This chapter presents the El Corrido de J. Frank Dobie, composed by Longino Guerrero in Texas. During the 1960s Guerrero wrote and recorded thirty-five songs. He continued his work in music, and in 1983, when he was sixty-seven years old, was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame as a singer and composer. The Frank Dobie corrido was not commercially recorded in 1965 but was taped and deposited in folklore archives. Guerrero had read Dobie's stories of the Mexican border and wrote the corrido, with some help from Frank Rios, as a memorial to Dobie.

This article focuses on the affiliation of printer Carl Hertzog with the Texas Folklore Society. Realizing Hertzog's propensity for tinkering with text to avoid bad page breaks, editor J. Frank Dobie instructed Hertzog not to change a word. Dobie was glad to know of Hertzog's progress on the type-setting and then reiterated that he never had the Book Club of Texas idea of exclusiveness. If a thing is worth printing, it should be worth reading. Dobie's idea is to give as wide a distribution as possible to whatever he attempts to put in print, at the same time trying to make a print look beautiful.

This chapter focuses on the conflict between the Texas Folklore Society (TFS) and the American Folklore Society. J. Frank Dobie did not start out as an enemy of the national organization but as a member of its governing body. Dobie felt the national society was not getting the full story about what was happening in Texas. On January 7, 1924, Dobie wrote to editor Franz Boas renewing his efforts to see a correct list of TFS officers in the forthcoming journal number. However, the text and the tone of his letter make it clear he had other things in mind as well.

This chapter focuses on the Southwestern Writers Collection at Southwest Texas State University at San Marcos. The writers collection is attractively situated behind doors of hand-carved first growth pine and features generously designed exhibit cases and a reading room in which scholars and students conduct research, Southwestern studies classes meet, and public events such as readings and book signings take place. Set into the wall at the end of the reading room is a capstone with a lone star taken by author J. Frank Dobie from the Bee County courthouse when it was remodeled.

This section presents a historical background of the Texas Folklore Society (TFS) from 1939 to 1943. By 1939 TFS president Frank Dobie had published six books of his own and in that same year his books "Apache Gold" and "Yaqui Silver" and "John C. Duval: First Texas Man of Letters" were to come out. The thirtieth anniversary meeting of the society coincided with San Jacinto Day in 1939. The society met April 19 to 20, 1940 in the Geology Auditorium on the University of Texas campus. The evening session began with a music program by the all-black Paramount Singers of Travis County, recruited by graduate student John Henry Faulk. In the succeeding years Faulk played an important role in the life of Dobie and the TFS.

This section presents a historical background of the Texas Folklore Society from 1926 to 1933. In April 27, 1929, TFS president Frank Dobie concluded a letter to treasurer Byron Shipp saying that the Texas Folk-Lore Society is the only child he has. Dobie gave his attention in the late twenties and early thirties on recruiting members and contributors and into collecting folklore, in the stacks and into editing, publishing and distributing the Society's publications. The founding times and the struggles for initial survival were over by 1926. However, in the following years the society still faced problems such as increasing folkloric collecting, holdings and publications. Efforts on generating money and membership expansion were undertaken.

This section presents a historical background of the Texas Folklore Society from 1917 to 1925. The Society might have lain dormant between 1917 and 1922, but TFS president Leonidas Payne did not. During his professional career Payne authored and edited literary anthologies. Payne was the one who passed the treasury on to member Frank Dobie in the society' beginning in 1922. He provided able assistance to Dobie in those first years of starting over. Some of the officers that had been elected at the 1917 meeting officiated in 1922. In the eighth annual meeting in 1922, Dobie was optimistic about the growing membership rolls, the future of the society and his own. After the April 20, 1922 meeting Dobie began work on the book "Coffee in the Gourd." He had it in print by April 19, 1923.

This article presents an acknowledgment for the contributors to the publication Corners of Texas. The Texas Folklore Society thanks the contributors for their research and for their writing. Those who do not write for publication do not realize the amount of work that is involved in such labor. The title was taken from Frank Dobie and Dick Holland, who tell about library corners that contain writings that are forever Texas. The title seemed fitting since that is where this folklore comes from, various corners of Texas.
