The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which in-service physical education teachers construct their self-efficacy beliefs toward teaching students with disabilities in general physical education classes. Using a qualitative descriptive approach situated within self-efficacy theory, data were collected via semistructured audio-recorded interviews with 16 in-service physical educators. Three interrelated themes were constructed: (a) The more I do it, the better I feel: the importance of professional experiences; (b) I've learned from others: the influence of colleagues; and (c) Being in the general educational setting is a challenge: the impact of contextual factors. Findings supported the influence of the four sources of self-efficacy (i.e., mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and affective and physiological state), in addition to potential contextual factors (i.e., class sizes and availability of hands-on support), impacting participants' self-efficacy to teach students with disabilities in general physical education classes. Exploring what practices early childhood special education (ECSE) teachers have been exposed to and use may highlight the need for improved dissemination and implementation supports. In this survey study, 312 U.S. ECSE teachers reported exposure (familiarity, training) and use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) and low-value practices (LVPs) for children with autism. Teachers reported high familiarity, training, and use of many EBPs (e.g., modeling, reinforcement), while other EBPs remain minimally used despite high familiarity (video modeling; 23.4%). Some teachers reported not using EBPs they had been trained in. Overall, teachers reported some familiarity and use of LVPs (m = 20.47, 0%–50.64%) and minimal training (preservice = 1.6%–33.33%). The purpose of this systematic literature review was to understand trends in field experiences that were part of early childhood special education (ECSE) teacher preparation activities in the United States. Thirteen studies that included an analysis of ECSE teacher candidates (TCs) completing at least one field experience, including coursework-based practicums or student teaching internships, were published between 2013 and 2022 and reviewed. Specifically, we examined the demographics of TCs and student participants to understand who was included in this research. Field experience parameters including setting, duration, instructional approach, and instructional focus were reviewed to draw comparisons between the various approaches to structuring TCs' early teaching opportunities. Finally, specific learning activities and feedback opportunities within field experiences, as well as TC and student outcomes of the studies, were explored to determine current trends and findings. The article focuses on the collaborative effort to update the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's (ACGME) Program Requirements for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency programs. Topics discussed include the evolution of PM&R residency training, input from key organizations and stakeholders, and specific recommendations for program revisions, particularly regarding procedural requirements and competency-based training approaches.

The United States faces troubling fertility trends that include high percentages of unintended pregnancies, as well as record-low fertility rates and individuals having fewer offspring than they desire. To address these problems, scholars and public health advocates have argued for the implementation of fertility information into existing sex-education curricula. In this study, we draw from 32 semi-structured interviews with secondary school sex educators to gain insight into their experiences on this front. They contended that one of the greatest barriers to their successfully teaching fertility related material was that students do not find fertility information relevant. Participants described three appeals that they employ to communicate fertility information as persistently relevant to the adolescents in their classes. Our interviews revealed that all three of these relevance appeals employ targeted invitations for students to tailor fertility information in ways that fit them personally. These findings suggest a need to re-conceptualize targeting and tailoring research in ways that connect with the goals of in situ, relevance-oriented communication, and they indicate how a focus on teaching health educators to establish fertility as relevant would help to situate future generations for better sexual and reproductive health over a lifetime. Background: Mentoring is crucial for professional development and retention of newly hired nurse faculty, yet little is known about the actual mentoring experiences of clinical nurses in their first few years following transition into academic teaching. Method: Individual semistructured interviews were conducted with 23 full-time nontenure-track faculty from 10 higher education institutions in seven states in the United States. All of the faculty were in the first 3 years of teaching in 4-year undergraduate nursing programs. Results: Five themes emerged: (1) chaotic work environments characterized by unpredictable workloads, absence of reliable support, and inconsistent access to information; (2) a de facto do-it-yourself system in which nurses pieced together their own support; (3) reliance on personal social networks; (4) yearning for real mentorship; and (5) future plans about staying in the role. Conclusion: A gap exists between widely touted recommendations about mentoring and the reality of mentoring for newly hired nontenure-track faculty. Professionals with lived experience (LE) of mental distress might better understand service users, educate colleagues, and serve as role models. This exploratory quantitative study asked U.S. social work education leaders if they perceive positives and negatives of professionals having LE; what advice they would offer students with LE; and analyzed whether certain experiences influenced responses. Having LE and/or close relationships with people with LE was associated with perceiving positives, which was associated with advising students about using LE to help others. Purpose: This study investigates how instructors in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) programs teach about cultural and linguistic diversity (CLD) in general-content courses as well as those dedicated to CLD content with the goal of identifying ways of improving training of preservice clinicians to provide culturally responsive service delivery. Method: A survey was sent to 4,192 instructors in CSD programs at 295 institutions in the United States and Puerto Rico, of which 565 responded. The survey contained choice response questions and open-ended questions. Results: Curricular infusion as the sole strategy of CLD training has decreased since a similar survey was published by Stockman et al. (2008), while the number of programs that offer courses dedicated to CLD or use both strategies has increased. Dedicated CLD courses offer broader training in CLD issues and are considered more effective at preparing students to work with CLD populations. A number of challenges were identified, such as a lack of available resources or time to cover CLD issues. Conclusions: A combination of curricular infusion and dedicated CLD coursework is recommended to ensure sufficient training in CLD issues. The development of additional resources is needed to better support instructors in both general-content and CLD-dedicated courses. Finally, CLD training should engage students in challenging unjust systems and harmful ideologies and not just celebrate multiculturalism in order to provide culturally responsive service to all clients. Health sciences librarians often lack knowledge of the motivations behind faculty publishing behavior. This study establishes some understanding of their choices through interviews with academic health sciences faculty members. Knowledge of the concepts of open access was lacking, as was the differences between open access and predatory publishing. Faculty had varied opinions on publication without robust peer review, its ethical implications, manuscript quality, and trust in scientific publishing. Evidence from this study suggests that librarians must take an active role in shaping the future of scholarly communication through education, advocacy, and a commitment to moving science forward equitably and ethically. This survey study examined 164 in-service special education teachers' perceptions of training strategies in their cross categorical teacher preparation program in the United Sates for developing knowledge and skills in systematic instruction, an evidence-based practice for students with extensive support needs. Both classroom-based and field-based training strategies were evaluated along with teachers' perceptions of the contribution and importance of the various training strategies. Results from Chi-square tests, Pearson correlations, multivariate analysis of covariance, and repeated measures of analysis of covariance indicated that teachers felt prepared to implement systematic instruction after exiting their program and after teaching students with disabilities, and the perceived effectiveness of training strategies was related to teacher experience. Teachers perceived modeling and receiving performance feedback in both university classrooms and field-based settings to contribute to their knowledge and skill development in systematic instruction. This study highlights effective components of restorative practice programming from the perspective of teachers involved in piloting a restorative practices initiative. Data were collected through 10 qualitative interviews at the study site - an under-resourced, urban school. Findings capture teacher perceptions of how two elements of the program design that are very often missing from restorative practice implementation made distinct contributions to an overall positive impact: (1) a full-time restorative practices coordinator; one that focuses exclusively on restorative practice implementation and does not also hold another role at the school; and (2) a student leadership program that trains and empowers students in restorative practices and relational climate building. Drawing on Relational-Cultural Theory, the discussion emphasizes that strengthening relational bonds has potential to enhance school climates for marginalized youth, which is critical to improving outcomes in under-resourced schools. In this article the authors report an interview between Dean Bragonier, Executive Dyslexic of NoticeAbility, USA and Angela Fawcett, international researcher into dyslexia, and explore the research literature on strengths and weaknesses in dyslexia. The interview was motivated by a series of conversations between the authors, and proposed by Fawcett in order to explore the underlying motivation and rationale for the work of the NoticeAbility group in designing and delivering entrepreneurial curricula for middle school children with dyslexia, in order to highlight their strengths in this area. Inspired by the highly successful keynote presentation by Bragonier at Unite SpLD, 2021, incorporating his research, the article attempts to provide a vehicle to escape any perceived ongoing constraints of dyslexia on academic self-expression from Bragonier, showcasing his motivation and the success of the approach he has been able to adopt in improving the motivation and self-esteem of dyslexic children, and the impact of these programmes on their parents and teachers. His approach is illustrated by the work of his son Bodhi in the recent Magellan Campaign visit to the UK, analysing the impact of positive role models in dyslexia. The current study used thematic analysis to examine school staff perspectives on the impact of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) on school climate in terms of the quality of student-student and student-teacher relationships in two low-income, urban middle schools in the United States. Data were collected using focus groups and interviews. Participants included teachers (n = 26), administrators (n = 8), and Bullying Prevention Coordination Committee members (BPCCs; n = 8). Results indicated that providing explicit instruction about bullying, nurturing student-teacher trust by effectively addressing student concerns, and providing consistent opportunities for informal, collaborative engagement facilitated positive school-based interpersonal relationships and behavioral change. The article focuses on the challenges of the nursing shortage in the U.S., particularly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to address the educational requirements of registered nurses (RNs) pursuing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees. It explores the potential of Hybrid Flexible (HyFlex) learning as an innovative approach to nursing education, aiming to provide flexibility for RNs while meeting diverse learning needs.

Background: This investigation evaluated the state of ultrasound imaging (USI) education in entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program curricula in the USA, including faculty perceptions and qualifications regarding USI and identification of potential barriers to inclusion or expansion of USI education. A review of published literature reveals that the inclusion of USI education in entry-level DPT program curricula has not been systematically investigated and is largely unknown. Methods: Investigators created an online survey developed in QualtricsXM and distributed through email an electronic link to the program chair/director at all 258 accredited entry-level DPT programs in the USA with instructions to complete and or share with faculty. Results: The overall response rate was 24% (65/269) and represented 54 programs from 28 of the 50 states; 70% reported including USI education in their program's curriculum, with 91% spending < 10 h on instruction throughout their curriculum; 44% reported plans to expand USI education in their curriculum, with 85% citing expanding scope of practice and curriculum as primary reasons; 79% cited the lack of qualified instructors, lack of knowledge/training, and equipment cost as the largest barriers to the inclusion of USI education in their program's curriculum. Whether USI is an entry-level skill was evenly split among respondents. Conclusions: Respondents from a representative sample of entry-level DPT programs across the USA provided survey responses. Despite most respondents being knowledgeable about USI, most do not use this point-of-care imaging modality in clinical practice. Based on the results of this survey, overcoming perceived barriers is necessary to expand USI education in entry-level DPT program curricula, namely, lack of qualified instructors, lack of knowledge/training, and cost of equipment. This national survey provides original data that may stimulate discussion about innovative ways to include USI education in entry-level DPT program curricula to meet the emerging needs of our profession. Teachers set the tone for their classrooms, but what teacher beliefs shape students' sense of belonging? We investigate how teachers' mindsets—or their beliefs about learning and school—relate to adolescents' individual and collective reports of classroom belonging. Our pre-registered analyses include a multilevel design of how 1,200 US middle school students (ages 11–13; 50% female; 49% low income; 40% White, 30% Latinx, 13% Black, 9% Asian) and their teachers responded to surveys on educational mindsets. We find teachers' growth mindset and confidence in teaching positively relate to students' math class belonging—explaining between 30 and 40% of belonging among classes. Our data suggest a teacher's own sense of school belonging is unrelated to the belonging students feel in class, suggesting teachers' broad feelings of belonging may not influence students' specific classroom feelings of belonging as anticipated. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right to access appropriate and comprehensive sexuality and relationship education (SRE), but face a long history of exclusion from SRE in the USA due to myths about the sexuality of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, biases against people with disabilities, and segregationist educational policies. Additionally, people with autism/autistic people are more likely to report having an LGBTQIA+ identity, and need comprehensive SRE content to become socially competent members of their communities. Teachers and other practitioners are often placed in the uncomfortable position of addressing many SRE topics while feeling unprepared, trying to stay aligned with educational policies, managing caregiver expectations, and providing scientifically accurate fact-based information in an increasingly politicised social climate. This paper provides recommendations on how to teach about LGBTQIA+ issues to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities including recommendations for modifying existing SRE curricula, identifying effective instructional strategies, and outlining a process for including LGBTQIA+ identities in SRE content. Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people face marginalization and exclusion within the mental health field. Barriers to services include providers' insensitivity, internalized cisgenderism, microassaults, and lack of skills and knowledge related to TGDaffirmative practices. As the mental health field has worked to address the historical pathologizing of TGDpeople, this study aimed to examine students' and faculty's self-reported TGD clinical competency and perceived TGD affirmative training in graduate programs. We sampled students (N = 155) and faculty (N = 69) from nationally accredited clinical training programs (i.e., American Psychological Association, Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education, and Council on SocialWork Education). Results indicated that faculty and students self-reported moderate levels of TGD clinical competency and TGD affirmative training in graduate programs. We discuss implications for training programs. Microaggressions are well-documented in education literature, yet they are typically explored on the interpersonal level and less often contextualized within a broader educational context. In this study, we used a critical qualitative approach, pairing a Critical Race Theory framework with a feminist critique, to explore K-12 faculty and staff perceptions of racial microaggressions in U.S. public schools. Twenty-five faculty and staff with anti-oppressive orientations shared their perceptions of pathologizing cultural values or communication styles, a specific type of microaggression. A flexible coding approach, including three coding cycles, was used to analyze the data. Participant narratives indicated how Black, Indigenous, and Latinx students, families, faculty, and staff are regularly pathologized in the K-12 education setting. Findings highlight how microaggressions are a form of institutionalized racism that negatively impacts the educational environment, thus norming and reenforcing the dehumanization of People of Color. The purpose of this study was to develop and explore the factor structure of university faculty-focused bystander attitude and behavior measures regarding gender-based violence and to expand on the inclusion of oppressive behaviors in these measures. An online survey was administered to a convenience sample of 167 faculty from a university in the US. Two scales, Faculty Bystander Attitude Scale (FBAS) and Faculty Bystander Behavior Scale (FBBS), were developed to assess faculty bystander attitudes and behaviors. After exploratory factor analysis, the 27-item FBBS successfully loaded on three factors and, after eliminating two items, the 25-item FBAS successfully loaded on three factors. A confirmatory factor analysis will be a useful next step in confirming the factor structure of the modified measures. Faculty specific bystander attitude and behavior scales are necessary to assess the efficacy of violence prevention programming for faculty. These scales can also be incorporated into campus climate surveys to determine faculty's willingness to intervene when they witness behaviors along the continuum of violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The U.S. Boards of Nursing (BONs) collect annual report data from their nursing programs as part of their approval process. This paper highlights the 2020 and 2021 annual report data on the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on all nursing programs in 17 BONs in 2020 and 19 in 2021. Method: Nursing programs answered 16 questions on the effect of COVID-19 on their programs. Because BONs require annual report data, all programs in the participating states answered the questions, which included 798 programs in 2020 and 929 in 2021. Results: Major disruptions in nursing education occurred during the pandemic. Clinical experiences and didactic classes were greatly affected, though alternative strategies were used. Student and faculty attrition rates were particularly high in 2021. Conclusion: The authors call for a national forum where nurse leaders analyze what happened and make recommendations for future crisis events. The use of holistic admissions in higher education has been demonstrated to increase the diversity of incoming student classes; yet, in occupational therapy (OT) research, admissions processes remain under-explored. This phenomenological study aimed to explore the process of OT admissions from the perspective of students, faculty, and staff at a single OT program with the goal to create a more inclusive, equitable, and holistic process. Focus groups were conducted with first-year students, and an online survey was sent to faculty to explore perspectives on the admissions process, necessary qualities for an OT graduate student, and suggestions for increasing inclusion and equity in the admissions process. Several key themes emerged: the cost of applying, lack of uniformity across different institutions' admissions requirements, and preconceived notions of institutions; flexibility in admissions requirements, connections with the institution, and the need to recruit more diverse participants. Findings of this study are consistent with the literature regarding the use of holistic processes in graduate education, recommending less focus on student academic achievements and increased view of the student as a multifaceted individual with numerous talents. Seventy-five general and 65 special education teachers working in the same 65 elementary schools in 12 different U.S. school districts were surveyed about their mindsets concerning the malleability of writing and intelligence as well as their practices for teaching writing. All teachers taught writing to one or more fourth-grade students receiving special education services, including students with learning disabilities. Both general and special education teachers typically held a growth mindset toward the malleability of writing and intelligence. Collectively, these teachers' mindsets predicted writing frequency (i.e., frequency of students' writing) and how often they taught writing skills and processes once variance due to teachers' preparation, efficacy to teach writing, teaching experience, and type of teacher was first controlled. The observed relationships between teachers' mindsets and reported practices for teaching writing were not mediated by type of teacher (i.e., general or special education). General and special education teachers did not differ in writing frequency for three types of writing collectively (narrative, informative, and persuasive) or how frequently they made 18 adaptations for teaching writing collectively, but general education teachers reported teaching writing skills and processes more often than their special education counterparts. Background: Across several sites in the United States, we examined whether kindergarten conduct problems among mostly population‐representative samples of children were associated with increased criminal and related (criminal + lost offender productivity + victim; described as criminal + victim hereafter) costs across adolescence and adulthood, as well as government and medical services costs in adulthood. Methods: Participants (N = 1,339) were from two multisite longitudinal studies: Fast Track (n = 754) and the Child Development Project (n = 585). Parents and teachers reported on kindergarten conduct problems, administrative and national database records yielded indexes of criminal offending, and participants self‐reported their government and medical service use. Outcomes were assigned costs, and significant associations were adjusted for inflation to determine USD 2020 costs. Results: A 1SD increase in kindergarten conduct problems was associated with a $21,934 increase in adolescent criminal + victim costs, a $63,998 increase in adult criminal + victim costs, a $12,753 increase in medical services costs, and a $146,279 increase in total costs. In the male sample, a 1SD increase in kindergarten conduct problems was associated with a $28,530 increase in adolescent criminal + victim costs, a $58,872 increase in adult criminal + victim costs, and a $144,140 increase in total costs. In the female sample, a 1SD increase in kindergarten conduct problems was associated with a $15,481 increase in adolescent criminal + victim costs, a $62,916 increase in adult criminal + victim costs, a $24,105 increase in medical services costs, and a $144,823 increase in total costs. Conclusions: This investigation provides evidence of the long‐term costs associated with early‐starting conduct problems, which is important information that can be used by policymakers to support research and programs investing in a strong start for children. Intervention dosage is foundational to realizing intended impacts but is often variable, particularly when interventions are implemented under real-world conditions. In this study, we examined dosage of small-group emergent literacy intervention experienced by preschool children (n = 154) identified as at risk for later reading difficulties in authentic classroom settings. We documented considerable variability in dosage that was largely due to when instructors stopped offering lessons. Drawing from extant literature and an ecological orientation, we found that instructor factors (i.e., instructor self-efficacy for teaching language and literacy, instructor perception of lesson acceptability, average small-group size) and classroom factors (i.e., classroom teachers' self-efficacy for decision-making), but not child factors, significantly predicted children's intervention dosage. Moreover, most variance could be attributed to differences between small groups/instructors rather than individual differences among children. We discuss implications for preschool teachers, administrators, researchers, and intervention developers seeking to better support successful small-group intervention implementation. In healthcare administration as well as a variety of health professions, interprofessional education (IPE) has become more widespread. Faculty in health professions programs work together to prepare students for collaborative practice in the workforce and the pursuit of the best outcomes for patients. With this, much of the focus of IPE is on clinical practices. The purpose of this article is to share the experience of three faculty members as they developed an under-graduate interprofessional health policy course. Many children with developmental delays need early intervention services but do not receive them. Developmental screening provides the impetus for identification of delays and service referrals but is not used consistently across all early childhood education settings. We used an implementation science framework to examine attitudes and engagement in a developmental screening program across three U.S. early childcare centers. Teachers demonstrated adequate knowledge of screening following training in the screener and were highly engaged in the screening process. Teachers' positive attitudes toward screening increased yet perceived barriers to regular use of screening in their practice remained unchanged. Family participation in the screening process varied across centers and suggested a trend between family income and participation. Future research is needed to target pervasive barriers to teachers' use of screening, such as perceived difficulties in engaging parents in the screening process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to ongoing and severe teacher shortages, preparing and sustaining a skilled special education teacher (SET) workforce is a top policy priority. Understanding predictors of SETs' intent to leave is crucial for policy makers and school leaders alike, as they seek to develop interventions to support retention efforts. In this study, we examined attrition intentions among SETs serving students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBDs), using longitudinal survey data from a U.S. nationally representative sample of teachers in the 2019–2020 school year (fall-winter-spring). We measured teachers' self-efficacy and burnout in fall, winter, and spring as well as teachers' intent to leave in spring. We found all three dimensions of fall burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment) had an indirect effect on spring intent to leave. All three dimensions of burnout in the spring predicted intent to leave, as did winter scores on depersonalization. Cross-time relationships between of dimensions of self-efficacy and burnout were revealed; however, at no timepoint was self-efficacy a significant predictor of intent to leave in spring, whether directly or indirectly. Purpose: Intergenerational differences in perceptions related to civility among nursing students and nurse educators were explored. Method: A convenience sample of 13 students and 10 educators were interviewed in this descriptive qualitative study. Results: Both groups defined civility as kindness, collaboration, and respect. Educators described civil students as being open to learning, polite, appreciative, and gracious. Students described civil educators as listening without judgment and being supportive and respectful. Educators described uncivil students as being disrespectful and entitled, and improperly using social media. Students described uncivil educators as belittling and impatient, and failing to listening. Conclusion: Respect was the strongest theme for both students and educators. In describing civil acts, students focused on cooperation to accomplish classroom and clinical tasks, whereas educators focused on productive classroom behaviors. More research on intergenerational differences is needed to help nurse educators develop interventions that allow faculty to view civility from a student perspective. There is growing recognition that integrating clients' religion and spirituality (RS) in mental health practice can contribute to positive outcomes. Given that intrinsic religiosity predicts faculty attitudes/behaviors regarding training students on such integration within social work education, it is worth understanding their RS beliefs and practices. Thus, our current national study describes the RS beliefs and practices of 807 MSW faculty in accredited programs. Interestingly, faculty consider RS to be important within their lives, are frequently involved in RS activities, and tend to be more religiously diverse than the general population. Background: Grief and loss are common experiences for children and adolescents, particularly during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Educators feel unprepared to support grieving students due to lack of training. We studied educator experiences receiving grief‐sensitive training as part of the grief‐sensitive schools initiative (GSSI), which provides grief‐sensitive training, online video‐based and print resources, and a financial grant to schools and school districts for use in supporting grieving students. Methods: Fourteen New York and Florida educators who received GSSI training participated in small focus groups or semi‐structured interviews on their experiences receiving GSSI training and supporting grieving students during the pandemic. Transcripts were analyzed using grounded‐theory analysis. Results: Emergent themes included increased confidence engaging grieving students, the desire for recurring trainings, the value of receiving training from an expert on pediatric grief and loss and the opportunity to ask questions, the need for grief‐sensitive training to reflect the cultural diversity of school communities, the unique losses experienced by students during the pandemic, and compassion fatigue and burnout in educators. Implications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity: Policymakers should recognize the effects of grief on students' learning and development and collaborate with educators to develop resources. Purpose: This study had two aims. Aim 1 was to query both communication science and disorders (CSD) faculty and school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding how written language is/was covered in their graduate programs. Aim 2 was to query school-based SLPs about their written language service provision. Method: CSD faculty (n = 143) and school-based SLPs (n = 610) completed an online survey examining (a) if and how written language was addressed in their graduate program, (b) what content related to written language was covered in graduate school, and (c) provision of written language services in schools (SLPs only). Results: There was a discrepancy in reports of training provision. Faculty reported providing more training than SLPs reported receiving. However, SLPs with fewer years of experience reported slightly higher levels of training compared to those with more years of experience. Additionally, there was variability among SLPs in how often they targeted written language in therapy. Finally, receipt of training in written language was a significant predictor of provision of written language services, as reported by SLPs. Conclusions: SLPs play a key role on literacy teams in schools, but many SLPs did not receive adequate training in written language. In order to ensure SLPs are trained to work with children with reading difficulties, graduate programs should ensure that written language is part of the clinical and academic curricula. Purpose: The early care and education (ECE) workforce plays a pivotal role in shaping early childhood developmental trajectories and simultaneously experiences significant mental health disparities. The purpose of this study is to investigate how social determinants of health and external stressors are associated with the mental health of ECE staff, which represent a low-resourced segment of the workforce; how psychological capital (psycap) can mitigate these associations. Design/methodology/approach: The authors administered an 89-item survey to 332 ECE staff employed in 42 Head Start centers in the USA. The authors ran three hierarchical linear regression models to analyze associations between social determinants of health, external sources of stress, psycap and potential moderation effects and mental health outcomes. Findings: Individuals experiencing greater finance-related stress reported 0.15 higher scores on the depression scale and 0.20 higher scores on the anxiety scale than those experiencing less finance-related stress (p < 0.05). Individuals experiencing greater work-related stress reported 1.26 more days of poorer mental health in the past month than those experiencing less work-related stress (p < 0.01). After controlling for all sociodemographic variables and sources of stress, psycap was significantly and negatively associated with depressive symptomology (b-weight = −0.02, p < 0.01) and the number of poor mental health days reported in the past month (b-weight = −0.13, p < 0.05). Moderation models suggest that higher levels of psycap may mitigate the association between work-related stress and the number of poor mental health days reported in the past month (b-weight = −0.06, p = 0.02). Originality/value: The implications of these findings suggest a need for policy change to mitigate social determinants of health and promote pay equity and multi-level interventio ns that target workplace-related stressors and psycap to combat poor mental health of the ECE workforce. This study seeks to extend wicked problems analysis within the context of a library's support for virtual reality (VR) and the related extended reality (XR) emerging technologies. The researchers conducted 11 interviews with 13 librarians, embedded IT staff, and/or faculty members who were involved in administering, managing, or planning a virtual reality lab or classroom in a library (or similar unit) in a higher education setting. The qualitative analysis of the interviews identified clusters of challenges, which are categorized as either emergent (but solvable) such as portability and training; complicated (but possible) such as licensing and ethics: and/or wicked (but tameable). The respondents framed their role in supporting the wickedness of VR/XR in three basic ways: library as gateway, library as learning partner, and library as maker. Five taming strategies were suggested from this research to help librarians wrestle with these challenges of advocating for a vision of VR/XR on their respective campuses. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the views and influence of left-handedness among obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) trainees and educators and to identify perceived obstacles in training by left-handed (LH) trainees. Study Design An online survey was sent to the U.S. Obstetrics and Gynecology training programs. All participants were asked questions on hand preference for various medical and nonmedical activities, as well as on demographics. Participant responses to handedness and their role as a learner or educator directed them toward further questions. Trainees were surveyed on their experience and outlook as a LH physician in OBGYN. Educators were surveyed on their experience and attitudes in working with LH trainees. LH educators were also surveyed on their experience as a LH physician, similar to the LH trainees. Chi-square or Fisher's exact analysis was used as appropriate, with p -value <0.05 considered statistically significant. Results Responses were received from 21 training programs, totaling 304 individuals. Participants included 205 learners (156 right handed and 49 left handed), and 99 faculty (82 right handed and 17 left handed). A lack of LH surgical instrument availability (93.6%) and difficulty using right-handed (RH) instruments (83%) were notable obstacles reported by LH learners. The majority of LH learners (57.4%) did not consider their handedness to be disadvantageous but did note added difficulty when training under RH mentors when compared with training under LH mentors (66%). In contrast to LH educators, RH educators endorsed added difficulty in instructing operative procedures to LH learners (32.1 vs. 13.3%, p = 0.012). Conclusion LH trainees face unique challenges during their OBGYN training. Educators would benefit from guidance on how best to manage these trainees. Educators should work to adapt surgical and procedural techniques to accommodate LH trainees. Key Points LH learners reported more difficulty in training under RH mentors. The COVID-19 pandemic was unprecedented in scope and nature, altering everyday life for people across the United States. One major change involved how schools provided educational services. Prior to the pandemic, schools used in-person instruction as their service delivery model for educational and education-related services, such as services for the blind and visually impaired. To document the effects of this historic event, an exploratory survey through Qualtrics was conducted on the perceptions of (a) teachers of students with visual impairments and (b) orientation and mobility specialists in four categories: service delivery models, student demographics, instruction and engagement, and preparation and training. Percentages were calculated with closed questions, and open-ended responses were used to clarify the data. There were some significant post-hoc correlations between ability to provide educational services and instructional delivery models. BACKGROUND: teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) is an Australian school‐based universal program for grade 10 to 12 students. tMHFA teaches teens how to recognize and respond to a peer in crisis or experiencing mental health concerns. METHODS: Schools implementing tMHFA in 2019 and 2020 were propensity score matched, yielding a sample of instructors (n = 130) and students (n = 1915) in 44 high schools in 24 American states. Effectiveness and acceptability were assessed with student surveys at baseline and after implementation. RESULTS: There were significant findings for primary outcomes, including improved helpful first aid intentions (Cohen ds = 0.57 to 0.58), confidence supporting a peer (ds = 0.19 to 0.31); the number of adults rated as helpful (ds = 0.37 to 0.44); and reductions in stigmatizing beliefs (ds = 0.21 to 0.40) and "harmful first aid intentions" (ds = 0.11 to 0.42). Instructors and students rated the program favorably with students sharing improvements on their recognition and responses to mental health problems and crises. CONCLUSION: tMHFA is an effective, feasible, and scalable training program for increasing mental health literacy and decreasing mental health stigma in adolescents in the short term, consistent with trials of tMHFA in Australian adolescents. This paper presents findings from an investigation of nature-based practices, from the perspectives of 10 academics/educators from six nations. Participants engaged in a focus group exploring the prevalence and inclusion of nature in social work practice and education. While the study focused on individual members' experiences and perspectives, the findings highlight important context-specific factors for including nature within social work to reconnect humans with nature for health, well-being, healing, and justice. Phenomenon: Faculty career success in academic medicine is complex. Dynamic interactions among faculty and between faculty and their socio-cultural working environments contribute to the mystique of academic advancement. There are few empirical studies that analyze the social practice of faculty career advancement in academic medicine, especially those that focus on relations between individual and environmental contexts. This study aimed to investigate various faculty members' experiences around career advancement in a medical school. Through the analytical lens of Bourdieu's theory of practice, we focused on the relationship among individuals, positions, and environmental contexts. Approach: Following a general process of interpretive grounded theory, we collected faculty members' perceptions and experiences related to their career development and advancement via in-depth semi structured-interviews of 23 faculty at a medical school in the United States. We analyzed the interview transcripts using thematic and constant-comparison analyses, informed by Bourdieu's theory of practice emphasizing the concepts of habitus, field, doxa, illusio, and capital. Findings: While there was a general perception of collaborative success in the school, access to resources seemed to be unequally distributed and linked to faculty positions. Career opportunities, such as leadership and promotion, were mostly granted by leaders based on interpersonal relationships (social capital). Clinical faculty's limited access to professional development activities (cultural capital), including research, limited their likelihood for promotion (symbolic capital) at the school. An institutional emphasis on clinical productivity reinforced clinical faculty's constraints on academic scholarship, which led to perceived inequities by clinical faculty. Participants also perceived subtle gender bias and an unequal distribution of power among the specialties, which contradicted a culture of collaboration and support in the school. Insights: Complex power structures influence faculty career success. Unequal access and differential power among faculty positions resulted in disparities in career advancement. Greater transparency, equity, and inclusivity are obvious suggestions for change to allow all faculty to benefit from essential resources and career building opportunities. Furthermore, building high-quality relationships between leaders and faculty and mutual respect between specialties are essential to sustaining an organizational culture conducive to career success for all faculty. Faculty will benefit from a greater awareness of the structural and normative aspects of a medical school that are less obvious and more difficult to change. Objective: Barriers to palliative care for children with serious illness include system constraints and vastly different training and attitudes toward palliative care. This study aimed to explore trainee and faculty physician perceptions of barriers to palliative care across two pediatric centers to (1) examine differences between trainees and faculty and (2) compare these data with previous studies. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted in fall 2021 among pediatric trainees and faculty physicians at three pediatric hospitals in two pediatric centers in the western United States. Surveys were distributed through hospital listservs and analyzed descriptively and through inductive thematic analysis. Results: There were a total of 268 participants: 50 trainees and 218 faculty physicians. Of the trainees, 46% (23) were fellows and 54% (27) were pediatric residents. Trainees and faculty reported the same four most common barriers, which were consistent with previous studies: family not ready to acknowledge an incurable condition (64% trainees and 45% faculty); family preference for more life-sustaining therapies than staff (52% and 39%); uncertain prognosis (48% and 38%); and parent discomfort with possibility of hastening death (44% and 30%). Other barriers commonly reported included time constraints, staff shortages, and conflict among family about treatment goals. Language barriers and cultural differences were also cited. Conclusions: This study examining palliative care across two pediatric centers suggests that providers' perceptions of family preferences and understanding of illness persist as barriers to the delivery of pediatric palliative care services. Future research should examine family-centered and culturally mindful interventions to better elucidate family perspectives on their child's illness to align care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After decades of work, a unified conceptualization of pedagogical reflection remains elusive. Seeking clarity on the identity of pedagogical reflection, this phenomenological study begins not with an a priori definition of reflection, but with the lived experiences of five veteran teachers. Its goal was to discern from the respondents' narratives the essence of pedagogical reflection, what makes the experience of pedagogical reflection what it is. Analysis of respondents' narratives show that their experiences of pedagogical reflection align with qualities of the classical virtue phronesis: an essentially moral, habitual way of being, concerned with practical situations, that weaves together thinking, feeling, wanting, deciding, and acting into a unified whole. This inclusive understanding of reflection organizes and harmonizes the varied work on reflection from Dewey to the present and provides direction for teacher educators in their work to help teacher candidates become reflective practitioners. Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a commonly occurring, yet historically poorly understood, mental health concern among post-secondary students. The present study sought to identify the current knowledge needs of university stakeholders to inform training efforts around effective NSSI response and student support on university campuses. Participants were 1,762 university students, staff, and student-staff (77% female) from seven universities in Canada, the USA, New Zealand, and Australia. Participants completed an online survey about their attitudes and knowledge of both general mental health and NSSI. University stakeholders reported significantly greater stigma toward NSSI than mental illness in general. Student-staff reported greater perceived knowledge and comfort, and demonstrated greater knowledge of NSSI, than students and staff. Findings underscore the need for additional training and resources to reduce stigma and increase knowledge about NSSI on university campuses internationally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Mental illness is a growing public concern, particularly for persons in higher education. This research aims to distinguish mental health and stigma experiences between three academic communities: undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members. Methods: The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with nineteen individuals who self-identified as a member of one or more of these groups. Findings and discussion: Participants reported experiencing a variety of mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress), and described having diverse cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses to internally and externally derived stigma. The findings of this study also provide insights into the ways that academic communities observe and interpret on-campus communication about mental health, and participants offered impressions about ways to improve intervention and awareness messaging. Divisive social rhetoric and prevalent racism make the need for infusing social justice throughout counselor education even more urgent than the decades-long calls for it. There is a dearth of empirical inquiry into the ways social justice concepts are enacted across rehabilitation counseling curricula. The current study used an exploratory survey to collect information about the techniques used by U.S. rehabilitation counselor educators (N = 71) to infuse social justice across all of their courses, including their pedagogical choices, rates of frequency for updating coursework, and professional development choices. Findings reveal that educators have favorable attitudes about social justice, are more likely to use academic journals and related disciplines in course development, and are more likely to use self-reflection and intuition-based opportunities for social justice professional development. Implications of the findings also include relevancy for supervisors and practitioners, who have the responsibility to and lead social justice education once trainees have entered the field as professionals. An innovative, online, 13-week course using a flipped classroom model was developed for junior faculty anesthesiologists at teaching hospitals in East Africa and piloted in Ethiopia and Tanzania. Methods: Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed to evaluate potential change in participants' knowledge, skills, and attitudes as well as the feasibility of e-learning in the region. Results: Analysis of data revealed that top areas of change in participants' knowledge were in the flipped classroom approach (increased by 79%), effective mentoring practices (67%), and elements of effective course goals and objectives (58%). Leading areas of change in skills were in developing goals and objectives (72%), using case-based learning (67%), and engaging learners through PowerPoint (64%). Change in attitudes was largest in the areas of effective mentoring and strong leadership (27%), using course and lecture learning objectives (26%), and student-centered learning theory (26%). Qualitative data revealed that participants were satisfied with the course; found the structure, presentations, and delivery methods to be effective; and appreciated the flexibility of being online but experienced challenges, particularly in connectivity. Discussion: This evaluation demonstrated the efficacy of using e-learning in East Africa and highlights the innovation of online faculty development in a region where it has not been done before. By using participants as future instructors, this course is scalable in the region and worldwide, and it can help address limited access to training by providing a critical mass of trainers competent in teaching, mentoring, and leading. Positive interpersonal relationships between college administration and faculty are necessary as they contribute to organizational climate measures, such as a sense of belonging and perceived organizational worth. Furthermore, such relationships may combat against faculty cynicism. Interpersonal experiences are particularly relevant in a post-coronavirus disease 2019 workplace in which interactions with colleagues are infrequent. Little is known about the effects of interpersonal experiences on part-time faculty specifically, as compared with full-time faculty. This study investigates teamwork experiences and interpersonal constraints as predictors of the attitudes and perceptions of full- and part-time faculty at a four-year public teaching college in the southwestern United States. After controlling for years working at the college, teamwork was a consistent predictor of higher sense of belonging, perceived organizational worth, and lower cynicism among full- and part-time faculty. Furthermore, the presence of negative coworker relationships was a significant predictor of lower sense of belonging and perceived organizational worth among full-time faculty. Inadequate help or lack of contact with co-workers was not a significant predictor of faculty attitudes and perceptions. The results of this study suggest the need for fostering teamwork and positive relationships among full- and part-time faculty in a meaningful and systemic manner within institutions of higher education. Additionally, this study provides support for institutionalizing a team-based approach to working among all faculty to foster perceived belonging and worth, while limiting cynicism. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey communication sciences and disorders (CSD) faculty in the United States to determine their perspectives and knowledge about freedom of speech on college campuses. Method: An online, anonymous survey was presented to interested CSD faculty, recruited from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Higher Education Special Interest Group 10, who answered Likert-style questions regarding demographics, perceptions, and university experiences pertaining to free speech. Results: The 91 respondents represented mostly White female faculty and administrators from across the United States. The vast majority valued free speech, felt their free speech was supported at their university, considered that free speech must be balanced with respect for others, and valued ideological diversity. Respondents reported differing opinions regarding how supported they felt about their freedom of speech in all cases. More hostility was reported for conservative over liberal beliefs. Conclusions: This study's findings suggest that although perceptions regarding free speech vary for faculty and administrators, most respondents felt their free speech was supported by their university. However, as some individuals do not feel supported, consideration of ways to welcome open discussions with differing opinions within academic programs is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The U.S. News & World Report college ranking system is used to describe the best graduate programs in the country. Rankings of graduate programs are based solely on perceived ratings of quality by directors and/or deans. Athletic training is not listed by U.S. News & World Report; however, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) reports key metrics such as the Board of Certification pass rate and program graduation rate, which could be helpful to create rankings. To evaluate and rank CAATE-accredited professional athletic training (PAT) programs using 2 models: (1) perceived rating of academic quality by program directors (PDs) and (2) CAATE outcome data. Cross-sectional with survey and retrospective data. Web-based survey. One hundred fifty-five PDs and 230 CAATE-accredited PAT programs. The perceived rating survey for the PDs resembled the U.S. News & World Report system using a 5-point Likert scale to assess the academic quality of each program. For the CAATE outcome data, we used publicly available information for each PAT program on the CAATE website. We ranked all PAT programs using the data from each model. A Cohen κ was performed to explore the agreement between the PDs' perceived ranking and the CAATE outcome data rankings. No agreement was found between the perceived peer assessment and CAATE outcome data rankings (κ = −0.003, P =.401). Perception by PDs did not align with objective data reported by CAATE. The lack of agreement between the 2 ranking systems highlights concerns about using the U.S. News & World Report system for graduate health programs. We suggest exploring a more robust and comprehensive formula including overall pass rate and graduation rate to identify top-ranked programs in athletic training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Home–school partnerships between teachers and caregivers of students with or at risk of emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD) are critical to support positive student outcomes. Yet, effective home–school partnerships may be particularly challenging to foster for students with or at risk of EBD, and little is known about how teachers and caregivers view these partnerships. We used a directed content analysis qualitative approach to examine the presence or absence of components of a conceptual model, the CARES framework, within home–school partnerships from the perspectives of both teachers and caregivers of students with or at risk of EBD. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six U.S. teachers and 11 U.S. caregivers who had participated in a study examining the promise of a Tier 2 intervention. Findings highlight themes unique to specific components of the CARES framework and themes common across components, with authentic relationships and effective communication emerging as particularly salient for both caregivers and teachers. Results suggest critical directions for future research and essential lessons for researchers developing interventions to support positive home–school partnerships for caregivers and teachers of students with or at risk of EBD.
