In this paper, we present a review of several selected talks presented at the CTTACC conference (Cellular Therapies in Trauma and Critical Care) held in Scottsdale, AZ in May 2023. This conference review highlights the potential for cellular therapies to "reset" the dysregulated immune response and restore physiologic functions to normal. Improvements in medical care systems and technology have increasingly saved lives after major traumatic events. However, many of these patients have complicated post-traumatic sequelae, ranging from short-term multi-organ failure to chronic critical illness. Patients with chronic critical illness have been found to have dysregulated immune responses. These abnormal and harmful immune responses persist for years after the initial insult and can potentially be mitigated by treatment with cellular therapies. The sessions emphasized the need for more research and clinical trials with cellular therapies for the treatment of a multitude of chronic illnesses: post-trauma, radiation injury, COVID-19, burns, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other chronic infections. Objective: This large, retrospective, multicenter study examines the Mayo Clinic experience with temporal artery biopsies over an 11-year period to help form guidelines that would lead to optimal performance of the technique. Methods: Pathology records were identified from all patients at all three Mayo Clinic sites (Rochester, MN; Jacksonville, FL; and Scottsdale, AZ) who underwent temporal artery surgery over an 11-year period, from January 1, 1994, to December 31, 2004. From each report, we extracted demographic information, the length of the temporal artery removed in the biopsy from each side, and the pathologic findings in each specimen. We used logistic regression to assess whether biopsy positivity may be associated with the following factors: biopsy length, age, sex, type (unilateral vs. bilateral), and year of study. Results: Our data set included 3817 temporal artery biopsies performed on 2539 patients at Mayo Clinic. Overall, 681 patients (27%) had a positive biopsy on at least one side. Biopsy length was uniformly noted to have no significant effect on biopsy positivity. Of the 603 patients with a bilateral biopsy, 43 (7%) had a negative initial biopsy followed by a positive result on the contralateral side. Conclusion: Our results support that one can recommend any length of biopsy, within the range our study, without affecting the rate of positivity. Furthermore, we conclude that if a unilateral biopsy is negative on frozen section, then we recommend a second biopsy on the contralateral side to avoid possible missed diagnoses. Key Points • Our paper is a large retrospective study over all 3 Mayo Clinic campuses investigating the association between temporal artery biopsy length and the positivity rate of biopsies. • We also determined the value of performing bilateral biopsies in which the first biopsy was negative on frozen section. • We believe the strength of our study is having one of the largest sample sizes of biopsies in the literature to date including 3817 biopsies. • The sum of our research supports that we found biopsy positivity is not a function of length and, second, bilateral biopsies diagnose up to 7% of disease not otherwise picked up by unilateral approaches. Peer-reviewed abstracts presented at the 2019 Society of Skeletal Radiology (SSR) Annual Meeting were reviewed following oral presentation. Topics felt to be of potential interest to musculoskeletal (MSK) investigators and practicing clinicians are highlighted in this compilation and analysis of the meeting. The 10th annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) was held February 19-21, 2004, in Scottsdale, Arizona. With nearly 850 registered attendees, this year's meeting was the largest to date. The 3-day scientific program included William Corrigall as the keynote speaker, three theme lecturers, one award address, 10 symposia, nine oral paper sessions, and four poster sessions that contained over 100 presentations per session. The meeting content emphasized three major areas of SRNT's scientific focus: Preclinical, clinical, and epidemiology/public health research in the nicotine and tobacco field. The meeting provided many opportunities to interact with and learn from colleagues engaged in broad topics within nicotine and tobacco research. Additional events included two preconference meetings, an opening reception, several evening workshops, scientific and travel awards, and a members' meeting. The scientific excellence and innovation presented at this year's meeting represented SRNT's growth and continued contributions to advancing our understanding of nicotine addiction and tobacco use. In this time of ongoing health care changes, consumers need to become better informed to actively participate in their health care decisions. As a result, hospital libraries are being challenged to address this need. Scottsdale Healthcare's Health Sciences Libraries have responded to this challenge by establishing a Health Information Center at the premiere shopping mall in the area. Implementing a Health Information Center at a mall is a unique way to bring medical information to the community. Introduction: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) malfunction rates are as high as 40% in the first year with posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) patients having the highest proximal occlusion risk. Debris, protein, and cellular ingrowth most commonly obstruct the proximal ventricular catheter and/or valve. Historically, no preventative methods have demonstrated efficacy. We present a technical note and case series describing the use of a retrograde proximal flushing device and prophylactic flushing protocol to maintain ventricular catheter patency and reduce proximal shunt occlusions. Methods: We present our 2.8–4-year follow-up data on the first 9 pediatric cases of ReFlow (Anuncia Inc, Scottsdale, AZ) device implantation combined with routine prophylactic flushing. Rationale for device implantation, patient selection, surgical procedure details, postoperative follow-up, and prophylactic flushing protocol are discussed as well as pre- and postimplantation ventricular catheter obstruction rates. We include a technical note on the device setup and prophylactic flushing protocol. Results: Patient average age was 5.6 years and all patients had PHH. Minimal follow-up was 2.8 years (range 2.8–4 years). Prophylactic flushing was initiated between 2 and 14 days after ReFlow implantation and has continued as of the last follow-up. In 7 patients, ReFlow implantation occurred during the revision of an existing shunt and in two, implantation was coincident with initial VPS placement. In the 2 years preceding ReFlow and prophylactic flushing, 14 proximal shunt failures occurred in the 7 patients with existing VPS. This was reduced to only one proximal shunt failure in all 9 patients during the full follow-up period after ReFlow and prophylactic flushing. Conclusion: Pediatric VPS placement carries high rates of proximal catheter occlusion, often leading to emergency surgery, morbidity, or even death. The ReFlow device along with routine prophylactic flushing may reduce proximal obstruction and need for revision surgery. Higher patient numbers and longer follow-up periods are necessary to further elucidate the safety and effect of such a device on longer term shunt failures and revision surgery. Dermatology residency continues to be one of the most competitive specialties, with a match rate of 84.7% in 2019. We surveyed 475 dermatology applicants who applied to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, during the 2018-2019 application cycle and 629 dermatology applicants who applied to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale; Rochester, Minnesota; and Jacksonville, Florida, during the 2019-2020 application cycle. The initial survey obtained application and demographic information. The follow-up survey obtained match data. The initial 2019 and 2020 surveys were completed by 149 and 142 dermatology applicants, respectively, and 112 and 124 applicants completed the respective follow-up surveys. Our survey finds that factors associated with matching included a higher US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 score, having a home dermatology program, and a higher number of interviews offered and attended. This column is the first of two that features summaries of the papers presented by nursing theory-guided practice experts at the American Academy of Nursing meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, in November 2005. Their presentations inform us about the diversity of nursing processes that facilitate human health and define the discipline. In this column, the focus is on the Roy adaptation model, King's transaction process and concept of goal attainment, and the concept of trust as a pattern manifestation of Rogers' human-environment process. As complex systems, urban stormwater networks (USNs) may reveal emergent features (e.g., scaling) and sudden changes in behavior, which can lead to unanticipated impacts. We explored this through the USN properties of connectivity, heterogeneity, and scaling, which were quantified using outputs from a hydrological model and network dispersion mechanisms. The network properties were determined retrospectively in space and time by reconstructing the contemporary history of urban development and stormwater infrastructure in an arid, urban catchment in the City of Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. We found that the relative importance to USN functioning of both network structure (geomorphology) and dynamics (spatial celerity pattern) changed with the spatial scale, with network geomorphology being more dominant at larger spatial scales. The importance of network geomorphology suggested that the structure of the USN itself could potentially serve as a stormwater control measure, for example, by enhancing flow dispersion. The temporal evolution of the USN revealed a sudden change in the hydrological functioning of the network, which seemed to be a consequence of the combined effects of patchy urban development and changes in network connectivity. The interactions between the urban spatial pattern, stormwater infrastructure, and surface runoff may result in threshold‐like behavior. A spatial multiscale approach to stormwater management may be beneficial to ensure that hydrological benefits at one scale do not cause unintended consequences at another. Overall, the retrospective modeling and network analysis approach used in this study may be useful for understanding emergent urban stormwater impacts. This article reports on 18th annual meeting of the American Society of Primatologists. The meeting will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona from June 21, 1995 to June 25, 1995.
