Experimental design methodology represents a powerful tool for the analysis and optimization of various processes. Immobilization of toxic substances by sorption onto low-cost materials has gained a lot of attention in the last decade. Fundamental knowledge about sorption processes and their practical use can be improved by experimental planning and statistical analysis. In this study, the effects of initial metal concentration and pH, as well as the sorbent mass and particle size, on Cu(II) sorption by natural clinoptilolite were evaluated and compared. Full factorial experimental design at two levels was applied. Statistically significant factors were determined considering residual Cu(II) concentrations as a system response. The Pareto graphs of standardized effects, Main effect plots and Interaction plots were created using statistical software. Initial sorbate concentration, sorbent mass and their interaction were recognized as statistically significant, at 95% confidence level. Main effect plot approved that sorbent mass increase and initial Cu(II) concentration decrease caused reduction of residual Cu(II) concentration in solution. On the other hand, the change of initial solution pH and sorbent particle size didn’t provoke significant response changes. Bearing in mind that pH is a factor with high effect on heavy metal sorption, the insignificant influence of initial pH detected in this study can be explained by buffering properties of the applied clinoptilolite and relatively narrow pH range chosen in order to prevent sorbent dissolution on on e side and sorbate precipitation on the other. By regression analysis, the mathematical model for process description was derived. The correlation between predicted and experimental values was high ( R 2 > 0.99). In the present study, a low cost biosorbent derived from the Lagenaria vulgaris plant by xanthation, was tested for its ability to remove copper from aqueous solution. The effect of contact time, initial pH, initial concentration of copper(II) ions and adsorbent dosage on the removal efficiency were studied in a batch process mode. The optimal pH for investigated metal was 5. A dosage of 4 g dm-3 of xanthated Lagenaria vulgaris biosorbent (xLVB) was found to be effective for maximum uptake of copper(II). The kinetic of sorption of metal was fast, reaching at equilibrium in 50 min. The kinetic data were found to follow closely the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption equilibrium was described well by the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity of 23.18 mg g-1 copper(II) ions on xLVB. The presence of sulfur groups on xLVB was identified by FTIR spectroscopic study. Copper removal efficiency was achieved at 81.35% from copper plating industry wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this study, we consider a variant of the Bilevel Uncapacitated Facility Location Problem (BLUFLP) in which the clients choose suppliers based on their own preferences. We propose three metaheuristic methods for solving this problem: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Simulated Annealing (SA) and a combination of Reduced and Basic Variable Neighborhood Search Method (RVNS-VNS). The solution encoding and constructive elements of all three proposed algorithms are adapted to the problem under consideration. The results of computational tests on problem instances with up to 2000 clients and 2000 potential facility locations show good performance of all three proposed methods, even on large problem dimensions. Finally, the obtained results indicate that the proposed RVNS-VNS method outperforms the PSO and SA methods in the sense of solutionsʼ quality and running times. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Inhibitory neurotransmission plays a substantial role in encoding of auditory cues relevant for sound localization in vertebrates. While the anatomical organization of the respective afferent auditory brainstem circuits shows remarkable similarities between mammals and birds, the properties of inhibitory neurotransmission in these neural circuits are strikingly different. In mammals, inhibition is predominantly glycinergic and endowed with fast kinetics. In birds, inhibition is mediated by γ-Aminobutiric acid (GABA) and too slow to convey temporal information. A further prominent difference lies in the mechanism of inhibition in the respective systems. In auditory brainstem neurons of mammals, [Cl-]i undergoes a developmental shift causing the actions of GABA and glycine to gradually change from depolarization to the 'classic' hyperpolarizing-inhibition before hearing onset. Contrary to this, in the mature avian auditory brainstem Cl- homeostasis mechanisms accurately adjust the Cl- gradient to enable depolarizing, but still very efficient, shunting inhibition. The present review considers the mechanisms underlying development of the Cl- homeostasis in the auditory system of mammals and birds and discusses some open issues that require closer attention in future studies. Remote Laboratory for Measuring Linear Dimensions with remote access and control via Internet is developed and described in this paper. The system is realized at the University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technical Sciences. This lab is dedicated to the students of secondary vocational schools and faculties with the aim to gain knowledge regarding linear dimension and mechanical component tolerance. The successful outcome of the liquid-metal leak test was a key event in the MEGAPIE (MEGAwatt PIlot Target Experiment) project, a multinational endeavor aimed at developing a reliable neutron spallation source operating with dense liquid metal. Indeed, the leak test validated the containment design, which was a regulatory requirement for demonstrating that a liquid-metal source could be operated safely. Furthermore, unique temperature and stress measurements were recorded that agreed well with test predictions published ahead of the test. This paper outlines the approach taken for predicting the consequences of a liquid-metal leak, with particular emphasis on a simplified one-phase calculation method that may be useful in the future for predicting the impact of accidental liquid-metal leaks at modest expense in terms of CPU time. Most of the assumptions underpinning the original analytical predictions necessarily erred on the conservative side. Therefore, the boundary conditions applied to the original analysis, such as the exit flow rate of the liquid-metal jet, are critically reviewed in this paper to improve on the existing agreement between the predictions and the experimental data. To evaluate whether the response of hematopoietic cells to interleukin-17 (IL-17) depends on the tissue microenvironment in which hematopoiesis occurs, the influence of recombinant mouse IL-17 on spleen hematopoietic cells and cytokine release was assessed in normal mice in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, IL-17 did not significantly affect the growth of granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) and erythroid (BFU-E and CFU-E) derived colonies. A single injection of IL-17 in vivo exhibited stimulatory effects on hematopoietic cells from both granulocytic and erythroid lineages. The increased number of metamyelocytes 48 h after treatment imply to the IL-17-induced stimulation of granulopoiesis. The number of BFU-E was increased at 24 h, while the number of CFU-E increased 6 h and 24 h alter treatment. Since the same treatment in the bone marrow decreased the number of CFU-E, it may be concluded that the local microenvironment plays an important role in IL-17-mediated effects on CFU-E. IL-17 increased the release of lL-6 both in vitro and in vivo, but showed tendency to suppress the constitutive secretion of IL-10 by spleen cells. Our results suggest the complexity of target cell response and interplay of secondary induced cytokines by IL-17 in different hematopoietic organs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this essay is re-actualizing the issue of subcultures in our sociological studies, as well as defining a new sub-cultural group, which has not been studied so far. For this purpose, here we interpret the results of an empirical research of the hardcore-punk subcultural group members' social origin and their attitudes to nation, religion and the consumer society values. The research was carried out in Belgrade and Nis in the period July-October 2005, as a part of the undergraduate honours thesis. After defining the notions of culture and subculture, and presenting the most important characteristics of the already mentioned subcultural group, we examine the group members' social origin and their attitudes to nation, religion and the values of the consumer society. The general conclusion is that members of the hardcore-punk subculture have clearly defined attitudes expressed in terms of explicit non-nationalism, atheistic orientation followed by taking a negative stance towards the church as an institution, together with the non-acceptance of the consumer mentality. These attitudes point to the fact that hardcore-punk has preserved and built on its identity as a subcultural group, regardless of the pervasive inclinations of the past fifteen years in our environment, the ones concerning the Nation and the Church. These inclinations include taking a positive stance towards religion, ‘returning’ to the church, and world globalizing trends concerning the imposition of the values of the consumer mentality. Numerous studies point to the presence of a specific dichotomy in contemporary circumstances. On the one hand, it is emphasized that the knowledge of natural sciences is necessary for the progress of society. On the other hand, there are clear indicators of a decline in students’ interest in mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry. In this context, analysing the continuity of students’ interest in teaching subjects is raised as relevant. Previous research on students’ perceptions of different school subjects did not specifically take into account the students’ majors and their attitudes towards the subjects. This study aims to investigate the high school students’ perceptions of their educational experience in primary school, comparing the responses of the students enrolled in science-intensive programs to those of other students. We researched a sample of 1045 students from four high schools in Kragujevac and Novi Sad. Using an online questionnaire, we examined the following: the overall students’ achievement in primary school in terms of final grades, their favourite subject in primary school, and their perceptions of the difficulty, usefulness, and interest of the subjects in primary school. The results show that students enrolling in natural sciences and specialized programs in mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, and chemistry have better overall academic performance than other students. Moreover, they significantly prefer mathematics, computer science, and physics. Additionally, these students perceive mathematics, computer science, physics, and chemistry, but not biology, as considerably less difficult and rate them as more interesting and useful compared to other students.
