This article reports on the launch of Canada's iNet gateway and electronic information management network in the U.S. in September 1987. Aiming for a slice of the U.S. online business market, the network took up residence in the U.S. as a joint venture project of Ameritech, Bell Canada Enterprises, and Telenet Communications Corp. The venture provides gateways to Dialog, BRS, NewsNet, and Official Airline Guides and offers specialized iNet features such as electronic messaging, data conferencing, bulletin boards, and a database directory.

This article provides information on the three new files on Dialog that supply comprehensive online coverage of companies in Great Britain and the U.S. as of April 1984. The ICC British Company Directory, which went up as file 561 in March, profiles 900,000 companies that are listed with the British Companies Registry. Each listing gives the name and address of the company plus dates of incorporation and the most recent date the company filed its accounts and returns. A companion file, ICC British Company Financial Datasheets, gives detailed filings data on over 60,000 British companies. Records include information on the holding company, directors, description of the business, full financial information and precomputed ratios of company performance.

The article informs that Dialog Information Services Inc. has changed its name to Knight-Ridder Information Inc. The change took effect the first of this month. At the same time the company began using a new mailing address and telephone numbers, in preparation for moving its headquarters to Mountain View, California. The name of the company's best known product, the DIALOG online service, will remain. However, the changing technological environment, an increasing market outside the U.S., and an expanding product line prompted Dialog to seek a company name that could more easily unite its global entities.

This article states that the American Medical Association and Information Access Company (IAC) have announced that the full text of The Journal of the American Medical Association and American Medical News is now available online through Health Periodicals Database, the online database published by IAC. Currently, Health Periodicals Database may be accessed through Dialog Information Services, Inc. and Data-Star. Unlike traditional online health databases, Health Periodicals Database provides broad coverage in the areas of health, medicine, fitness, and nutrition. It is the only database to offer lay researchers consumer-oriented summaries of selected articles from more than 100 professional medical journals. In addition, author abstracts are available from some of these publications. The American Medical Association is the largest medical organization in the United States with a membership in excess of 285, 000 physician.

This article reports that Gale Directory of Publications database will be combined with Directories in Print and Newsletters in Print to form a publishing resource as of July 1991. Beginning early in 1992, Dialog subscribers will have complete access to details on virtually every newspaper, magazine, newsletter, and directory published in the U.S. The agreement to place Gale's publications and publishers databases online with Dialog continues the successful relationship that began in 1979 when Dialog placed Gale's Encyclopedia of Associations online.

CanCorp provides directory, financial and textual information on over 6,000 public and private Canadian companies. Updated weekly, CanCorp offers a complete corporate information package on major Canadian public companies trading on Canadian and U.S. exchanges, privately-held federally register companies, federal and provincial crown corporations, companies in the current Report on Business 1000 list and all companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

This defense and aerospace database contains the complete text of all the articles and U.S. Department of Defense contract and award announcements from the six weekly newsletters of DMS Inc. This article provides information on the adventures of freelance writer/personal computer-marketing consultant Steven Roberts, who freelanced electronically as he crossed the U.S. on a 200-pound recumbent bicycle equipped with solar panels and who plans a second, even higher-tech trek. Roberts used a Hewlett Packard Portable Plus computer and a modem to write and send his stories, Dialog to do research and CompuServe to communicate with his friends. Roberts' book about his 9,760- mile 18-month trip, Computing Across America, is slated for publication in 1986 by Learned Information Inc.

This article announces that Compare Products, a new database from Data Courier, has been scheduled for an August 1985 debut on Dialog as File 539. The information in Compare Products is drawn from all the display advertisements appearing in more than 100 leading U.S. computer and business publications. Records contain the company name, address, and telephone number, product name, classification codes, and a 15 to 20 word description of each product. The database's initial load will detail approximately 10,000 companies and products. A free four-page reference sheet for searching Compare Products on Dialog is available by calling Data Courier's Client Services Department. Compare Product is the first of two databases to be introduced by Data Courier covering the computer industry. Ads is expected to become available on Dialog later this year.

The article reports on the enlistment of Dialog as File 284 of IRS Taxinfo in February 1985. The database provides the complete text of the most frequently requested Internal Revenue Service (IRS) publications concerned with individual tax returns in the U.S. The file contains 1984 tax year versions of 71 publications and each record lists the title of the IRS tax publication and the section headings, the IRS publication number, the year for which the information is to be used and the revision date.

An update policy for electronic edition of the "Academic American Encyclopedia" was initiated by Grolier Electronic Publishing. Market Data Retrieval's Electronic Directory of Education is due for Dialog launching in March.

This article focuses on the electronic publication of the 1980 census in the U.S. Vital demographic information from the 1980 U.S. Census will find a home on Dialog in August 1984 in a new database, Donnelley Demographics produced by Donnelley Marketing Information Services. Demographic data will be included on each U.S. state, county, metropolitan statistical area, city or town, and zip code, plus a U.S. summary. Breakdowns will include total and household populations, total households, average household size, median household income; age, race, and sex; industry, occupation and employment data; marital status, households and families; and market research data such as education, housing and mobility.
