OBJECTIVE: This research aims to investigate the effects of web‐based mind map learning techniques in the nursing process on students' ability to investigate the nursing diagnosis, descriptive characteristics, and the etiological and risk factors. DESIGN: In this experimental study, 91 nursing students enrolled in a state university in a city in Turkey in the 2020–2021 academic year were included. METHODS: Data were collected using a test for determining the level of knowledge about the nursing diagnosis and the factors affecting the diagnosis, case sample, and care plan. In the teaching of the nursing process, the experimental group students (n = 42) experienced the web‐based mind map learning technique, while the control group students (n = 49) experienced the lecture and question‐answer teaching methods. FINDINGS: The mean scores of the experimental group in terms of reaching the nursing diagnosis, descriptive characteristics, and the etiological and risk factors were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). The findings showed that the experimental group scored significantly higher than the control group in making accurate diagnoses (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The web‐based mind map learning technique used in teaching the nursing process favorably affected the students' ability to determine the nursing diagnosis, descriptive characteristics, and etiological and risk factors. The findings suggest that the web‐based mind map learning technique should be used in teaching the nursing process. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Active learning in nursing process teaching should be promoted using different teaching techniques. Teaching the nursing process with different teaching techniques has the potential to to increase the knowledge and skills of students and thus improve the quality of nursing care. This study aims to determine the meaning of death for nursing students and their attitudes toward dignified death principles. The descriptive study was conducted with nursing students studying at a state university in Turkey. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Personal Meanings of Death Scale (PMDS), and the Assessment Scale of Attitudes toward the Principles of Dying with Dignity (ASAPDD). A positive and low-level significant relationship was determined between the students' age and the scores for the PMDS subdimensions and the ASAPDD. It was found that the students had positive perceptions of death and adopted the principles of a dignified death. It was determined that an increase in the students' perceptions of death positively affected their adoption of the principles of a dignified death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and needs of family caregivers of stroke patients who require physical restraints. The themes and sub-themes that emerged included "the reason for the use of PR" (disruptive behaviors of the patient and personal reasons of caregivers), "the turmoil of having to use PR" (inevitableness, comparing benefits and harms, the emotional effect of PR, and physical effects), and "unmet needs and suggestions" (unmeet needs and suggestions). The Ilgın geothermal field that is the oldest and most important spa of the Konya Region is located in Central Turkey. The Ilgın geothermal field has five geothermal wells and three hot water springs with flow rates of 40–130 L/s, temperatures 26–42°C and depths of 120–300 m. In the present study, detailed hydrogeochemical investigations are carried out to understand the geothermal energy potential of the thermal waters. The chemical properties of the cold and hot waters collected from the field were determined and the classification and usage possibilities of the waters were investigated. The thermal well water samples have the same Cl, B and Li concentrations in rainy and dry seasons, but those of the other samples are variable in rainy and dry seasons. This suggests the surface water mixtures were constant in hot water wells or that the precipitation times were long. In the Li‐Rb‐Cs diagram, the Li/Cs ratios of hot waters are 6.53–8.61 in the rainy period and 6.28–8.47 in the dry period, indicating that they are derived from acidic rocks. According to their isotopic composition, it can be said that the waters are of meteoric origin. According to the Langelier, the Ryznar and the Puckorius Saturation Indexes, the waters can precipitate carbonate. The waters interacted with gypsum and anhydrite zones based on the Halite Saturation Index, while the waters are associated with dolomite‐rich rocks in terms of the Dolomite Saturation Index. Silica and cation geothermometers except Na‐K applicated to the Ilgın geothermal waters yielded similar reservoir temperature estimates (e.g., 13–76°C for rainy period, 10–80°C for dry period). However, reservoir temperature from the other estimates (Na‐K geothermometers, enthalpy‐chloride diagram and enthalpy‐silica mixture model) are higher than 103°C. Taken as whole, the temperature estimates exhibit little agreement between the different geothermometry calculations suggesting that the Ilgın geothermal waters represent immature waters, and water‐rock equilibrium in the geothermal reservoir was not fully attained. Objective: The determination of nutritional knowledge and nutrition literacy among nursing students will enable nursing departments to establish the needs and solutions to enhance nutrition education in their education programs. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the nutrition literacy and nutrition knowledge level of nursing students. Method: The study data were collected with 'Information Form', 'Anthropometric Measurements', 'Nutrition Knowledge Level Scale for Adults', and 'Evaluation Instrument of Nutrition Literacy on Adults'. Analyzes were performed using descriptive and nonparametric tests. Results: The score of nutrition knowledge is 56.6 ± 6.8 and 50.5% of them have a good nutrition knowledge level. The total nutrition literacy score is 28.6 ± 4.4 and 91.6% of them have a sufficient nutrition literacy level. It was no significant difference between students' characteristic features and nutrition knowledge score and nutrition literacy total score (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the nutrition knowledge score and the nutrition literacy total score and the nutrition literacy sub-sections scores (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It has been determined that the nutrition knowledge and nutrition literacy levels of nursing students correlated with each other. To improve students' nutrition knowledge levels, as well as to improve their nutrition literacy and prevent non-communicable diseases nutrition lessons should be included in the curriculum. Background: Primary school teachers play an important role in furnishing children with basic knowledge about health literacy and awareness of COVID‐19. This study was conducted to determine the levels of health literacy and COVID‐19 awareness among preservice primary school teachers and the factors associated with this. Methods: The sample of this cross‐sectional and correlational study consists of 978 preservice primary school teachers studying at 4 major universities in Turkey. The participation rate was 90.14%. Data were collected with 3 questionnaires, the Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Health Literacy Scale, and the COVID‐19 Awareness Scale. Results: The mean score of the Health Literacy scale was 105.16 (SD = 13.04). The mean scores of the Contagion Precaution Awareness, Awareness of Following Current Developments, and Hygiene Precaution Awareness subscales of the Coronavirus Awareness Scale were 34.27 (SD = 6.19), 12.94 (SD = 4.34), and 11.69 (SD = 3.60), respectively. It was determined that the total health literacy score was affected by gender, school, and grade/year (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) and that COVID‐19 awareness was affected by gender, age, grade/year, school, having contracted COVID‐19 or not, and being vaccinated or not in the various subscales (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Preservice primary school teachers' health literacy was found to be sufficient with a moderate level of COVID‐19 awareness. We recommend planning interventions for preservice primary school teachers that will improve their health literacy and COVID‐19 awareness, taking influential factors into account when doing this planning. Purpose: Students have an opportunity to integrate their theoretical knowledge into practice, develop skills to provide quality nursing care and gain clinical experience by using care plans. For this reason, it is important and necessary to identify students' feelings, opinions and behaviors regarding care plans. This study aims to evaluate students' opinions about working with a care plan to develop a realistic practice and achievable goals in clinical training of mental health nursing education. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 90 senior nursing students were enrolled in this study, and data were collected from 63 students who received informed consent. In the data collection, a structured "Learning-Teaching Process Assessment Form" which consists of two parts created by the researchers in accordance with the qualitative research model was applied at the end of training period. The data were analyzed manually by researchers with "thematic analysis" method. Findings: The analysis of data revealed three categories and ten themes. More than half of the students stated that they were not satisfied with the care plan, but they found working with a care plan as realistic, whereas the majority of them found it difficult planning a care plan, but found it beneficial to working with the care plan. Turkey has vastly increased the scale of its investment in public diplomacy tools. Although Turkey is considered one of the world's worst jailers of journalists, its media market is one of the fastest-growing in the world. In 2015, the Istanbul-based English-language TRT World was launched with the slogan 'where news inspires change', The channel promised to provide impartial coverage of global news, with its experienced journalists addressing global audiences. In this study, we investigate the interplay between public diplomacy and editorial policies at TRT World. After conducting in-depth interviews with TRT World journalists, we argue that the channel has shifted its style from being Turkey's public diplomacy tool into becoming the AKP's voice to the world. Purpose: To determine the relationship between nurses' cognitive flexibility and happiness and the factors affecting them. Design and Methods: A Nurse Information Form prepared by the researchers, a Cognitive Flexibility Inventory, and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire Short Form were administered to 722 nurses working at the Istanbul Medical Faculty Hospital. This was a descriptive and cross‐sectional study. Results: Nurses' cognitive flexibilities had a positive and significant relationship with happiness (p < 0.05). The power of explaining happiness was R2 = 28.6% for cognitive flexibility. Conclusion: Regarded as a significant factor for people's happiness, the impact of cognitive flexibility on nurses' happiness was examined in this study. Purpose: This study investigated whether the professional values of nursing students can predict their ethical decision‐making levels. Design and Methods: The study used a descriptive and cross‐sectional research design. The study sample consisted of 130 senior nursing students. The data were collected from the Student Information Form, Nursing Professional Values Scale, and Nursing Dilemma Test (NDT). The data were evaluated using Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Findings: A significant correlation was found between students' professional values and their mean PLT total scores (p < 0.01). Also, a negative correlation was found between students' professional values and the total mean practical thinking scores (p < 0.01). Professional values of the students explained 21.2% of the total PLT score and 0.08% of the total practical thinking score. Conclusion: The professional values of the students affect their principal and practical thinking skills in ethical dilemmas. Implications for Nursing Practice: It is recommended to discuss the ethical dilemmas observed or experienced by the students in their clinical practice in the field, increase the awareness of the students, and teach them how to deal with ethical dilemmas. Purpose: The aim of the research is to determine the relationship between the gender role approaches and the sexual care attitudes, beliefs, and self‐efficacy of nursing students. Design and methods: This cross‐sectional study included 109 nursing students. Findings: A negative correlation was found between the Gender Roles Attitude Scale and the Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (p < 0.001). A positive correlation was found between the Gender Roles Attitude Scale and the self‐efficacy in clinical performance scale total score and its assessment, diagnosis, planning, and implementation subscales (p < 0.05). Practice implications: This study is considered to be useful to specify the education and awareness strategies that will contribute to better preparation of the nursing students for sexual health services. Purpose: To determine the relationship between attitude towards nursing diagnosis, critical thinking motivation, and problem‐solving skills of nursing students during distance learning. Method: The descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 450 first‐year nursing students from four universities. The "Positions on Nursing Diagnosis Scale," "Critical Thinking Motivational Scale," and "Problem Solving Inventory" were used for data collection in June–July 2021. Findings: The students' mean score of nursing diagnosis perception was 114.90 ± 18.47, the score for expectancy main subdimension of critical thinking motivation was 4.17 ± 1.16 and the score for value main subdimension was 4.81 ± 1.12, and score for problem‐solving skills was 90.65 ± 19.03. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between nursing diagnosis perception and subdimension of critical thinking motivation scores (p < 0.001) and problem‐solving skills score (p < 0.001). The linear regression model established to examine the effect of other scales on nursing diagnosis perception was found to be statistically significant (F = 17.516, p < 0.001). As the expectancy score increases by one unit, the perception of nursing diagnosis score increases 3.452 times (p = 0.001), the cost score increases by one unit, the perception of nursing diagnosis score increases by 3.894 (p = 0.001), and the problemsolving skills score increases by one unit, the perception of nursing diagnosis score decreases by 0.246 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: To conclude that nursing diagnosis perception, critical thinking motivation, and problem‐solving skills of nursing students were high and have a relationship with each other during distance education. As nursing diagnosis perception scores of students increase, their critical thinking motivation and problem‐solving skills also increase. Implications for Nursing Practice: The high skills of critical thinking and problem solving have an important place effectively to identify the nursing diagnosis more quickly and easily in the nursing care process. Purpose: To explore the views and experiences of nursing students about evaluating the sexual health of individuals with mental disorders. Design and Methods: A phenomenological approach was used. The purposeful sampling method gathered 11 nursing students. Data were collected in‐depth interviews, which were analyzed using Colaizzi's method of data analysis. Findings: The findings were grouped under three themes: Barriers to sexual health evaluation, lack of supervision and knowledge, and increasing personal growth. Practice Implications: Barriers to sexual health evaluation need to be determined. Educators and clinicians should supervise students during clinical placement. Background: There are many factors, which affect the bowel evacuation of neurosurgical intensive care unit (NICU) patients, resulting in constipation. Aim and objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate effect of abdominal massage on bowel evacuation and the risk of constipation in NICU patients. Design: A prospective, randomized‐controlled clinical trial. Methods: The sample of this study included 80 NICU patients. The patients were randomly assigned to abdominal massage and control groups. The constipation risk of all the patients was assessed with Constipation Risk Assessment Scale (CRAS). The patients in the abdominal massage group received a total of 30 minutes of massage, 15 minutes every morning and evening, until the first defecation. The bowel sounds of all patients in the abdominal massage and control groups were assessed on a daily basis. The days when bowel sounds were heard and the first defecation took place were recorded in a Bowel Evacuation Form. Results: The risk of constipation was higher in the patients in the abdominal massage (CRAS score 19.02 ± 1.81) and control groups (CRAS score 20.45 ± 2.61). The time of return of bowel sounds and the time of the first defecation were earlier in the abdominal massage group, compared to the control group (P <.05). In the control group, there was a weak correlation (P =.004) between the CRAS score and the time of return of bowel sounds, while there was a moderate correlation between the CRAS score and the time of the first defecation (P <.001). Conclusion: Our study results show that the risk of constipation is high in NICU patients, and abdominal massage is an effective nursing intervention to shorten the time of return of bowel sounds and the time of the first defecation. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses can safely apply abdominal massage to improve bowel evacuation in NICU patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of ShotBlocker and local vibration on the perceived pain and satisfaction during intramuscular antibiotic injection. The sample of the randomized controlled experimental study consisted of 100 patients (32 in vibration group, 35 in ShotBlocker group, 33 in control group) who applied to the adult emergency clinic for antibiotic (amoxicillin/cefuroxime sodium) injection between April and May 2021. The study data were collected using the Structured Information Form, VAS for Pain and VAS for Satisfaction. CONSORT statement was followed for reporting. After the intramuscular antibiotic injection, a significant difference was found between the groups in terms of the mean scores of VAS for Pain and VAS for Injection Satisfaction (p <.001). It was determined that local vibration application was more effective in reducing the pain and in increasing satisfaction that occurs during intramuscular antibiotic injection according to ShotBlocker and control groups. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess first-year nursing students' data collection, identification of NANDA-I nursing diagnoses according to the data collected, and their perceptions of nursing diagnoses based on the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) model. Methodology: The study data were collected using the Perceptions of Nursing Diagnosis Survey and student questionnaire form, and the students' data collection forms and care plans. Results: The most commonly used diagnoses by students included impaired sleep pattern, lack of knowledge, and risk of infection. However, it was observed that none of the students made any diagnoses related to the activities of controlling body temperature, working and playing, or expressing sexuality. Conclusions: It was concluded that the students did not collect enough data related to the activity of expressing sexuality, had difficulty collecting data related to elimination, and had a moderately negative perception of nursing diagnoses. Purpose: This study aims to examine the effect of nursing students' life satisfaction and psychological well‐being on their perceived happiness levels. Method: The study, which was designed as a descriptive and cross‐sectional study was carried out in Turkey with 264 students of nursing. Findings: Students' life satisfaction and happiness (r = 0.722), psychological well‐being and happiness (r = 0.743), and psychological well‐being and life satisfaction (r = 0.689) were found to be positively and highly correlated. Students' gender and perception of income status and general health status affected their happiness levels. It was revealed that life satisfaction and psychological well‐being predict happiness (63.6%). Practice implications: The factors of life satisfaction and psychological well‐being play a decisive role in the happiness of nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study investigated nursing students' levels of internet addiction (IA) and time management (TM) skills. Design and Methods: This cross‐sectional descriptive study was conducted with 400 nursing students of a university in Turkey. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, IA Scale, and TM Inventory. Findings: The IA scale and TM inventory mean scores were 40.83 ± 14.81 and 81.34 ± 11.91, respectively. A significantly negative relationship between students' level of IA and TM skills was found (p <0.05). The introduction of invasive exotic species can have strong ecological impacts on the native biota, with direct consequences for commercial fisheries. Feeding ecology studies are among the primary sources for improving predictions related to community structures, for example, by revealing potential competitive interactions between native and invasive species. We compared the stomach contents and studied diet overlaps among a native (Mullus barbatus) and two invasive (Upeneus moluccensis and U. pori) mullid species, collected off the coasts of the northeastern Levantine where invasive mullids have been part of the ecosystem for more than half a century. We also assessed the effect of sex, sampling period, depth and size on stomach contents. Schoener's index indicated significant diet overlaps between U. moluccensis–U. pori and U. moluccensis–M. barbatus. Diets of U. pori and M. barbatus did not significantly overlap, which was explained by their differing depth preferences. Assessment of stomach contents showed that Crustacea, specifically Decapoda, was the main prey group across the studied mullid species. Polychaeta was also of high importance in the diet of the native M. barbatus, but not for the two invasive Upeneus species. A trophic level analysis revealed the two invasive mullids to have a higher trophic level than the native species (U. moluccensis: 3.58, U. pori: 3.55 versus M. barbatus: 3.38). The lack of a clear separation in habitat and diet preferences documented here between native and invasive mullids may pose a risk for the persistence of the economically valuable native M. barbatus in the Mediterranean Sea. This descriptive qualitative study was planned to determine the views of intern nursing students about death and end-of-life care. The study was completed with 12 intern students based on the criterion of data saturation. As a result of the study, the categories of 'end,' 'uncertainty,' 'fear,' 'beginning,' 'helplessness' under the theme of death, 'ensuring peace,' 'continuing communication' 'providing psychosocial/spiritual support,' 'acting in conformity with principles of ethics/morality,' 'continuing to provide physical care,' 'supporting the family,' 'making the best use of the limited remaining time or helping the patient's last wishes come true' under the theme of end-of-life care emerged. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nursing students' perception of spiritual care and their attitudes towards death. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Turkey between March and April 2021 with 601 nursing students using the Google Forms questionnaire. The "Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS)" and "Attitude towards Death Scale (ATDS)" were utilised to assist with data collection and analysis. While there was no relationship between the students' total SSCRS and total ATDS scores, there was a positive relationship between the total SSCRS and the Neutral Acceptance–Approach Acceptance Subscale (r = 0.129, p = 0.002), and a negative relationship between SSCRS and the Fear of Death and Avoidance of Death Subscale (r = − 0.097, p = 0.017). Providing support in terms of spiritual care and viewing spiritual care as related to nursing were related to the total SSCRS score. Alcohol use, viewing spiritual care as related to nursing, self-perceptions of spirituality, and fear of death were associated with the total ATDS score (p < 0.05). It is recommended that spiritual care and death perceptions be addressed more comprehensively in the educational curriculum of nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to determine breast cancer fatalism in women and investigate the relationship between women's cervical cancer and pap smear test health beliefs with religious orientation and fatalism. The study, which was conducted as a descriptive and relational screening one, was conducted in the eastern part of Turkey between July and August 2019. The study was conducted with 357 women who were not diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer, and who were not pregnant. A positive, significant relationship was found between the Religious Orientation Scale total mean score and Health Motivation and Pap smear Benefit Perception sub-scale mean score. A positive, significant relationship was found between the Fatalism Tendency Scale total mean score and Sensitivity, Importance Perception, Pap smear Benefit Perception and Pap smear Barrier Perception sub-scale mean scores (p <.05). The participating women were found to have a low level of breast cancer fatalism. Religious Orientation and Fatalism Tendency were found to have affected the Cervical Cancer and Pap Smear Test Health Beliefs. Introduction: Palliative care (PC) is a holistic philosophy of care that can only be obtained through the awareness of public and healthcare professionals, PC training and good integration into the health system. Depending on health system structures, there are differences in PC models and organisations in various countries. This study is designed to evaluate the current status of PC services in Turkey, which is strongly supported by national health policies. Methods: The data were collected through official correspondence with the Ministry of Health, Provincial Directorate of Health and hospital authorities. Numbers of patients who received inpatient PC, the number of hospital beds, diagnosis of disease, duration of hospitalisation, the first three symptoms as the cause of hospitalisation, opioid use, place of discharge and mortality rates were evaluated. Results: A total of 48,953 patients received inpatient PC support in 199 PC centres with 2,429 beds over a 26‐month period. The most frequent diagnosis for hospitalisation was cancer (35%), and the most common symptom was pain (25%). Opioids were used in 26.7% of patients. The present study was designed to determine the relation between attitudes to death and perceptions of spiritual care in nursing students. It is a descriptive study and included 290 fourth-year nursing students (intern students). Data were collected with a descriptive characteristics form, Frommelt Attitude Towards Care of the Dying Instrument and Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale. SPSS version 21 was used for data analysis. There was a significant positive relation between the mean scores for Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale and Frommelt Attitude Towards Care of the Dying Instrument. The objective of this study is to determine the communication skills and empathic tendencies of nursing and midwifery students to sexuality/reproductive pattern section of the care plan. The sample of this descriptive cross-sectional study consists of 665 students studying in the midwifery and nursing department of a state university in Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey and agreeing to participate in the study as volunteers. Data of the study were collected using "Descriptive Characteristics Form for Students", "Communication Skills Assessment Scale (CSAS)" and "Emphatic Tendency Scale". Obtained data were assessed by using number, percent, mean and standard deviation as well as Mann–Whitney U Test, Kruskal–Wallis Test, t test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation test. The average age of students participating in the study was 20.81 ± 1.80 years, and 53.8% of them expressed that the society they lived in had a restrictive perspective on the concept of sexuality. A great majority of students think that cultural structure and religious beliefs are significant factors in the formation of sexual taboos. The study found out that 64% of the students could not ask the questions in the reproductive pattern section of the care plan, most of them did not want to be asked it themselves, and 70.5% of them were uncomfortable with asking these questions due to privacy. Approximately fifty-six percent (56.1%) of students thought that the concept of sexuality did not fall within a nurse's responsibilities. Approximately fifty-six percent (56.1%) of them did not want to focus on the subject more during courses. Average total score of students on CSAS was 98.74 ± 13.05, average total score on the emphatic tendency scale was 67.31 ± 7.98 and a positive correlation was found between both scores. In this study, it was detected that students left the sexuality/reproductive pattern section in the care plan empty, therefore they did not/could not handle a patient's potential problems related to sexuality/reproductive pattern. Background: Violence against women maintains its importance. Nursing and midwifery students should be able to identify symptoms of violence against women. Healthcare providers have received insufficient education, either before or after graduation, for identifying violence cases and for dealing with interfamilial violence against women. Aims: This study is conducted to identify nursing and midwifery students' ability to recognise symptoms of violence against women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included nursing and midwifery students attending the Ege University, School of Nursing, the Celal Bayar University, Health School of Higher Education and Health School of Izmir Atatürk (N = 557). The convenience sampling method was used. There were 114 students who declined to participate in this study as they did not want to answer questions about violence (n = 443). Results: It was determined that 94.6% of the students were knowledgeable about violence against women. The scores obtained by students from the physical symptom sub-dimension were 8.35 ± 1.65 and from the emotional symptom sub-dimension were 11.97 ± 2.19. The total scores obtained from the scale were 20.32 ± 3.14. A statistically significant difference was found between students' age, gender, nursing or midwifery section, being subjected to violence, receiving violence awareness training and reporting violence in the sub-dimensions and total scores of the scale (p < 0.05). Impact Statement: Having knowledge and self-confidence increased students' awareness in identifying the symptoms of violence. Conclusion: The participant's limited ability to identify symptoms of violence is thought to result from inadequate emphasis on violence issues in the curricula. Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of obstetric admissions to an intensive care unit (ICU) and assess the utility of Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II), Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) and the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Methods: This study is consisted of 160 patients admitted to an ICU during the antenatal period or within 7 days at the postpartum period. Clinical characteristics and ICU scores were evaluated. Results: The rate of admission to the ICU was 7.8/1000 deliveries. Four cases ended with maternal mortality (2.5%). The most common hospitalization indications were hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, cardiovascular disorders and obstetric hemorrhage, at 40 (25%), 34 (21.2%), and 31 (19.3%) cases, respectively. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis for prediction of maternal mortality revealed area under curve (AUC) values as 0.971 both for APACHE II and predicted mortality rate (PMR), and 24.5 and 47.1 were determined as the cut-offs with sensitivities of 100%. AUCs were also 0.901 and 0.929 for the initial and worst SOFA score, respectively. The cut-off value for the initial and worst SOFA score was 3.5, with a sensitivity of 100%, and was 10 with a specificity of 98.9%, respectively. Conclusion: APACHE II and PMR overpredict maternal mortality, but those higher scores predict maternal mortality. Higher SOFA scores are related with maternal mortalities with high specificity. Background: Barriers to palliative care can also be seen during the nursing education period. Assessment is needed to determine whether the training program for palliative care in nursing education is effective. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine validity and reliability of The Palliative Care Self-Reported Practices Scale (PCPS) and The Palliative Care Difficulties Scale (PCDS) in Turkey. Methodology: This study comparative study included a correlational method to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of PCDS and PCPS. The sample group of the study was composed of 346 nurses and nursing students. The data were obtained by using the Nurse/Nursing Student Information Form, PCDS and PCPS. Results: The total Cronbach α of the PDCS was .81, the total factor loading was 0.64-0.92 and the total variance was 68.8%. The total Cronbach α of the PCPS was 0 .91, the total factor loading was 0.58-0.87, and the total variance explained was 76.5%. As a result of the PDCS factor analysis, we determined the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient as 0.74, the Barlett test χ² as 1903.117 and as a result of the adolescent form factor analysis, we determined the KMO as 0.89, and the Barlett test χ² as 3711.049. Conclusion: This study suggests that PCDS and PCPS are valid and reliable instruments for measuring palliative care difficulties and self-reported palliative care practices. Background: Violence is a community mental health problem and the trouble of human rights. The rates of violence against women are very high in the World and Turkey. Aim: This study was conducted to determine how men define domestic violence against women. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 160 men who worked in Söktaş Textile Factory between December 2015 and March 2016. In the collection of data, data collection form which was prepared by the researchers according to the literature, percentage, frequency and chi-square test was used in data analysis. Results: 91.9% of men stated that if they were preferred the chances they would not want to be opposite sex and 36.9% of men do not want girls' sex. 18.8% of men exposured to violence from family during their life, 24.4% witnessed domestic violence. 94.4% of men accept the domestic violence against women as disturbing and a major public health problem. At the same time, 30% of men who experience violence in the family throughout his life stated that violence may be a solution (p=.019), more than half of the men who witnessed domestic violence throughout the life stated that women who experience violence is not need to share with others in this case (p=.000). Conclusions: In this study, there was no significant relationship between the expression for domestic violence and socio-demographic variables. Although there is low frequency, has been found behavior of violence against women of men, women's education and working life, have negative opinions related to sexual harassment of women. Aim: This study investigated the resilience of nurses, the factors that contribute to resilience, and its relationship with perceptions of social support and job satisfaction. Background: Resilience plays an important role in how nurses cope with work‐related stressors. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted with 242 nurses working at three public hospitals in Turkey. Data were collected using a descriptive data form, the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale (MJSS). Results: Nurses' mean scores on the RSA, MSPSS, and MJSS were 99.80 ± 4.43, 66.66 ± 13.30, and 3.31 ± 0.72, respectively. Statistically significant relationships were detected between resilience and five factors: age, gender, mother's educational level, work experience and working hours (p < 0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation was also observed between MJSS score and both total RSA and family support subscale scores (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The resilience, perceived social support, and job satisfaction of participating nurses were moderate. Significant factors in their resilience were age, gender, mother's educational level, work experience, working hours, perceived social support and job satisfaction. PURPOSE: This study was carried out descriptively and retrospectively with the purpose of determining nursing diagnoses used by intern students in their clinical practice. METHODS: The study data were obtained by checking the care plans of the internship files of 248 students studying at a nursing faculty. FINDINGS: The students determined 77 different nursing diagnoses in 13 domains of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA)‐I taxonomy II. The total number of nursing diagnosis used in the care plans was 1,469. CONCLUSION: Most of the diagnoses determined by the students were in the "safety/ protection" domain; however, they determined no diagnoses in the "life principles" domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nursing process is a planned process based on problem solving approach in defining and solving patient problems. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the nursing diagnoses of patients who have been treated in acute psychiatric clinics in the recent year. Method: Socio-demographic and clinical data of 16.073 in-patients who have been treated in acute psychiatric clinics of a public hospital between November 2016 and November 2017 were analyzed descriptively and retrospectively by using the hospital information management system. The data of the research was collected between 1 and 31 December 2017. Care plans that were made by the nurses were reviewed by the researchers taking into account the functional health models (FHM) and the diagnostic system of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) and recorded in the data collection form. The data were calculated in percentage by using SPSS (Version 21.0) program. Results: Nurses collected the highest percentage data about health perception and management (80.9%), role and relationship function (41.6%), coping/stress tolerance (28.2%) among the patients who were evaluated in accordance with FHM in the research. It was determined that nurses recorded 41 NANDA nursing diagnoses data belonging to total of 16.073 patients by entering them 1.330.976 times hospital information management systems. It was determined that the nursing diagnoses which were mostly recorded by nurses were the risk of falling (73%), deterioration in social interaction (41.32%), risk of violence against others (16.50%), anxiety (13.06%), risk of transmission of infection (11%), lack of selfcare (5.24%), ineffective individual coping (7.41%) and deterioration in thought processes (6.55%). When nursing diagnoses were examined in terms of standard terminology, it was determined that 41 of the diagnoses did not comply with the standard terminology and were expressed and recorded in different forms. Conclusion: It was observed that the diagnoses identified by nurses according to the FHM were about the psychosocial field which is more easily detectable in relation to the psychiatric field, and that they were not analyzed in the way that provide holistic nursing care by excluding the data regarding the sexuality-reproduction and the values and beliefs. ABSTRACT: Background: Medication administration via enteral tubes is a complex and key application for which nurses in intensive care units are responsible. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate drug administrations via enteral tubes by nurses in intensive care units. Methods: This research was conducted using a descriptive and cross‐sectional research design. The study was conducted with 289 nurses at intensive care units in hospitals in İzmir, Turkey. The data of the study were collected with the ‘Sociodemographic Information Form’ and the ‘Enteral Medication Administrations Questionnaire’, which was designed in accordance with the literature and consists of questions on interventions before, during and following medication administrations via enteral tubes. Results: It was found that more than half the nurses (62.3%) use nasogastric tubes for medication administrations and that all of them use the enteral way for the administration of medications in the form of tablets, while 58.8% use this method to administer the medications in the form of enteric‐coated tablets. It was determined that approximately half the nurses (52.6%) apply more than one medication separately, and a majority (84.1%) use tap water to wash the enteral tube. Conclusions: Enteral medication administration practices are inconsistent. Some nurses use unsafe practices and may therefore compromise patient care. Relevance to clinical practice: Conduction of education programmes on medication administration via enteral tubes for intensive care unit nurses is important in improving nurses' knowledge. Objective: To identify publications from Turkey with highest “genuine” contributions to the field of medicine in the past 15 years and evaluate the performance trend. Materials and Methods: Based on the data from Web of Science, publications originating from the institutions in Turkey that were received by June 2016 with ≥85 citations were identified, after excluding papers having more than a minor share by international authors. Results: In total, 231 medicine-related papers were published, each receiving ≥85 citations. The articles were of a citation level of top global 8-10% papers. Five-sixths of the articles were published until 2006, wherein a mean of 32 papers were generated annually. Thereafter, the number of papers declined drastically since 2010, compared with the similar performance that was anticipated. It is estimated that only a global share of 1 per mille has been generated in Turkey. Internal medicine, led by cardiology, rheumatology, endocrinology, and neurosciences were better represented than the overall average. Health issues encountered more widely than those in other populations formed frequent topics of contribution. Medical faculties of Harran University, the ancient universities of three major cities, and the Military Medical Academy were front-runners. Only 36 medical faculties and 14 public and private hospitals served as sources. Conclusion: The serious decline in Turkey’s contribution to the field of medicine in the past 7-10 years is deeply concerning. The general atmosphere surrounding the scientific institutions raises minimal hope for rebuilding a milieu favorable to promote research in the near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study aimed at identifying the constipation levels of older people and their interventions for recovery. Methodology: This descriptive study was conducted between the dates of 04.07.2016–15.01.2017 with 309 patients aged 65 and above, who applied to the internal (internal diseases, cardiology, chest diseases, neurology) clinics in a state hospital. The study data was collected by using an introductory information form, Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and Rome-III Diagnostic Criteria for Constipation. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistical methods and chi-square test. Results: In this study, the average age was 72.72±7.19, and 57% of participants were female. Of the study participants, 64.7% reported having constipation problems and 18.1% reported having delayed colon excretion. 39.7% of older people drank plenty of water, 29.2% used laxatives, 24.9% tried to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, 22.7% ate dried apricots when they had constipation. We found that older people, whose daily fluid intake was low, experienced constipation more frequently (p<0.008). The study compared the participants’ gastrointestinal system symptoms and constipation cases, and found that older people with constipation experienced problems such as indigestion (p<0.00), bloating (p<0.00), rectal pain (p<0.01), swallowing difficulties (p<0.01), lack of appetite (p<0.01) more than those without constipation. Conclusion: This study found that older people frequently had constipation, and they consumed plenty of fluids and used laxatives to treat it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To compare awareness of and attitudes to research and participation in research activities between nursing students taking a nursing research course and those not taking the course. Methods: A quantitative descriptive-comparative study was conducted in a nursing department of a university in Aegean Region in Turkey between 16 November and 11 December 2015. Totally 860 students were enrolled the study. Of the 380 students took a research course, and 480 did not take course agreed to participate. No sample selection was performed. The participation rate was 60% (n:522). Results: The mean age of the students was 20.72±0.95 years, 86.3% of the students were female (n=451). More than half (63.4%) of the students taking a research course and 34.5% of the nurses not taking it reported that they participated in a scientific meetings. A significantly higher rate of the students taking the course participated in scientific meetings (χ²=43.12, p=.000), involvement in a research activity (χ²= 6.55, p=.001), participated in research as a subject (χ²=5.90, p=.019) and collected data on behalf of a researcher (χ²=5.99, p=.016). The students taking the course got the total mean score 121.49±7.30 for the scale and the mean item score 4.19±0.53. Those not taking the course got the mean total score 120.25±6.6 for the scale and the mean item score 4.14±0.54. The former group of the students received higher scores for awareness of and attitudes to research without a significant difference (U=3.219; p:0.33). Conclusions: Both groups of the students are similar in terms of their awareness of and attitudes to research and advances in nursing. However, a higher rate of the students taking a research course actively contributed to research by joining scientific meetings and research activities and collecting data for another researcher’s study.
