After various setbacks, the latest being the Arab uprisings of 2011, pan-Arabism has made a return starting in the second decade of the 21st century, but in the shape of neo-pan-Arabism. Thus, neo-pan-Arabism would appear to be the legitimate heir of pan-Arabism. Unlike the former, however, it does not appear to be an ideology, but rather a mere tool of Arab regimes to legitimise their control over their populations. Neo-pan-Arabism, then, seems to be a populist rhetoric, with limited action on the ground and aimed primarily at domestic audiences. The cases of Algeria and Tunisia - two countries outside the traditional pan-Arab nucleus -, presented through the actions and words of their respective leaders, illustrate how regimes are using neo-pan-Arabism for their domestic legitimation. Meskat is a widespread water harvesting system in the Sahel region of Tunisia. Like other systems in semi-arid zones, it attempts to increase the amount of water available for crops, through runoff production sectors (impluvium) and water distribution sectors for sporadic irrigation (mankaa). However, often, in a Mediterranean environment, rainfall can be torrential: it is both a water resource and a risk of erosion. Therefore, these systems have to be adapted to local climatic, topographic and lithological conditions. In the case of meskat, they are "made to measure" designs, with a fragile balance between the maximum use of the water resource and the minimum risk of erosion. This study is based on spatial analysis techniques with GIS, an environmental contextualization, especially geomorphic, and a quantification of its basic topographic characteristics (altitudes, altitude difference and slopes). To do this, a detailed mapping of systems has been carried out, together with a topographic and land use quantification from a random sampling of points. In this way, the degree of presence and the production/irrigation ratio have been quantified. It seeks to recognize the existence of different types of designs and their most relevant characteristics. The initial hypothesis is confirmed that these are systems with solutions adapted to the environment, with wide variability, but with recognizable typologies, basically systems located in thalweg and glacis. This study investigates the role of political consensus in accelerating economic reforms and finds a significant negative effect of political consensus on the speed of reform votes in the parliament in Tunisia. We analyze the number of days until a reform bill was adopted in parliament to identify the causal effect of the consensus on accelerating reforms. Using an endogenous treatment effect model and an original database of reforms between 2012 and 2019 in Tunisia, we compare economic and social reforms with political reforms before and after the consensus. We find that political consensus is more likely to delay economic and social reforms than political reforms. This effect is driven mainly by informal mechanisms created by consensus and political instability that prevailed after the agreement. The findings indicate that consensus had a subversive effect on democratic institutions in Tunisia by creating informal processes that reduced public oversight, transparency, and law enforcement. This study examines the impact of political transformation in Tunisia and the rise of Islamic political parties on people's perceptions toward developing the Islamic finance sector in the country. We assess the extent to which the future of Islamic finance in Tunisia could be related to political Islam or if political orientation could be detrimental to the development of the country's Islamic finance. Based on a survey distributed to 1,158 Tunisian citizens, we offer an insight into how political Islam has affected the development of Islamic finance in Tunisia. We find that: (1) political orientation does not appear to be a significant determinant of the acceptance of Islamic finance; (2) religious beliefs appear to be a significant determinant of the acceptance of Islamic finance; and (3) the future development of Islamic finance in Tunisia can be linked more precisely to the country's social transformation rather than the rise to power of Islamic political parties since the Arab Spring. Draining galleries are water collection systems that occurs frequently in various geomorphic contexts of semi-arid environments. In this article, we study those that take advantage of subalveal waters by means of different construction techniques, mainly "cimbras" and "cimbra-zanjas". A comparison has been made between the Tunisian galleries and those of the Spanish SE that have these two characteristics: the exploitation of subsubalveal waters and surface detritic aquifers, and rainfall characteristics of semi-arid climates, specifically annual total rainfall between 300 and 400 mm. The work analyzes the environmental contexts of the selected galleries, especially geology, geomorphology, rainfall torrentiality and hydrology, as well as the constructive, functional characteristics and conservation status of the galleries. The results of the comparative analysis show that there are no significant differences between the galleries of both territories, neither in the necessary environmental conditions, nor in the constructive and functional characteristics adopted. Trapped between two diametrically opposite political currents-the Islamists on one side and the progressives on the other-tourism has been the object of both political instrumentalisation and religious stigma in Tunisia. Its unique circumstances, like a microcosmos that materialises these tensions, make it relevant, as it provides evidence of a triply problematic relationship: with the other, with oneself and with the past. It also serves to render the ambivalence that has all too often marked Tunisian society visible, given the image it portrays of Orient and Occident, of tradition and modernity, and of religion and politics. This is especially revealing in terms of the country's increasingly shaken state, especially following the 2011 revolution; a result of unrest and the actions surrounding the subsequent political transition, which is the subject of debate between those in favour of the democratic model and, insidious and creeping in the shadows, those that advocate theocracy. In light of this, I have chosen to devote this article to exposing the situation surrounding tourism in Tunisia as a result of this transition, making special emphasis on the unending ploys orchestrated by the Islamist party Ennahdha to appropriate tourism-since they cannot eradicate it-and convert it into a type of path that allows the country to open itself up to the halal market or, as I coin it in the article, the para-halal market. I will also address the attempts made by other Islamist currents to lay siege on tourism either by perpetuating terrorist attacks directed at tourists or by carrying out invasion campaigns to take over tourist areas. This article analyses the way young people, and particularly young women, in post-revolutionary Tunisia position themselves in the sociopolitical environment in a context of ongoing change. It therefore endeavours to reveal how these actors claim their real citizenship, in spite of the invisibility and refusals of recognition to which they are subject. Starting from the confirmation that young women are those most exposed to the different forms of injustice and inequality in different spheres, this reflection seeks to understand the way young people in general and young women in particular react to the different forms of exclusion, inequality and marginalisation to which they are exposed; specifically, to experiences of marginalisation understood in terms of lack of recognition. Informed theoretically by feminist sociological and political science research on women’s social movements and women’s engagement with public policy, this article examines the advocacy and political work of women’s rights groups in Tunisia in the area of violence against women. It locates the origins of the concern about this particular social problem, shows how the women’s rights groups worked with government agencies as well as transnational feminist networks to raise awareness and institute policy changes, and examines how their research, advocacy, and lobbying efforts have evolved. Drawing on the personal experience of the first author, who has been a longstanding participant in the Tunisian women’s rights movement, as well as on various publications by ATFD and AFTURD and related documentary data, the article shows how a relatively small feminist movement has been able to leverage its relationships with other civil society organizations to influence changes in policies, laws, and public debates. Se examina la capacidad a largo plazo de Túnez de generar empleo. Con datos de panel de 15 sectores económicos de 1983-2010, los autores estiman sus elasticidades producto-empleo a largo plazo utilizando el estimador de media grupal. Según sus resultados, la política económica debería orientarse a los sectores más intensivos en empleo: servicios y manufacturas exportadoras. Destaca la incapacidad del sector minero de absorber mano de obra, por lo que la inversión en el mismo no será productiva; asimismo, el crecimiento sin empleo a largo plazo de la hotelería y restauración induce a pensar que deberían fomentarse más las actividades paraturísticas que las turísticas. Eight accessions of Jatropha curcas (six American and two African) were sown in the south of Tunisia (Gabès) to study its agricultural properties and development under local semi-arid conditions. Traits observed included general aspects of plant development (plant height, canopy circumference, number of nodes and seed yield); leaf characteristics (petiole length, limb length, limb width and foliar surface); and seed traits (size and shape). Morphological analysis of seeds included seed image area, perimeter, length/width ratio, circularity index and J index. This index reflects the similarity of seed images with an ellipse showing differences in seed shape between accessions. Jatropha curcas genotypes introduced in Tunisia are polymorphic, their seed yield is low and variable between genotypes. Seed morphology analysis gave an indication in relation with the productivity in some of the accessions. The comparative agronomic studies are crucial before early selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the key points in the future of today's political transition in Tunisia lies in the Islamists' willingness to cooperate with the rest of the political parties to promote political change, as well as their electoral performance in the next elections. The aim of this article is to help reduce uncertainty on this issue, by clarifying its antecedents. With this aim, the author adopts as the article's area of study the strategic-relational dimensions of Tunisia's Islamist party's performance in elections. With this in mind, the author analyses the types of interaction that the Islamist party maintained in the presidential elections of 2004 and 2009 with the other political and social parties that were critical of the Ben Ali regime, and examines its causes. As a result of this, the study concludes that up to now, both the party's alignment with certain secular political and social actors from the structure of opposition to the Ben Ali regime, and its policy of confrontation with certain others, has not been based on any programmatic issue, nor on any issues of sensitivity or religious conception, but rather on the struggle to head political change and to lead a new government.
