Has social reproduction through families preserved unequal political participation amongst the working class in post-industrial society? This article builds on both political and sociological traditions to consider the family as a tenacious social structure that reproduces political participation from one generation to the next. In order to answer this empirically, the study uses a longitudinal panel data of political behaviour across three biological generations in the United States (1965–1997). The findings show that respondents who grew up in working-class families are less likely to vote as adults regardless of whether they have working-class occupations or not. The transmission of un-equal participation is partially mediated by the voting behaviour of the parent who models this behaviour to their children. The study also shows that the second generation of respondents transmits low political participation to their offspring in the third generation. This study implies that occupational structures of a past industrial society are still politically relevant and that inequalities in political participation remain a legacy amongst the biological descendants of working-class families from the 1960s. Evolutionary theory predicts that social status and fertility will be positively related. It also predicts that the relationship between status and fertility will differ for men and women. This is particularly likely in modern societies given evidence that females face greater trade-offs between status and resource acquisition and fertility than males. This paper tests these hypotheses using newly released data from the 2014 wave of the Survey of Income and Program Participation by the US Census, which has the first complete measures of fertility and number of childbearing partners for a large, representative, national probability sample of men and women and also contains comprehensive measures of economic status as measured by personal and family resources, including income from all sources and all assets. Multivariate analyses show that personal income is positively associated with total fertility and number of childbearing unions for men only. For men, personal net worth is positively associated with number of childbearing unions; it is also positively associated with fertility for married men with a spouse present. These findings support evolutionary predictions of a positive relationship between status, access to mates, and reproductive success for males. Whereas personal income and personal net worth are negatively associated with total fertility and number of childbearing unions for women, family income (net of personal income) is positively associated with total fertility for women. For married men living with a spouse, family income (net of personal income) is negatively associated with total fertility. These findings are consistent with evolutionary theory given the existence of greater trade-offs between production and reproduction for women in an advanced industrial society. An essay is presented that examines what are identified as the competing postindustrial frameworks of choice and working family for family income and the gender role of working mothers in the U.S. during the administration of U.S. president Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, particularly focusing on private sector and public welfare solutions to social and political questions.

This research examines the new divides and changing structure of the modern city and metropolis. Since the classic Chicago School models, the urban form of the metropolis has been conceptualized as a divided space, where affluent suburbs surround a less-advantaged and denser urban core. More recently, the concept of a great inversion has been advanced to capture the return of more advantaged groups to the urban center and the outward shift of poverty and disadvantage to the suburbs. To gain insight into contemporary urban form, we undertake a descriptive mapping exercise of the residential locations of three major classes—the advantaged class of knowledge, professionals and creative workers, the declining blue collar working class, and the less advantaged service class of workers—across a dozen of America’s largest metro areas and their core cities. We find a pattern of class division and urban form that we refer to as the “patchwork metropolis,” where class divides cut across city and suburb alike. These divides appear to be conditioned by the location of the advantaged class that occupies and clusters around the most functional and desirable areas of the metropolis—close to the urban core, around transit, near knowledge institutions, and along areas of natural amenities. The less-advantaged classes are shunted into the spaces leftover or in between—either traditionally disadvantaged areas of the inner city or the fringes of the suburban and exurban periphery. In the 2014 horror filmIt Follows,a teenage woman is terrorized by a fatal curse that passes from victim-to-victim via sexual intercourse. The subject of the curse is relentlessly pursued by vacant-minded assassins that take the form of friends, loved ones, and strangers. The film is set near the infamous dividing-line of Detroit’s 8 Mile Road, between what remains of the suburban working-class and the sacrifice zone of post-industrial urban triage. I argue thatIt Followsconfronts audiences with the spectral manifestation of precarity: the deliberate and unequal redistribution of human fragility to populations who are the most socially and economically vulnerable. First, the generic shift from a specific monster to an anonymous and relentless force redeploys horror convention to draw attention to the conditions that induce horror within the prevailing socioeconomic order. Second, the film renders such precarity visible by contrasting the mise-en-scene of the suburban enclave with zones of postindustrial ruin; the relative comfort of the former predicated on the vulnerability of the latter. The film maps a landscape of postindustrial ruin, enacting a visual and narrative critique ofthanatopolitics, the biopolitical organization of death under late capitalism. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article summarizes the goal of this special issue of the Journal of Urban History (JUH). Offering a variety of perspectives—ranging from the role of impromptu artists to that of immigrants and small, independent communities of activists—it details unconventional solutions offered for reviving the economically declining postindustrial American city. Akin to the articles included in this volume, this essay emphasizes ways in which revitalization can take place without necessarily engaging the top–down missions of governmental agencies, large corporations, or costly urban planning. As this introduction demonstrates, most articles in this volume reflect on current and recent developments in major postindustrial American cities. As such, this issue of JUH hopes to offer fresh perspectives on the role of ad hoc agents, a topic rightly deserving of further attention in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article examines modern conceptualization of the rhetoric's teaching traditions in the American educational system. There is a clear link between the demise of the "rhetorical culture" and introduction of the newest media technologies in the educational process. We can see the importance of the "rhetorical culture" in the American teaching doctrine. This importance of rhetoric in the educational system is said to be because of the academical tendencies such as appeal to classicism and the philosophy of language. I effect, they combined their powers to re-establish the role of the rhetoric. It is also important to remember that the American system of education was formed in the beginning of the 20th century from the philosophy and the pragmatism teachings. In the beginning of the 20th century the introduction of the rhetoric courses was mainly due to the desire to save national political traditions regarding democracy and patriotism. Verbal articulations were important part of the political culture. It is also known that in the USA having various religious talks was well established tradition. American educational system is one of the most developed in the world and was one of the first who started to realize the potential of the electronic means of communication. American theorists looking at the culture through the prism of communication. This article examines the transformation of the conceptualization and the particularities of the American education due to arrival of the "new media". We can also see a shift in the way the "rhetoric paradigm of culture" is defined due to the new challenges to the system of education and to the culture as a whole posed by the the "new media". The contemporary American West is undergoing a round of rapid restructuring, which has been characterized as the shift from landscapes of production to landscapes of consumption. Here I propose that a more effective description of current changes, which allows us to retain focus on the relevant inter- and intra-class-based dynamics of an ongoing capitalist-Modernity, is as a result of the transition from the prior dominance of a regime of production/consumption of commodities/natural resources to the increasing ascendancy of the production/consumption of 'experiences'. The rising dominance of this regime is, in large part, the result of the locally dramatic in-migration by ex-urban members of the post -industrial middle class to the 'amenity-rich' counties of the region. This process of rural gentrification exacerbates preexisting social, geographic, and environmental disparities within the region, creating an 'archipelago' of changing communities commonly referred to as the 'New' West. Drawing on almost two years of ethnographic research from one such 'island' community in south-central Montana, I describe local-level change between the relative primacy of the two regimes of production/consumption.
