The book concludes by briefly touching upon the need to engage in more research to support important conservation efforts and thereby protect threatened migratory phenomena.

Abstract

The Zugspitze Geodynamic Observatory Germany has been set up with a worldwide unique installation of a superconducting gravimeter at the summit of Mount Zugspitze. With regard to hydrology, this karstic high-alpine site is largely dominated by high precipitation amounts and a long seasonal snow cover period with significant importance for water supply to its forelands, while it shows a high sensitivity to climate change. However, regarding the majority of alpine regions worldwide there is only weak knowledge on temporal water storage variations due to only sparsely distributed hydrological and meteorological point sensors and the large variability and complexity of alpine signals. This underlines the importance of well-equipped areas such as Mount Zugspitze serving as natural test laboratories for an improved monitoring, understanding and prediction of alpine hydrological processes. The observatory superconducting gravimeter OSG 052 supplements the existing sensor network as a novel hydrological sensor system for the direct observation of the integral gravity effect of total water storage variations in the alpine research catchment Zugspitze. Besides the experimental setup and the available datasets, the required gravimetric prerequisites are presented such as calibration, tidal analysis and signal separation of the superconducting gravimeter observations from the first 2 years. The snowpack is identified as primary contributor to seasonal water storage variations and thus to the gravity residuals with a signal range of up to 750 nm/s² corresponding to 1957 mm snow water equivalent measured at a representative station at the end of May 2019. First hydro-gravimetric sensitivity analysis are based on simplified assumptions of the snowpack distribution within the area around Mount Zugspitze. These reveal a snow-gravimetric footprint of up to 4 km distance around the gravimeter with a dominant gravity contribution from the snowpack in the Partnach spring catchment. This study already shows that the hydro-gravimetric approach can deliver important and representative integral insights into this high-alpine site. This work is regarded as a concept study showing preliminary gravimetric results and sensitivity analysis for upcoming long-term hydro-gravimetric research projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Each year, large numbers of bats move across Europe between their summer and winter areas, yet even though many of them are endangered and legally protected, we are unaware about many aspects of their migratory behaviour. Here, taking Nyctalus noctula as a model species, we used stable hydrogen isotopic values in fur (δ2Hf) as an endogenous marker to shed light on the migratory behaviour of more than 1000 bats from hibernacula across Central Europe. Specifically, we asked the following questions: How flexible is migration in temperate zone bats? Which general migration pattern do noctule bats follow? How repeatable and thus predictable is the migratory behaviour of individuals? Do morphological correlates of migration occur in bats? Our study confirmed that noctule bats engage in partial and female-biased migration across Europe, suggesting strongest migration pressures for northern populations. Further, we revealed a combination of partial and differential migration patterns with highly variable migration distances which lead to a pronounced mixing of different source populations in hibernacula where mating occurs. Most individuals were consistent in their migration strategy over time, i.e. 86% could be repeatedly assigned to either long-distance or regional origin across years. This is consistent with our finding that the between-individual component explained 84% of the variation in δ2Hf values, suggesting specialized individual migratory behaviours and a strong natal philopatry. We discovered a positive correlation between forearm length and migration distance and support for the sex-specific effects of migration on body condition. Our study elucidated migration patterns over large geographical scales, demonstrating that considerable numbers of migratory bats originating from distant populations depend on hibernacula across central Europe, calling for an international conservation management.

Abstract

The replacement of conventional lighting with energy‐saving light emitting diodes (LED) is a worldwide trend, yet its consequences for animals and ecosystems are poorly understood. Strictly nocturnal animals such as bats are particularly sensitive to artificial light at night (ALAN). Past studies have shown that bats, in general, respond to ALAN according to the emitted light color and that migratory bats, in particular, exhibit phototaxis in response to green light. As red and white light is frequently used in outdoor lighting, we asked how migratory bats respond to these wavelength spectra. At a major migration corridor, we recorded the presence of migrating bats based on ultrasonic recorders during 10‐min light‐on/light‐off intervals to red or warm‐white LED, interspersed with dark controls. When the red LED was switched on, we observed an increase in flight activity for Pipistrellus pygmaeus and a trend for a higher activity for Pipistrellus nathusii. As the higher flight activity of bats was not associated with increased feeding, we rule out the possibility that bats foraged at the red LED light. Instead, bats may have flown toward the red LED light source. When exposed to warm‐white LED, general flight activity at the light source did not increase, yet we observed an increased foraging activity directly at the light source compared to the dark control. Our findings highlight a response of migratory bats toward LED light that was dependent on light color. The most parsimonious explanation for the response to red LED is phototaxis and for the response to warm‐white LED foraging. Our findings call for caution in the application of red aviation lighting, particularly at wind turbines, as this light color might attract bats, leading eventually to an increased collision risk of migratory bats at wind turbines.

Abstract

The Paddyfield Warbler Acrocephalus agricola has recently expanded its breeding range westwards to the western coast of the Black Sea. Although its non-breeding range is known (southern Iran to northern Myanmar), current knowledge on how individual birds migrate and how their routes evolve alongside range expansion processes is very limited. Data from one geolocator deployed on a Paddyfield Warbler at a recently established breeding site in Bulgaria show that this individual retraced the recent range expansion and followed a rather conservative route instead of migrating directly to India. An additional stable hydrogen (δ2H) analysis of feathers from 25 individual breeding birds in Bulgaria that had been grown during their stay in the non-breeding grounds indicated a low degree of migratory connectivity at the non-breeding grounds. Our results provide a first insight into the migration pattern of the Paddyfield Warbler and should stimulate further research on the use of the understudied Indo-European flyway by this species.

We construct a duality isomorphism in equivariant periodic cyclic homology analogous to Baaj-Skandalis duality in equivariant Kasparov theory. As a consequence we obtain general versions of the Green-Julg theorem and the dual Green-Julg theorem in periodic cyclic theory. Throughout we work within the framework of bornological quantum groups, thus in particular incorporating at the same time actions of arbitrary classical Lie groups as well as actions of compact or discrete quantum groups. Abstract

The Przewalski’s horse (Equus ferus przewalskii), the only remaining wild horse within the equid family, is one of only a handful of species worldwide that went extinct in the wild, was saved by captive breeding, and has been successfully returned to the wild. However, concerns remain that after multiple generations in captivity the ecology of the Przewalski’s horse and / or the ecological conditions in its former range have changed in a way compromising the species’ long term survival. We analyzed stable isotope chronologies from tail hair of pre-extinction and reintroduced Przewalski’s horses from the Dzungarian Gobi and detected a clear difference in the isotopic dietary composition. The direction of the dietary shift from being a mixed feeder in winter and a grazer in summer in the past, to a year-round grazer nowadays, is best explained by a release from human hunting pressure. A changed, positive societal attitude towards the species allows reintroduced Przewalski’s horses to utilize the scarce, grass-dominated pastures of the Gobi alongside local people and their livestock whereas their historic conspecifics were forced into less productive habitats dominated by browse.

Abstract

Encroachment of humans into pristine habitats is a major threat to biodiversity. We found that some paleotropical bat species from disturbed forests suffered from chronic stress and an impaired immune system, suggesting that allostatic overload may play a pivotal role in the extinction of wildlife species., Anthropogenic habitat disturbance is a major threat to biodiversity worldwide. Yet, before population declines are detectable, individuals may suffer from chronic stress and impaired immunity in disturbed habitats, making them more susceptible to pathogens and adverse weather conditions. Here, we tested in a paleotropical forest with ongoing logging and fragmentation, whether habitat disturbance influences the body mass and immunity of bats. We measured and compared body mass, chronic stress (indicated by neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios) and the number of circulating immune cells between several bat species with different roost types living in recovering areas, actively logged forests, and fragmented forests in Sabah, Malaysia. In a cave-roosting species, chronic stress levels were higher in individuals from fragmented habitats compared with conspecifics from actively logged areas. Foliage-roosting species showed a reduced body mass and decrease in total white blood cell counts in actively logged areas and fragmented forests compared with conspecifics living in recovering habitats. Our study highlights that habitat disturbance may have species-specific effects on chronic stress and immunity in bats that are potentially related to the roost type. We identified foliage-roosting species as particularly sensitive to forest habitat deterioration. These species may face a heightened extinction risk in the near future if anthropogenic habitat alterations continue.

Abstract

Background Leukocyte concentrations follow a circadian pattern in mammals, with elevated values at times of potential contact with pathogens and parasites. We hypothesized that this pattern is disturbed after an immune challenge. Methods In Thailand, we captured wrinkle-lipped bats (Chaerephon plicatus), when they returned to their colony at dawn. We challenged half of the animals (experimental group) with bacterial lipopolysaccharides and treated the others only with the carrier liquid (control group). We then compared body mass changes and differences in circulating immune cell counts at 8 h post-treatment. Results In experimental animals, we observed an increase in total leukocyte and neutrophil numbers of 17% and 95%, respectively. In control animals, concentrations of leukocytes decreased by 44% and those of neutrophils remained constant. Experimental treatment had no effect on lymphocytes, yet changes in eosinophil numbers were explained by sex. Eosinophils decreased by 66% in females and by 62% in males. Basophils and monocytes were rarest among all observed cell types and analysis was either impossible because of low numbers or yielded no significant effects, respectively. Discussion Our findings show that a simulated bacterial infection triggered a neutrophil-associated immune response in wrinkle-lipped bats, indicating a disruption of the diurnal fluctuation of immune cells. Our study suggests that bats exhibit circadian rhythms in immune cell counts. The magnitude of these fluctuations may vary across species according to specific- specific infection risks associated with colony sizes or specific roosting habits.

Abstract

Decision-making based on large amounts of data and different data sources constitutes a growing challenge for many actors in society. An increased flow of information from social media and open data sources means that decentralized decision-makers such as regions, municipalities and cities are forced to change, adapt, and modify their existing decision-making (Voight & Bright 2016). What is the current status of European cities and municipalities? How do municipalities and cities in Europe work with data-driven decision-making today? What are the future opportunities and challenges? This report provides an overview and examples of how different organisations in the European cities of Malmö, Copenhagen, Oxford, Manchester and Vienna work with and relate to possibilities, challenges and limitations of data-driven decision making. Furthermore, the report presents different views of urban stakeholders’ on data-driven decision making and how they relate to concepts of open data, big data, social media data and visualization. The purpose of this report is to outline current strategies and main points on how data is used in decision making in selected European Cities and to evaluate the current state and possible outlooks for data-driven decision making. The selected cities are either city partners in the UrbanData2Decide consortium or cities which collaborate closely with universities and institutes involved in the consortium.

500. Cyclic bouts of extreme bradycardia counteract the high metabolism of frugivorous bats

Abstract

Active flight requires the ability to efficiently fuel bursts of costly locomotion while maximizing energy conservation during non-flying times. We took a multi-faceted approach to estimate how fruit-eating bats (Uroderma bilobatum) manage a high-energy lifestyle fueled primarily by fig juice. Miniaturized heart rate telemetry shows that they use a novel, cyclic, bradycardic state that reduces daily energetic expenditure by 10% and counteracts heart rates as high as 900 bpm during flight. Uroderma bilobatum support flight with some of the fastest metabolic incorporation rates and dynamic circulating cortisol in vertebrates. These bats will exchange fat reserves within 24 hr, meaning that they must survive on the food of the day and are at daily risk of starvation. Energetic flexibly in U. bilobatum highlights the fundamental role of ecological pressures on integrative energetic networks and the still poorly understood energetic strategies of animals in the tropics.
