In many parts of the world, higher education is viewed as a prime "motor" for the development of a knowledge-based economy. Under the banner of this "new economy", higher education policies, programmes and practices have been increasingly co-opted and shaped by wider geo-strategic political and economic interests. This paper explores three, interlinked, higher education policy spaces--in Europe, the United States, and Australia. It explores how the growing range of educational initiatives at the European level has affected--both directly and indirectly--American and Australian policymaking in higher education. The European higher education project, which is increasingly perceived as having some significance to the global economy, has set off a series of dynamic reactions in both Australia and the United States, which is leading to multiple new logics and new imaginaries about the global higher education landscape. Through this, a more integrated and relational global system of higher education is emerging. (Contains 17 notes.)

The article discusses various ethical boundaries on an American lawyer's use of social media, focusing on the American Bar Association's Rules of Professional Conduct, the informal discovery process in the U.S., and prohibitions against fraud and deception. State and local bar associations in America are mentioned, along with the ethical aspects of communications with legally-represented parties using social networking services such as Twitter and Facebook. U.S. legal practices are examined.

Abstract: Field studies were conducted in 2008 and 2009 at three locations on the Texas Southern High Plains to evaluate grain sorghum response to saflufenacil alone or in combination with dimethenamid. Hybrids ‘Pioneer 85G01’ and ‘Dekalb 44-20’ were planted and saflufenacil at 0.5–0.70 kg ai ha−1 or saflufenacil + dimethenamid at 0.05 + 0.44 to 0.2 + 1.75 kg ai ha−1 was applied preemergence. Injury to sorghum increased with increasing rates at all locations. Saflufenacil + dimethenamid was less injurious than saflufenacil applied alone at similar rates. ‘Pioneer 85G01’ was more susceptible to herbicide injury than ‘Dekalb 44-20.’ Differences in soil texture and organic matter likely contributed to saflufenacil-induced injury across locations. Research on the influence of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) on academic advising is limited. Using a comparative case study method, I respond to this research gap by exploring how the standards influence practices of academic advising programs. Study results indicate that participating advisors knew little about the standards, practices were naturally aligned with the standards through the services provided, and the standards influenced programs when intentionally implemented. The article examines the operation of a visiting nurse service at Henry Street Settlement nursing facility in the health care industry in the U.S. The facility was established by young graduate nurses from the elite New York Training School for Nurses. Nurses from the facility made a huge number of home visits in a month, caring for patients with a wide variety of acute illnesses.

Developments in diagnostics reform legislation in the United States are occurring at a rapid pace. The framework for future regulatory oversight of clinical laboratory testing is currently under intensive debate among stakeholders that represent patients, practitioners, laboratories, diagnostic manufacturers, and regulators. The importance of clinical laboratory test standardization is a key component of any plan for regulatory reform. A laboratory-developed test is performed in a specific laboratory setting, often led by clinical laboratory professionals who possess specific expertise for developing and running the test to fill a clinical need. A test commercially marketed as an in vitro diagnostic kit is designed to operate across a spectrum of laboratory settings in laboratories with a range of expertise. Both types of tests are stringently regulated, laboratory-developed tests by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and in vitro diagnostic kits by the US Food and Drug Administration. Interlaboratory comparisons of laboratory-developed tests have been published, demonstrating highly reproducible results. Comparisons of laboratory-developed tests with in vitro diagnostic kits have also found high concordance. Several important clinical laboratory test standardization projects are currently under way. The US Food and Drug Administration has acknowledged the need for such standardization.
