Dialogue about Catholic identity has been taking place at American Catholic colleges and universities since the publication of Ex Corde Ecclesiae in 1990. That student affairs professionals do their work within the context of the mission of the university is a concept that has been accepted from the earliest stages of the establishment of student affairs as an independent profession in the beginning of the twentieth century. For the past 20 years, student affairs professionals at Catholic colleges and universities have been building their capacity for mission integration in a variety of professional development seminars and institutes, largely supported by the work of Catholic higher education associations and sponsoring religious communities, with the intention of increasing the presence and integration of the Catholic mission and religious charism at the institutions in which they work. The Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities (The Principles) are the latest mission-driven resource to be developed at a national level in support of the continuing efforts by student affairs professionals and others working at Catholic colleges and universities to build capacity for mission-driven work. This article describes the development of The Principles as a mission-centered resource for student affairs professionals at Catholic colleges and universities. This article further presents the findings of a survey of presidents and senior student affairs officers (SSAOs) at Catholic colleges and universities in the United States and Canada regarding how The Principles are being utilized at their institutions to create mission-driven practices in student affairs work and to form mission-knowledgeable student affairs professionals. This article concludes with a discussion about the efficacy of The Principles to be used in continuing efforts across the diversity of institutions that constitute Catholic higher education in productive and meaningful ways to build a culture of mission integrated institutions.

Integrating a perennial forage grass like bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) into the traditional rotation of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) increases yields and reduces irrigation needs in the Southeast United States. However, the long‐term effects of this sod‐based rotation (SBR) on soil properties remain unclear. Eighteen years after establishing SBR and the traditional rotation, we collected samples to a depth of 120 cm in 30‐cm increments and measured soil carbon and other soil properties (e.g., Mehlich‐extractable nutrients). Soil C was 6% higher with SBR in the top 30 cm of soil after 18 years, with no impact on soil C in deeper soil layers. Similarly, there was no effect of SBR on other soil properties (soil texture, pH, and Mehlich‐extractable P and Mg), except for lower soil K in SBR. Our results indicate a limited effect of SBR on soil C and other properties in this system where SBR is not grazed and where strip tillage and cover cropping were implemented in both rotations. Modeling environmental sound levels over continental scales is difficult due to the variety of geospatial environments. Moreover, current continental-scale models depend upon machine learning and therefore face additional challenges due to limited acoustic training data. In previous work, an ensemble of machine learning models was used to predict environmental sound levels in the contiguous United States using a training set composed of 51 geospatial layers (downselected from 120) and acoustic data from 496 geographic sites from Pedersen, Transtrum, Gee, Lympany, James, and Salton [JASA Express Lett. 1(12), 122401 (2021)]. In this paper, the downselection process, which is based on factors such as data quality and inter-feature correlations, is described in further detail. To investigate additional dimensionality reduction, four different feature selection methods are applied to the 51 layers. Leave-one-out median absolute deviation cross-validation errors suggest that the number of geospatial features can be reduced to 15 without significant degradation of the model's predictive error. However, ensemble predictions demonstrate that feature selection results are sensitive to variations in details of the problem formulation and, therefore, should elicit some skepticism. These results suggest that more sophisticated dimensionality reduction techniques are necessary for problems with limited training data and different training and testing distributions. Objectives: Describe contemporary ECMO utilization patterns among patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and examine clinical outcomes among TBI patients requiring ECMO. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Premier Healthcare Database (PHD) between January 2016 to June 2020. Subjects: Adult patients with TBI who were mechanically ventilated and stratified by exposure to ECMO. Results: Among patients exposed to ECMO, we examined the following clinical outcomes: hospital LOS, ICU LOS, duration of mechanical ventilation, and hospital mortality. Of our initial cohort (n = 59,612), 118 patients (0.2%) were placed on ECMO during hospitalization. Most patients were placed on ECMO within the first 2 days of admission (54.3%). Factors associated with ECMO utilization included younger age (OR 0.96, 95% CI (0.95–0.97)), higher injury severity score (ISS) (OR 1.03, 95% CI (1.01–1.04)), vasopressor utilization (2.92, 95% CI (1.90–4.48)), tranexamic acid utilization (OR 1.84, 95% CI (1.12–3.04)), baseline comorbidities (OR 1.06, 95% CI (1.03–1.09)), and care in a teaching hospital (OR 3.04, 95% CI 1.31–7.05). A moderate degree (ICC = 19.5%) of variation in ECMO use was explained at the individual hospital level. Patients exposed to ECMO had longer median (IQR) hospital and ICU length of stay (LOS) [26 days (11–36) versus 9 days (4–8) and 19.5 days (8–32) versus 5 days (2–11), respectively] and a longer median (IQR) duration of mechanical ventilation [18 days (8–31) versus 3 days (2–8)]. Patients exposed to ECMO experienced a hospital mortality rate of 33.9%, compared to 21.2% of TBI patients unexposed to ECMO. Conclusions: ECMO utilization in mechanically ventilated patients with TBI is rare, with significant variation across hospitals. The impact of ECMO on healthcare utilization and hospital mortality following TBI is comparable to non-TBI conditions requiring ECMO. Further research is necessary to better understand the role of ECMO following TBI and identify patients who may benefit from this therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This exploratory case study examines the participation of Native American students in study abroad and institutional policies and practices that either impede or enhance participation. The study surveys all Native students enrolled at the American university that produces the most Native graduates with bachelor's degrees. Although Native students value the benefits of study abroad, the study finds that they face a unique confluence of factors that limit participation. The role of Native students' social networks (family, tribal members, friends, Native advisors) is found to be prominent in deliberations about participation. Background: Endogenous apolipoprotein (apo) E mediates neuroinflammatory responses and recovery after brain injury. Exogenously administered apoE-mimetic peptides effectively penetrate the central nervous system compartment and downregulate acute inflammation. CN-105 is a novel apoE-mimetic pentapeptide with excellent evidence of functional and histological improvement in preclinical models of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The CN-105 in participants with Acute supraTentorial intraCerebral Hemorrhage (CATCH) trial is a first-in-disease-state multicenter open-label trial evaluating safety and feasability of CN-105 administration in patients with acute primary supratentorial ICH. Methods: Eligible patients were aged 30–80 years, had confirmed primary supratentorial ICH, and were able to intiate CN-105 administration (1.0 mg/kg every 6 h for 72 h) within 12 h of symptom onset. A priori defined safety end points, including hematoma volume, pharmacokinetics, and 30-day neurological outcomes, were analyzed. For clinical outcomes, CATCH participants were compared 1:1 with a closely matched contemporary ICH cohort through random selection. Hematoma volumes determined from computed tomography images on days 0, 1, 2, and 5 and ordinal modified Rankin Scale score at 30 days after ICH were compared. Results: In 38 participants enrolled across six study sites in the United States, adverse events occurred at an expected rate without increase in hematoma expansion or neurological deterioration. CN-105 treatment had an odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 2.69 (1.31–5.51) for lower 30-day modified Rankin Scale score, after adjustment for ICH score, sex, and race/ethnicity, as compared with a matched contemporary cohort. Conclusions: CN-105 administration represents an excellent translational candidate for treatment of acute ICH because of its safety, dosing feasibility, favorable pharmacokinetics, and possible improvement in neurological recovery. Thomas Groome suggests good teaching begins with experience in particular times and places. This article suggests the hermeneutic central to shared praxis provides a helpful lens through which to understand the faithful but critical dialog that can be at the heart of disaffiliation. Background: Prior studies of patients in the intensive care unit have suggested racial/ethnic variation in end-of-life decision making. We sought to evaluate whether race/ethnicity modifies the implementation of comfort measures only status (CMOs) in patients with spontaneous, non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).Methods: We analyzed data from the Ethnic/Racial Variations of Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ERICH) study, a prospective cohort study specifically designed to enroll equal numbers of white, black, and Hispanic subjects. ICH patients aged ≥ 18 years were enrolled in ERICH at 42 hospitals in the USA from 2010 to 2015. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were implemented to evaluate the association between race/ethnicity and CMOs after adjustment for potential confounders.Results: A total of 2705 ICH cases (912 black, 893 Hispanic, 900 white) were included in this study (mean age 62 [SD 14], female sex 1119 [41%]). CMOs patients comprised 276 (10%) of the entire cohort; of these, 64 (7%) were black, 79 (9%) Hispanic, and 133 (15%) white (univariate p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, compared to whites, blacks were half as likely to be made CMOs (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.34-0.75; p = 0.001), and no statistically significant difference was observed for Hispanics. All three racial/ethnic groups had similar mortality rates at discharge (whites 12%, blacks 9%, and Hispanics 10%; p = 0.108). Other factors independently associated with CMOs included age (p < 0.001), premorbid modified Rankin Scale (p < 0.001), dementia (p = 0.008), admission Glasgow Coma Scale (p = 0.009), hematoma volume (p < 0.001), intraventricular hematoma volume (p < 0.001), lobar (p = 0.032) and brainstem (p < 0.001) location and endotracheal intubation (p < 0.001).Conclusions: In ICH, black patients are less likely than white patients to have CMOs. However, in-hospital mortality is similar across all racial/ethnic groups. Further investigation is warranted to better understand the causes and implications of racial disparities in CMO decisions. Purpose: Job satisfaction plays a large role in enhancing retention and minimizing loss of physicians from careers in academic medicine. The authors explored the effect of learning communities (LCs) on the faculty members' job satisfaction. Methods: Between October 2011 and May 2012, the authors surveyed 150 academic clinical faculty members serving as LC mentors for students at five US medical schools. Factor analysis was used to explore satisfaction themes and relationships between these themes and other characteristics. Results: Factor analysis revealed two major sources of this satisfaction: a Campus Engagement factor (e.g., feeling happier, improved sense of community, better communication skills, and feeling more productive) and a skills factor (e.g., improved clinical skills, being a better doctor). Higher Campus Engagement factor satisfaction was associated with less desire to leave the learning community ( p = 0.01) and more FTE support for role in LC ( p = 0.01). Higher skills factor satisfaction was associated with the school that provided more structured faculty development ( p = 0.0001). Conclusion: Academic clinical faculty members reported serving as a mentor in an LC was a strong source of job satisfaction. In this essay, I challenge the conceptual and normative arguments of Andrew Rehfeld’s The Concept of Constituency. I argue that Rehfeld conflates two distinct concepts of constituency as a result of errors in his normative argument for random, permanent constituencies. In response, I carefully distinguish the two concepts of objective constituency (the grouping of citizens into geographic or other electoral rolls through parametric action) and subjective constituency (the formation of cohesive voting blocs to elect a representative through strategic and communicative action between constituents and candidates). Distinguishing between objective and subjective constituency allows me to identify the shortcomings in the normative analyses of democratic constituencies proffered by Lisa Disch and Thomas Pogge. I then propose the use of random, permanent constituencies, each of which elects five representatives through the single transferable vote. This facilitates the representation of racial and ethnic minorities, while encouraging constituency deliberation aimed at the national interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Americans of all backgrounds fervently proclaim their rights to privacy in a myriad of circumstances. This has become a particularly relevant subject for contemporary Americans given the ongoing "Overseas Contingency Operation" and certain resultant legislative and executive measures which have provided governmental entities with enhanced, and ever more invasive, powers of surveillance and access to traditionally private information. This is very worrisome, particularly since our foundational legal document, the United States Constitution, makes no express mention of a right to privacy for citizens. The American conception of the "right to be let alone" represents a stark contrast to the Canadian and European approaches to this critical aspect of individual liberty, and ultimately offers individual Americans markedly less privacy protection for their personal information, choices and activities. The Sixth Amendment gives a defendant the right to control his defense and the right to a lawyer's assistance. A lawyer's assistance, however, sometimes interferes with a defendant's control over his case. As a result, the Supreme Court, over time, has had to delineate the spheres of authority that pertain to counsel and defendant respectively. The Court has not yet decisively assigned control over mitigating evidence to either counsel or defendant. This Note argues that counsel should control the presentation of mitigating evidence during capital sentencing. First, and most importantly, decisions concerning the presentation of mitigating evidence are best characterized as strategic, and the Sixth Amendment right to counsel allocates strategic decisions to attorneys. Second, the criminal justice system's need for reliable and legitimate outcomes--a need that reaches its zenith during capital sentencing--outweighs a capital defendant's limited claims to autonomy. Abstract: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating and common admitting diagnosis to intensive care units in the USA. Despite advances in critical care, patients with ICH often experience early neurological deterioration (END) in the first 72 hours after admission due to a variety of factors, including hematoma and cerebral edema evolution. The purpose of this study was to determine factors associated with END after ICH. Using the Duke University Hospital Neuroscience Critical Care Unit Database, we retrospectively identified patients with an admitting diagnosis of supratentorial ICH from January to December 2010, verified by CT imaging. END was defined as a decrease in the Glasgow Coma Scale score of ⩾3 or death within the first 72 hours after hemorrhage. The chi-squared or t-test analysis was used to compare the groups, as appropriate. Multiple logistical regression modeling was performed to test for associations between likely predictors of END. Of the 89 subjects admitted with supratentorial ICH, we included 83 in the analysis based on complete datasets. Of these, 31 experienced END within 72 hours after onset of symptoms. ICH score, presence of midline shift on imaging, and white blood cell (WBC) count were used in a regression model for predicting END. WBC count demonstrated the greatest association with END. Patients with ICH are prone to END within the first few days after hemorrhage. Elevated WBC count appears predictive of deterioration. These data demonstrate that heightened inflammatory state after ICH may be related to early deterioration after injury. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Several normative political theorists argue for racially descriptive representation, or for blacks to represent blacks. I contend that if theorists believe that blacks deserve additional measures to improve their substantive political representation, then they should prioritize the creation of racial constituencies independently of whether such constituencies elect black representatives. Prioritizing racial constituency circumvents essentialism within descriptive representation and better reflects the role of electoral authorization and accountability in generating trust between representatives and constituents. As a result, descriptive representation becomes one of several criteria (along with other identity markers, ideological proximity, and general competence and trustworthiness) to be applied by a racial constituency in selecting a preferable representative. Ultimately, prioritizing racial constituency allows normative theorists to affirm, without philosophical contradiction, the existence of black districts that elect nonblack representatives; contain black ideological minorities; exhibit diverse political interests; reflect shifting electoral constituencies; and elect representatives with divergent representational styles. Though many socio-legal scholars have criticized those measures that deny convicted felons the right to vote, few have challenged the statutes that withhold a convicted felon's opportunity to sit on a jury. A majority of US jurisdictions bar felons from jury service permanently, creating a class of citizens defined and punished by the criminal justice system but unable to impact its function. This essay considers the invisibility of felon jury exclusion, notes its unlikely supporters, and asserts that by preventing convicted felons from taking part in civic processes, authorities work against reentry initiatives. Previous college impact studies attempt to estimate the impact of college on African American collegians as a whole. That is, most researchers study Black students as if they represent a monolithic group with similar inputs, experiences, and outcomes. Yet, a growing body of research provides compelling evidence that there are significant within group differences. Using three principles of good practices in undergraduate education defined by Chickering and Gamson (AAHE Bulletin 39:3–7, ), this study examined differences in African American males’ ( N = 149) engagement by institutional type. A single significant predictor was found; Black men attending master’s institutions have a significant advantage over their counterparts at liberal arts colleges with respect to cooperation among students, controlling for an array of confounding factors. This study provides empirical support for the use of good practices in undergraduate education, particularly among African American men, and has important implications for future practice, policy, and research. One approach used to help find missing children is to place posters of them at the exits of supermarkets. The present research addresses the question of how effective that approach is likely to be. Posters of 8 missing children were displayed on a bulletin board at a cooperating grocery store. Customers leaving the store completed a survey and took a recognition memory test for the children. Most customers thought the problem of missing children was an important issue. However, the majority of customers also reported either not looking at the posters or only briefly looking at the posters. Recognition memory for children depicted in the posters did not reliably differ from chance. It appears that there is much room for improvement when it comes to increasing the attention paid to posters meant to help find missing children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The American spacefaring dream, which envisions average Americans being able to safely and routinely travel to and work in space, remains the American public's benchmark for measuring progress in America's human space enterprises. This article begins with a brief review of the ideas and developments that led up to the formation of the American spacefaring dream in the late 1950s. It continues with discussion of how building new logistics infrastructure capabilities has enabled America to lead the world in opening new physical and technological frontiers and why this provides a successful model for fulfilling the American spacefaring dream of opening the space frontier. The article concludes with the identification of specific planning objectives to guide the development, construction, and operation of an integrated American spacefaring logistics infrastructure. In Belarus, where the majority of the contamination from the Chemobyl nuclear reactor accident resides, the United Nations estimates that human life expectancy has declined about a dozen years for men and nearly a decade for women. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, in their statement, Global Climate Change: a plea for dialogue prudence and the common good, identify the "common good" as a crucial element in environmental policy debates. The physiological aspects of temperature regulation and heat illness, especially in the elderly who are least equipped to maintain a stable body temperature in the face of stress, are well understood. The ethical norm that--those least able to protect themselves, like the elderly, demand the most protection--is also well understood. In their common declaration of 2002, Pope John Paul II and the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I provide a message of both hope and urgency. Among other things, they invite "all men and women of good will to ponder the importance of a number of ethical goals." These goals include the "use of science and technology in a fall and constructive way, while recognizing that the findings of science have always to be evaluated in the light of the centrality of the human person," being "humble regarding the idea of ownership and... open to the demands of solidarity."

The article discusses the increased role of children's literature in elementary level history education. The authors comment on how incorporating children's literature can help teachers construct interdisciplinary units which engage different learning styles. OBJECTIVE: To examine early sedation patterns, as well as the association of dexmedetomidine exposure, with clinical and functional outcomes among mechanically ventilated patients with moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study with prospectively collected data. SETTING: Eighteen Level-1 Trauma Centers, United States. PATIENTS: Adult (age > 17) patients with msTBI (as defined by Glasgow Coma Scale < 13) who required mechanical ventilation from the Transforming Clinical Research and Knowledge in TBI (TRACK-TBI) study. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Using propensity-weighted models, we examined the association of early dexmedetomidine exposure (within the first 5 d of ICU admission) with the primary outcome of 6-month Glasgow Outcomes Scale Extended (GOS-E) and the following secondary outcomes: length of hospital stay, hospital mortality, 6-month Disability Rating Scale (DRS), and 6-month mortality. The study population included 352 subjects who required mechanical ventilation within 24 hours of admission. The initial sedative medication was propofol for 240 patients (68%), midazolam for 59 patients (17%), ketamine for 6 patients (2%), dexmedetomidine for 3 patients (1%), and 43 patients (12%) never received continuous sedation. Early dexmedetomidine was administered in 77 of the patients (22%), usually as a second-line agent. Compared with unexposed patients, early dexmedetomidine exposure was not associated with better 6-month GOS-E (weighted odds ratio [OR] = 1.48; 95% CI, 0.98-2.25). Early dexmedetomidine exposure was associated with lower DRS (weighted OR = -3.04; 95% CI, -5.88 to -0.21). In patients requiring ICP monitoring within the first 24 hours of admission, early dexmedetomidine exposure was associated with higher 6-month GOS-E score (OR 2.17; 95% CI, 1.24-3.80), lower DRS score (adjusted mean difference, -5.81; 95% CI, -9.38 to 2.25), and reduced length of hospital stay (hazard ratio = 1.50; 95% CI, 1.02-2.20). CONCLUSION: Variation exists in early sedation choice among mechanically ventilated patients with msTBI.
