301. The response of the Tore Supra edge plasma to supersonic pulsed gas injection

Abstract: Abstract: The response of the scrape-off layer (SOL) to supersonic pulsed gas injection (SPGI) in Tore Supra is measured by a reciprocating Mach probe. The edge density increases abruptly following injection and decays to its pre-injection value in about 10ms. The edge temperature falls to 5–10eV range. The perturbation appears to be toroidally symmetric. The density increase depends on the injected amount of deuterium gas, but the temperature decrease does not. The parallel Mach number changes during the density spike; the sign of the change depends on the poloidal location of the injection nozzle. We use a simple one-dimensional fluid model for the SOL to interpret the measurements. The Mach number change lasts about 10ms as well, indicating the existence of a poloidally localized ionization source in the vicinity of the nozzle. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Abstract: The energy transfer between perpendicular flows and turbulence has been investigated in the JET plasma boundary region. The energy transfer from DC flows to turbulence, directly related with the momentum flux (e.g. ) and the radial gradient in the flow, can be both positive and negative in the proximity of sheared flows. The direct computation of the turbulent viscosity gives values comparable to the anomalous particle diffusivitiy (in the order of 1m2/s). Furthermore, this energy transfer rate is comparable with the mean flow kinetic energy normalized to the correlation time of turbulence, implying that this energy transfer is significant. These results show, for the first time, the dual role of turbulence as a damping (eddy viscosity) and driving of flows in fusion plasmas emphasizing the important role of turbulence to understand perpendicular dynamics in the plasma boundary region of fusion plasmas. Abstract: Electrostatic drift turbulence of the edge plasma in the CASTOR tokamak is studied numerically by using the Hasegawa-Wakatani equations. The fluctuations of plasma density and potential as well as the corresponding fluctuation-induced particle flux are calculated for regimes with various plasma poloidal flows. Abstract: The plasma diagnostic and control (D&C) system for a future tokamak demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO) will have to provide reliable operation near technical and physics limits, while its front-end components will be subject to strong adverse effects within the nuclear and high temperature plasma environment. The ongoing developments for the ITER D&C system represent an important starting point for progressing towards DEMO. Requirements for detailed exploration of physics are however pushing the ITER diagnostic design towards using sophisticated methods and aiming for large spatial coverage and high signal intensities, so that many front-end components have to be mounted in forward positions. In many cases this results in a rapid aging of diagnostic components, so that additional measures like protection shutters, plasma based mirror cleaning or modular approaches for frequent maintenance and exchange are being developed. Under the even stronger fluences of plasma particles, neutron/gamma and radiation loads on DEMO, durable and reliable signals for plasma control can only be obtained by selecting diagnostic methods with regard to their robustness, and retracting vulnerable front-end components into protected locations. Based on this approach, an initial DEMO D&C concept is presented, which covers all major control issues by signals to be derived from at least two different diagnostic methods (risk mitigation).

Abstract: • Control systems design for new COMPASS-U tokamak. • Real time plasma control system with short control loop period and minimized delays. • MARTe2, EPICS and React Automation studio will be used on COMPASS-U tokamak. The COMPASS-U tokamak is an advanced and more complicated successor of the COMPASS tokamak. Almost all main technological parts will be different. Both the higher performance of COMPASS-U and the increased number of parts and systems lead to a higher risk of failure. Therefore, new control systems must be developed regarding handling dangerous situations and integrating new systems. The COMPASS-U also opens the opportunity to make significant changes in the current systems based on the experience gained from COMPASS operation and to upgrade the systems to nowadays technologies. This article focuses on the conceptual design of the COMPASS-U control systems. It shows all CODAC (Control, Data Access, and Communication) systems their purpose, functionality, operation principle, interaction, and main used technologies. The COMPASS-U will use EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) for Slow control and supervision system. The real-time plasma control system will utilize MARTe2 (Multi-threaded Application Real-Time executor). Abstract: Power handling experiments with a special liquid metal divertor module based on the capillary porous system technology were performed in the tokamak COMPASS. The performance of two metals (Li and LiSn alloy) were tested for the first time in a divertor under ELMy H-mode conditions. No damage of the capillary mesh and a good exhaust capability were observed for both metals in two separate experiments with up to 12 MW/m(2) of deposited perpendicular, inter-ELM steady-state heat flux and with ELMs of relative energy similar to 3% and a local peak energy fluence at the module similar to 15 kJ.m(-2). No droplets were directly ejected from the mesh top surface and for the LiSn experiment, no contamination of the core and SOL plasmas by Sn was observed. The elemental depth profile analysis of 14 stainless-steel samples located around the vacuum vessel for each experiment provides information about the migration of evaporated/redeposited liquid elements.

308. Conceptual design of tomographic soft X-ray detectors for COMPASS-U tokamak.

Abstract: The COMPASS-U tokamak is designed at IPP CAS Prague. It will be a compact device that should achieve high toroidal magnetic field and high wall temperatures. In order to observe fast phenomena, photodiode arrays combined with beryllium filters and a pinhole are planned to be used as Soft X-Ray (SXR) detectors. Operational temperatures of photodiodes are typically below 100 °C and planned first wall temperatures as high as 500 °C for the later phases of operation. Therefore, an actively cooled support structure housing the detector has to be designed. Moreover, in order to obtain good inversion results the layout of tomographic diagnostics systems have to be optimised to provide the best possible coverage of the plasma. The proposed SXR system consists of two sets of detectors with different filter thickness enabling the use of the two filter method for electron temperature estimation. Both sets will share the same line of sight layout for better comparability. Optimisation of this layout is adapted for limited options of detector placement and extensive testing of tomography capabilities is performed. 309. Real-time plasma position reflectometry system development and integration on COMPASS tokamak.

Abstract: O-mode frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) reflectometry provides an alternative to magnetic measurements in the determination of the plasma separatrix position for plasma position control. This type of measurement proves to be particularly attractive for the control of future fusion reactors where the harsh radiation environment may damage magnetic probes or induce non-compensable measurement drifts. Plasma position reflectometry (PPR), first demonstrated in ASDEX-Upgrade, is a control technique that is increasingly important to validate in diversified experimental devices and relevant plasma regimes. The COMPASS tokamak provides suitable conditions for such advanced demonstrations and regular PPR operation and development, thanks to its O-mode reflectometer and Multi-Threaded Application Real-Time executor (MARTe) based real-time control system. Herein we present the integration of a PPR system on COMPASS, both at hardware and software levels. Reflectometry swept measurements require signals to be acquired in bursts of data and streamed to the corresponding MARTe-PPR node through PCIe ® fibre-optic links. The data transferred in real-time is used to reconstruct the radial density profiles from which the outer separatrix position is estimated. This estimate is then delivered to the central MARTe controller node via a dedicated Xilinx ® Aurora ® link at a rate matching COMPASS's 500 μ s slow control cycle. The implemented system systematically met the required latency specifications, being able to deliver an estimation of the plasma radial position capable of successfully replacing the corresponding magnetic measurements in the plasma position feedback control loops. Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract: A novel probe and approach to the direct measurements of the plasma potential in a strong magnetic field is suggested. The principle of this method is to reduce the electron saturation current to the same magnitude as that of the ion saturation current. In this case, the floating potential of the probe becomes indentical to the plasma potential. This goal is attained by a shield, which screens off an adjustable part of the electron current from the probe collector due to the much smaller gyro-radius of the electrons. First systematic measurements have been perfomred in the CASTOR tokamak.

Abstract: The plasma potential Φpl and its fluctuations Φpl were measured by electron emissive probes in the edge plasma regions of two fusion experiments: the Instituto Superior Tecnico Tokamak (ISTTOK) (Lisbon, Portugal), and the Czech Academy of Sciences Torus (CASTOR) tokamak (Prague, Czech Republic). Into ISTTOK, three emissive probes were inserted outside the last closed flux surface (LCFS) on different minor radii. In CASTOR, two emissive probes, poloidally separated, and two cold cylindrical probes, mounted on the same shaft, were used, which could be radially shifted outside and inside the LCFS. The advantages of a sufficiently emissive probe are that in principle Φpl and Φpl can be measured directly, without being affected by electron temperature fluctuations or drifting electrons.

Abstract: We have developed tunnel probes for localized measurements of the electron and ion temperature in the edge plasma region of smaller tokamaks and stellarators. A normal tunnel probe for Te measurements consists of a metallic tunnel of 5 mm diameter and 5 mm length, with the axis parallel to the magnetic field. One side is open, the other side is closed by a metallic backplate, isolated from the tunnel. If both electrodes are biased negatively, ions flow into the office, and their current is distributed between the tunnel and the backplate. The ratio of the two ion currents is a function of T e. With an additional diaphragm in front of the orifice, the probe becomes ion sensitive, since the electrons are prevented from the tunnel because of their smaller gyroradius, but ions can still reach it. In this way, the perpendicular ion temperature can be derived. By segmenting the tunnel axially into two parts, also an approximate measure for the parallel ion temperature can be found.

Abstract: In this paper, the propagation of turbulent events along radial and poloidal probe arrays in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the tokamak CASTOR [M. Hron, Czech. J. Phys. 49, 181 (1999)] is observed using a novel correlation technique. The typical turbulent structures appear as dipoles on the floating potential signals and as positive bursts on the density. It is found that both dipoles and density bursts propagate over long radial distances in the SOL while propagating poloidally. A comparison of the measured velocities of the potential and density fluctuations shows that the density structures move radially faster than the potential ones. This allows us to understand how the density is convected by the turbulence. The density moves radially along the potential valleys created by the poloidal dipoles without modifying them. In the framework of an interchange turbulence, this property indicates that charge exchange collisions with neutrals in the SOL of CASTOR lead to a high viscosity that damps the zonal flows. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: A novel approach to the direct measurement of the plasma potential in magnetized plasmas, using the so-called "ball-pen probe", was recently tested in the CASTOR tokamak. Comparison with the standard technique of plasma potential measurement using the emissive probe is reported. It is found that the plasma potential determined by the emissive probe is systematically lower than that measured by the ball-pen probe. The difference is of the of the of kT e/e. A possible reason of this difference is the space charge occurring in the proximity of the emissive probe.

Abstract: Understanding of the scrape-off layer (SOL) physics in tokamaks requires diagnostics with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution. This contribution describes results of experiments performed in the SOL of the CASTOR tokamak (R=40 cm, a = 6 cm) by means of a ring of 124 Langmuir probes surrounding the whole poloidal cross section. The individual probes measure either the ion saturation current of the floating potential with the spatial resolution up to 3 mm. Experiments are performed in a particular magnetic configuration, characterized by a long parallel connection length in the SOL, L_par ~q2piR. We report on measurements in discharges, where the edge electric field is modified by inserting a biased electrode into the edge plasma. In particular, a complex picture is observed, if the biased electrode is located inside the SOL. The poloidal distribution of the floating potential appears to be strongly non-uniform at biasing. The peaks of potential are observed at particular poloidal angles. This is interpreted as formation of a biased flux tube, which emanates from the electrode along the magnetic field lines and snakes q times around the torus. The resulting electric field in the SOL is 2-dimensional, having the radial as well as the poloidal component. It is demonstrated that the poloidal electric field E_pol convects the edge plasma radially due to the E_pol x B_T drift either inward or outward depending on its sign. The convective particle flux is by two orders of magnitude larger than the fluctuation-induced one and consequently dominates.

Abstract: In this paper we present the first experimental results obtained in the CASTOR tokamak by using a segmented biasing electrode, which is composed of five segments radially separated by 3 mm. The basic idea of choosing such configuration was to allow a spatial distribution of the biasing voltage in the radial direction. In the described experiments, one or more selected segments can be biased up to +300 V, while the remaining segments can be either grounded or floating. Two rake probes measure the edge radial profiles of the floating potential and the ion saturation current at the top and low field side of the torus. A Gundestrup probe, located at the top of the torus, measures the parallel and perpendicular Mach numbers together with the local electron temperature and density. A clear and reproducible transition to a regime with improved particle confinement is routinely observed, if the electrode is inserted deep enough into the plasma (r/a approximate to 0.5) and if one or two segments are biased up to +250 V (the remaining segments are floating) The steepening of the radial profiles of the plasma density and potential demonstrate the formation of a transport barrier just inside the last closed flux surface. Fast relaxations of the edge profiles, with a frequency of about 10 kHz or higher, are observed when the value of the average radial electric field within the barrier reaches values of about 20 kV/m and the density gradient increases up to a factor 3 with respect to the ohmic phase. A detailed analysis of the spatial-temporal behavior of these relaxations is presented.

Abstract: Localised ion temperature measurements can only be performed with special electric probes where the electron component of the current is kept off from the collector. In a strong magnetic field the effect can be utilised that the electron gyro-radius is much smaller than that of the ions. This method was developed by Katsumata and Okazaki (Japan J. Appl. Phys. 6, 123 (1967)). We have used a so-called tunnel probe (which consists of a conductive tunnel, terminated by an isolated back plate) by adding a diaphragm in front. Thereby the tunnel is prevented from incident electrons at any potential of both electrodes. By sweeping the potential across the tunnel, the perpendicular ion temperature can be inferred. By segmenting the tunnel axially in two parts also the parallel ion temperature can be determined. When the electrodes are biased to ion saturation, the ratio between the ion currents, which reach the first and the second segment, respectively, is a measure for the parallel ion temperature. The dependence of the ratio of the currents has to be determined by a PIC simulation.

Abstract: A two-dimensional array of electric probes placed on the poloidal plane has been inserted in the edge region of the CASTOR tokamak. The floating potential patterns measured by the probes show the presence of localized structures which are convected poloidally by the E × B plasma motion. The lifetime of these structures has been found to be large enough to allow them to complete several full poloidal rotations before dying away. Furthermore, the eddy turnover time of the plasma around the potential blobs is smaller than the lifetime, so that these structures can be called coherent.

Abstract: Experiments in the tokamaks TEXTOR, CASTOR, T-10 and ISTTOK, as well as in the reversed field pinch RFX have provided new and complementary evidence on the physics of the universal mechanism of E × B velocity shear stabilization of turbulence, concomitant transport barrier formation and radial conductivity by using various edge biasing techniques. In TEXTOR the causality between transport reduction and induced electric fields in the edge has been for the first time clearly demonstrated. The high electric field gradients have been identified as the cause for the quenching of turbulent cells. A quantitative analysis of the measured transport reduction is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The scaling of plasma turbulence suppression with velocity shear has been established, revealing the density-potential cross-phase as a key element. Reduction in poloidal electric field, temperature, and density fluctuations across the shear layer lead to a reduction of the anomalous conducted and convected heat fluxes resulting in an energy transport barrier that is measured directly. In CASTOR the biasing electrode is placed at the separatrix in a non-intrusive configuration which has demonstrated strongly sheared electric fields and consequent improvement of the global particle confinement, as predicted by theory. The impact of sheared E × B flow on edge turbulent structures has been measured directly using a comprehensive set of electrostatic probe arrays as well as emissive probes. Measurements with a full poloidal Langmuir probe array have revealed quasi-coherent electrostatic waves in the SOL with a dominant mode number equal to the edge safety factor. In T-10 edge biasing is clearly improving the global performance of ECR heated discharges. Reflectometry and heavy ion beam probe measurements show the existence of a narrow plasma layer with strong suppression of turbulence. On ISTTOK, the influence of alternating positive and negative electrode and (non-intrusive) limiter biasing has been compared. Electrode biasing is found to be more efficient in modifying the radial electric field Er and confinement, limiter biasing acting mainly on the SOL. In the RFX reversed field pinch it has been demonstrated that also in RFPs biasing can increase the local E × B velocity shear in the edge region, and hence substantially reduce the local turbulence driven particle flux mainly due to a change in the relative phase between potential and density fluctuations.

Abstract: Two small liquid metal targets based on the capillary porous structure were exposed to the divertor plasma of the tokamak COMPASS. The first target was wetted by pure lithium and the second one by a lithium-tin alloy, both releasing mainly lithium atoms (sputtering and evaporation) when exposed to plasma. Due to poorly conductive target material and steep surface inclination (implying the surface-perpendicular plasma heat flux 12-17 MW/m(2)) for 0.1-0.2 s, the LiSn target has reached 900 degrees C under ELMy H-mode. A model of heat conduction is developed and serves to evaluate the lithium sputtering and evaporation and, thus, the surface cooling by the released lithium and consequent radiative shielding. In these conditions, cooling of the surface by the latent heat of vapor did not exceed 1 MW/m(2). About 10(19) lithium atoms were evaporated (comparable to the COMPASS 1 m(3) plasma deuterium content), local Li pressure exceeded the deuterium plasma pressure. Since the radiating Li vapor cloud spreads over a sphere much larger than the hot spot, its cooling effect is negligible (0.2 MW/m(2)). We also predict zero lithium prompt redeposition, consistent with our observation.Y

333. Observation and evaluation of the alignment of Thomson scattering systems.

Abstract: Concerning plasma diagnostics based on Thomson scattering (TS), precise adjustment and proper alignment is of great importance in order to provide reliable and accurate measurements. Any misalignment could result in an incorrectly determined plasma density or prevent the measurement with this type of diagnostic altogether. Suitable means of alignment monitoring should be integrated into each TS diagnostic system. Variations of commonly used methods are discussed in this article. Correlation of results from alignment control with performed measurements of vibrations on the COMPASS tokamak is presented. Various techniques of optimization of alignment monitoring are shown. The optimal technique, which could be accommodated during the construction of TS diagnostic systems in future fusion devices, is proposed.

334. First simultaneous measurements of Reynolds stress with ball-pen and Langmuir probes.

Abstract: A new multi-pin probe head was installed and tested at the COMPASS tokamak. The probe head consists of several ball-pen and Langmuir probes in similar geometric configurations, which enables fast, simultaneous measurements of the radial and poloidal electric field components from differences of plasma or floating potentials using appropriately positioned ball-pen or Langmuir probes, respectively. The fast measurements of the radial electric field are compared with other methods of measuring selected frequency components of the radial electric field. The radial profiles of the Reynolds stress calculated from correlations of electric field fluctuations obtained by either probe type are compared along with their spectral composition. Lower Reynolds stress values are found for Langmuir probes in comparison to ball-pen probes due to negative contributions from higher frequency fluctuations possibly associated with electron temperature fluctuations.
