the cluster. In contrast, substitution of all internal Pt and two surface Ni with Pd atoms preserves the protonation behaviour and is only detrimental with respect to its redox aptitude. A qualitative rationalisation of the different surface-site selectivity of Pt and Pd, based on distinctive interplays of M--M and M--CO bond energies, is suggested.

A fully encapsulated Pt 4 tetrahedron in an incomplete tetrahedron of 36 nickel atoms is present in [Ni 36 Pt 4 (CO) 45 ] 6- (1; see picture for the metal framework), which is obtained as an inseparable mixture with [Ni 37 Pt 4 (CO) 46 ] 6- (2) by reaction of [Ni 6 (CO) 12 ] 2- with K 2 [PtCl 4 ]. The trimethylbenzylammonium salts of 1 and 2 cocrystallize in a 1:1 ratio. The additional Ni atom of 2 caps the truncated vertex of 1., (© 1999 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH, Weinheim, Fed. Rep. of Germany.)
