The purpose of the current study is to demonstrate a significant suppressor effect among coping strategies on resilience. Two different samples were used to replicate the suppressor effect. Participants in the first example were 391 adolescents (middle school students) in Korea, and participants in the second example were 282 young adults (university students) in Korea. Both samples completed self-report measures of coping strategies and resilience. To verify the significance of the suppressor effect, structural equation modeling and bootstrapping procedures were used. The results showed that the suppressor effect was replicable in both samples. Also, the results of both examples revealed significant suppressor effects, with passive coping increasing the relationship between active coping and resilience. This study offers recommendations for understanding relationships among coping strategies within the context of suppressor effects.

Objectives: The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency promotes vaccination by regularly providing information on its benefits for reducing the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study aimed to analyze the number of averted severe COVID-19 cases and COVID-19-related deaths by age group and quantify the impact of Republic of Korea's nationwide vaccination campaign. Methods: We analyzed an integrated database from the beginning of the vaccination campaign on February 26, 2021 to October 15, 2022. We estimated the cumulative number of severe cases and COVID-19-related deaths over time by comparing observed and estimated cases among unvaccinated and vaccinated groups using statistical modeling. We compared daily age-adjusted rates of severe cases and deaths in the unvaccinated group to those in the vaccinated group and calculated the susceptible population and proportion of vaccinated people by age. Results: There were 23,793 severe cases and 25,441 deaths related to COVID-19. We estimated that 119,579 (95% confidence interval [CI], 118,901-120,257) severe COVID-19 cases and 137,636 (95% CI, 136,909-138,363) COVID-19-related deaths would have occurred if vaccination had not been performed. Therefore, 95,786 (95% CI, 94,659-96,913) severe cases and 112,195 (95% CI, 110,870-113,520) deaths were prevented as a result of the vaccination campaign. Conclusion: We found that, if the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign had not been implemented, the number of severe cases and deaths would have been at least 4 times higher. Global rates of attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have risen. In Korea, ADHD is associated with functional impairments and comorbidity with other psychological disorders. This study examined the correlates of ADHD in a psychiatric sample of Korean adolescents on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory‐Adolescent‐Restructured Form (MMPI‐A‐RF). In a clinical sample of 247 adolescents, MMPI‐A‐RF scores from 46 patients diagnosed with ADHD were compared to the remainder of the clinical sample and to the Korean MMPI‐A‐RF norms. Results demonstrated significantly different scores for the ADHD group on scales indicating externalizing concerns and behavior dysfunction compared with the clinical group with other disorders and to a normative sample. Notable differences were also observed between clinical groups on scales reflecting interpersonal functioning. Relative risk ratio analyses demonstrated that an MMPI‐A‐RF T‐score of 55 was generally most effective for predicting risk for an ADHD diagnosis in the clinical sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose This study sought to examine perceived risk and concerns for breast cancer according to awareness of breast density and states thereof among Korea women and to identify the impact of such awareness on screening intentions. Materials and Methods This study was based on the 2017 Korean National Cancer Screening Survey of a nationally representative and randomly selected sample of Koreans. Ordinal logistic regression was conducted to examine associations for awareness of and knowledge on breast density in relation to psychological factors. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate significant factors associated with intentions to undergo breast cancer screening. Results Among a total of 1,609 women aged 40-69 years, 62.0% were unaware of their breast density, and only 29.7% had good breast density knowledge. Awareness of one's breast density and knowledge about breast density were positively associated with perceptions of absolute and comparative risk and cancer worry. Women aware of their breast density (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.35 for women aware of having a non-dense breast; aOR, 4.17 for women aware of having a dense breast) and women with a good level of breast density knowledge (aOR, 1.65) were more likely to undergo future breast cancer screening. Conclusion Breast density awareness and knowledge showed positive associations with psychological factors and breast cancer screening intentions. However, the majority of Korean women were not aware of their breast density status and demonstrated poor knowledge about breast density. This study examines the ways in which collaboration in audiovisual translation is approached and portrayed by different parties involved in the transnational distribution and consumption of cultural products. It considers the case of the Korean translation of Spy, an American action comedy spy film that was praised by many critics for its feminist message. Prior to its release in Korea, the film became widely known for its translators, which included a high-profile comedian, comedy scriptwriters, and a professional translator. Drawing on the concepts of 'framing' and 'voice', the present study shows how collaborative translation was used as a tool by the distributor to promote and market the film and to extend its commercial reach. The paper also argues that today's viewers are not passive audiences. Empowered by social networks and digital devices, they actively share reviews and engage in discussions concerning translation method and quality, translators' identities, and translation effects. Linking collaborative translation to what they see as the 'flattening' of a feminist voice and the insertion in the film of humor that reinforces unequal gender relations, many audiences actively resisted the distributor's portrayal of collaborative translation as an optimal way to translate the film. The findings have implications for enhancing our understanding of collaborative translation work, translation of humor within the Korean cultural context, and perceptions on the connection between translation quality and collaborative translation. Freeze-dried 3rdday of 5th instar silkworm powder (FDSP) has been produced and consumed as functional food ingredient in Korea. Generally, FDSP is distributed in the dehumidification state. In this study, the effect of humid condition (30%, 50%, 70%, and 90% RH) on the quality characteristics of FDSP was examined. The color of FDSP, greenish yellow, becomes dark with the change of redness and yellowness. When FDSP is exposed for 4 h at 90% RH, the lightness was changed from 56 to 51, redness from -0.8 to 3.7, and yellowness from 26.5 to 21.6. The proximate composition of FDSP was not significantly changed except 90% RH condition. At that condition, moisture content (5.7%) was increased to 26.8% and crude fat (11.3%) decreased to 1.9% (3 wk 90% RH). Mineral content change during storage can be classified to 3 types; sulfur rapidly decreased, potassium mostly stable with some decreased with humidity, and sodium increased with high humid condition. AbstractFree radicals induced by cigarette smoking have been strongly linked to increased oxidative stress in vivo, contributing to the pathobiology of various diseases. This study was performed to investigate the effects of Haematococcusastaxanthin (ASX), which has been known to be a potent antioxidant, on oxidative stress in smokers. Thirty-nine heavy smokers (≥20 cigarettes/day) and 39 non-smokers were enrolled in this study. Smokers were randomly divided into three dosage groups to receive ASX at doses of 5, 20, or 40 mg (n=13, each) once daily for 3 weeks. Oxidative stress biomarkers such as malondialdehyde, isoprostane, superoxide dismutase, and total antioxidant capacity, and ASX levels in plasma were measured at baseline and after 1, 2, and 3 weeks of treatment. Compared with baseline, the plasma malondialdehyde and isoprostane levels decreased, whereas superoxide dismutase level and total antioxidant capacity increased in all ASX intervention groups over the 3-week period. In particular, isoprostane levels showed a significant dose-dependent decrease after ASX intake. The results suggest that ASX supplementation might prevent oxidative damage in smokers by suppressing lipid peroxidation and stimulating the activity of the antioxidant system in smokers. Abstract: Ginsenoside Rh1 has been reported to possess antiallergic and anti-inflammatory activities, but its effects on monocytes remain to be determined. Herein, we investigated the effects of Rh1 on the expression of MCP-1 and CCR2, activation of MAPK signaling, and chemotaxis of monocytes. Treatment of Rh1 decreased the levels of MCP-1 and CCR2 and the expression of VLA5 and activated β1 integrin on the cell surface, and attenuated the phosphorylation of MAPKs. Based on these results, the inhibitory effects of Rh1 on monocyte function should be regarded as a promising new anti-inflammatory response with a potential therapeutic role against inflammation-dependent diseases. Background/Aims: We designed this study to examine subsyndromes in Korean patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Methods: Initial participants were 778 AD patients recruited from the Clinical Research Center for Dementia of South Korea and assessed via the Korean Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Those with ≥1 neuropsychiatric symptom were randomly divided into groups. Principal axis factoring with oblimin rotation was used to analyze group 1 inventory results, and maximum likelihood estimation extraction with Bollen-Stine bootstrapping was used for group 2. Results: The results of the EFA showed the presence of 4 subsyndromes: hyperactivity, affect, psychosis and apathy/vegetative symptom. The CFA results indicated this model was the best-fitting model for explaining these subsyndromes. Conclusion: Our model showed the best fit and identified 4 subsyndromes. Background: To date, shortened versions of the Hypomania Checklist-32 (HCL-32) were proposed to overcome the limitation of a lengthy format; however, a cross-validation study is currently needed to identify which shorter version may function optimally in a clinical sample.Methods: In a Korean patient sample with bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) (BD-I n = 84, BD = II n = 145, MDD n = 285), we examined the reliability and screening property of three shorter versions of the HCL (HCL-20, -16, -8) in comparison with the full HCL-32. Diagnosis was confirmed by the structured clinical interview (SCID-I).Results: All three shortened HCLs demonstrated a fair screening ability (Area Under the Curve = .72~.74) to discriminate BD patients from MDD patients, which was comparable to that of the HCL-32. When sensitivity and specificity were considered, the HCL-20 showed relatively superior performance among the shortened versions.Limitations: The shorter versions were not administered in a 'stand-alone' manner.Conclusions: This is the first cross-validation study in a large clinical sample with an increased statistical power to compare the screening property of the shortened HCLs. Objective: This study sought to identify seasonal and environmental determinants of scrub typhus, murine typhus, and leptospirosis in small mammals trapped at Dagmar North training area, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Methods: Small mammals received titer assays to the aforementioned diseases. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine whether associations existed between risk of small-mammal infection and independent variables such as season of capture, habitat, small-mammal species, and sex. Results: Murine typhus was not detected among the animals assayed. Risk of scrub typhus infection was associated with season, habitat, and small-mammal species. Risk of leptospirosis infection was associated with season and habitat. Conclusions: These findings indicate determinants of infection exist for scrub typhus and leptospirosis at this training site. This information can be used for developing appropriate preventive medicine plans and coordinating troop activity during periods of reduced exposure decreasing the likelihood of disease transmission to humans.
