A plethora of work has identified forms and sources of gender inequality in sport coaching. Quantitative studies with psychological framings dominate the literature. However, a smaller and more recent body of qualitative work has identified structural gender hierarchies as the root of inequalities, specifically the prevalence of hegemonic masculinity. Fewer studies have contextualised understandings of women's experiences of this, particularly at grassroots levels and there is little acknowledgement of a notable shift in the visibility of women's power and presence in society including sport. Thus, in this study [Gill, R. (2007). "Gender and the media." Polity Press] "postfeminist sensibility" was used to examine seven female coaches' experiences of various grassroots sports settings, specifically what might be novel in women's contemporary coaching experiences, but also to acknowledge any persistent structural inequalities. Findings suggest that while female coaches are continually facing challenges borne out of dominant forms of masculinity which remain deeply rooted in sport cultures, they are actively contesting and navigating these by drawing upon performed masculinities. Consequently, new femininities have emerged, but these are fragile, often misinterpreted and can lead to women struggling to progress their coaching careers. Future work in this field should look to develop the use of postfeminist lenses in similar ways, to further identify new(er) femininities which have the potential to grow and develop women's representation in coaching.

This study considers academic identity and the performance of identity work in the context of the design and delivery of new degree apprenticeships. Recent UK Policies have driven many changes in UK higher education, including the rapid development of new awards combining an apprenticeship with a full bachelor's or master's degree. Delivery requires university partnerships with industry, supported by significant government funding--and targets. Semi-structured in-depth interviews identified the pressures on 30 participants to retain academic identity in managing relationships with a range of different partners as shown in a generative model of academic identity work. Results show the ambiguities and uncertainties embedded in supporting academic identity, with stress caused by managerial approaches and difficulties in maintaining the identity of 'a proper academic' with implications for university management.

Purpose: This paper aims to use (in)visibility as a lens to understand the lived experience of six women managers in the headquarters of a large multinational organization in the UK to identify how "gender" is expressed in the context of organizational learning. Design/methodology/approach: The researchers take a phenomenological approach via qualitative data collection with a purposeful sample--the six female managers in a group of 24. Data were collected through quarterly semi-structured interviews over 12 months with the themes--knowledge, interaction and gender. Findings: Organizations seek to build advantage to gain and retain competitive leadership. Their resilience in a changing task environment depends on their ability to recognize, gain and use knowledge likely to deliver these capabilities. Here, gender was a barrier to effective organizational learning with women's knowledge and experience often unseen and unheard. Research limitations/implications: This is a piece of research limited to exploration of gender as other, but ethnicity, age, social class, disability and sexual preference, alone or in combination, may be equally subject to invisibility in knowledge terms; further research would be needed to test this however. Practical implications: Practical applications relate to the need for organizations to examine and address their operations for exclusion based on perceived "otherness". Gendered organizations cause problems for their female members, but they also exclude the experience and knowledge of key individuals as seen here, where gender impacted on effective knowledge sharing and cocreation of knowledge. Social implications: The study offers further evidence of gendered organizations and their impacts on organizational effectiveness, but it also offers insights into the continues social acceptance of a masculinized normative model for socio-economic practice. Originality/value: This exploration of gender and organizational learning offers new insights to help explain the way in which organizational learning occurs--or fails to occur--with visibility/invisibility of one group shaped by gendered attitudes and processes. It shows that organizational learning is not gender neutral (as it appears in mainstream organizational learning research) and calls for researchers to include this as a factor in future research.

The experiences of five female lecturers working in higher education in the UK are explored as they engage in the search for a feminised critical space as a refuge from the masculinised culture of performativity in which they feel constrained and devalued. Email exchanges were used as a form of narrative enquiry that provided opportunity and space to negotiate identities and make meaning from experiences. The exchanges provided a critical space, characterised by trust, honesty and care for the self and for each other, that enabled a sharing of authentic voices and a reaffirming of identities that were made vulnerable through the exposing of the self as an emotional, politicised subject. Drawing on existing theoretical understandings of critical feminised spaces enabled us to create a pedagogical framework for work with students in further developing caring and co-caring communities of practice that are not alternative to, but are outside the performativity landscape of education.

This article reports on research into the experience of professional doctoral students and is written by the students themselves. We, the authors, are currently studying for the Doctorate in Education at the University of Manchester, UK. We place our work in the context of recent empirical research into the development of doctoral student identity, noting that these literatures are usually authored by programme directors and supervisors. Using a theoretical approach based on the work of Etienne Wenger, we examine how the aims and curriculum of our programme interplay with our professional learning. In interviews with our cohort of students, we explore the complexity and non-linearity of learning. We do not find a simple progression from practitioner to researcher; rather, we find a fluid and complex relationship between those two identities. We consider the extent to which Wenger's modes of identification are a useful conceptual tool for understanding this interplay and for theorising about our findings. We conclude that there is further scope for the development of our theoretical framework by drawing on other scholarly work on identity development and reflexivity.

Abstract: Diseases of the thyroid are common in the developed and developing world. We retrospectively compared surgical pathologies, types of thyroidectomy, and postoperative complications between 2 case series, one from the Mercy Ships in West Africa with 87 patients, and the other from London in the United Kingdom with 120 patients. In both, the most common operation was hemithyroidectomy, and nodular hyperplasia was the most common disease. The postoperative complication rate of sero-haematoma was comparable with large international series. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Urban policy transfer between the US and UK has long been of interest to researchers and practitioners. Given the recent wider context of reduced direct funding and the absence of a coherent regeneration policy, this paper considers the introduction of Tax Increment Financing (TIF) to the UK as a method of stimulating spatially targeted economic development initiatives. The paper explores whether TIF could be considered a form of policy transfer, and in doing so uncovers whether the transfer of TIF could – (a) be successful and unsuccessful under certain circumstances; (b) require the actions of certain stakeholders; and (c) be enabled via prescribed frameworks and negotiation. The results are evidenced using qualitative approaches and find that TIF is more of a modified policy ‘idea’ rather than transfer. Further discussion argues that TIF can be successful, if it considers flexible but local elements and has the capacity to balance stakeholders for development brokerage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

One of the most important questions confronting the family justice system over recent years is the extent to which the family courts should be opened up to the outside world - an issue of 'transparency'. This article commences by discussing the confusion in the existing law restricting publication of material relating to family proceedings. It proceeds to trace the history of the controversial measures introduced by Part 2 of the Children, Schools and Families Act 2010. This article reviews the first seven years of the operation of the Human Rights Act 1998 (UK) and compares it with the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic), which comes fully into force on 1 January 2008. It considers in particular the court's duty to interpret legislation compatibly with humen rights; the effect of the new measures on judicial review, especially in the field of personal liberty; and the position of non-governmental public authorities. The article focuses on the beneficial effects of veterinary medicine in Great Britain. The veterinary profession provides diagnostic techniques and medical and surgical approaches necessary to deliver health care to animals. The relation between human and veterinary medicine is particularly strong in the field of infectious disease wherein clinical studies have been done to study treatment methods. Better diagnostic and treatment methods bring considerable benefits in relieving animal suffering.

The article discusses problems of creativity and control related to television. Television in Great Britain seems to have developed a resistance towards sustained social enquiry from outside, while producing few professionals to attempt to diagnose the medium from within. The standpoint of this paper, written from experience both as a producer and as an executive, is exploratory. It aims to identify and describe some of the main forces which influence decisions in television. The British Broadcasting Corp. and television station Independent Television are sometimes discussed together because, although there are differences between these two systems, similarities in organization and creative impulses are close enough to allow a general discussion of creativity and control in television. The conflict between creativity and control can only be reconciled in television as in so many other forms of human activity, by going back to the idea of responsibility itself. The better way is to look on responsibility in the broadcasting organization as multiple that is a number of people exercising different functions, each with a wide and overlapping responsibility.

The article discusses the role of the Attorney General in British politics. The author claims that the Attorney General's role must be stated more clearly in the country's constitution, since the current law creates a conflict of interest. This is because the Attorney General is supposed to be both an independent legal adviser as well as a partisan voter.

Debate has been shown to develop critical thinking skills, enhance communication, and encourage teamwork in a range of different disciplines, including nursing. The objective of this study was to explore students' perceptions of the educational value of debate. A semi-structured focus group was conducted with 13 undergraduate Operating Department Practice students following a debate on the opt-out system of organ donation. Transcripts were analysed thematically, identifying three main themes that described the students' perceptions of the debate. These were: (1) openness to diverse viewpoints; (2) developing non-technical skills, and (3) encouraging deep learning. The analysis showed participants perceived debate to be a valuable educational method that enhanced their learning. Engaging in debate encouraged students to critically reflect on their prior beliefs about organ donation—in some cases leading them to reconsider their original position. The findings from this study suggest that debate can be a valuable pedagogical tool to incorporate into healthcare education. Although graduate employability is an increasingly important issue, job interview formats and techniques specific to sport students' prospective careers are not explicitly taught, practiced or assessed. Yet, successful interviews are pivotal in transitioning from education to employment. We report on a teaching intervention with final year sport students who undertook mock job interviews as an assessment. Evaluative data suggests students initially felt underprepared for job interviews. The assessment allowed students to adapt and practice their skills in this context and receive feedforward-focused feedback. The article provides some evolutionary proposals to change the House of Lords, Great Britain's upper house of the Parliament, from a largely appointed body to a largely elected body. As stated, the proposals are intended to keep codified relationships between the upper house and the country's lower house of Parliament, that is, House of Commons. It further states that the proposed reform of the upper house will make both the houses of parliament stronger and more effective.
