The megatooth shark, † Otodus megalodon , which likely reached at least 15 m in total length, is an iconic extinct shark represented primarily by its gigantic teeth in the Neogene fossil record. As one of the largest marine carnivores to ever exist, understanding the biology, evolution, and extinction of † O. megalodon is important because it had a significant impact on the ecology and evolution of marine ecosystems that shaped the present-day oceans. Some attempts inferring the body form of † O. megalodon have been carried out, but they are all speculative due to the lack of any complete skeleton. Here we highlight the fact that the previous total body length estimated from vertebral diameters of the extant white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) for an † O. megalodon individual represented by an incomplete vertebral column is much shorter than the sum of anteroposterior lengths of those fossil vertebrae. This factual evidence indicates that † O. megalodon had an elongated body relative to the body of the modern white shark. Although its exact body form remains unknown, this proposition represents the most parsimonious empirical evidence, which is a significant step towards deciphering the body form of † O. megalodon .

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. The fate of bycatch species released back into the water is crucial to estimate population status and consequent decisions to implement adequate management measurements for elasmobranchs. The shortnose guitarfish, Zapteryx brevirostris, is an endemic species of the Southwest Atlantic. It is currently listed as 'Vulnerable' both in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Brazilian red lists. Although this species displays high tolerance to capture and transportation by fishers from the capture site to the fish market, a significant reduction in survival rates is observed during the reproductive period. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine post‐capture and post‐commercial transportation consequences in pregnant females obtained as bycatch from artisanal fisheries in Southern Brazil. Results showed high abortion rates and reduced maternal survival after abortion, with all abortions occurring within 28 h of monitoring in laboratory. Stress plasma markers were also evaluated, to determine the physiological consequences of capture‐induced parturition to pregnant females. Results showed alteration in all markers measured (plasma urea, pH, lactate, phosphorus, and potassium) with values for dead pregnant females being different from non‐pregnant females and those which survived capture and subsequent abortions. The mortality caused by fisheries bycatch may prove difficult to manage, with immediate release and specific handling protocols for pregnant females implemented through environmental education environmental education and fishermen training programs, potential options to maintain adequate maternal survival and recruitment for this species. There is a growing concern about elamobranch overfishing worldwide, as well as an urgent need for the implementation of containment plans for bycatch, representing a very significant volume of annual catches for batoids and sharks. This study provides new information to understand the impact caused by incidental capture in an endemic and threatened guitarfish, suggesting practices to assist with satisfactory management plans for the shortnose guitarfish, Zapteryx brevirostris, especially during their reproductive season. During 1442 h of visual observations over 7 years throughout the World Heritage listed Paranaguá estuarine complex, Brazil, seven occurrences of interactions were observed at a single location involving breaching Manta birostris displacing schools of teleosts, which were subsequently preyed upon by Sotalia guianensis. Although the interactions were not definitively categorized as being amensal, commensal or mutual, their restriction to isolated space (adjacent to a protected area) and time (summer) supports previous assertions the area is important to regional productivity and the continuation of protected-area status. The diets of six shark species, Sphyrna lewini, Sphyrna zygaena, Carcharhinus obscurus, Carcharhinus limbatus, Rhizoprionodon lalandii and Galeocerdo cuvier, were investigated in a subtropical coastal ecosystem of southern Brazil. Stomach content data were obtained to assess foraging niche segregation and ontogenetic shifts in the diets of these sharks. Five of the shark species off the Paraná coast were ichthyophagous, with the exception of S. zygaena, which was teutophagous. With the exception of G. cuvier, which had a generalist diet, the other five species displayed specialization in their feeding. Ontogenetic shifts were observed in C. obscurus and S. lewini with large individuals consuming elasmobranchs. Owing to the diet overlap between C. obscurus and S. lewini, C. obscurus and C. limbatus and R. lalandii and C. limbatus, future studies on the spatial and temporal distributions of these species are needed to understand the extent of competitive interactions. Occurrence of multiple whitetip reef sharks Triaenodon obesus in the Atlantic Ocean is reported for the first time from near a sunken ferry off the Paraná coast in south‐eastern Brazil. Silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) populations in the South Atlantic Ocean are listed as vulnerable under the IUCN. In fact, this species is classified as critically endangered in Brazil under the Ministry of the Environment. The present study reports the first opportunistic sighting of an aggregation of 250-300 silky sharks in the Alcatrazes Archipelago Wildlife Refuge. Stomach contents of 175 Brazilian sharpnose sharks, Rhizoprionodon lalandii, were examined to assess their feeding habits. Caught by artisanal fishers between June 2006 and July of 2007 at Ipanema Beach, on the central coast of the state of Paraná, southern Brazil, R. lalandii appears to be piscivorous (89.7% IRI), feeding mainly on families of Clupeidae (5.1% IRI) and Sciaenidae (3.7% IRI) and secondarily on squid Lolliguncula brevis (8.6% IRI). Diets were similar between sexes and seasons. However, there were ontogenetic changes in their diets. The major items for neonates were Penaeidae crustaceans (%IRI = 56.4) and Engraulidae fishes (%IRI = 29.3); for the juveniles, Sciaenidae (%IRI = 62.5) and Clupeidae (%IRI = 19.7), and for adults Clupeidae (%IRI = 45.8) and Sciaenidae (%IRI = 15.9). Only neonate sharks consumed crustaceans, whereas all size classes consumed cephalopods and teleosts. Neonates had the lowest trophic level (TR = 3.8), with the diet of juveniles and adults the highest (TR = 4.2). Given its abundance and diet, R. lalandii may be an important predator of demersal and pelagic prey in coastal waters of Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a research study regarding the non-standard fishing of large sharks in Paraná, Brazil. Research shows the shark species that are being fished in the state including Elasmobranch, Trichiuridae, Rhinopteridae, and rays and 60 specimens have already recorded. Furthermore, dusky sharks are commonly caught by Brazilian fishermen in the coastal area of the state.

Sharks are very sensitive to stress and prone to a high mortality rate after capture. Since approximately 50 million of sharks are caught as bycatch every year, and current recommendations to reduce the impact of commercial fishing strongly support immediate release, it is imperative to better understand post-release mortality caused by the stress of capture and handling. Blood samples allow the assessment of stress levels which are valuable tools to reduce mortality in commercial, recreational and scientific fishing, being essential for the improvement in those conservation measures. Biochemical analyses are widely used for sharks as stress indicators, with secondary plasma parameters (lactate, glucose and ions) being the most often employed assays. However, it is virtually impossible to determine baseline plasma parameters in free-ranging sharks, since blood withdrawal involves animal capture and restrain, which are stressful procedures. This study aims at analyzing secondary parameters of five healthy tiger sharks captured with circular hooks and handlines in Fernando de Noronha (Northeastern Brazil) and comparing them with secondary parameters of three dead tiger sharks caught off Recife (also Northeastern Brazil). The results showed that the analysis of some plasma constituents in dead animals may be an efficient tool to assess stress and lethality. However, traditional parameters such as glucose and calcium, need to be used with caution. The results also demonstrated the extreme importance of urea and phosphorus for assessing stress response and mortality in tiger sharks, both parameters frequently neglected and of utmost importance for shark's homeostasis.

Maternal nutrient provisioning occurs in most live-bearing chondrichthyan lineages. It is particularly conspicuous in the Myliobatiformes, whereby the endometrium secretes a nutrient-rich histotroph that is utilized by the developing embryo. Guitarfishes and sawfishes are included in the order Rhinopristiformes, which currently encompasses five families: Pristidae, Rhinobatidae, Trygonorrhinidae, Rhinidae and Glaucostegidae. Considering the low number of studies focused on oral structures in Rhinopristiformes and the need to better understand their internal morphology, this study aimed to (1) evaluate and describe the morphological variation of the oropharyngeal denticles of guitarfishes and sawfish; (2) evaluate and describe the ontogenetic and sexual variation of the oropharyngeal denticles of Zapteryx brevirostris; (3) propose characters potentially useful for taxonomic and systematic purposes and (4) discuss the possible functions and advantages of these structures. Tissue samples were taken from the oropharyngeal region of specimens preserved in 70% alcohol and then prepared for visualization in scanning electron microscopy. A new method for sampling the pharynx region is proposed herein. Considerable morphological variation between families and genera was observed. However, no variation between conspecifics was found. Regional variations of denticles when examining a single individual were observed in shape, ornamentation, and orientation. In Zapteryx brevirostris, males had a significantly higher density of denticles in the ventral region than females and lower densities were observed in juveniles. The four characters discussed here are based on the presence of keels, number of cusps, distal end elongation and width/length ratio of the oropharyngeal denticles. The chola guitarfish, Rhinobatos percellens, is one of the most-captured batoids on the Brazilian coast, and an important predator of benthic community. Stomachs from R. percellens were sampled in the Paranaguá estuarine complex (March/2006 to March/2007 and October/2008 to September/2009). The stomachs obtained were used for describing the diet of R. percellens, and verifying if there are seasonal and ontogenetic differences in their feeding into the estuarine area. The general analysis showed a specialized diet with a predominance of three species in food contents: Leptochela serratorbita, Caridea remains and Ogyrides alphaerostris. Ontogenetic and seasonal analysis did not reveal significant differences in the food consumption. These data reveal that R. percellens is a specialist predator of L. serratorbita, and this food component is consumed by all size classes.

Simple Summary: This study investigates the historical fluctuations in the Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis) abundance and its impact on the purse seine fishery dynamics in southeast–south Brazil. Using an ECOPATH mass balance model, the trophic relationships and biomass importance between two fishery collapses, in 2000 and 2017, were analyzed. Following 2000, the fishery became multi-species. Mean trophic levels showed a decline until 2008, when more advanced vessels expanded the fishery grounds, increasing the trophic levels. However, by 2016, the fishery collapsed due to the high catches and natural mortality rates, a drop in primary production, and rising water temperatures, suggesting a detrimental cycle affecting the sardine stocks. The inter-annual fluctuations of abundance of the Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis) during the last decades have deeply modified the purse seine fishery dynamics. This study evaluates the trophic relationships of the main species exploited by this fishery and the importance of its biomass for the southeast–south Brazil marine ecosystem (22° S–34° S). Data were analyzed using a mass balance model (ECOPATH) between the two fishery collapses: 2000 and 2017. From 2000 onwards, the sardine fishery adopted a multi-species character. The mean trophic level of the catches (MTL) showed a decreasing trend until 2008, when more modern vessels with greater autonomy entered the fishery, and expanded the traditional fishing area to exploit northern fishing grounds. The MTL in the expanded fishing area suddenly increased and was characterized by high biomass of the Brazilian sardine and other species with a high biomass and high ecotrophic impact, falling again to the lowest level in 2016. The model evidenced high estimates for fishing mortality, natural mortality, and flow to detritus between 2008 and 2016, when sardine fishing collapsed. During this period, a sharp drop in the primary production required to sustain the catches from 2012 onwards accompanied a significant fall in the biomass accumulation rate. This pattern was coincidental with the increasing mean temperature of the catches, which was probably acting as a limiting factor for the primary production, resulting in a higher natural mortality and flow to detritus. Since 2015, Brazilian legislation governing resource extraction in the Santos Basin has required daily monitoring of beaches (∼1490 km) in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), São Paulo (SP), Paraná (PR), and Santa Catarina (SC) for fauna strandings. All stranded specimens are necropsied or rehabilitated. Here, we investigate spatio-temporal variability among 5169 loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta , stranded between 2015 and 2022, and discuss regional management implications. Weekly stranding rates among states ranged between 0.03 (RJ) and 0.54 (PR) C. caretta 100 km–1 and peaked during winter and spring—coinciding with concentrated regional penaeid-trawl effort. Almost all (99%) stranded C. caretta were dead and had advanced decomposition. Overall, there were biases towards female C. caretta (2:1), that increased during summer, and juveniles (2.2:1) across all states, especially in Paraná—encompassing an ecologically important and World Heritage-listed estuarine complex. Identified anthropogenic impacts among stranded C. caretta were low overall (14%) but biased towards fishing (8%) and greatest during winter and spring. Few (∼4%) C. caretta had ingested plastic or were entangled in marine debris. The data support prioritising the jurisdictional management of impacts across SP, PR, and SC during winter and spring, and in the presence of intensified regional trawling effort. Background: Elasmobranch populations are declining, predominantly driven by overfishing, and over a third of global sharks, rays, and chimeras are estimated to be threatened with extinction. In terms of trade, Brazil is ranked the eleventh-largest shark producer and the top importer of shark meat in the world. Research has shown that elasmobranchs are sold in Brazil under the name "cação" (a generic designation for cartilaginous fish) to overcome consumer resistance., Methodology and Results: This study used DNA barcoding to investigate the sale of sharks in the State of São Paulo during the COVID-19 lockdown. A total of 35 samples of "cação" were analysed, revealing six different shark species on sale, including Carcharhinus falciformis, Carcharhinus signatus, Carcharias taurus, Isurus oxyrinchus, and Isurus paucus, that are threatened with extinction according to the IUCN red list. This study demonstrates that vulnerable elasmobranchs are being commercialised under the label "cação" in the São Paulo State and Brazil., Conclusions: Comparison of shark products traded before and during the COVID-19 pandemic showed no significant difference, suggesting lockdown did not affect patterns of species commercialisation. The article focuses on the occurrence of the alien invasive loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus in the River basin in southern Brazil. Seven juveniles and one adult M. anguillicaudatus ranging from 63 to 131 mm standard length (SL) were collected between 2000 and 2008 in the shallowest parts of small forested streams, flooded areas, and channel margins of the upper and middle River basin.

Context: The blackspot shark (Carcharhinus sealei) is a small-bodied coastal shark often incidentally caught in fisheries across South-east Asia. Aims: This study aimed to document the species' biology, ecology, fisheries and markets to inform conservation. Methods: In total, 103 blackspot sharks from Indonesia (n = 101) and Singapore (n = 2) were examined to determine biological parameters (growth rate, age at maturity, reproductive traits and diet). An interview with a Singaporean seafood supplier gave insight to population trends, fisheries and markets. Key results: Males attained a maximum age of 9 years, the smallest mature individual measured 709-mm stretched total length (STL), with 50% reaching maturity at 6.15 years. Females attained a maximum age of 11 years, the smallest mature individual measured 730 mm STL, with 50% reaching maturity at 6.12 years. The species has an overall growth rate (k) of 0.37 year−1. Reproduction was asynchronous, with only two pups produced per litter. Crustaceans dominated the diet of juveniles, whereas bony fishes and cephalopods dominated the diets of adult males and adult females respectively. Conclusions: Blackspot sharks have a moderately fast growth rate, but a late age-at-maturity and a low fecundity. Diet differed between the sexes as well as adults and juveniles. Implications: The low fecundity and late maturity of blackspot sharks increase their vulnerability to exploitation. Blackspot sharks are now listed on CITES-Appendix II, but mortality may remain high because they are reportedly often caught incidentally. Blackspot sharks from Riau Islands, Indonesia, have a late maturity (~6 years old) and low fecundity (litters of two pups). Mature males primarily eat bony fishes, mature females primarily eat cephalopods, whereas juveniles primarily eat crustaceans. Although there is now good representation of shark-bitten bone in the fossil record, shark-bitten shark teeth are still exceedingly rare. A relatively small number of teeth of the Neogene megatooth shark Otodus megalodon (Otodontidae) preserve surface markings that were made when struck by the serrated cutting edge of another O. megalodon tooth. The serration marks are consistent with those of the ichnotaxon Knethichnus parallelum. That these shallowly penetrating surface trace fossils were made as one O. megalodon tooth struck another is confirmed by the preservation of fine parallel gouges made when the serrated cutting edge of one tooth impacted and raked the surface of the receiving tooth. The K. parallelum marks on O. megalodon teeth could have been unintentionally self-inflicted, the result of one tooth striking another in the opposing jaw during forceful occlusion, collateral damage from feeding, or aggressive O. megalodon-on-O. megalodon facial biting (i.e., either from active predatory cannibalism, a feeding frenzy during scavenging, or as a result of a territorial dispute to establish a feeding hierarchy). Endangered sharks and rays usually often lack basic information specific to conservation, such as population size. Previous studies have reconstructed shark and ray catch statistics between 1950 and 2019 for the southeast = south of Brazil, but lacking detail at the species level, because the catches were grouped by family, genus or even common name (e.g., skates and rays, Dasyatidae, Rhinobatos, Sphyrnidae, Squatinidae). In this study, we used proportions between species from scientific observer fishing trips and Dirichlet regression modelling to reclassify these categories. This model is a multivariate extension of beta regression and enables the modeling of asymmetric and heteroscedastic compositional data, allowing multinomial data to be obtained in a more informative way. The reconstruction of catches for unclassified data showed a massive dominance of the Squatinidae family until the late 1970s, when catches showed signs of decline. At the same time, the rays of the "emplastro" family showed a progressive increase from 2006 onwards. However, this scenario changed after the reclassification. The category Squatinidae was maintained almost exclusively by S. guggenheim, while 16 categories of species were observed within "emplastro" rays, many of which fall into "endangered", "vulnerable" and "critically endangered" criteria. These reconstructed series provide a more reliable scenario of the catches of thirty elasmobranch species in the southeast and south of Brazil and serve as baseline information for understanding the conservation status of these species. Body size is of fundamental importance to our understanding of extinct organisms. Physiology, ecology and life history are all strongly influenced by body size and shape, which ultimately determine how a species interacts with its environment. Reconstruction of body size and form in extinct animals provides insight into the dynamics underlying community composition and faunal turnover in past ecosystems and broad macroevolutionary trends. Many extinct animals are known only from incomplete remains, necessitating the use of anatomical proxies to reconstruct body size and form. Numerous limitations affecting the appropriateness of these proxies are often overlooked, leading to controversy and downstream inaccuracies in studies for which reconstructions represent key input data. In this perspective, we discuss four prominent case studies (Dunkleosteus, Helicoprion, Megalodon and Perucetus) in which proxy taxa have been used to estimate body size and shape from fragmentary remains. We synthesise the results of these and other studies to discuss nuances affecting the validity of taxon selection when reconstructing extinct organisms, as well as mitigation measures that can ensure the selection of the most appropriate proxy. We argue that these precautionary measures are necessary to maximise the robustness of reconstructions in extinct taxa for better evolutionary and ecological inferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The blackchin guitarfish Glaucostegus cemiculus has suffered severe declines and regional extirpation throughout its known distributions. While this species and its relative, the common guitarfish Rhinobatos rhinobatos, have been described in the Mediterranean Sea with co-occurring habitat ranges, no research has recorded the existence or extent of these two separate populations along the Israeli coastal waters. Along a particular coast in Israel, Ma’agan Michael, fishermen have reported annual observations of juvenile guitarfish between June to November for the last forty years. Based on these citizen-based observations themain research objective is to establish whether Ma’agan Michael fulfils all three criteria fromthe literature by Dr Michelle Heupel, allowing it to be acknowledged as a nursery ground for G. cemiculus. The methodology built for this objective integrates biological characteristics data with the identification of a recurrent seasonal distribution. Visual surveys exhibited a significantly higher abundance in Ma’agan Michael when compared to an adjacent area (Caesarea), with 2,096 recorded observations overall. Additionally, using a species-specific modified Catch and Release protocol, a total of 492 juveniles were captured with a beach seine net. During these capturing events, individuals were morphometrically measured and sampled for future genetic analyses. Out of these, 327 specimens were also fitted for PIT tags to track recaptures in subsequent captures. The highest abundance of neonates was caught from August to September each year (2017–2019), and all individuals captured during this study were identified in the field as G. cemiculus, ranging from 20–35 cm in length (85% of captures). Many specimens had an umbilical cord scar (n = 88), with a large percentage possessing visual remains of the yolk sac. Predatory fishes often have strong top-down effects on coastal marine ecosystems and are considered a priority for conservation and management. Predator activity can influence prey distribution, abundance, and foraging behaviors, and is likely to influence habitat by impacting ecological and environmental characteristics as well as presence of competitor species. There are knowledge gaps of the effects of functional diversity, non-consumptive predator association, and environmental effects on fish assemblages, particularly within the Greater Caribbean region. In this study, effects of apex marine predatory fishes on diversity and abundance of prey ichthyofaunal communities were examined in putative predation low-risk (north side = lagoon) and high-risk (south side = flat) areas around South Bimini Island, The Bahamas. Baited remote underwater video surveys (BRUVs, n = 100 sites) deployed in the two nearshore habitat types captured abundance and potential predator-prey interactions, which were compared to assess potential risk effects within low-risk and high-risk habitats. Results showed a difference in ichthyofaunal communities between the two habitats, with teleost abundance highest on the south side. Depth, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were significantly linked to biotic assemblages. There were no differences in flight (escape) behavior of prey from predator (sharks versus great barracuda), suggesting that predator avoidance was a minimal factor in ichthyofaunal community structures. In the rapidly developing Greater Caribbean region, knowledge of ichthyofaunal communities and predator-prey interactions in different coastal habitats can better inform management regarding ecological changes over time and between island locations. Stranding events of marine mammals provide valuable opportunities to study their biology, health, and causes for mortality, such as interactions with predators. Here we document the stranding of a deceased adult spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) with a shark bite (possibly an injury) on Utila Island, Honduras. Information on how the trophic ecology of predators shapes their movement patterns and space-use is fundamental to understanding ecological processes across organisational levels. Despite this, studies combining spatial and trophic ecology to determine how prey preference and/or resource availability shape space use are lacking in marine predators as these can occur at low density and are often difficult to track over extended periods. Furthermore, many exhibit behavioural variability within species and among closely related, sympatric species adding further complexity. We applied a context-focused, multimethod approach to the understudied great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) to test if movement and home ranges relate to prey preference and availability. Movement data from satellite and acoustic telemetry in Queensland, Australia, were combined with stable-isotope analysis, drone surveys, and videos of hunting behaviour. Limited dispersal, and small home ranges in S. mokarran were linked to trophic specialisation on stingray prey. Drone surveys and videos showed predation events on stingrays and demonstrated high, year-round availability of this prey in shallow, inshore habitats, which may allow the majority of S. mokarran to remain resident. This affinity for inshore habitats suggests that critical life-history requirements are performed over local or regional scales, although some larger movements were evident. These results were interpreted in comparison to the well-studied bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), which showed reliance on pelagic food webs. Carcharhinus leucas had high individual variability in movement, with both large-scale migrations and residency. This could indicate that only some individuals are locally sustained on dynamic, pelagic food webs, while others undergo large-scale excursions over distant habitats. The specialised foraging of S. mokarran indicates they play an apex predator role in shallow, inshore habitats, potentially shaping space-use, and foraging behaviour of batoids. As inshore habitats are disproportionately affected by anthropogenic stressors, S. mokarran's trophic specialisation and limited demographic connectivity may make the species particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic threats. Understanding the ecological role of species with overlapping distributions is central to inform ecosystem management. Here we describe the diet, trophic level and habitat use of three sympatric stingrays, Hypanus guttatus, H. marianae and H. berthalutzae, through combined stomach content and stable isotope (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) analyses. Our integrated approach revealed that H. guttatus is a mesopredator that feeds on a diverse diet of benthic and epibenthic marine and estuarine organisms, principally bivalve molluscs, Alpheus shrimp and teleost fishes. Isotopic data supported movement of this species between marine and estuarine environments. H. berthalutzae is also a marine generalist feeder, but feeds primarily on teleost fishes and cephalopods, and consequently occupies a higher trophic level. In contrast, H. marianae is a mesopredator specialized on shrimps and polychaetas occurring only in the marine environment and occupying a low niche breadth. While niche overlap occurred, the three stingrays utilized the same prey resources at different rates and occupied distinct trophic niches, potentially limiting competition for resources and promoting coexistence. The present study compares the trophic ecology of two guitarfishes (Pseudobatos percellens and Pseudobatos horkelii) from the continental shelf of the São Paulo State, Brazil, caught by the bottom pair trawls between 2007 and 2009. These two sympatric species are under different threat categories, "Vulnerable" and "Critically Endangered," respectively, according to Brazilian agencies. Thus, any study considering trophic ecology parameters is pivotal in understanding the trophic ecology role of such species in the ecosystem. The authors analysed 500 stomachs of P. percellens and 108 of P. horkelii, quantifying with dietary indexes: numerical (%N), gravimetric (%W), frequency of occurrence (%FO) and the prey-specific index of relative importance (%PSIRI). For P. percellens and P. horkelii, 26 and 14 different prey items were found, respectively. Crustacea and Teleostei were the most important prey items for both species, indicating a specialist feeding behaviour due to their low niche amplitude. The results provide evidence related to ontogenetic dietary shift in P. percellens and individual-level diet specialization in both species. Endemic to the south-west Atlantic Ocean, the shortnose guitarfish (Zapteryx brevirostris) is a small species, classified as endangered by the IUCN. Although reproduction in captivity has been successful for some species, a range of factors can limit the success of captive breeding programmes for elasmobranchs. In Brazil, the Ubatuba Aquarium was the first public aquarium to reproduce small-sized elasmobranchs. Since 2018, at least five parturition events have been recorded for Z. brevirostris at the institution. From a total of 13 live neonates that rearing was attempted, the mean ± standard error of weight, total length (TL) and disc width at birth were 17.47 ± 1.6 g, 13.25 ± 0.7 cm and 6.53 ± 0.2 cm, respectively. The mean weight as well as mean TL were higher for females at all births, with 26.15 g and 15.07 cm for females in comparison with 17.09 g and 13.94 cm for males. Considering the increasing risk of extinction that the species is facing, age and growth studies are fundamental for the success of conservation, improving the knowledge of Z. brevirostris life cycle so that a more efficient and sustainable management can be carried out. Threatened shark species are caught in large numbers by artisanal and commercial fisheries and traded globally. Monitoring both which shark species are caught and sold in fisheries, and the export of CITES-restricted products, are essential in reducing illegal fishing. Current methods for species identification rely on visual examination by experts or DNA barcoding techniques requiring specialist laboratory facilities and trained personnel. The need for specialist equipment and/or input from experts means many markets are currently not monitored. We have developed a paper-based Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) to facilitate identification of three threatened and CITES-listed sharks, bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus), pelagic thresher (A. pelagicus) and shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) at market source. DNA was successfully extracted from shark meat and fin samples and combined with DNA amplification and visualisation using Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) on the LOC. This resulted in the successful identification of the target species of sharks in under an hour, with a working positive and negative control. The LOC provided a simple "yes" or "no" result via a colour change from pink to yellow when one of the target species was present. The LOC serves as proof-of-concept (PoC) for field-based species identification as it does not require specialist facilities. It can be used by non-scientifically trained personnel, especially in areas where there are suspected high frequencies of mislabelling or for the identification of dried shark fins in seizures. The presence of wild fish in and around aquaculture habitats is often assumed a response to food resources within these habitats, either from input feed, the presence of cultured species, and/or the assemblage of biofouling that naturally colonises aquaculture structures. The nutritional quality of the food resources consumed by wild fish in aquaculture habitats is also important in determining their nutritional condition and subsequent productivity. Few studies have investigated the nutritional quality of prey in aquaculture habitats, and these have mostly focused on fed aquaculture by tracking manufactured fish pellets into the diets of wild fish. However, in non‐fed aquaculture, the assemblage of cultured and biofouling species may also provide a nutritional benefit to fish feeding in these habitats. The Australasian snapper, Chrysophrys auratus, are commonly present as adults within coastal mussel farms in New Zealand and tend to become a resident species. This study investigated the nutritional quality of the gut contents of snapper in soft‐sediment habitats within and outside of New Zealand green‐lipped mussel farms. Total lipid, protein, carbohydrate and total calorific content were measured from the gut contents of snapper sampled from mussel farm and natural (i.e. control) habitats. Snapper in mussel farms had double the dietary intake of lipid (16% vs. 8%) from consuming lipid‐rich bivalves and barnacles which are in abundance in mussel farms. Higher lipid intake can contribute to improved nutritional condition, reproduction and growth in snapper. However, the higher dietary lipid intake of snapper in mussel farms did not increase their overall body condition (i.e. Fulton condition index). This may be due to the coarse nature of this measure, or the use of the additional lipid in more rapid somatic growth or reproductive outputs, possibilities that warrant examination through further research. Overall, this study shows for the first time the potential ecosystem benefits of shellfish aquaculture in provisioning nutritionally valuable prey for coastal fish populations. This study shows how YouTube™, a popular video website, is a powerful tool to document and improve our ability to manage freshwater pet release in Brazil. Based on a series of 24 videos chosen randomly using 19 standardized keywords posted by pet-keeping YouTubers between January 1, 2020 and March 20, 2023 (650 h of searching time), we documented the intentional release of 12 translocated and five non-native species involving 11 fish species, two freshwater stingray species, two freshwater turtle species, one freshwater crab species, and one crayfish species in multiple watersheds/ecoregions of Brazil. This is the first record of intentional introduction for 17 species in Brazilian inland waters. The main drivers behind pet release were excessive growth, "agreeableness" (i.e., compassion, pet owner's reluctance to euthanize the animal), and aggressive behavior. The videos documented the release of multiple freshwater pets in numerous freshwater ecosystems. Pet releases were predominantly into rural freshwater ecosystems rather than urban, with an introduction hotspot identified in the Southeast region. This finding is important because pet release is more common in urban than rural areas. While colonization pressure (i.e., number of translocated/non-native species that each pet owner released) was high, overall propagule pressure (i.e., number of individuals of a translocated/non-native species released into a region) was low with a total of 49 individuals released over the monitored period. Proactive management is key in reducing the incidence of pet release in Brazil, attainable through transforming pet shop owners into disseminators of correct information about species traits. Environmental authorities should create "Non-native Pet Amnesty Day" to provide the opportunity for people to surrender their non-native aquatic pets; YouTubers can engage in awareness actions on YouTube™ such as show the negative effects that aquatic pets can cause if introduced into the wild; Brazilian scientists turn into "science YouTubers" and provide arguments that can be used to disseminate reliable scientific messages about freshwater pet release. Reef fisheries are multispecific and employ a variety of fishing gears across marine environments, even in remote areas. This intricate and multifaceted nature of reef fisheries is often overlooked in management strategies, leading to global management failures. In Brazil, information about reef fisheries is often scarce and scattered. This stems from inadequate policies and an unrecognized societal value of reef fisheries. Here, we combine nationwide reef fish landing data (1950–2015) with an extensive literature review on Brazilian reef fisheries. We explore temporal and spatial patterns in total landings, species traits, functional diversity and composition to understand the current scenario, identify drivers of change and highlight information gaps. Brazilian reef fisheries rapidly increased in landing volume, number of targeted species and exploited traits in the 1980's, despite mainly targeting carnivorous fish (groupers, snappers, jacks and trevallies). Exploited functional space increased over time, mainly due to the incorporation of smaller and lower-trophic level species that gradually were added to the pool of fished species. Local and international markets have been the main drivers behind these patterns, while subsistence fishing is marginal. Lack of proper management and enforcement of existing regulations have led to population declines, dwindling total catches since the early 2000's, and numerous threatened species. Artisanal fishing accounts for the majority of catches, raising concern on the social impacts of degraded reef fisheries. We highlight the urgent need for adequate fishing statistics, and the use/application of science-based management and policy actions to secure productive fisheries and healthy reef ecosystems in Brazil.
