Although Natural Rubber Bearings (NRBs) constitute a reliable and cost-effective conventional bearing system, they are rarely used for seismic isolation because of their low damping. There are various seismic isolation systems based on NRB, but they mostly have multiple drawbacks (cost, capacity, environmental, etc.). The U-shaped damper (UD) is an efficient energy dissipating device used in seismic-resistant design. However, no guidelines or procedures are available to understand its behaviour nor for design purposes. This paper presents an analytical and numerical investigation of the cyclic behaviour of the NRB system combined with UDs that allow to increase the systems' damping capacity and seismic performance. An analytical study of the UD is performed to predict its initial elastic parameters and numerical models are developed to study the nonlinear behaviour of the NRB-UDs, under large cyclic loadings. A set of UDs and NRBs subjected to cyclic loadings are then studied to investigate their behaviour and the effect of different geometric, loading and design parameters. Results show that the UD significantly dissipates vibration energy based on its large plastic deformations and achieves comparable and predictable performances corresponding to the in-plane and out-of-plane loading directions. Its cyclic behaviour depends on geometrical parameters and material yield stress. The developed analytical formulas provide a reliable estimation of initial elastic parameters of UD, which is essential for the selection and sizing of preliminary designs of the devices. The NRB-UDs systems show a high energy dissipation capacity with stable hysteresis behaviours in any direction. Further, the performance of these devices can be easily adjusted by varying the geometry, number and cross-section of UDs, making them an effective solution that meets a wide range of seismic isolation design requirements in high and moderate seismic areas. - Abstract
In this paper, we consider two matrix equations that involve the weighted geometric mean. We use the fixed point theorem in the cone of positive definite matrices to prove the existence of a unique positive definite solution. In addition, we study the multi-step stationary iterative method for those equations and prove the corresponding convergence. Another equations with a different matrix generalization of the weighted geometric mean for scalars are also discussed.

359. Effects of ground motion spectral shapes on the design of seismic base isolation for multi-story building according to Eurocode 8

- Abstract
Seismic isolation bearing has been considered an effective solution for constructions in earthquake areas. However, the isolator design criteria are strongly depended on the earthquake properties, especially the spectral shapes of ground motions. This paper presents the seismic responses of isolated building structures affected by earthquakes with different spectral shapes as per the specification of Eurocode 8 (EC8). The equivalent bilinear model is used for addressing the seismic behaviour of isolators. A parametric study presents a simplified estimation procedure for seismic responses of isolated structures and isolator’s properties by using the single-mode spectral analysis approach performed on an equivalent simplified model of isolated buildings. Numerical analyses are conducted on three-dimensional models of a typical multi-story building to study the impact of spectral shapes on the seismic responses and the design requirements of isolated structures. Nonlinear time-history analyses are carried out using Etabs software, where the historical seismic records used for modelling have been scaled to match the target spectrum according to EC8. The results show that the seismic spectral shapes have significant effects on the seismic demands of isolated structures and the isolator’s properties, especially the initial characteristic strength Q. The seismic performance requirements of isolators, particularly the energy dissipation capacity, for type I spectra are significantly higher than for type II spectra. Furthermore, isolators designed for type I spectra provide an over-efficient and are considered to be inappropriate for the structures located in earthquake regions with type II spectra.

This study explores the development of an energy harvesting chip (EHC) using a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process, addressing the need for efficient micro-scale energy harvesters in modern electronics. The EHC integrates a thermoelectric energy harvester (TEH) and a photovoltaic energy harvester (PEH) to maximize energy conversion efficiency. A key challenge in TEH design is enhancing power output, which is addressed by suspending the cold ends of 41 thermocouples within the TEH structure through post-processing. Experimental methods were employed to assess the performance of the TEH, revealing an output voltage of 21.4 mV and a maximum output power of 9.32 nW under a 3 K temperature difference. The TEH demonstrated a voltage factor of 8.9 mV/(mm2·K) and a power factor of 1.3 nW/(mm2·K2). The PEH was designed with novel patterned p-n junctions, integrating lightly doped n-type regions with interdigitated p-type doping to increase junction density, resulting in high conversion efficiency. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the EHC design, showcasing its potential in energy harvesting applications.

Abstract NUP155 is reported to be correlated with tumor development. However, the role of NUP155 in tumor physiology and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) has not been previously examined. This study comprehensively investigated the expression, immunological function, and prognostic significance of NUP155 in different cancer types. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that NUP155 was upregulated in 26 types of cancer. Additionally, NUP155 upregulation was strongly correlated with advanced pathological or clinical stages and poor prognosis in several cancers. Furthermore, NUP155 was significantly and positively correlated with DNA methylation, tumor mutational burden, microsatellite instability, and stemness score in most cancers. Additionally, NUP155 was also found to be involved in TIME and closely associated with tumor infiltrating immune cells and immunoregulation-related genes. Functional enrichment analysis revealed a strong correlation between NUP155 and immunomodulatory pathways, especially antigen processing and presentation. The role of NUP155 in breast cancer has not been examined. This study, for the first time, demonstrated that NUP155 was upregulated in breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA) cells and revealed its oncogenic role in BRCA using molecular biology experiments. Thus, our study highlights the potential value of NUP155 as a biomarker in the assessment of prognostic prediction, tumor microenvironment and immunotherapeutic response in pan-cancer.

Objective. —To describe tobacco use in Vietnam and the impact of transnational tobacco corporations there. Desig. —In cities, a multistage cluster design; in communes, a systematic sample design, using face-to-face interviews in all sites. Setting. —Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and 2 rural communes in Vietnam. Participants. —Random samples totaling 2004 men and women aged 18 years or older. Main Outcome Measures. —Prevalence and correlates of tobacco smoking, amount and duration of smoking, age at initiation, quitting behavior, knowledge of health hazards of and attitudes toward smoking, and cigarette brand smoked, preferred, and recognized as most widely advertised. Results. —Smoking prevalence among men (n=970) was 72.8% and 4.3% among women (n=1031). Male smokers had smoked a mean of 15.5 years; the median age at initiation was 19.5 years. Among male smokers, 16% smoked non-Vietnamese cigarettes. More than twice as many (38%), however, said that they would prefer to smoke a non-Vietnamese brand if they could afford the cost. Among those who recalled any cigarette advertising (38%), 71% recalled a non-Vietnamese brand as the most commonly advertised. Male smokers who were significantly more likely to smoke non-Vietnamese brands lived in the south, were engaged in blue collar or business/service occupations, earned higher incomes, and lived in urban areas. Conclusions. —Vietnam has the highest reported male smoking prevalence rate in the world. Unless forceful steps are taken to reduce smoking among men and prevent the uptake of smoking by youth and women, Vietnam will face a tremendous health and economic burden in the near future. Implementation of a comprehensive national tobacco control campaign together with international regulation will be the keys to the eradication of the tobacco epidemic in Vietnam and throughout the developing world.
363. Comparative studies on in-plane shear behavior of masonry wallettes retrofitted with mortar, UHPC, and ECC ferrocement: Shotcrete and prefabricated panels

Masonry walls, prevalent in many historical and contemporary structures, often require retrofitting to meet modern safety and performance standards. Motivated by the need for efficient and reliable retrofitting solutions, this research investigates the potential of various types of ferrocement, reinforced with high-strength steel meshes, to enhance the in-plane shear behavior of brick masonry walls. Through rigorous diagonal compression tests on nine masonry wallettes, the study evaluated the performance of ferrocement overlays in terms of overlay configuration (asymmetric or symmetric), cementitious material type (mortar, ECC, or UHPC), the presence or absence of steel mesh, and construction method (shotcrete or prefabricated panels). The results indicated that UHPC and ECC overlays significantly enhanced post-cracking deformation capacity. Compared to the asymmetric retrofit, the symmetric retrofit led to more uniform deformation in the retrofitted wallette, effectively improving the maximum shear by up to 119 %. While UHPC shotcrete was more effective in improving the shear strength, ECC shotcrete led to the highest rupture shear strain and pseudo-ductility for the retrofitted wallette, reaching 0.83 % and 17.2, respectively. Moreover, although steel mesh inclusion in the ferrocement overlay was crucial in enhancing post-peak ductility, its impact on shear strength of the retrofitted wallettes was minimal. The test results also demonstrated that the developed prefabricated UHPC panels emerged as an effective retrofitting solution to simultaneously improve the strength, deformation capacity, and ductility for masonry wallettes. In addition to the experimental investigation, a new strength model, accounting for various key design variables, was developed, offering reliable shear strength predictions for the retrofitted wallettes.

IntroductionType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has a high incidence rate globally, increasing the burden of death, disability, and the economy worldwide. Previous studies have found that the compositions of oral and intestinal microbiota changed respectively in T2DM; whether the changes were associated or interacted between the two sites and whether there were some associations between T2DM and the ectopic colonization of oral microbiota in the gut still need to be identified.Research design and methodsWe performed a cross-sectional observational study; 183 diabetes and 74 controls were enrolled. We used high-throughput sequencing technology to detect the V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA in oral and stool samples. The Source Tracker method was used to identify the proportion of the intestinal microbiota that ectopic colonized from the oral cavity.ResultsThe oral marker bacteria of T2DM were found, such as Actinobacteria, Streptococcus, Rothia, and the intestinal marker bacteria were Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, and Blautia at the genus level. Among them, Actinobacteria and Blautia played a vital role in different symbiotic relationships of oral and intestinal microbiota. The commonly distributed bacteria, such as Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria, were found in both oral and intestine. Moreover, the relative abundance and composition of bacteria were different between the two sites. The glycine betaine degradation I pathway was the significantly up-regulated pathway in the oral and intestinal flora of T2DM. The main serum indexes related to oral and intestinal flora were inflammatory. Recycled plastic modified asphalt is an emerging topic in the road construction industry that has been studied meticulously from a physical and mechanical perspective. However, the exposure of recycled plastics to high temperatures has been a growing concern due to the possible release of toxic gases associated with burning plastics. This research investigates laboratory-generated fumes from recycled plastic modified asphalt incorporated via two different methods using four types of recycled plastic from post-industrial and post-consumer streams. Results were compared against conventional asphalt prepared using neat bitumen or commercial polymer-modified bitumen. A direct liquid injection method using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to quantify 48 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Results revealed that the incorporation of recycled plastics could effectively reduce (up to 34% VOCs and 51% PAHs) overall emissions at all working temperatures except when recycled acrylonitrile butadiene styrene was mixed at 180 °C. Further tests involving sorption analysis of plastics revealed that plastics have an adsorbent capability with a selectivity towards PAHs (compared to VOCs) and therefore further justifying that the addition of recycled plastics in asphalt can effectively limit the total emitted compounds. Abstract The eye orbit has mechanical and acoustic characteristics that determine resonant frequencies and amplify acoustic signals in certain frequency ranges. These characteristics also interfere with the acoustic amplitudes and frequencies of eyeball when measured with an acoustic tonometer. A model in which a porcine eyeball was embedded in ultrasonic conductive gel in the orbit of a model skull was used to simulate an in vivo environment, and the acoustic responses of eyeballs were detected. The triggering source was a low-power acoustic speaker contacting the occipital bone, and the detector was a high-resolution microphone with a dish detecting the acoustic signals without contacting the cornea. Dozens of ex vivo porcine eyeballs were tested at various intraocular pressure levels to detect their resonant frequencies and acoustic amplitudes in their power spectra. We confirmed that the eyeballs’ resonant frequencies were proportional to intraocular pressure, but interference from orbit effects decreased the amplitudes in these resonant frequency ranges. However, we observed that the frequency amplitudes of eyeballs were correlated with intraocular pressure in other frequency ranges. We investigated eye orbit effects and demonstrated how they interfere with the eyeball’s resonant frequencies and frequency amplitudes. These results are useful for developing advanced acoustic tonometer.

The material for the photovoltaic microgenerator is silicon, and its structure consists of patterned p–n junctions. The design of the photovoltaic microgenerator utilizes a grid-like shape, forming a large-area p–n junction with a patterned p-doping and N-well structure to enhance the photocurrent and improve the device’s performance. The photovoltaic microgenerator is fabricated employing the CMOS process with post-processing step. Post-processing is applied to enhance the microgenerator’s light absorption and energy-conversion efficiency. This involves using wet etching with buffered-oxide etch (BOE) to remove the silicon dioxide layer above the p–n junctions, allowing direct illumination of the p–n junctions. The area of the photovoltaic microgenerator is 0.79 mm2. The experimental results show that under an illumination intensity of 1000 W/m2, the photovoltaic microgenerator exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 0.53 V, a short-circuit current of 233 µA, a maximum output power of 99 µW, a fill factor of 0.8, and an energy-conversion efficiency of 12.5%.

Astronauts are always faced with serious health problems during prolonged spaceflights. Previous studies have shown that weightlessness significantly affects the physiological function of female astronauts, including a change in reproductive hormones and ovarian cells, such as granulosa and theca cells. However, the effects of microgravity on these cells have not been well characterized, especially in granulosa cells. This study aimed to investigate the effects of simulated microgravity (SMG) on the proliferation and morphology of porcine granulosa cells (pGCs). pGC proliferation from the SMG group was inhibited, demonstrated by the reduced O.D. value and cell density in the WST-1 assay and cell number counting. SMG-induced pGCs exhibited an increased ratio of cells in the G0/G1 phase and a decreased ratio of cells in the S and G2/M phase. Western blot analysis indicated a down-regulation of cyclin D1, cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (cdk4), and cyclin-dependent kinase 6 (cdk6), leading to the prevention of the G1-S transition and inducing the arrest phase. pGCs under the SMG condition showed an increase in nuclear area. This caused a reduction in nuclear shape value in pGCs under the SMG condition. SMG-induced pGCs exhibited different morphologies, including fibroblast-like shape, rhomboid shape, and pebble-like shape. These results revealed that SMG inhibited proliferation and induced morphological changes in pGCs.

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common comorbidities in community acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and mortality risk factors of COPD patients hospitalized with CAP. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and Shanghai Dahua Hospital. Clinical and demographic data in patients diagnosed with CAP were collected between January 2015 and June 2016. Logistic regression analysis was performed to screen mortality risk factors of COPD patients hospitalized with CAP. Results Of the total 520 CAP patients, 230 (44.2%) patients had been diagnosed comorbid with COPD (COPD-CAP). CAP patients comorbid with COPD patients had higher rate of need for ICU admission (18.3% vs 13.1%) and need for NIMV (26.1% vs 1.4%) than without COPD (nCOPD-CAP). The PSI, CURB-65 and APACHE-II scores in COPD-CAP patients were higher than that in nCOPD-CAP patients (95 vs 79, P 2.0 μg/mL and CURB-65 ≥ 3 were risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality ((odd ratio) OR = 5.678, OR = 4.268, OR = 20.764, respectively) in COPD-CAP patients. The risk factors associated with 60-day mortality in COPD-CAP patients were comorbid with coronary heart disease, aspiration, need for NIMV (non-invasive mechanical ventilation) and CURB-65 ≥ 3 (OR = 5.206, OR = 7.921, OR = 3.974, OR = 18.002, respectively). Conclusions COPD patients hospitalized with CAP had higher rate of need for NIMV, need for ICU admission and severity scores than those without COPD. Aspiration, D-dimer > 2.0 μg/mL, comorbid with coronary heart disease, need for NIMV and CURB-65 ≥ 3 were mortality risk factors in CAP patients comorbid with COPD.

Semiconductor single crystal ZnO nanowires have been successfully synthesized by a simple method based on thermal evaporation of ZnO powders mixed with graphite. Metallic catalysts, carrying gases, and vacuum conditions are not necessary. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the ZnO nanowires are highly crystallized and have a typical wurtzite hexagonal structure with lattice constants a = 0.3246 nm and c = 0.5203 nm. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of nanowires indicate that diameters of the ZnO nanowires normally range from 100 to 300 nm and their lengths are several tens of micrometers. Photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of the nanowires were measured in the range of temperature from 15 K to the room temperature. Photoluminescence spectra at low temperatures exhibit a group of ultraviolet (UV) narrow peaks in the region 368 nm ~ 390 nm, and a blue-green very broad peak at 500 nm. Origin of the emission lines in PL spectra and the lines in PLE spectra is discussed.

Abstract Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) offer great potential for field-effect transistors and integrated circuit applications due to their extraordinary electrical properties. To date, as-made SWCNT transistors are usually p-type in air, and it still remains challenging for realizing n-type devices. Herein, we present efficient and reversible electron doping of semiconductor-enriched single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) by firstly utilizing decamethylcobaltocene (DMC) deposited by a simple spin-coating process at room temperature as an electron donor. A n-type transistor behavior with high on current, large I on /I off ratio and excellent uniformity is obtained by surface charge transfer from the electron donor DMC to acceptor s-SWCNTs, which is further corroborated by the Raman spectra and the ab initio simulation results. The DMC dopant molecules could be reversibly removed by immersion in N, N-Dimethylformamide solvent, indicating its reversibility and providing another way to control the carrier concentration effectively as well as selective removal of surface dopants on demand. Furthermore, the n-type behaviors including threshold voltage, on current, field-effect mobility, contact resistances, etc. are well controllable by adjusting the surface doping concentration. This work paves the way to explore and obtain high-performance n-type nanotubes for future complementary CMOS circuit and system applications.

389. LL37 Inhibits Aspergillus fumigatus Infection via Directly Binding to the Fungus and Preventing Excessive Inflammation

The incidence of Aspergillus fumigatus infection and the rate of resistance to antifungal drugs have sharply increased in recent years. LL37 has been reported as a host defense peptide with broad-spectrum antibacterial activities. However, the role of LL37 during A. fumigatus infection remains unclear. Here, we examined the interaction between LL37 and A. fumigatus and found that synthetic LL37 could directly bind to the surface of A. fumigatus, disrupting the integrity of the cell wall in vitro. LL37 inhibited mycelial growth in a concentration-dependent manner, rather than fungicidal effect even at high concentration (e.g., 20 μM). Interestingly, low concentrations of LL37 (e.g., 4 μM) significantly attenuated mycelial adhesion and prevented the invasion and destruction of epithelial cells. Following LL37 treatment, the levels of proinflammatory cytokines released by A. fumigatus-stimulated macrophages decreased significantly, accompanied by downregulation of M1 type markers. In a mouse model of pulmonary A. fumigatus infection, LL37-treated mice showed lower amounts of fungi load, moderate pathological damage, and reduced proinflammatory cytokines. Further, LL37 transgenic mice (LL37+/+) were examined to investigate the effects of endogenous LL37 in an A. fumigatus infection model and showed lower susceptibility to A. fumigatus infection in comparison with wild-type mice. In addition, LL37 also played a protective role in an immunosuppressed mouse model of A. fumigatus infection. Thus, LL37 inhibits A. fumigatus infection via directly binding to mycelia and reducing excessive inflammation. LL37 or its analogs may therefore constitute potential drug components for A. fumigatus infection.

390. Engineering properties, microplastics and emissions assessment of recycled plastic modified asphalt mixtures.

The use of recycled plastic in asphalt is raising interest since contributing to increase the sustainability of roads pavements. The engineering performance of such roads are commonly assessed but scarcely correlated to the environmental impacts of incorporating recycled plastic in asphalt. This research encompasses an evaluation of the mechanical behaviour and environmental impact of introducing low melting point recycled plastics, low density polyethylene and commingled polyethylene/polypropylene, to conventional hot mix asphalt. While this investigation reveals a reduction in moisture resistance between 5 and 22 % contingent on the plastic content, the benefits include a significant 150 % enhancement in fatigue resistance and 85 % improvement in rutting resistance when compared with conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). From an environmental perspective, high-temperature asphalt production with higher plastic content resulted in decreased gaseous emissions for both types of recycled plastics up to 21 %. Further comparison studies indicate that microplastic generation from recycled plastic-modified asphalt is comparable to that from commercial polymer-modified asphalt products, long employed by the industry. Background: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in youths, possibly via 5-HT
2C , H1 receptors and serotonin transporter (SERT). SSRIs have similar affinity for SERT but variable affinity for 5-HT2C and H1 . This study assessed whether SSRIs with strong affinity for 5-HT2C and H1 (relative to SERT) were associated with T2DM risk compared with weak-affinity SSRIs., Methods: Using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, we assembled a cohort of patients aged 5-24, newly prescribed a strong-affinity SSRI (citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine) or weak affinity (paroxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine) between 1990 and 2019. We controlled for confounding using standardized mortality ratio weighting, estimated from calendar time-specific propensity scores. We used weighted Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) of incident T2DM with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: The cohort included 347,368 new users of strong-affinity SSRIs and 131,359 of weak-affinity SSRIs. Strong-affinity SSRIs were not associated with an increased T2DM risk compared with weak-affinity SSRIs (incidence rate 2.8 vs 2.7 per 1000 person-years; HR 1.03, 95 % CI 0.85-1.25). T2DM risk did not vary with duration of use, age or sex. However, the HR was numerically higher in youths with normal or low weight (HR 1.30, 95 % CI 0.85-1.98) and with prior antipsychotic use (HR 1.62, 95 % CI 0.83-3.18)., Limitations: Median duration of SSRI use, in line with real-world SSRI prescribing, was relatively short., Conclusion: T2DM risk did not differ between strong- and weak-affinity SSRIs, providing reassurance for clinicians when choosing between SSRIs in youths., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Objectives. To explore whether beneficial health care policies, when implemented in the context of gender inequality, yield unintended structural consequences that stigmatize and ostracize women with HIV from "what matters most" in local culture. Methods. We conducted 46 in-depth interviews and 5 focus groups (38 individuals) with men and women living with and without HIV in Gaborone, Botswana, in 2017. Results. Cultural imperatives to bear children bring pregnant women into contact with free antenatal services including routine HIV testing, where their HIV status is discovered before their male partners'. National HIV policies have therefore unintentionally reinforced disadvantage among women with HIV, whereby men delay or avoid testing by using their partner's status as a proxy for their own, thus facilitating blame toward women diagnosed with HIV. Gossip then defines these women as "promiscuous" and as violating the essence of womanhood. We identified cultural and structural ways to resist stigma for these women. Conclusions. Necessary HIV testing during antenatal care has inadvertently perpetuated a structural vulnerability that propagates stigma toward women. Individual- and structural-level interventions can address stigma unintentionally reinforced by health care policies.

Background: There is lack of recent information on the prescribing trends of antidepressants and coprescription with other psychotropic medications in the United Kingdom (UK) pediatric population., Methods: Using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, we estimated the annual rates of patients newly prescribed an antidepressant (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), other newer generation antidepressants, and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)) and the percentage of new users of antidepressants with a same-day coprescription for other psychotropic medications. We also estimated the prevalence of patients with antidepressant prescriptions and percentage of coprescription for other psychotropic medications., Results: After a 42% decline from 2000 to 2005, the rate of patients newly prescribed an antidepressant increased from 2006 onwards. From 2008 to 2018, the rate increased from 254.3 to 471.2 per 100,000 person-years (rate ratio 1.97, 95% confidence interval 1.96-1.99). The rate was higher in females and adolescents aged 15 to 17. SSRIs were most commonly prescribed (70% of all antidepressant prescriptions). Overall, 4.7% of patients newly prescribed an antidepressant had at least one same-day coprescription for another psychotropic medication. During the study period, coprescription rose from 2.6% to 6.4% and was more frequent in males. In 2018, most coprescriptions were anxiolytics and hypnotics (63%) and antipsychotics (26%). - Abstract
The goal of this study was to observe the pathological characteristics of atherosclerotic plaques in the aortic walls of ApoE
-/- and C57BL/6J mice and the changes of CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) in atherosclerotic mice. Twenty ApoE-/- mice were split into high-fat diet (AH) and normal diet (AN) groups and 10 C57BL/6J male mice were designated as the control group (BN). The serum concentrations of IL-10 and TGF-β1 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; paraffin sections of the aorta were stained with hematoxylin & eosin, and morphometric parameters were measured using the Image Pro Plus 6.0 system. Verhoeff stain was used to observe the distribution of elastic fibers, and immunohistochemical staining was performed to verify the phenotype of the forkhead box protein 3 (Foxp3+ ) CD25+ cells in the atherosclerotic tissue. The proportion of CD4+ CD25+ Tregs in the spleen was calculated by flow cytometry. The thickness of the intima, the intima/media ratio, the plaque area, and the plaque/lumen ratio of mice in AN group were significantly larger than those of mice in BN group. The thickness of the intima, the plaque area, and the plaque/lumen ratio of the mice in AH group were significantly increased compared with those of the AN group mice. The serum concentrations of IL-10 and TGF-β1 and the percentage of splenic CD4+ CD25+ Tregs in AN group mice were significantly decreased compared with the control group. The serum concentrations of IL-10 and TGF-β1 and the percentage of splenic CD4+ CD25+ Tregs in the mice in AH group were significantly decreased compared with those in AN group. The proportions of Foxp3+ and CD25+ cells within the total lymphocyte population were significantly decreased in AH group mice compared with those in AN group mice. Atherosclerosis in an experimental mouse model was correlated with Treg depletion in the lymphoid tissues and plaques, indicating the important antiatherosclerotic role of CD4+ CD25+ Tregs. Impact statement In this article, we conclude that Tregs decreased with atherosclerosis (AS) as determined in ApoE knockout mice fed a high fat diet. Pulse transit time (PTT) has been widely studied as an index of blood pressure (BP) changes. In recent years, some prototypes of PTT-based wearable BP measurement devices have been developed, which can relieve users from the discomfort caused by the inflating cuff used in auscultatory and oscillometric BP measurement techniques. However, in the common practice for PTT detection, multi-site sensor implementation on human body is required, making it difficult for the integration of wearable devices. Since multi-wavelength (MW) photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals carry blood pulsation information of different blood vessels embedded in different skin depths, the time difference between different wavelength PPG signals collected at the same body site can be treated as a special PTT on a short length of blood vessels beneath the skin. In this work, the time difference between MW PPG, denoted as PTT_MW, was explored to track BP changes as a substitute of infrared (IR) PTT_EP. (PTT_EP is the time interval between electrocardiogram (ECG) and IR PPG.) Ten healthy adult subjects participated in the experiment, and their continuous BP, ECG and fingertip MW PPG signals generated from blue, green, yellow and IR light were recorded after 2-minute static handgrip exercise at 33% maximal voluntary contraction. The results showed that the correlation between Systolic BP (SBP) and IR-Blue PTT_MW (|r|= 0.52) was comparable to the correlation between SBP and IR PTT_EP (|r|= 0.59). Moreover, we optimized the wavelength combination of PTT_MWs for each subject and found the average value of optimal correlation between SBP and PTT_MW reached 0.76, which was significantly (p<;0.01) higher than the correlation between IR PTT_EP and SBP. This study reveals that the time difference between MW PPG can be potentially used as PTT for cuffless BP measurement with its unique advantage in simple sensor implementation at only one body site.

Accurate and ambulatory measurement of blood pressure (BP) is essential for efficient diagnosis, management and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, traditional cuff-based BP measurement methods provide only intermittent BP readings and can cause discomfort with the occlusive cuff. Although pulse transit time (PTT) method is promising for cuffless and continuous BP measurement, its pervasive use is restricted by its limited accuracy and requirement of placing sensors on multiple body sites. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel dual-modality arterial pulse monitoring system for continuous blood pressure measurement, which simultaneously records the pressure and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals of radial artery. The obtained signals can be used to generate a pressure-volume curve, from which the elasticity index (EI) and viscosity index (VI) can be extracted. Experiments were carried out among 7 healthy subjects with their PPG, ECG, arterial pressure wave and reference BP collected to examine the effectiveness of the proposed indexes. The results of this study demonstrate that a linear regression model combining EI and VI has significantly higher BP tracking correlation coefficient as compared to the PTT method. This suggests that the proposed system and method can potentially be used for convenient and continuous blood pressure estimation with higher accuracy.

- Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by patchy or diffuse eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel wall to a variable depth and various gastrointestinal manifestations. We describe a case of severe eosinophilic gastroenteritis presenting as frequent bowel obstruction and diarrhea in a 35-year-old man. The patient was misdiagnosed and underwent surgery because of intestinal obstruction when he was first admitted to a local hospital. Then he was misdiagnosed as having Crohn's disease in another university teaching hospital. Finally, the patient asked for further treatment from our hospital because of the on-going clinical trial for treating refractory Crohn's disease by fecal microbiota transplantation. Physical examination revealed a slight distended abdomen with diffuse tenderness. Laboratory investigation showed the total number of normal leukocytes with neutrophilia as 90.5%, as well as eosinopenia, monocytopenia and lymphocytopenia. Barium radiography and sigmoidoscopy confirmed inflammatory stenosis of the sigmoid colon. We diagnosed the patient as having eosinophilic gastroenteritis by multi-examinations. The patient was treated by fecal microbiota transplantation combined with oral prednisone, and was free from gastrointestinal symptoms at the time when we reported his disease. This case highlights the importance of awareness of manifestations of a rare disease like eosinophilic gastroenteritis.
