Abstract

The article discusses the resettlement of survivors from the Jewish Holocaust in Alabama from the mid 1940s through the early 1950s. The article relies heavily on primary source material, including from the aid organization the United Service for New Americans (USNA) and the non-profit organization the United Jewish Fund. The role that the Alabama Jewish communities played in assisting in the resettlement of Jews displaced from the Jewish Holocaust is discussed.

Abstract

The article explores the religious beliefs of Southern diarist Elizabeth Rhodes and the history of the U.S. Civil War in Alabama. The author reflects on the role of religion in the daily life of women and social expectations such as submission and sacrifice. The social identity of Rhodes is discussed in terms of race, class, gender, and family relationships. The impact of the war is analyzed in terms of its historical significance for Rhodes, her support for the southern cause, and her Christianity as a source of comfort.

Abstract

Three palynological cores from the coastal plain of Georgia and Alabama were analyzed for paleobotanical remains. Results show that the Indians of southeastern North America increased forest fires used in hunting as a response to the demand for deer hides during the early eighteenth century. Palynological data are consistent with known anthropogenic changes in the region. Charcoal abundance increased significantly between A.D. 1715 and 1770, which is the period of the most intensive hunting by the Indians. This study shows that forest fires from hunting had a significant and measurable effect on the evolution of the biophysical environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
