The article discusses budgeted U.S. plans to build a high-speed rail systems across the country. It notes funding allocated with the 2009 economic stimulus law and the 2010 federal budget. Publicly-funded plans for high-speed rail in California also are noted. The article discusses questions about the nature of the system to be built and prospects for the use of so-called maglev technology wherein trains are magnetically levitated above a concrete guide. The article discusses aspects maglev train technology in Japan and consideration of the use of the technology to carry passengers between Los Angeles, California and Las Vegas, Nevada. Safety aspects of high-speed rail also are discussed.
