This article reports that researchers in Great Britain are developing a pan/tilt head for a camera intended to equal human ability to "see" and respond to objects. BAE Systems is interested in using the technology in an autonomous robotic platform. Project leader Kevin Gurney, from the University of Sheffield, said the aim is to stretch the capability of the available components. Ocular motor control is extremely hard. The system should be capable of such high performance because it processes visual information in the same way as the human brain, being able to ignore activities peripheral to the current task, but still capable of switching its attention immediately to a threat or other relevant stimulus.
