The role of religion in Western societies has gained renewed attention in recent years. While choirs have been studied to varying extents in the social sciences, the geography of choirs has received little attention, particularly in human geography. Using questionnaire responses from secular choir members, this exploratory study examines the possible differences and/or similarities of secular choir's sacral and/or secular activity in urban and rural spaces in Sweden. The study reveals two primary findings. First, it reveals that secular choir members engage in a mixture of secular and sacred activities, suggesting that these activities can be considered postsecular. Second, the data challenges the geographical perception of rural environments as more sacred/traditional, as they have a high proportion of secular activities. Likewise, the results questions the geographical perception of urban environments as secular/modern, as they demonstrate an even distribution of sacred activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spatial information on forest composition is invaluable for achieving scientific, ecological, and management objectives and for monitoring multiple changes in forest ecosystems. The increased flow of optical satellite data provides new opportunities to improve tree species mapping. However, the accuracy of such maps is affected by training data, and in particular on the homogeneity of individual classes. Thus, we evaluated the effect of data homogeneity in tree species classification. We performed tree species classification by considering different ways to partition data into tree species classes. The class sets considered were (i) only mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous forest classes, (ii) single-species classes, (iii) single-species, mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous classes, and (iv) single-species, mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous classes and a true mixed class. Using data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory, we varied the threshold that defined dominating species. Tree species were classified for a study area in central Sweden using Sentinel-2 data and two classification approaches: Bayesian inference and random forest (RF). Images were selected by class separability and the most informative images based on variable selection with RF. The most informative images tended to be selected by both methods. However, in forests with tree species of similar spectral behaviour, image selection on the basis of class separability was found to be more reliable. More accurate classification results were achieved as the number of classes decreased and the threshold of plot purity increased. The Bayesian classification approach of only mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous classes gave the highest OA, always greater than 90%. When discriminating between pure plots of Birch (Betula spp.), Spruce (Picea abies), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), the best OA values were 84% for Bayesian and 80% for RF. Northern peatlands provide a globally important carbon (C) store. Since the beginning of the 20th century, however, large areas of natural peatlands have been drained for biomass production across Fennoscandia. Today, drained peatland forests constitute a common feature of the managed boreal landscape, yet their ecosystem C balance and associated climate impact are not well understood, particularly within the nutrient‐poor boreal region. In this study, we estimated the net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) from a nutrient‐poor drained peatland forest and an adjacent natural mire in northern Sweden by integrating terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes with aquatic losses of dissolved organic C (DOC) and inorganic C based on eddy covariance and stream discharge measurements, respectively, over two hydrological years. Since the forest included a dense spruce‐birch area and a sparse pine area, we were able to further evaluate the effect of contrasting forest structure on the NECB and component fluxes. We found that the drained peatland forest was a net C sink with a 2‐year mean NECB of −115 ± 5 g C m−2 year−1 while the adjacent mire was close to C neutral with 14.6 ± 1.7 g C m−2 year−1. The NECB of the drained peatland forest was dominated by the net CO2 exchange (net ecosystem exchange [NEE]), whereas NEE and DOC export fluxes contributed equally to the mire NECB. We further found that the C sink strength in the sparse pine forest area (−153 ± 8 g C m−2 year−1) was about 1.5 times as high as in the dense spruce‐birch forest area (−95 ± 8 g C m−2 year−1) due to enhanced C uptake by ground vegetation and lower DOC export. Our study suggests that historically drained peatland forests in nutrient‐poor boreal regions may provide a significant net ecosystem C sink and associated climate benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Mortality due to acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) in patients with coronavirus disease‐19 (COVID‐19) differs across units, regions, and countries. These variations may be attributed to several factors, including comorbidities, acute physiological derangement, disease severity, treatment, ethnicity, healthcare system strain, and socioeconomic status. This study aimed to explore the features of patient characteristics, clinical management, and staffing that may be related to mortality among three intensive care units (ICUs) within the same hospital system in South Sweden. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed ICU patients with COVID‐19 and AHRF in Region Jönköping County, Sweden. The primary outcome was the 90‐day mortality rate. We used univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses to investigate the relationship of predictors with outcomes. Results: Between March 15, 2020, and May 31, 2021, 331 patients with AHRF and COVID‐19 were admitted to the three ICUs. There were differences in disease severity, treatments, process‐related factors, and socioeconomic factors between the units. These factors were related to 90‐day mortality. After multivariable adjustment, age, severity of acute respiratory distress syndrome, and the number of nurses per ICU‐bed independently predicted 90‐day mortality. Conclusion: Age, disease severity, and nurse staffing, but not treatment or socioeconomic status, were independently associated with 90‐day mortality among critically ill patients with AHRF due to COVID‐19. Boreal forests are important global carbon (C) sinks and, therefore, considered as a key element in climate change mitigation policies. However, their actual C sink strength is uncertain and under debate, particularly for the actively managed forests in the boreal regions of Fennoscandia. In this study, we use an extensive set of biometric-and chamber-based C flux data collected in 50 forest stands (ranging from 5 to 211 years) over 3 years (2016–2018) with the aim to explore the variations of the annual net ecosystem production (NEP; i.e., the ecosystem C balance) across a 68 km2 managed boreal forest landscape in northern Sweden. Our results demonstrate that net primary production rather than heterotrophic respiration regulated the spatio-temporal variations of NEP across the heterogeneous mosaic of the managed boreal forest landscape. We further find divergent successional patterns of NEP in our managed forests relative to naturally regenerating boreal forests, including (i) a fast recovery of the C sink function within the first decade after harvest due to the rapid establishment of a productive understory layer and (ii) a sustained C sink in old stands (131–211 years). We estimate that the rotation period for optimum C sequestration extends to 138 years, which over multiple rotations results in a long-term C sequestration rate of 86.5 t C ha−1 per rotation. Our study highlights the potential of forest management to maximize C sequestration of boreal forest landscapes and associate climate change mitigation effects by developing strategies that optimize tree biomass production rather than heterotrophic soil C emissions. Ditch cleaning (DC) is increasingly applied to facilitate forest regeneration following clear-cutting in Fennoscandinavia. However, its impact on the ecosystem carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) balances is poorly understood. We conducted chamber measurements to assess the initial DC effects on carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes in a recent forest clear-cut on wet mineral soil in boreal Sweden. Measurements were conducted in two adjacent areas over two pre-treatments (2018/19) and two years (2020/21) after conducting DC in one area. We further assessed the spatial variation of fluxes at three distances (4, 20, 40 m) from ditches. We found that DC lowered the water table level by 12 ± 2 cm (mean ± standard error) and topsoil moisture by 0.12 ± 0.01 m3 m−3. DC had a limited initial effect on the net CO2 exchange and its component fluxes. CH4 emissions were low during the dry pre-treatment years but increased particularly in the control area during the wet years of 2020/21. Distance to ditch had no consistent effects on CO2 and CH4 fluxes. Model extrapolations suggest that annual carbon emissions decreased over the four years from 6.7 ± 1.4 to 1.6 ± 1.6 t-C ha−1 year−1, without treatment differences. Annual CH4 emissions contributed <2.5% to the carbon balance but constituted 39% of the GHG balance in the control area during 2021. Purpose: Individuals with immunoglobulin G deficiency (IgGsd) often complain of fatigue. The correlation between systemic inflammation and fatigue is unknown. In this study perceived quality of life (QoL) and fatigue in individuals with IgGsd, on and off immunoglobulin replacement therapy (IgRT) were correlated to inflammatory markers in plasma to identify the subgroup that benefits from IgRT. Method: Thirty-five IgGsd-patients were sampled on three occasions: at baseline, after being on IgRT for at least 18 months, and 18 months after discontinuation of IgRT. Short form 36, EQ-5D-5L visual analogue scale and fatigue impact scale questionnaires were used for evaluation of QoL and fatigue. Furthermore, a panel of 92 inflammatory markers were analysed in plasma. Thirty-two gender- and age-matched healthy individuals were included as controls and sampled on one occasion. Results: QoL was lower and perceived fatigue higher in IgGsd compared to the controls. Severe fatigue and low QoL were associated with the need to restart IgRT (which is considered in IgGsd-individuals with a high burden of infections in Sweden). Twenty-five inflammatory factors were dysregulated in IgGsd and the plasma protein patterns were similar regardless of whether IgRT was ongoing or not. Enrichment analysis indicated IL-10 signalling as the most affected pathway. Severe fatigue was associated with decreased levels of the neurotrophic factors VEGFA and CSF-1. Conclusion: Fatigue is a major contributory factor to impaired health-related QoL in IgGsd and is related to the need for IgRT. Low-grade systemic inflammation is a potential driver of fatigue. In addition to the burden of infections, we suggest the degree of fatigue should be considered when the decision to introduce IgRT is made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: It has been suggested that age could influence the treatment-induced side effects and survival time of cancer patients. The influence of age on blood-based biomarkers, acute radiation skin reactions (ARSRs), and survival time of breast cancer patients was analysed. Materials and Methods: Two hundred ninety-three individuals, 119 breast cancer patients, and 174 healthy blood donors were included. Results: Before radiotherapy (RT), decreased levels of lymphocytes, interleukin 2, platelet-derived growth factors, and tumour necrosis factor but increased levels of monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, C-reactive protein, and macrophage inflammatory protein 1b (MIP1b) were detected in the patient group. All of the patients developed ARSRs and intensity of ARSRs was inversely related to the MIP1b level before RT. Fifteen out of 119 (13%) patients deceased during follow-up time. No influence of age (≤50 compared to >50 years) on survival time was detected (p = 0.442). Tumour recurrence, found in 11 out of 119 (9%) patients, had impact on survival time of these patients (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The level of circulating MIP1b before RT was associated with intensity of ARSRs. Tumour recurrence, but not age, was associated with poor survival time. Analysis of circulating MIP1b was low cost, rapid, and could be done in routine laboratory facility. Since RT almost always induces ARSRs, the possibility of using MIP1b as a prognostic biomarker for ARSRs is of interests for further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To explore child health professionals' experiences of the early implementation of the rotavirus vaccination in the two regions that first introduced this vaccination in Sweden. Methods: A descriptive and repeated cross‐sectional study based on a digital study‐specific questionnaire with a baseline in 2014 and with a 2‐year follow‐up in 2016. The study population consisted of nurses and doctors working in child health centres in the health care regions of Stockholm and Jönköping. Results: In Stockholm, a larger proportion of the respondents (n = 355) had concerns in 2014, in comparison with the respondents in Jönköping (n = 101), mostly about the vaccination being a new and time‐consuming task (60% versus 23%). In 2016, the overall attitude to vaccination was more positive in both regions and the levels of concern about increased workload were reduced (Stockholm, n = 519, 39%, versus Jönköping, n = 96, 10%). Challenges before and after the introduction in both regions were particularly related to how to give information about the vaccine's potential increased risk of intussusception. Conclusion: The gap between respondents' knowledge, attitudes and concerns pre‐ and post‐vaccination introduction was larger in Stockholm compared to Jönköping. Purpose: Little is known about the relationship between implant patient mortality compared to reference populations. The aim of this study was to report the mortality pattern in patients treated with dental implants up to a 15-year period, and to compare this to mortality in reference populations with regard to age at surgery, sex, and degree of tooth loss.Materials and Methods: Patient cumulative survival rate (CSR) was calculated for a total of 4,231 treated implant patients from a single clinic. Information was based on surgical registers in the clinic and the National Population Register in Sweden. Patients were arranged into age groups of 10 years, and CSR was compared to that of the reference population of comparable age and reported in relation to age at surgery, sex, and type of jaw/dentition.Results: A similar, consistent, general relationship between CSR of different age groups of implant patients and reference populations could be observed for all parameters studied. Completely edentulous patients presented higher mortality than partially edentulous patients (P < .05). Furthermore, implant patients in younger age groups showed mortality similar to or higher than reference populations, while older patient age groups showed increasingly lower mortality than comparable reference populations for edentulous and partially edentulous patients (P < .05).Conclusion: A consistent pattern of mortality in different age groups of patients compared to reference populations was observed, indicating higher patient mortality in younger age groups and lower in older groups. The reported pattern is not assumed to be related to implant treatment per se, but is assumed to reflect the variation in general health of a selected subgroup of treated implant patients compared to the reference population in different age groups. Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate if edentulism is associated with all-cause mortality. The aims were to analyze the association between age, socioeconomic factors, and mortality in edentulous patients treated with either removable dentures or implant-supported prostheses. Methods. All patients who became edentulous according to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (SSIA) between 2009 and 2013 (N = 8463) were analyzed regarding prosthetic treatment, age, gender, and socioeconomic status. The patients were divided into two groups, depending on whether they were treated with dental implants (implant group; IG) or with conventional removable dentures (denture group; DG). Data on mortality for all included individuals were obtained from the Swedish National Cause of Death Register and compared to a reference population. Cumulative survival rates were calculated, and a multivariable regression analysis for the included variables was performed. Results. Between 2009 and 2018, 2192 of the patients (25.9%) were treated with implant-supported dental prostheses (IG) and 6271 patients (74.1%) were treated with removable dentures without support of dental implants (DG). Altogether 2526 patients (30%) died until December 31, 2019, and the overall mortality was significantly higher for the DG compared to the IG during follow-up (p < 0.001). Younger edentulous patients (≤59 years) presented a higher mortality than the reference population, while implant patients over 79 years of age demonstrated a lower mortality. The final results from the multivariable logistic analysis showed that lower equalized disposable income (EDI) and the choice of conventional removable dentures are the most important factors for increased patient mortality (p < 0.001). Conclusions. Edentulous patients have an overall higher mortality compared to a reference population. Low socioeconomic status increases all-cause mortality. Individuals treated with dental implants show statistically significant lower 10-year mortality compared to patients treated with conventional removable dentures, regardless of socioeconomic status. Background: The reported prevalence of depression among individuals with psoriasis varies substantially, and the effect of gender on depression distribution has revealed conflicting results. In addition, using medication to identify cases is uncommon. Objective: To study the prevalence of pharmacologically treated depression among individuals with and without psoriasis in a Swedish population using ICD-10 codes and data from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register. Methods: A retrospective case-control population-based study was performed including all living individuals (age ≥18 years) in Region Jönköping, southern Sweden (n = 273,536). ICD-10 codes for the diagnosis of psoriasis (L40.*) and depression (F32.* and F33.*), and data on pharmacological treatment from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register, were extracted from electronic medical records between April 9, 2008 and January 1, 2016. The extraction date was January 1, 2016. Results: The risk of pharmacologically treated depression was increased in individuals with psoriasis (age- and sex-adjusted OR 1.55; CI 1.43–1.68); 21.1% of women with psoriasis received pharmacological treatment for depression during the study period compared to 14.2% in the control population. Prevalence figures for depression were significantly higher in women with psoriasis compared to men. The risk of suffering from depression was highest among male and female patients with psoriasis under the age of 31 years. Conclusions: Depression is common among patients with psoriasis. The results of the current study underline the need for dermatologists to adopt a holistic approach, looking beyond the skin, when handling patients with psoriasis in every-day clinical practice. Most of the carbon accumulated into peatlands is derived from Sphagnum mosses. During peatland development, the relative share of vascular plants and Sphagnum mosses in the plant community changes, which impacts ecosystem functions. Little is known on the successional development of functional plant traits or functional diversity in peatlands, although this could be a key for understanding the mechanisms behind peatland resistance to climate change. Here we aim to assess how functionality of successive plant communities change along the autogenic peatland development and the associated environmental gradients, namely peat thickness and pH, and to determine whether trait trade‐offs during peatland succession are analogous between vascular plant and moss communities.We collected plant community and trait data on successional peatland gradients from post‐glacial rebound areas in coastal Finland, Sweden and Russia, altogether from 47 peatlands. This allowed us to analyse the changes in community‐weighted mean trait values and functional diversity (diversity of traits) during peatland development.Our results show comparative trait trade‐offs from acquisitive species to conservative species in both vascular plant and Sphagnum moss communities during peatland development. However, mosses had higher resistance to environmental change than vascular plant communities. This was seen in the larger proportion of intraspecific trait variation than species turnover in moss traits, while the proportions were opposite for vascular plants. Similarly, the functional diversity of Sphagnum communities increased during the peatland development, while the opposite occurred for vascular plants. Most of the measured traits showed a phylogenetic signal. More so, the species common to old successional stages, namely Ericacae and Sphagna from subgroup Acutifolia were detected as most similar to their phylogenetic neighbours.Synthesis. During peatland development, vegetation succession leads to the dominance of conservative plant species accustomed to high stress. At the same time, the autogenic succession and ecological engineering of Sphagna leads to higher functional diversity and intraspecific variability, which together indicate higher resistance towards environmental perturbations. The aim was to describe food intake over time in children and adolescents, with respect to age and gender. The present study was a repeated cross-sectional study using self-reported data from a health questionnaire. Data were collected from the School Health Services in south-east Sweden from 44 297 students, 10, 13–14 and 16 years of age, 48 % girls and 52 % boys from 2009/2010 to 2015/2016. Reported intakes for eight foods were analysed in relation to the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations. Seventeen per cent of the students reported an intake in line with the recommendations for at least six of the eight foods fish, vegetables, fruit, mealtime beverages, juice/chocolate drinks, sugar-sweetened beverages, sweets/snacks and pastries. Intake of at least two fruits a day was the recommendation that was followed by the lowest proportion of students (30 %), and this result was stable over the study period. There was a gradual increase over time in the proportion of students who reported an intake in line with the recommendations. Younger students compared to older students, as well as girls compared to boys, reported intakes in line with the recommendations to a statistically significant larger extent. Few students reported intakes in line with the recommendations, although the quality of food intake seems to improve over time. The present results indicate a deterioration in reported food intake in the early years of adolescence. Finding methods to support all children and especially older adolescents to eat healthier, including eating more fruit, is of great importance to public health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The boreal biome exchanges large amounts of carbon (C) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) with the atmosphere and thus significantly affects the global climate. A managed boreal landscape consists of various sinks and sources of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC) across forests, mires, lakes, and streams. Due to the spatial heterogeneity, large uncertainties exist regarding the net landscape carbon balance (NLCB). In this study, we compiled terrestrial and aquatic fluxes of CO2, CH4, DOC, DIC, and harvested C obtained from tall‐tower eddy covariance measurements, stream monitoring, and remote sensing of biomass stocks for an entire boreal catchment (~68 km2) in Sweden to estimate the NLCB across the land–water–atmosphere continuum. Our results showed that this managed boreal forest landscape was a net C sink (NLCB = 39 g C m−2 year−1) with the landscape–atmosphere CO2 exchange being the dominant component, followed by the C export via harvest and streams. Accounting for the global warming potential of CH4, the landscape was a GHG sink of 237 g CO2‐eq m−2 year−1, thus providing a climate‐cooling effect. The CH4 flux contribution to the annual GHG budget increased from 0.6% during spring to 3.2% during winter. The aquatic C loss was most significant during spring contributing 8% to the annual NLCB. We further found that abiotic controls (e.g., air temperature and incoming radiation) regulated the temporal variability of the NLCB whereas land cover types (e.g., mire vs. forest) and management practices (e.g., clear‐cutting) determined their spatial variability. Our study advocates the need for integrating terrestrial and aquatic fluxes at the landscape scale based on tall‐tower eddy covariance measurements combined with biomass stock and stream monitoring to develop a holistic understanding of the NLCB of managed boreal forest landscapes and to better evaluate their potential for mitigating climate change. Objectives: This retrospective study investigated requests and indications for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in children and adolescents over a 3-year period at one oral and maxillofacial radiology department. Specific aims were to determine what technical settings were used, which caregivers write the referrals, and how often and for what reasons re-exposure was necessary.Materials and methods: Patients <19 years of age who had been referred to the department and undergone a CBCT scan during 2015-2017 were included in the study.Results: CBCT were made in 617 of the 3847 eligible referrals. The most common referral was from general practice dentists (GPD) (43%). Mean age of the patients was 12.5 years (range: 6-18). Nineteen different types of requests were identified. The most common request was assessment of an ectopic canine with a question about potential resorption of adjacent teeth (38.6%). Forty (6.5%) of the CBCT needed to be re-taken due to patient motion artefacts.Conclusions: The most common request and indication for CBCT examination of children and young adults were to assess an ectopic canine and determine the presence of resorption of adjacent teeth. Referrals from GPDs were the most frequent and the largest age group was the 11- to 15-year olds. The reason for re-exposures was motion artefacts. High scanning speed to reduce motion artefacts and a half rotation (180°) to reduce the radiation dose to the patient should be preferred. The need for continuous work with quality and systematic monitoring of radiographic procedures at any radiology department should be given high priority. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A managed boreal landscape usually comprises various potential CO 2 sinks and sources across forest stands of varying age classes, clear-cut areas, mires, and lakes. Due to this heterogeneity and complexity, large uncertainties exist regarding the net CO 2 balance at the landscape scale. In this study, we present the first estimate of the net CO 2 exchange over a managed boreal landscape (∼68 km2) in northern Sweden, based on tall tower eddy covariance measurements. Our results suggest that from March 1, 2016 to February 28, 2018, the heterogeneous landscape was a net CO 2 sink with a 2-year mean uptake of −87 ± 6 g C m−2 yr−1. Due to an earlier and warmer spring and sunnier autumn, the landscape was a stronger CO 2 sink during the first year (−122 ± 8 g C m−2) compared to the second year (−52 ± 9 g C m−2). Footprint analysis shows that 87% of the CO 2 flux measurements originated from forests, whereas mires, clear-cuts, lakes, and grassland contributed 11%, 1%, 0.7%, and 0.2%, respectively. Altogether, the CO 2 sink strength of the heterogeneous landscape was up to 38% lower compared to the sink strength of a mature stand surrounding the tower. Overall, this study suggests that the managed boreal landscape acted as a CO 2 sink and advocates tall tower eddy covariance measurements to improve regional carbon budget estimates. Aim and objectives: To validate the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for postoperative nausea assessments, and determine whether a central tendency, median, based on patients' self‐rated nausea is a clinically applicable daily measure to describe patients' nausea after major surgery. Background: Postoperative nausea causes major discomfort, risks for complications and prolonged hospital stays. The NRS is recommended for the assessment of pain but is little explored for assessing nausea. Design: A repeated measure design was carried out on patients who had undergone major surgery in three Swedish hospitals. Methods: Nonparametric statistical methods were used to analyse (a) associations between the NRS and a verbal scale (no, mild, moderate and severe) and (b) to analyse associations between Measure 1 (nausea scores postoperative Day 1) and Measure 2 (retrospective nausea scores at rest and during activity, postoperative Day 2). Reporting of this research adheres to the Strobe Guidelines. Results: The mean age of the 479 patients (44% women) in the sample was 65 years (range, 22–93 years). Self‐assessed nausea scores from the NRS and the verbal scale correlated well (rSpearman = 0.79). Correlation between nausea at rest and nausea during activity was rSpearman = 0.81. The calculated median scores (Measure 1) showed only moderate correlations with retrospective nausea scores (Measure 2); 4–9 ratings, rSpearman = 0.41; 6–9 ratings, rSpearman = 0.54. Conclusions: Numeric Rating Scale scores showed strong associations with a verbal scale; therefore, the NRS seems to be a valid tool to measure nausea intensity. The quality of daily summarised median nausea scores needs to be further explored before clinical use. Relevance to clinical practice: The use of the NRS in assessments of nausea in postoperative care will facilitate communication between patients and health care professionals regarding nausea intensity. Recent advancements in remote sensing of forests have demonstrated the capabilities of three-dimensional data acquired by airborne laser scanning (ALS) and, consequently, have become an integral part of enhanced forest inventories in Northern Europe. In Sweden, the first national laser scanning revolutionised forest management planning through low-cost production of large-scale and spatially explicit maps of forest attributes such as basal area, volume, and biomass, compared to the earlier practice based on field survey data. A second scanning at the national level was launched in 2019, and it provides conditions for the estimation of height growth and site index. Accurate and up-to-date information about site productivity is relevant for planning silvicultural treatments and for the prognosis of forest status and development over time. In this study, we explored the potential of bi-temporal ALS data and other auxiliary information to predict and map site productivity by site index according to site properties (SIS) of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in even-aged stands in Sweden. We linked ground survey data of SIS from more than 11,500 plots of the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI) to bi-temporal ALS data to predict and map site index using an area-based method and two regression modelling strategies: (1) a multiple linear regression (MLR) model with an ordinary least-squares parameter estimation method, and (2) a non-parametric random forests (RF) model optimised for hyper-parameter tuning. For model development, permanent plots were used, whereas the validation was done on the temporary plots of the Swedish NFI and an independent stand-level dataset. Species-specific models were developed, and the root mean square error (RMSE) metric was used to quantify the residual variability around model predictions. For both species, the MLR model gave precise and accurate estimates of SIS. The RMSE for SIS predictions was in the range of 1.96 – 2.11 m, and the relative RMSE was less than 10 % (7.68 – 9.49 %) of the reference mean value. Final predictors of site index include metrics of 90th percentile height and annual increment in the 95th percentile height, altitude, distance to coast, and soil moisture. Country-wide maps of SIS and the corresponding pixel-level prediction errors at a spatial resolution of 12.5 m grid cells were produced for the two species. Background: Health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) is impaired in patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) but has not yet been satisfactorily described. Objective: To study HR-QoL in patients with HAE by combining different HR-QoL instruments with disease activity assessment. Methods: All adults in the Swedish HAE registry were invited to take part in this questionnaire study, which used the generic HR-QoL instruments, EuroQol 5 Dimensions 5 Level (EQ-5D-5L) and the RAND Corporation Short Form 36 (RAND-36), the disease-specific Angioedema Quality of Life instrument (AE-QoL), the recently introduced Angioedema Activity Score (AAS) form, and questionnaires on sick leave and prophylactic medication. Results: Sixty-four of 133 adults (26 men, 38 women) between 18 and 91 years old responded. The most affected HR-QoL dimensions in the EQ-5D-5L were pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression; in the RAND-36, energy/fatigue, general health, pain; and, in the AE-QoL, fears/shame and fatigue/mood. Women had lower HR-QoL in the RAND-36 for general health and energy/fatigue (p < 0.05). Patients who reported any AAS of >0 had significantly impaired HR-QoL. There were significant associations (p < 0.05) between the AAS and EQ-5D-5L, between the AAS and all dimensions of the RAND-36 except physical function, and between the AAS and AE-QoL in all dimensions. Nine of 36 patients who reported sick leave during the previous 4 weeks had significantly impaired HR-QoL in all the instruments (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in HR-QoL in the patients with and the patients without prophylactic medication, except for the nutrition dimension of the AE-QoL (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Comprehensive information is obtained by combining different HR-QoL instruments. Pain, anxiety/depression, and fatigue/mood are important aspects of HAE but the AE-QoL disregards pain. The National Mapping Agency in Sweden has conducted an airborne laser scanning (ALS) campaign covering almost the entire country for the purpose of creating a new national Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The ALS data were collected between 2009 and 2015 using Leica, Optech, Riegl, and Trimble scanners and have a point density of 0.5–1.0 pulses/m 2 . A high resolution national raster database (12.5 m × 12.5 m cell size) with forest variables was produced by combining the ALS data with field data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI). Approximately 11500 NFI plots (10 meter radius) located on productive forest land, inventoried between 2009 and 2013, were used to create linear regression models relating selected forest variables, or transformations of the variables, to metrics derived from the ALS data. The resulting stand level relative RMSEs for predictions of stem volume, basal area, basal-area weighted mean tree height, and basal-area weighted mean stem diameter were in the ranges of 17.2–22.0%, 13.9–18.2%, 5.4–9.5%, and 8.7–13.1%, respectively. It was concluded that the predictions had an accuracy that were at least as good as data typically used in forest management planning. Above ground tree biomass was also included in the national raster database but not validated on a stand-level. An important part of the project was to make the raster database available to private forest owners, forest associations, forest companies, authorities, researchers, and the general public. It reports on the study of the negative and positive incidents in the public transport environment, conducted with participants from the Stockholm and its capital Sweden. The most negative incidents were found in the areas of station, ticketing and on-board, whereas maintenance of elevators, escalators and driving behavior were found as facilitating factors.

• We studied ditch cleaning (DC) effects on GHG fluxes in peatland forest clear-cuts. • Delayed herbaceous plant growth after DC reduced total production and respiration (R). • Impacts on nitrous oxide and methane fluxes after DC were minor. • Total GHG emissions from soil and ditches decreased by 44% after DC. • Reduced emissions were due to lower heterotrophic R likely caused by drought stress. Ditch cleaning (DC) is a well-established forestry practice across Fennoscandia to lower water table levels (WTL) and thereby facilitate the establishment of tree seedlings following clear-cutting. However, the implications from these activities for ecosystem-atmosphere greenhouse gas (GHG) exchanges are poorly understood at present. We assessed the initial DC effects on the GHG fluxes in a forest clear-cut on a drained fertile peatland in hemiboreal Sweden, by comparing chamber measurements of carbon dioxide (CO 2), methane (CH 4) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes from soil and ditches in DC and uncleaned (UC) areas over the first two post-harvest years. We also evaluated spatial effects by comparing fluxes at 4 m and 40 m from ditches. We found that 2 years after DC, mean (±standard error) WTL of −65 ± 2 cm was significantly lower in the DC area compared to −56 ± 2 cm in the UC area. We further observed lower gross primary production and ecosystem respiration in the first year after DC which coincided with delayed development of herbaceous ground vegetation. We also found higher CH 4 uptake but no difference in N 2 O fluxes after DC. Greater CH 4 uptake occurred at 4 m compared to 40 m away from both cleaned and uncleaned ditches. Model extrapolation suggests that total annual GHG emissions in the second year were reduced from 49.4 ± 17.0 t-CO 2 -eq-ha−1-year−1 in the UC area to 27.8 ± 10.3 t-CO 2 -eq-ha−1-year−1 in the DC area. A flux partitioning approach suggested that this was likely caused by decreased heterotrophic respiration, possibly because of enhanced soil dryness following DC during the dry meteorological conditions. CH 4 and N 2 O fluxes from clear-cut areas contributed <2 % to the total (soil, ditches) GHG budget. Similarly the area-weighted contributions by CO 2 and CH 4 emissions from both cleaned and uncleaned ditches were <2 %. Thus, our study highlights that DC may considerably alter the post-harvest GHG fluxes of drained peatland forests. • Forest-floor is an annual net CO 2 source, which increases with stand age. • Understory production is higher in pine than in spruce stands and declines with age. • Total forest-floor respiration is primarily regulated by its autotrophic components. • Heterotrophic soil respiration remains stable across the managed boreal landscape. • Tree biomass drives the landscape-scale variability of forest-floor CO 2 fluxes. The forest-floor represents an important interface for various carbon dioxide (CO 2) fluxes, however, our knowledge of their variability and drivers across a managed boreal forest landscape is limited. Here, we used a three-year (2016−2018) data set of biometric- and chamber-based flux measurements to investigate the net forest-floor CO 2 exchange (NE ff) and its component fluxes across 50 forest stands spanning different soil types, tree species, and age classes within a 68 km2 boreal catchment in Sweden. We found that the forest-floor acted as a net CO 2 source with the 10th–90th percentile (used hereafter for describing reported variations) ranging from 149 to 399 g C m−2 yr−1. Among the key landscape attributes, stand age strongly affected most NE ff component fluxes, whereas tree species and soil type effects were weak and absent, respectively. Specifically, forest-floor net CO 2 emissions increased with stand age due to declining understory gross and net primary production, ranging between 77–275 and 49–163 g C m−2 yr−1, respectively. Furthermore, we observed higher understory production rates in pine than in spruce stands. Across the 50 stands, the total forest-floor respiration ranged between 340 and 549 g C m−2 yr−1 and its spatial variation was primarily regulated by its autotrophic components, i.e., understory and tree root respiration, which displayed divergent increasing and decreasing age-related trends, respectively. Furthermore, heterotrophic soil respiration remained within a relatively narrow range (154–290 g C m−2 yr−1), possibly owing to compensating gradients in forest-floor properties. We further identified tree biomass as the major driver of the landscape-scale variations of CO 2 fluxes, likely attributable to modulating effects on forest-floor resource availability and growing conditions. This implies that tree growth responses to forest management and global change will be particularly important for regulating magnitudes and spatial variations of forest-floor CO 2 fluxes in boreal forests. Background: The purpose of this study was to draw conclusions from patient-reported experiences in two national surveys from Scandinavia with the intention of comparing treatment strategies and increasing our knowledge of factors that affect the experiences of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: A total of 2000 individuals in Sweden and 1300 in Norway were invited to complete postal surveys covering PD-related issues. Patient experiences of diagnostic procedures, symptom control, and follow-up in PD and the effects on symptom-related quality of life were collected. Pharmaceutical prescription data on anti-PD drugs and administrative data were collected from national registries. Results: The surveys were completed by 1553 (78%) of the Swedish cohort and 1244 (96%) of the Norwegian cohort. Only small differences were seen in disease duration and age distribution. Statistically as well as clinically significant differences in symptom control, diagnostic, and follow-up procedures, as well as in pharmacological treatment and impact on quality of life, were found between the national cohorts independent of disease duration. Conclusion: Information from separate national surveys has the potential to increase our knowledge of patient experiences in PD and can be used to compare, evaluate, educate, and guide health care staff and administrators in optimizing health care for patients with the disease. The k-nearest neighbours (kNN) methods have been used successfully in many countries for the production of spatially comprehensive raster databases of forest attributes, made from the combination of National Forest Inventory (NFI) and satellite data. In Sweden, country-wide kNN estimates of forest variables have been produced to represent the forest condition in the years 2000 and 2005 by using a combination of Système Pour l'Observation de la Terre 5 (SPOT 5) satellite data and field data from the Swedish NFI. The resulting products are wall-to-wall raster maps with estimates of total stem volume, stem volume per tree species, tree height and stand age and a 25 × 25 m2 pixel resolution. However, probability-based kNN stem volume estimates tend to have a suppressed variation range as large values are usually underestimated and small values are overestimated. One way to handle this problem is to calibrate the kNN stem volume estimates to the reference distribution of stem volume observations by histogram matching (HM) for a defined geographic area. In this study, we have tested HM for the calibration of kNN total stem volume raster maps to the reference distribution captured by a forest inventory (FI) from 106 stands in Strömsjöliden, in the north of Sweden. The available field FI data set comprises 1084 circular plots, divided into a reference data set and an evaluation data set of total stem volume observations. The reference data set was used for the creation of a cumulative frequency histogram of total stem volume and the evaluation data set was used to assess the accuracy of volume estimates, before and after HM. The HM adjusted the cumulative distribution of the kNN data set to the distribution of the reference observations and resulted in a distribution of kNN estimates of total stem volume, which corresponded closely to that of the evaluation data set. The results show that the variation range of the kNN stem volume estimates can be extended by HM both on the pixel and stand levels. The extension of the range of estimates towards the range provided by the field observations allows improvement of kNN volume estimation for use in forest management planning based on stand-level analysis, given that the reference stem volume distribution can be estimated accurately, for example, using field data from NFI. The aim of this study was to investigate to which degree the accuracy of vegetation classification could be improved by combining optical satellite data and airborne laser scanner (ALS) data, compared with using satellite data only. A Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) 5 scene and Leica ALS 50-II data from 2009, covering a test area in the mid-Sweden (latitude 60° 43' N, longitude 16° 43' E), were used in maximum likelihood and decision tree classifications. Training and validation data were obtained from the interpretation of digital aerial photo stereo models. Combination of SPOT and ALS data gave classification accuracies up to 72%, compared with 56% using only SPOT data. This indicates that integrating features from large area laser scanning may lead to significant improvements in satellite data-based vegetation classifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Adequate temporal trend analysis of mercury (Hg) in freshwater ecosystems is critical to evaluate if actions from the human society have affected Hg concentrations ([Hg]) in fresh water biota. This study examined temporal change in [Hg] in Northern pike (Esox lucius L.) in Swedish freshwater lakes between 1994 and 2006. To achieve this were lake-specific, multiple-linear-regression models used to estimate pike [Hg], including indicator variables representing time and fish weight and their interactions. This approach permitted estimation of the direction and magnitude of temporal changes in 25 lakes selected from the Swedish national database on Hg in freshwater biota. A significant increase was found in 36% of the studied lakes with an average increase in pike [Hg] of 3.7±6.7% per year that was found to be positively correlated with total organic carbon. For lakes with a significant temporal change the dataset was based on a mean of 30 fish, while for lakes with no temporal change it was based on a mean of 13 fish. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Forest edges have numerous implications for structure and function of forest ecosystems. Previous studies on edge quantity have used broad classifications. However, edge influence is driven by the contrast in vegetation structure between adjoining ecosystems, and thus we need detailed site-specific data to assess the role of edges in forests. We studied the variability of sharp edges in 28 boreal landscapes (4km×4km) across an 830km gradient throughout northern Sweden. Our objectives were: (1) to compare the length of natural and created edges, (2) to classify edges in detail by edge origin, maintenance and forest attributes, and (3) to examine relationships between length of edge and landscape variables. Data were collected using stereo-interpretation of high spatial resolution colour infrared aerial photographs, in combination with line intersect sampling and plots. The length of edge varied from 12 to 102mha−1 among landscapes, with an overall mean of 54mha−1. Created edges dominated most landscapes (mean 33mha−1) and had greater variability than natural edges (mean 21mha−1). Maintained edges (e.g. roads, agricultural land) were more abundant than regenerating edges caused by logging. Thirty percent of total edges adjoined narrow linear features. Seventy percent adjoined wider patches and showed high variability (35 classes). Overall, high-contrast edges towards mature forest dominated, i.e. ones that may experience strong edge influence. The amount of edge increased with percent of landscape affected by disturbance, and decreased with latitude and elevation. This study shows that edges are both abundant and highly variable in boreal forests and that forestry is the main driver behind edge creation. Detailed classification of edges based on site-specific forest and patch attributes may help to estimate edge influence at landscape level, and can guide experimental design for examining the impact of edges on structure and function of forest ecosystems. Lichen is a major forage resource for reindeer and may constitute up to 80% of a reindeer's winter diet. The reindeer grazing area in Sweden covers almost half of the country, with reindeer using mountainous areas in the summer and forested areas in the winter. Knowledge about the spatial distribution of ground lichens is important for both practical and decision-making purposes. Since the early 1980s, remote sensing research of lichen cover in northern environments has focused on reindeer grazing issues. The objective of this study was to use lichen information collected in the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI) as training data to classify optical satellite images into ground lichen cover classes. The study site was located within the reindeer husbandry area in northern Sweden and consisted of the common area between two contiguous Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT)-5 scenes and one Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) scene. Three classification methods were tested: Mahalanobis distance, maximum likelihood and spectral mixture analysis. Post-classification calibration was applied using a membership probability threshold in order to match the NFI-measured proportions of lichen coverage classes. The classification results were assessed using an independently collected field dataset (229 validation areas). The results demonstrated high classification accuracy of SPOT imagery for the classification of lichen-abundant and lichen-poor areas when using the Mahalanobis distance classifier (overall accuracy 84.3%, kappa = 0.68). The highest classification accuracy for Landsat was achieved using a maximum likelihood classification (overall accuracy 76.8%, kappa = 0.53). These results provided an initial indication of the utility of NFI data as training data in the process of mapping lichen classes over large areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluated the feasibility and quality of uncomplicated hypertension care based on telemedicine in a rural area of northern Sweden. The intervention subjects were 91 consecutive patients with primary hypertension. For comparison, 182 age- and sex-matched patients with hypertension were randomly selected from a similar health centre. The telemedicine equipment consisted of a video link between the physician and the patients, supported by a system for accessing medical data via the Internet. During a 21-month study period, telemedicine was used in 270 (91%) of the 297 consultations in the intervention group. All health personnel involved in the telemedicine treatment rated the method as feasible. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure improved in the two groups during the study period. In the intervention group, a higher proportion had their blood pressure within treatment goals (systolic blood pressure <140 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure ,90 mmHg) both at baseline and at follow-up than in the comparison group. An adjusted multivariate model (adjustment for sex, age, time between visits, change in number of drugs between first and last visit, blood pressure at first visit) showed that the intervention group had a higher probability (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.4-5.2) of reaching the target blood pressure levels than the reference group. Treatment of hypertension by means of telemedicine was quite feasible and at least as effective as face-to-face consultations with a physician. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To explore changes in sense of coherence (SOC) over a 10-year period in the general population in northern Sweden. Methods: Three cross-sectional surveys from 1994 (n=1802), 1999 (n=1698) and 2004 (n=1777), conducted within the northern Sweden MONICA Project, were compared. Participants answered questions about gender, age, experience of disease, perceived health, psychosocial factors and Antonovsky's SOC scale with 13 items. Results: A small, but significant, decrease in SOC medians and a shift of cumulative distributions towards slightly lower SOC values were seen both in the total study population and in its male and female subgroups between 1994 and 1999. No changes were seen between 1999 and 2004, with the exception of women between 25 and 44 years of age, who showed a continuous decrease. Conclusions; The present study shows that SOC at a population level in northern Sweden, within a 10-year span, is relatively stable, not withstanding minor changes. These small changes might be attributed to societal changes in Sweden during the 1990s and an increase in "minor" psychiatric complaints in the Swedish population as a whole during the same period. There has been a long-term decline in spring and fall numbers of Clethrionomys rufocanus in boreal Sweden in 1971–2005. Previous studies on permanent sampling plots in the centre of 2.5 × 2.5 km landscapes suggested that habitat fragmentation (sensu destruction) could have contributed to the decline. Therefore, we tested these findings in a field study and compared trapping results on the central sampling plots of landscapes with a low degree of fragmentation (LDF) and of “hot spot” type with trapping results in managed forest landscapes with a high degree of fragmentation (HDF). We predicted that C. rufocanus would be more common on the LDF plots. We used our permanent plots supplemented with a new sample of plots, mainly of the rare LDF type, inside or just outside the long-term study area. Very few voles were trapped on both plot types, and no difference was found. However, a subsequent pilot study with trapping in a national park with large areas of pristine, unfragmented forest yielded more voles than in the managed, more fragmented, areas. Consequently, the initial field study data and some other recent data were also re-analysed from a “local patch quality” perspective. This alternative approach revealed the positive importance of large focal patches of forest >60 years old and their content of old-growth (pine) forest (>100 years). Interestingly, at the landscape level, the frequency distribution of patches of forest >60 years old, old-growth (>100 years), and especially of old-growth pine forest (>100 years), relative to the properties of plots with C. rufocanus, suggested that there are few forest patches left that are suitable for C. rufocanus. Our current results suggest that habitat fragmentation cannot be excluded as a contributing cause to the long-term decline of C. rufocanus in boreal Sweden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regulating power is needed to compensate for unplanned deviations from production and consumption plans. The transmission system operator (TSO) in each country is responsible for keeping the electric system balanced, and activates regulation if needed to keep the frequency in the network stable. The need for regulations will likely grow when more wind power is built in the power system, as it is difficult to forecast wind power production and make accurate production plans. By using data on wind power prognosis errors from the West Danish power system, a need for regulating power in the Swedish system is predicted, with 4000 MW of new wind power installed. An attempt is made to forecast pricing on regulating power in Sweden based on the need for regulating power along with other aspects. The paper elaborates on the possible correlations between the electricity prices in two neighbouring regions. The question is of interest since a large part of the public and some politicians feel that the European CO2 emission trading system ought not to affect the hydro- and nuclear-based Swedish electricity market. The analysis builds upon empirical observations and simple econometric testing. Our results highlight some of connections between the Swedish and German electricity prices and we qualitatively discuss these results. This article reviews the research and application of airborne laser scanning for forest inventory in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The first experiments with scanning lasers for forest inventory were conducted in 1991 using the FLASH system, a full-waveform experimental laser developed by the Swedish Defence Research Institute. In Finland at the same time, the HUTSCAT profiling radar provided experiences that inspired the following laser scanning research. Since 1995, data from commercially operated time-of-flight scanning lasers (e.g. TopEye, Optech ALTM and TopoSys) have been used. Especially in Norway, the main objective has been to develop methods that are directly suited for practical forest inventory at the stand level. Mean tree height, stand volume and basal area have been the most important forest mensurational parameters of interest. Laser data have been related to field training plot measurements using regression techniques, and these relationships have been used to predict corresponding properties in all forest stands in an area. Experiences from Finland, Norway and Sweden show that retrieval of stem volume and mean tree height on a stand level from laser scanner data performs as well as, or better than, photogrammetric methods, and better than other remote sensing methods. Laser scanning is, therefore, now beginning to be used operationally in large-area forest inventories. In Finland and Sweden, research has also been done into the identification of single trees and estimation of single-tree properties, such as tree position, tree height, crown width, stem diameter and tree species. In coniferous stands, up to 90% of the trees represented by stem volume have been correctly identified from canopy height models, and the tree height has been estimated with a root mean square error of around 0.6 m. It is significantly more difficult to identify suppressed trees than dominant trees. Spruce and pine have been discriminated on a single-tree level with 95% accuracy. About 55% of the land area in Sweden is covered by forest. Presently, there is no uniform and geographically explicit description of the forest cover for Sweden. Independent data sources already existing are satellite data from Landsat TM and SPOT HRV, map masks and forest inventory plots. Together, they provide the possibility of computing estimates of forest variables such as stem volume and stand age. The accuracy for these estimations will be low on the pixel level, but higher on a stand level. This type of raster-based forest data is useful for authorities when planning how timber resources should be utilized or for monitoring purposes. The production line that was developed to create a countrywide database of forest variable estimates in a cost-efficient way is described. Accuracy of forest variable estimates for an area in southwestern Sweden was assessed at stand level. The purpose of this paper is, first, to describe the organization, sampling procedures, availability of samples/database, ethical considerations, and quality control program of the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study Cohort. Secondly, some examples are given of studies on cardiovascular disease and diabetes with a focus on the biomarker programme. Near-infrared (NIR) spectral data were obtained from 165 surface sediment samples from a northern Swedish humic, mesotrophic lake (0.5 km2). The NIR spectra, together with data on water depth and loss-on-ignition (LOI), allow an evaluation of the source of spatial variance in sediment characteristics. The results show that water depth and organic matter (LOI) account for 20 and 16%, respectively, of the variance in the NIR-absorbance data. More importantly, the spatial variance in the spectral data suggest that NIR analysis of lake sediments mainly reflect sediment properties that cannot simply be explained by depth or amount of organic matter. The influence of inlets and land-use (e.g. clear-cutting) on sediment characteristics was more pronounced in the spectral data than would be expected from the LOI data. This is explained by differences in the chemical composition of the organic matter, as revealed by NIR spectroscopy, rather than in the amount of organic matter or depth-related sedimentation properties (e.g. particle size or density). This initial attempt to characterise sediment properties using NIR suggests that NIR analysis might become a valuable complementary tool to traditional sediment characterisation. Peatlands play an important role in the global carbon cycle as they contain a large soil carbon stock. However, current climate change could potentially shift peatlands from being carbon sinks to carbon sources. Remote sensing methods provide an opportunity to monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange in peatland ecosystems at large scales under these changing conditions. In this study, we developed empirical models of the CO2 balance (net ecosystem exchange, NEE), gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (ER) that could be used for upscaling CO2 fluxes with remotely sensed data. Two to three years of eddy covariance (EC) data from five peatlands in Sweden and Finland were compared to modelled NEE, GPP and ER based on vegetation indices from 10 m resolution Sentinel-2 MSI and land surface temperature from 1 km resolution MODIS data. To ensure a precise match between the EC data and the Sentinel-2 observations, a footprint model was applied to derive footprint-weighted daily means of the vegetation indices. Average model parameters for all sites were acquired with a leave-one-out-cross-validation procedure. Both the GPP and the ER models gave high agreement with the EC-derived fluxes (R2 = 0.70 and 0.56, NRMSE = 14% and 15%, respectively). The performance of the NEE model was weaker (average R2 = 0.36 and NRMSE = 13%). Our findings demonstrate that using optical and thermal satellite sensor data is a feasible method for upscaling the GPP and ER of northern boreal peatlands, although further studies are needed to investigate the sources of the unexplained spatial and temporal variation of the CO2 fluxes. We investigated the influence of sulfate (SO 4 2−) deposition and concentrations on the net formation and solubility of methylmercury (MeHg) in peat soils. We used data from a natural sulfate deposition gradient running 300 km across southern Sweden to test the hypothesis posed by results from an experimental field study in northern Sweden: that increased loading of SO 4 2− both increases net MeHg formation and redistributes methylmercury (MeHg) from the peat soil to its porewater. Sulfur concentrations in peat soils correlated positively with MeHg concentrations in peat porewater, along the deposition gradient similar to the response to added SO 4 2− in the experimental field study. The combined results from the experimental field study and deposition gradient accentuate the multiple, distinct and interacting roles of SO 4 2− deposition in the formation and redistribution of MeHg in the environment. :Aims: The diagnosis and management of vitamin B[sub 12] deficiency varies between countries and within countries. The aim of the study was to map current attitudes and values behind clinical decision-making in Swedish primary health care, which has a unique B[sub 12] tradition: two patients out of three are treated with oral high-dose cyanocobalamin. Most patients with B[sub 12]-associated problems are managed in primary health care by general practitioners (GPs). :Methods: The study was designed to elucidate possible opinion shifts among GPs during the period 1996-1998. GPs (n~499), stratified and randomized, received a questionnaire with 24 statements on B[sub 12]-associated clinical and laboratory problems, to be evaluated by a visuo-analogue scale. :Results: The majority of GPs in primary health care in Sweden accepted homocysteine and methylmalonic acid (MMA) as markers for functional deficiency of vitamin B[sub 12]. The evaluation of classical markers of B[sub 12] deficiency was wary and balanced. There was a consensus of the need for B[sub 12 ]therapy to risk groups such as patients with atrophic gastritis or previous gastric surgery. The answers also appeared to reflect an improvement of professional knowledge and competence concerning B[sub 12]-associated problems among Swedish GPs between 1996 and 1998. :Conclusions: The overriding conclusion was that B[sub 12]-associated opinions of Swedish GPs were stable within the period studied, with marginal improvements of knowledge and competence. Drainage and peat harvesting may induce considerable changes in the fluxes to the atmosphere of the greenhouse gases CH4 and CO2 in peatlands. In this study, fluxes of CH4 and CO2 were measured with the closed chamber method in 6Swedish peatlands that are being mined. Fluxes of CH4 were much higher from ditches than from mining 'strips', i.e. emissions from ditches dominated in most peatlands. The total CH4 emission during the growing season (0.41 to 4.5 g CH4 m-2 yr-1) was similar to emissions from virgin peatlands. Emissions from ditches can probably be kept low by keeping the ditches clear from vegetation. Like CH4, CO2 wasreleased to the atmosphere from both ditches and strips in most peatlands. The total emission during the growing season (0.23 to 1.0 kg CO2 m-2 yr-1) was strongly dominated by the strips. Compared to the total peat yield during mining these CO2 emission rates imply that on average ca 6% of the peat carbon is lost by microbial decomposition in the mire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
