Preserving national unity in light of diversity—e pluribus unum—is a challenge in immigrant-receiving nations like the United States We claim that endorsement of this view is structured by the varied bond between ethnic and national identity among immigrant minorities and native majorities, a proposition we test across three studies of US Latinos and whites. Study 1 uses national survey data to show that ethnic and national identity are associated with support for this objective, though in varied ways, among these groups. Studies 2 and 3 sharpen these results experimentally by illuminating the role of elite rhetoric in forging these connections. We show that elite remarks about the (in-)compatibility of ethnic and national identity motivate support for e pluribus unum through the specific attachment it influences. Sociologists exploring educational injustice often focus on socio-economic segregation as a central measure of injustice. The comprehensive ideal, furthermore, has the idea of socio-economic integration built into it. The current paper argues that socio-economic segregation is valuable only insofar as it serves other, more fundamental values. National identity, how one sees oneself as a member of a given nation, is an important form of social identity. Feelings toward one's country are a matter of both individual and collective concern. In an increasingly diverse world, the issue of identifying with a nation is complex and consequential for individual identity formation as well as collective political identity. How do young people think about what it means to be an American in the United States of America today? Using an in-depth interview approach, I investigate youth experiences in micro-contexts, the local contexts in which young people have concrete experiences that inform their developing identities, to illuminate important elements of the multiple pathways to American identity. Results point toward specific experiences that affect how young people form American identity: attachments to the ideals of America, the mismatch between American ideals and reality, experiences with diversity, opportunities for civic and political participation, and ideas about concepts such as the American dream. This article presents an analysis of the constructed social memories of the post-Civil War Confederate states in the U.S. The author highlights the trend of idealistic rationalization and selective memory regarding the nobility and bravery of the southern soldiers against the northern aggression. It is suggested that as a result certain aspects of warfare, such as guerrilla tactics, desertion, and other harsh conditions, were omitted from remembrance. This is contrasted with the accounts published in the memoirs of a Confederate soldier from North Carolina.

While many people in the United States and elsewhere reacted in horror, thousands were celebrating in the streets of occupied Palestine and no doubt elsewhere. For some the actions of the terrorists bore comparison with the Holocaust; in both cases, though incomparable in scope, innocent people were sent to their death by fanatics. But others reacted with something very much like enthusiasm; for them it was indeed like witnessing the French Revolution. Just as Kant saw no contradiction between moral condemnation of the revolutionaries' actions and affective sympathy for their ideals, so many found it important to distinguish between the terrorist acts, which they condemned unequivocally, and the presumed ideals of those who carried out the attacks, ideals with which they sympathized.
