The article discusses the more commonly used herbal medicines, their side-effects and their effects on the conduct of anaesthesia. Cited herbal medicines include echinacea, ephedra, garlic, ginger, gingko biloba, ginseng, herbal diuretics, kava, St. John's Wort, and valerian. Due to the constant evolution of the use of herbal medicines and their development, the authors suggest having sources of information for the anaesthetists which include the National Centre for Complementary and Alternative in the U.S. and Toxbase in Great Britain.
