Transport, mechanical and global migration data concern multilayer food packaging films with different layouts, all incorporating a layered silicate/polyamide nanocomposite as oxygen barrier layer, and a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as moisture resistant layer in direct contact with food. The data are related to "Tuning of co-extrusion processing conditions and film layout to optimize the performances of PA/PE multilayer nanocomposite films for food packaging" by Garofalo et al. (2017) [1]. Nanocomposite multilayer films, with different relative layer thicknesses and clay types, were produced using a laboratory scale co-extrusion blown-film equipment and were analyzed in terms of transport to oxygen and water vapor, mechanical properties and overall migration. The results have shown that all the multilayer hybrid films, based on the copolyamide layer filled with Cloisite 30B, displayed the most significant oxygen barrier improvements and the best mechanical properties compared to the unfilled films. No significant alteration of the overall migration values was observed, as expectable [2], [3], [4]. The performance improvement was more relevant in the case of the film with the thinner nanocomposite layer.

Creating a bioactive surface is important in tissue engineering. Inspired by the natural calcium binding property of casein (CA), multilayer films ((CA/CS)n) with chitosan (CS) as polycation were fabricated to enhance biomineralization, cell adhesion and differentiation. LBL self-assembly technique was used and the assembly process was intensively studied based on changes of UV absorbance, zeta potential and water contact angle. The increasing content of chitosan and casein with bilayers was further confirmed with XPS and TOF-SIMS analysis. To improve the biocompatibility, gelatin was surface grafted. In vitro mineralization test demonstrated that multilayer films had more hydroxyapatite crystal deposition. Human mesenchymal stem cells (HMSCs) were seeded onto these films. According to fluorescein diacetate (FDA) and cell cytoskeleton staining, MTT assay, expression of osteogenic marker genes, ALP activity, and calcium deposition quantification, it was found that these multilayer films significantly promoted HMSCs attachment, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation than TCPS control., (Copyright © 2016. The differential swelling and bending of multilayer polymeric films due to the dissimilar uptake of volatile organic compounds (VOCs; n-hexane, limonene) in the different layers was studied. Motions of thin polyethylene films triggered by the penetrant were investigated to learn more about how their deformation is related to VOC absorption. Single layers of metallocene or low-density polyethylene, and multilayers (2-288 layers) of these in alternating positions were considered. Single-, 24-, and 288-layer films displayed no motion when uniformly subjected to VOCs, but they could display simple curving modes when only one side of the film was wetted with a liquid VOC. Two-layer films displayed simple bending when uniformly subjected to VOCs due to the different swelling in the two layers, but when the VOC was applied to only one side of the film, more complex modes of motion as well as dynamic oscillations were observed (e.g., constant amplitude wagging at 2 Hz for ca. 50 s until all the VOC had evaporated). Diffusion modeling was used to study the transport behavior of VOCs inside the films and the different bending modes. Finally a prototype VOC sensor was developed, where the reproducible curving of the two-layer film was calibrated with n-hexane. The sensor is simple, cost-efficient, and nondestructive and requires no electricity.

To improve the catalytic activity and reduce the dosage of noble metal catalysts has attracted much more attention for organic synthetic chemists. We facilely fabricated multilayer films of PEI-(PdCl2/1)n through layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method (PEI=polyethylenmine, 1=2,2',7,7'-tetra(4-pyridyl)-9,9'-spirobifluorene, psf). UV-vis spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to monitor the growth of multilayer films. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the palladium and ligand 1 were deposited on the film. The PEI-(PdCl2/1)n multilayer films were used as the cisterns of catalysts to gradually discharge high active catalytic moieties in the Suzuki-Miyaura, Heck and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. The Pd-loading was as low as 12.1×10(-6)mol% measured by inductively coupled plasma OES spectrometer (ICP), and gave high yields in the typical reactions of bromobenzenes with phenylboronic acids. Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) thin film composed of weak polyelectrolytes was designed by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) for multi-drug delivery applications. Environmental stimuli such as pH and ionic strength showed significant influence in changing the film morphology from pore-free smooth structure to porous structure and favored triggered release of loaded molecules. The film was successfully loaded with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CH) by modulating the porous polymeric network of the film. Release studies showed that the amount of release could be easily controlled by changing the environmental conditions such as pH and ionic strength. Sustained release of loaded molecules was observed up to 8h. The fabricated films were found to be biocompatible with epithelial cells during in-vitro cell culture studies. PEM film reported here not only has the potential to be used as self-responding thin film platform for transdermal drug delivery, but also has the potential for further development in antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory coatings on implants and drug-releasing coatings for stents., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Cell backpacks, or micron-scale patches of a few hundred nanometers in thickness fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, are potentially useful vehicles for targeted drug delivery on the cellular level. In this work, echogenic liposomes (ELIPs) containing the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) are embedded into backpacks through electrostatic interactions and LbL assembly. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAH/PAA)n , and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)/poly(styrene sulfonate) (PDAC/SPS)n film systems show the greatest ELIP incorporation of the films studied while maintaining the structural integrity of the vesicles. The use of ELIPs for drug encapsulation into backpacks facilitates up to three times greater DOX loading compared to backpacks without ELIPs. Cytotoxicity studies reveal that monocyte backpack conjugates remain viable even after 72 h, demonstrating promise as drug delivery vehicles. Because artificial vesicles can load many different types of drugs, ELIP containing backpacks offer a unique versatility for broadening the range of possible applications for cell backpacks., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A new azido functionalized 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) has been synthesized to achieve spectral complementarity to a Zn(II) tetraphenylethynyl porphyrin (ZnTPEP). Mixed multilayer films were assembled on glass and quartz up to 10 bilayers thick in a layer-by-layer (LbL) fabrication process using copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) to couple these two dyes together with a tris-azido linker. By varying the amount of BODIPY in the CuAAC reaction solutions for the azido linker layers, we achieve tunable doping of BODIPY within the porphyrin films. We are able to demonstrate linear film growth and determine thickness by X-ray reflectivity (XRR). XRR data indicated that lower BODIPY loading leads to higher porphyrin content and slightly thicker films. Fluorescence emission and excitation spectra of the mixed multilayer films show efficient quenching of the BODIPY singlet and enhanced ZnTPEP emission, suggesting efficient energy transfer (EnT). The ease of fabrication and tunability of these films may serve as potential light harvesting arrays for molecular-based solar cells.

The development of a sustainable membrane surface based on chitosan/poly(acrylic acid) (CHI/PAA) multilayers suitable for applications in analytical separations is reported here. Bilayers are constructed on polyamide microfiltration membranes at a pH combination of 3/3 (CHI pH/PAA pH) through a layer by layer approach. A 12.5 bilayer yielded a thickness of 400 nm. Low pressure (10 psi) filtrations through a 5.5 bilayered membrane exhibited high flux (7 m(3) m(-2) day(-1)) and selectivity (NaCl/reactive black 5 (RB5) selectivity >8000). The selectivity and flux observed here are the highest reported to date for low pressure filtrations through membranes. The increase in flux with increasing feed salt concentration is correlated with morphological transformations. Salt content above 7500 ppm causes some perturbation of surface layers. The presence of RB5, a model dye in the feed, restores the surface to maintain sustainability. A skin layer as thin as 50 nm imparts a large separation window. An RB5 feed concentration of 500 ppm results in 98.64% rejection with a flux of 25.79 m(3) m(-2) day(-1). The increase in flux with feed dye concentration supports the plasticizing action of RB5. The transport studies with large feed dye concentrations indicate that at a dye concentration of 500 ppm, the linear growing region (pre-exponential, 5.5 bilayer) itself provides a separation window similar to that of 100 ppm. At the same time, 1000 ppm requires a 9.5 bilayer that falls in the nonlinear growing region. Scanning electron microscopy images show the increase in porosity with respect to feed dye. Interesting morphologies that show the sustainable nature of the membrane surfaces along with the transport data of RB5 are presented.

Hematogenous metastatic spread causes most cancer patient deaths. Because circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are highly relevant to early metastatic spread, the capture or detection of these cells provides a diagnostic tool for patients with metastatic conditions. Herein, we demonstrate a programmable electroactive multilayered material platform with a smart electrically induced "switch" that captures CTCs from biological plasma with high efficiency and releases the captured cells flexibly. The released cells are still viable and proliferative, which facilitates the detection of trace levels of CTCs by amplification. Furthermore, the inherent rough characteristics of the nanoparticle-composed interface can promote capture efficiency and cell purification by integration with a simple microfluidic device. This elegant, inexpensive, and versatile platform for cell sorting and enrichment makes subsequent molecular and cell biological analysis achievable. The strategy has broad implications for favoring fundamental cancer biology research, for the diagnosis and monitoring of cancer individually, and for advanced intervention based on blood purification.

Abstract: Photoluminescence property of the nanoparticles synthesized by laser annealing of Si nanoparticles and C60 thin films, which were fabricated by pulsed laser ablation, was investigated. C60 thin films were deposited on two types of substrates, which were Si (p-type 111) and sapphire (R-plane). The C60 thin films were verified to have a far smoother surface than that of films produced by the conventional evaporation method. The roughness of the C60 thin film was about 0.38nm of RMS. Then Si nanoparticles were fabricated on the C60 thin film. The Si nanoparticles deposited at He pressure of 0.2Torr were about 60Å in height. We observed a green photoluminescence spectrum from the Si/C60 multilayer films after laser annealing. Raman data revealed that this green photoluminescence was generated from the Si1− x C x particles, which were produced in the reaction of the Si nanoparticles with the C60 via laser annealing. Abstract: Nanostructure controlled electrochromic (EC) multilayer films were assembled by the layer-by-layer (LBL) technique using poly(aniline-N-butylsulfonate)s (PANBUS) as polyanion, and vinyl benzyl dimethyl alkyl ammonium-chloride (VBDA) and polyaniline as the counter cation. The building up of such multilayer films on an indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrate was characterized by the increment of the absorbance through UV–Vis spectroscopy and layer thickness. Electrochromic response was highly dependent on the alkylchain length of VBDA. Higher color contrast was observed when the EC film was prepared from the VBDA having a shorter alkylchain length. An all-solid-state EC display showed EC response at 3V within 5s with a stable memory effect. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In a marine environment, specific proteins are secreted by mussels and used as a bioglue to stick to a surface. These mussel proteins present an unusual amino acid 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (known as DOPA). The outstanding adhesive properties of these materials in the sea harsh conditions have been attributed to the presence of the catechol groups present in DOPA. Inspired by the structure and composition of these adhesive proteins, dopamine-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-DN) prepared by carbodiimide chemistry is used to form thin and surface-adherent dopamine films. This conjugate was characterized by distinct techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Multilayer films are developed based on chitosan and HA-DN to form polymeric coatings using the layer-by-layer methodology. The nanostructured films formation is monitored by quartz crystal microbalance. The film surface is characterized by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Water contact angle measurements are also conducted. The adhesion properties are analyzed showing that the nanostructured films with dopamine promote an improved adhesion. In vitro tests show an enhanced cell adhesion, proliferation and viability for the biomimetic films with catechol groups, demonstrating their potential to be used in distinct biomedical applications., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Rapid differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) into confluent mature endothelial cells is important in tissue engineering for the design of autologous, nonthrombotic, vascular grafts. A new method based on EPC culture on poly(sodium-4- styrene-sulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride), that is, polyelectrolyte-multilayer-coated substrates, reduces the time from two months to two weeks., (Copyright © 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A high-resolution hard x-ray microscope is described. This system is capable of detecting line features as small as 0.6 µ m in width, and resolving line pairs 1.2- µ m wide and 1.2- µ m apart. Three types of two-dimensional image detectors are discussed and compared for use with hard x rays in high resolution. Principles of x-ray image magnification are discussed based on x-ray optics and diffraction physics. Examples of applications are shown in microradiography with fiber reinforced composite materials (SiC in Ti 3 Al Nb) and in diffraction imaging (topography) with device patterns on a silicon single crystal. High-resolution tomography has now become a reality.
