Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most commonly diagnosed compression neuropathy of the upper limb. Patients may present to general practitioners, physiotherapists, hand therapists, or surgeons with a variety of symptoms. Several studies have examined the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. We review these resources to provide an evidence based guide to the diagnosis and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. Abstract

The article examines the effect of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) on the ability of a healthcare worker to do the responsibilities of her profession, the factors used to evaluate fitness for work and the role of the occupational health service (OHS) in assisting the employment of the worker. It cites as example the case of a 37-year-old nurse who is experiencing pain, paresthesia, and weakness and loss of sensitivity in her fingers and thumbs. CTS is an upper limb disorder (ULD) due to the compression of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel of the wrist.
