One of the important heating criteria of a greenhouse in the Northern hemisphere countries is heat availability, particularly in the winter season. Among other heat storage types, seasonal soil-based energy storage performance is auspicious. However, the performance is affected by the length and depth of borehole pipes used, which are very expensive for growers. Therefore, this study investigates the performance of a shallow seasonal soil-based energy storage heat pump, in a greenhouse. Thick insulations were installed to reduce soil heat loss. The soil thermal imbalance ratio was calculated to know the thermal recovery resulted. Based on the results, the heat pump’s seasonal coefficient of performance (COP) heating and cooling varied between 1.48–2.97 and 1.20–3.45, respectively. The COPsys heating and cooling were observed to be 1.51 and 1.55, respectively. However, the system successfully maintained indoor temperature >16°C in other seasons, except for winter. Due to low brine input in winter, the average indoor temperature dropped to 11°C, indicating a thermal soil property problem. Moreover, the proposed system achieved soil thermal imbalance ratio of 32.76%.

On the medical device market there are several types of stationary and portable incubators that can be used in the care of infants. The prototype of a textile incubator made as part of this work consists of five material layers. The textile incubator is equipped with a functional heating and cooling mat, which is made on the basis of 3D channeled weft-knitted fabric. Its function is to generate heat and maintain it inside the textile incubator or to cool the baby's body while using therapeutic hypothermia. The mat is equipped with hoses transporting the heating or cooling medium. The mat, depending on variable input parameters, can emit heat in the range from 1.15 W to 86.88 W. In case of the cooling function, it can receive heat in the range from −4.32 to −27.96 W. This indicates a large adjustment range of the amount of heat supplied and received, which is a positive feature, and enables programming the heat balance to ensure comfort for the baby. The analysis of temperature measurements on the mat surface confirmed that maximum temperature differences do not exceed 1.6°C.

In the recent time the EAHE is widely used as a passive cooling and heating technique due to the hug thermal potential of earth as and as a result of energy crisis. Poroelastic properties play an essential role in interaction between deformation and fluid pressure change in porous rocks. These properties can be affected by microstructural evolution such as porosity change and micro-cracks growth. In this study, the modification of poroelastic properties of a hard rock (granite) is investigated in terms of thermally induced micro-cracks. Granite samples are first subjected to a heating–cooling treatment with different values of temperature. The variations of bulk modulus, stiffness of solid grains and Biot’s coefficient of thermally treated samples are determined and analyzed. It is found that both connected and occluded micro-cracks are generated in granite samples. The bulk modulus of porous material is affected by the connected micro-cracks, while the stiffness of solid grains is influenced by the occluded micro-cracks. The Biot’s coefficient is affected by the connectivity of micro-cracks. All poroelastic properties evolve with effective mean stress and a non-linear poroelastic law should be defined.

Office buildings require a significant amount of energy for heating and cooling purposes. A possible strategy for reducing this energy in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and operational costs is to specify high-performance facades. However, their benefits remain unclear for UK conditions with mild winters and cool summers. This paper reports on an investigation on the energy demand of offices in London, UK, incorporating facades with U-values between 1·2 and 2·6 W/(m2 K) and g-values between 0·3 and 0·5 using the dynamic simulation tool Tas. Other variables considered included climate change (using the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers’ future weather data files), low internal gains, long working hours and office orientation. It was found that, apart from the case when internal gains are low, cooling is overwhelmingly necessary and energy usage increases with decreasing U-value and decreases with decreasing g-value. Low-U-value facades act to reduce conduction heat losses, thereby increasing energy use. Conversely, low-g-value facades act to reduce solar heat gains, thereby reducing the energy required for cooling. The results are used to highlight deficiencies in The Building Regulations 2010 and where more advice would be of benefit. The paper also discusses the merits of a number of strategies for reducing energy use in office buildings.

In order to contribute to the decarbonization of heating consumption, France has set some objectives to develop District heating and/or cooling networks (DHCN). In this context, it is useful to identify the most appropriate district areas for implementing DHCN, and to assess their potential of development. After introducing the situation of DHCN in France, this paper presents a typology to assess the potential of development of those networks in France, based on an original method that involves the calculation of 3 variables: the linear heating/cooling density (LHD/LCD), the Proportion of Buildings anterior to 1990 and the share of energy consumption from the residential sector, to assess respectively the energy density, the supply temperatures and the energy mix between the different sectors of activities. LHD and LCD are calculated using a Delaunay triangulation and Kruskal's algorithm applied to buildings whose heating and cooling demands are calculated at a local scale. 18 different types of districts are defined for both DHN and DCN, among which 9 have a sufficient LHD/LCD. Then, the potential of development for DHN and DCN is calculated on the French territory. Thus, the DHN potential is assessed to 132 TWh/y while the DCN potential is assessed to 7.8 TWh/y.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens that cause illness primarily in the elderly, in the immunocompromised or in patients with underlying lung disease. Since 2013, a global outbreak of NTM infection related to heater-cooler units (HCU) used in cardio-thoracic surgery has been identified. This outbreak was caused by a single strain of Mycobacterium intracellulare subsp. chimaera. In order to estimate the prevalence of this outbreak strain in Israel, we sampled Mycobacterium intracellulare subsp. chimaera from several HCU machines in Israel, as well as from patients, sequenced their genomes and compared them to the outbreak strain. The presence of mixed mycobacteria species in the samples complicated the analysis of obtained sequences. By applying a metagenomic binning strategy, we were able to obtain, and characterize, genomes of single strains from the mixed samples. Mycobacterium intracellulare subsp. chimaera strains were compared to each other and to previously reported genomes from other countries. The strain causing the outbreak related to the HCU machines was identified in several such machines in Israel but not in any clinical sample.

As the decarbonisation of heating and cooling becomes a matter of critical importance, it has been shown that flooded mines can provide a reliable source of low-carbon thermal energy production and storage when coupled with appropriate demand via an appropriate heat transfer technology. This paper summarises the potential resource represented by a long legacy of mining operations, the means heat can be extracted from (or rejected to) flooded mine workings, and then considers the risks and challenges faced by minewater geothermal energy (MWG) schemes in the planning, construction, and operational phases. A combination of site visits, interviews and literature reviews has informed concise, updated accounts for many of the minewater geothermal energy systems installed across the world, including accounts of hitherto unpublished systems. The paper has found that a number of previously reported MWG schemes are now non-operational. Key risks encountered by MWG schemes (which in some cases have led to decommissioning) include clogging of system components with mineral precipitates (e.g., ochre), uncertainty in targeting open mine voids and their hydraulic behaviour, uncertainty regarding longevity of access to minewater resource, and accumulated ongoing monitoring and maintenance burdens.

The solar thermal storage is an important issue for greenhouse applications in winter period. For the reason that greenhouse operations, such as heating and cooling, consume a large amount of energy. The thermal storage is important to minimize the cost of greenhouse production. Surplus air thermal energy (SATE) is available in greenhouses during all the year, even in the cold period, hence its use in greenhouse applications is possible. In this present work, a solar heating cooling system (SHCS) with quartzitic sandstone as thermal storage material to store and use the SATE in greenhouse production was operated for cooling and heating processes and its performance was evaluated during winter period. This system consists of a quartzitic sandstone and including thermal storage blocks and pipes with fans to manage those processes in greenhouse. This system was located in the Souss-Massa region, Morocco. The heating and cooling of inside air by SHCS can improve the greenhouse microclimate and tomato yield. The results show that the air temperature in greenhouse equipped with SHCS exceeds than that of the control one about 3 °C at night and 6 °C lower during day, with fewer fluctuations. Moreover, the relative humidity was 10% lower at night. The SATE stored was varied between 15.68 and 140 MJ/day in plastic greenhouse with an area of 165 m2 during day, and 65% of this heat recovered at night. The SHCS was improved the tomato yield about 1.74 kg/m2 than that of normal production. An economic analysis revealed that this system is very profitable and could generate profits for farmers.

We discuss the process of equilibrium’s attainment in an interacting manyfermions system linked to a heat reservoir, whose temperature T is subject to a short-time disturbance of total duration 2τ . In this time-interval, its temperature increases up to a maximum value M T , cooling off afterward (also gradually) to its original value. In this work, the influence of heating-cooling rates on the microstructure of ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) during oxidation was firstly reported. Four different kinds of processes (low-heating and low-cooling rates, low-heating and high-cooling rates, high-heating and low-cooling rates, high-heating and high-cooling rates) combined with static oxidation at 1500 °C were applied on ZrB2-SiC-WB composite coatings. The results showed that the oxide layers of the samples presented different microstructure characters under different heating-cooling modes. A relatively thick liquid layer with obvious bubble phenomenon was generated under the high-heating rate, while a thin liquid layer without bubbles was formed under the low-heating rate. Certain amount of sheet B2O3 crystals with large sizes were formed under the high-cooling rate, while did not for the low-cooling rate. The formation mechanisms of these unique microstructures were analyzed and the influence of heating and cooling rates was explained.

This paper puts forward the simulations of different configurations of combined solar evacuated tubular collector with a ground source heat pump system to meet the heating, cooling and hot water demands of a house in Tabriz. The configurations include: indirect expansion (parallel), indirect expansion (series) and direct expansion. The simulation was done in TRNSYS with 9 m2 evacuated tubular solar collector and three boreholes with depths of 75 m. Power consumption and COP of all configurations were compared, and the optimum configuration had the highest value of overall COP which is the indirect expansion in parallel mode with the overall COP of 3.96. Furthermore, the economic analysis was done to compare the proposed optimum system with the conventional ones, where a payback period of about 13 years was obtained. On the other hand, by considering the environmental effects of fossil fuels produced by conventional systems and natural gas exporting income, the amount of 433.8 US$ and 2629 US$ will be saved, annually. By adding the environmental and natural gas exporting costs to the operating costs of the conventional system, the payback period was reduced down to 6 years, showing that the system can be feasible in the northern parts of Iran with a cold climate.

At a time when the population is ageing and most people choose to live in their own home for as long as possible, it is important to consider various aspects of supportive and comfortable environments for housing. This study, conducted in South Australia, aims to provide information about the links between the type of housing in which older people live, the weather and occupants’ heating and cooling behaviours as well as their health and well-being. The study used a Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) system to survey 250 people aged 65 years and over who lived in their own home. The respondents were recruited from three regions representing the three climate zones in South Australia: semi-arid, warm temperate and temperate. The results show that while the majority of respondents reported being in good health, many lived in dwellings with minimal shading and no wall insulation and appeared to rely on the use of heaters and coolers to achieve thermally comfortable conditions. Concerns over the cost of heating and cooling were shared among the majority of respondents and particularly among people with low incomes. Sinusitis is an inflammation caused in the nasal passage due to cold, allergies or by nasal polyps. Sinusitis is a major Problem among one in eight people around the world. People are interested more in ailment of natural treatments than antibiotic and other medicines. The objective of this work is to provide relief from sinusitis pain through acupressure points. The proposed methodology of sinusitis treatment can be done by applying heating cooling effect and massaging action simultaneously. This paper deals with both the methods of treating the sinusitis. This system integrates an android mobile application with a hardware device that serves this purpose. A face mask which consists of motors and heating and cooling system embedded which can be controlled using user friendly mobile application. The similar methodology can be used for other applications like back pain, muscular pain and knee pain relief.

In order to investigate compressive mechanical behaviors of rock materials after different heating-cooling treatments, in this paper, a series of uniaxial compressive experiments are carried out on red sandstone samples after various heating temperature (from 25℃ to 1000℃) and water cooling treatments (10℃) to obtain evolution laws of mechanical property. The evolution laws of peak strength, elastic modulus, primary wave velocity and micro-structure are analyzed in details. And for better reflecting compressive stress-strain behaviors of red sandstone after heating-cooling treatments, based on Caputo variable-order fractional calculus, considering strain correlation and constant strain loading rate, we propose a novel variable-order fractional constitutive model to describe stress-strain behaviors of red sandstone samples after heating-cooling treatments. The validation of proposed model is well verified and a comparative study between proposed variable-order fractional constitutive model and constant-order fractional constitutive model is performed to highlight the advantage of proposed model. The evolutions of mechanical characteristics are revealed by presented varying-order function related to strain and the influence of fitting parameters on stress-strain behaviors are also discussed for deeply comprehending compressive mechanical mechanism of red sandstone after heating-cooling treatments.

Common quibbles in most homes are the temperature setting. Some family members are comfortable with cooler temperature settings, while other family members prefer warmer temperature settings. Not to mention the fragile elderly and some medical situations require different temperature settings for those individuals than the rest of the occupants of the space. The purpose of this article is to outline a research where we created a working prototype of a portable, effective Peltier cooling/heating system. Peltier, or thermoelectric modules, are devices that use the differences in electric voltages to create a difference in temperature between two flat opposite sides of the thin module. The system can easily be switched between the heating and cooling modes. In contrast to compression refrigeration systems it produces a very low level of noise output. Also, the system is portable, small in size, and light weight. Another advantage of using the Peltier system is it does not employ hazardous substances such as hydrochlorofluorocarbons, but uses water. While a system such as this could be beneficial in the day to day comfort of any individual, it could prove vital to the survival of the elderly and medically vulnerable individuals. This heating/cooling system can enhance the performance of military, particularly in biological warfare suites, and law enforcement personnel who find themselves in less than desirable weather conditions. This uniquely designed Peltier system is compact, and lightweight. Cooling/heating through the system would be achieved by the exchange of heat between the user and a custom designed vest. The system is powered by lithium ion battery pack. Details of this unique design are discussed in the article. Also, the testing and results are reported, and discussed.

Purpose This paper, using energy softwares, designed of Iran and optimized a residential villa in Saman city located in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. Design/methodology/approach Having used the ideas of Climate Consultant software, the basic designing was conducted by Design Builder Software, and the cooling and heating loads and lighting tools and equipment were calculated. Then, the amount of consuming of heating, cooling and lighting load of the building was optimized through insulation of walls and ceiling, using green roof, double glazing UPVC windows, light intensity sensor and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system. Findings Simulation results for the stated scenarios showed an annual reduction in energy consumption of 21.1, 7.9, 26.41, 27.3 and 72.3 per cent, respectively. Also, by combining all the five scenarios, an optimal state was achieved which, from the results, brought about an annual reduction of 86.9 per cent in the energy consumption. Originality/value The authors hope that the results of the current paper could be helpful for designers and engineers in reduction of energy consumption for designing a building in similar climatic conditions.

Climate change, extreme weather conditions, and local scale urban heat island (UHI) effect altogether have substantial impacts on people’s health and comfort. The urban population spends most of its time in buildings, therefore, it is important to examine the relationship between weather/climate conditions and indoor environment. The role of buildings is complex in this context. On the one hand UHI effect is mostly created by buildings and artificial surfaces. On the other hand they account for about 40% of energy consumption on European average. Since environmental protection requires increased energy efficiency, the ultimate goal from this perspective is to achieve nearly zero-energy buildings. When estimating energy consumption, daily average temperatures are taken into account. The design parameters (e.g. for heating systems) are determined using temperature-based criteria. However, due to climate change, these critical values are likely to change as well. Therefore, it is important to examine the temperature time series affecting the energy consumption of buildings. For the analysis focusing on the Carpathian region within central/eastern Europe, we used the daily average, minimum and maximum temperature time series of five Hungarian cities (i.e. Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and Szombathely). The main aim of this study is to investigate the effect of changing daily average temperatures and the rising extreme values on building design parameters, especially heating and cooling periods (including the length and average temperatures of such periods).

One of the most important parameters of energy efficiency is to determine the heating and cooling requirements of the buildings and to develop the appropriate heating/cooling technology. In this study, the regional residence heating/cooling loads were determined in order to develop technology for regional heating/cooling systems in Turkey. Heating/cooling loads of the residences were made separately for each province according to the heating regions determined in accordance with TS 825. Fuel and electricity consumption, population, number of residences and meteorological data were used as the basis for determining the heating/cooling loads. Using the data obtained, an important source data was obtained to investigate the possibility of using alternative energy sources for each region or even every province.

Shape memory alloys can be utilized as actuators for several applications in aerospace industry which require high strength and stable actuation cycles together with the transformation temperatures above 100 °C. Aging is one of the methods for Nickel rich NiTiHf alloys that adjusts the transformation temperatures and enhances the cyclic stability due to the formation of nano-sized precipitates. In this study, the high cycle functional fatigue life and behavior of the extruded and aged Ni50.3Ti29.7Hf20 high-temperature shape memory alloy were investigated in order to reveal the effect of aging on the stability of the actuation strain and transformation temperatures. The aging was conducted at 550 °C for 3 h. 200 MPa was chosen in the functional fatigue experiments since no irrecoverable strain was determined under this stress magnitude for the extruded and the aged samples in the load-biased heating cooling experiments. The fatigue experiments were conducted twice to check the repeatability of the shape memory properties of the samples and it was observed that the life cycle of the aged sample was determined as 20,337 and the extruded sample completely lost the shape recovery ability after 5000 cycles.

In the constructions of multilayer cylindrical shells in heat-and-power engineering the materials, exhibiting rheological properties, such as concrete, polymers or fiber glass are widely used. In this connection, the study of temperature stresses in polymers, the analysis of the influence of various factors on the processes course under consideration, is of great importance. The paper presents an analytical solution of the thermal creep problem in polymers using the Kelvin-Voigt model for a rigidly clamped rod for various cases of temperature loading. The analysis of these solutions is also made on the example of a specific material for certain laws with changing temperature loads.

Intermittent drying is a common technique for food conservation. The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of non-isothermal drying and the wave periods using the effective diffusivity (Deff), the glass transition temperature (Tg), their relationship to moisture content and the temperature of the product, as parameters for controlling quality deterioration. The heating–cooling profile was developed as a trapezoidal wave form using three different wave periods (τ:60, 120 and 160 min), with a midpoint temperature (Tm) of 50 °C and ∆T = 10 °C. The ascending (AC) heating–cooling treatment began at 40 °C, and the descending (DC) heating–cooling treatment began at 60 °C. The drying temperature (Ta), the surface temperature of the garlic (Ts), the internal temperature of the garlic (Ti), and the weight of the garlic slices were measured and recorded in real time. The Deff was calculated using the slope method. A higher drying rate was observed in the AC drying treatment. The Tg variations were associated with the Ti and moisture content of the garlic. The drying time (ts) for the AC and the DC heating–cooling profiles was found to be between 180 to 238 min.

Impact of a reduction in heating, cooling and electricity loads on the performance of a polygeneration district heating and cooling system based on waste gasification

The temperature memory effect (TME) has been reported as another interesting feature of many shape memory materials (SMMs). In this paper, we briefly review the recent progress in monitoring minor over-heating/cooling for random thermal fluctuation based on the TME via differential scanning calorimeter test. Two typical SMMs, namely shape memory alloy and shape memory polymer, are investigated. Two methods, namely the turning point method and enthalpy method are discussed together with their underlying mechanisms based on the experimental results. While the enthalpy method has the advantage of far more less number of pre-experiment, a systematical investigation is still required to confirm its potential.

Fracture toughness is considered a critical index for measuring the fracture strength of cracked rocks, which is sometimes influenced by the heating–cooling process. This process and its repetition change the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. The facade of buildings bears a larger number of heating–cooling cycles over days and seasons. Accordingly, this study simulated the heating–cooling process and its impact on the mode I and mode II fracture toughness of travertine as a widely used rock in the facade of modern buildings by designing a larger number of low-temperature heating–cooling cycles. Previous researches mostly has been studied the effect of high temperatures on physical and mechanical rock properties but in this study, effect of low temperature in a large number of heating-cooling cycle is investigated. Two types of travertine were considered and studied. The mode I and mode II fracture toughness tests were performed on 160 cracked chevron notched Brazilian disc (CCNBD) specimens after applying 0, 1, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 heating–cooling cycles. Mechanical properties were measured, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were taken to evaluate and match the results of fracture toughness tests. According to the results, mode I and mode II fracture toughness increased after a heating–cooling cycle and then decreased by increasing the number of cycles. The changes in the fracture toughness were consistent with variations of mechanical properties and SEM images with increasing the number of heating–cooling cycles.

This study reviews water-based wall systems for space heating and cooling and thermal barriers (TB) for the reduction of buildings’ thermal load. The review gives a general overview of the research and groups it into subtopics that are discussed in detail. For space heating and cooling, the subtopics entail thermal performance, thermal comfort, renewable energy sources, use for building retrofit, and combination with phase change materials (PCM). For TB, especially the working principle, types and designs, and performance are discussed. A classification system is proposed separately for wall heating and cooling systems and TB based on the designs found in scientific literature. Benefits and drawbacks are summarized, and design recommendations are provided for the wall systems. It was shown that in certain cases, radiant wall systems can be preferable to radiant floors and ceilings, but further comparisons would be useful to provide conclusive evidence. For TB, the studies uniformly declare that TB reduce buildings’ thermal loads and energy demands. Few studies focused on the economic and environmental aspects of using TB. Most of the studies about TB are based on calculations. Measurements to quantify the benefits of TB under real operation and refine the conditions under which various types of TB are feasible are lacking. Enhancing the wall performance by PCM in the active layer, application of the wall systems in building retrofit, and alternating between the functions of heating, cooling, and TB present the biggest research opportunities and challenges.

The effects of convective and stratiform diabatic processes in the near-core region on tropical cyclone (TC) structure and intensity change are examined by artificially modifying the convective and stratiform heating/cooling between 40- and 80-km radii. Sensitivity experiments show that the absence of convective heating in the annulus can weaken TC intensity and decrease the inner-core size. The increased convective heating generates a thick and polygonal eyewall, while the storm intensifies more gently than that in the control run. The removal of stratiform heating can slow down TC intensification with a moderate intensity, whereas the doubling of stratiform heating has little effect on the TC evolution compared to the control run. The halved stratiform cooling facilitates TC rapid intensification and a compact inner-core structure with the spiral rainbands largely suppressed. With the stratiform cooling doubled, the storm terminates intensification and eventually develops a double-eyewall-like structure accompanied by the significantly outward expansion of the inner-core size. The removal of both stratiform heating and cooling generates the strongest storm with the structure and intensity similar to those in the experiment with stratiform cooling halved. When both stratiform heating and cooling are doubled, the storm first decays rapidly, followed by the vertical connection of the updrafts at mid- to upper levels in the near-core region and at lower levels in the collapsed eyewall, which reinvigorates the eyewall convection but with a large outward slope.

The recent development in the temperature memory effect (TME) via differential scanning calorimetry in shape memory alloys is briefly discussed. This phenomenon was also called the thermal arrest memory effect in the literature. However, these names do not explicitly reveal the potential application of this phenomenon in temperature monitoring. On the other hand, the standard testing process of the TME has great limitation. Hence, it cannot be directly applied for temperature monitoring in most of the real engineering applications in which temperature fluctuation occurs mostly in a random manner within a certain range. However, as shown here, after proper modification, we are able to monitor the maximum or minimum temperature in either over-heating or over-cooling with reasonable accuracy.
