A questionnaire was used to investigate the perception of creativity and game intelligence of coaches (n = 34, mean age 28.6 with an average of 14.3 years of experience) and players (n = 118, belonging to the ranks U-15 and U-19). Analyses indicated that there were statistically significant differences in most creative concepts inherent in the perception of creativity on the part of coaches. The results for the perception of the players showed that there were statistically significant differences in the importance attached to creativity and game intelligence. Apparently coaches mostly associate the creativity in soccer to a kind of magical thinking, adding also the game intelligence to the ability of rationality, problem solving, and decision. There was a strong correlation between creativity and game intelligence for the players.

Immigration from Eastern European countries to Portugal is a recent phenomenon. Within the last decade, economic migrants from Ukraine, Russia, Romania and Moldova set up a number of supplementary schools across the country. No academic attention has been given to the phenomenon of supplementary ethnic schools in Portugal, whilst there is a growing interest in and beyond Europe in the ways they serve as cultural, social and political sources for identity negotiation, and structures for social capital formation in migrant communities. This study addresses this gap in knowledge. Drawing on a survey completed by 184 students between the ages of 12 and 20, attending eight Ukrainian supplementary schools, this paper contributes to wider international research through its mapping of the population of Ukrainian schools in Portugal and examining students' reasons for attendance, highlighting both positive and negative aspects of their experiences. Recommendations are made for schools in light of the findings.

Grief rumination is characterized by recurring, repetitive, self-focused thoughts about the causes and consequences of loss and loss-related emotions. This cognitive process is a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental disorders, such as prolonged grief. The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS). The sample consists of 242 bereaved adult participants with Portuguese nationality. Confirmatory Factor Analysis showed that the hierarchical model showed a better fit to the data. Average Variance Extracted was also calculated to measure convergent and divergent validity. Test-criterion validity was investigated by analyzing associations between grief rumination and measures of posttraumatic stress, prolonged grief, anxiety, and depression. Using McDonald's Omega and Cronbach's Alpha, all subscales showed adequate reliability. The UGRS showed acceptable psychometric properties, standing out as a valid instrument for practice and research in psychology in the area of ​​bereavement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to evaluate the interaction effect of socio-economic environment (SEE) in the relationship between the eating location (EL) and diet quality, in children and adolescents. Data included Portuguese children and adolescents (3–17 years) from a National Dietary Survey Sample (IAN-AF 2015/2016, n 987). Dietary intake was obtained by 2-d food diaries (children) or 2–24-h-recall (adolescents). Participants were classified into four groups of EL: 'Home', 'Other homes', 'School' and 'Restaurants'. Diet quality was measured as a higher adherence to a healthy eating pattern. A previous developed socio-economic classification was used, and participants were grouped as belonging to a low socio-economic environment (LSE) or middle-high socio-economic environment (MHSE). Linear regression models were used to evaluate the association between EL and diet quality, stratified by the SEE. A statistically significant interaction effect was found (P < 0·01) for the SEE in the association between EL and diet quality. After adjustment for potential confounders, in LSE, participants belonging to 'Other homes' (β = –2·07; 95 % CI:–3·70, –0·44) and 'Restaurants' (β = –3·31; 95 % CI: –5·08, –1·54) had lower scores in the diet quality score, comparing to 'Home'. In MHSE, comparing with 'Home', 'Restaurants' showed lower diet quality (β = –1·56; 95 % CI:–2·65, –0·48), while the 'School' had better diet quality (β = 0·90; 95 % CI: 0·16, 1·64). The SEE influences the association between EL and diet quality and, belonging to more disadvantaged SEE, might represent a higher risk of unhealthy eating habits when eating out-of-home. Background: The current pandemic situation led to deep changes not only in social relationships, but also on clinical care and access to healthcare facilities. The authors aimed to understand whether this context affected the main characteristics of psychiatric hospitalizations, measured by admissions in a portuguese acute psychiatric ward.Methods: Retrospective data collection of all patients admitted in Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa, in two different time periods: pre-COVID-19 (march 11th, 2019 to march 10th, 2020, n = 1845) and COVID-19 (march 11th, 2020 to march 10th, 2021, n = 1278); comparing the number of total admissions, compulsory ones, age, sex, median days of admission, median days to readmission and diagnosis at discharge. Distribution of disorders in both groups, as well as in compulsory admissions were also evaluated. The same comparisons were evaluated in the 15-25-year-old patient group.Results: Statistical significance was found regarding total number of admissions (reduction of around 30.7%), as well as compulsory ones (reduction of 14%, although the relative frequency had increased), days of admission and distribution between admissions (with lower reductions regarding dementias, schizophrenia and affective disorders, while substance use disorders and intellectual disabilities presented reductions of over 50%), with no differences between gender, median age, previous admissions or readmissions. Distribution between compulsory admissions did not present differences before and during COVID periods. For patients between 15 and 25 years of age, statistical significance was found regarding total number of compulsory ones (94 versus 44, p-value = 0.01), and in all groups of diagnoses (all with p-value = 0.001).Conclusions: While there was a general reduction in the overall number of patients admitted, in the most severe conditions (compulsory admissions and schizophrenia diagnosis) did not present such a reduction. Difficulties in social, clinical and family networks can explain the reduction of the time to readmission. Future research could show whether there is a rebound increase number of admissions in the other diagnoses.Trial Registration: The current study was approved by the hospital's scientific and ethics committees (CCP number 0060/2021 and CES 09/2021). Sensors deployed within water distribution systems collect consumption data that enable the application of data analysis techniques to extract essential information. Time series clustering has been traditionally applied for modeling end-user water consumption profiles to aid water management. However, its effectiveness is limited by the diversity and local nature of consumption patterns. In addition, existing techniques cannot adequately handle changes in household composition, disruptive events (e.g., vacations), and consumption dynamics at different time scales. In this context, biclustering approaches provide a natural alternative to detect groups of end-users with coherent consumption profiles during local time periods while addressing the aforementioned limitations. This work discusses when, why and how to apply biclustering techniques for water consumption data analysis, and further proposes a methodology to this end. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work introducing biclustering to water consumption data analysis. Results on data from a real-world water distribution system—Quinta do Lago, Portugal—confirm the potentialities of the proposed approach for pattern discovery with guarantees of statistical significance and robustness that entities can rely on for strategic planning. This study aimed to analyze caregivers and care recipients' health characteristics and caregiving context changes during a one-year follow-up. A total of 204 informal caregivers and oldest-old care recipients (≥ 80 years) were assessed on two occasions, 12 months apart. Information was retrieved on the dyad's sociodemographic profile, caregiver's health/caregiving outcomes, care recipients' dependency level, and caregiving context. Descriptive analysis was performed for all variables and comparisons between the two moments using paired t tests or McNemar tests. Caregiving hours, caregiver burden, and negative aspects of caregiving got significantly worse over one year. The number of unmet needs, in-home services utilization, and self-perception of mental health improved. Care recipients declined in their functional and health status and on their cognitive performance. This study provides information about caregiving trajectory changes over one year and stresses a probable caregiver adaptation even when facing increasing caregiving demands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Inequalities in the distribution of self-reported health (SRH) have been widely reported. Its higher expressivity among women, elderly and least educated groups has been partly attributed to differences in their health perceptions. However, this subjectivity may be masking the burden of mental illness in these groups. Thus, we sought to understand if depression symptoms mediate inequalities in SRH. Methods SHARE waves 4 and 6, pertaining to Spain, Italy and Portugal, were used (n 2011 = 8517, n 2015 = 11 046). Inequalities in SRH were calculated, comparing the risk amongst education level, gender and age groups, adjusting for chronic diseases, functional limitations and country fixed effects. We then tested depression symptoms as mediators. Results Depression symptoms were associated with poor SRH (odds ratio (OR)2011 = 1.379, OR2015 = 1.384, P < 0.001). Their inclusion reduced the magnitude of the association between SRH and education, annulled the statistical significance for age, and reversed the gender effect. As expected, chronic diseases and functional limitations remained significant predictors of poor SRH. Conclusions Depression symptoms, together with chronic diseases and functional limitations, explain the poorer SRH of the least educated, female and older groups in the Southern European population. Therefore, tackling inequalities in SRH must require focusing on mental health issues, which disproportionately affect the most vulnerable groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of pain neuroscience education (PNE) and neck/shoulder exercises with no intervention in adolescents with chronic idiopathic neck pain (CINP). Methods: Forty-three adolescents with CINP were randomly allocated to receive PNE and shoulder/neck exercises (n = 21) or no intervention (n = 22). Data on pain intensity, neck flexor and extensor muscles endurance, scapular stabilizers endurance, pain catastrophizing, anxiety, and knowledge of pain neurophysiology were collected. Measurements were taken before and after the intervention. Results: All participants completed the study. Analysis using ANCOVA revealed a significant increase in the neck extensors endurance capacity (adjusted mean ± SE change = + 47.5 ± 13.5 s versus +14.2 ± 13.1 s) and knowledge of pain neurophysiology (adjusted mean ± SE change = + 9.8 ± 3.2 versus −0.6 ± 0.6) in the group receiving the intervention. A higher mean decrease in pain intensity, pain catastrophizing and anxiety and a higher mean increase in the scapular stabilizers endurance capacity were also found in the intervention group, but differences did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Results suggest a potential benefit of PNE and exercise for adolescents with CINP. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective This study explored whether a cartoon show with healthy eating messages positively affected children's food choices and food preferences. Design Experimental between-subjects design. Setting Four elementary schools in Portugal were investigated. Participants Children (aged 4–8 years; n = 142) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: a comparison group (n = 73) was exposed to cartoons with no reference to food and an intervention group (n = 69) was exposed to cartoons with healthy eating messages. After viewing, each child was given the opportunity to eat ad libitum for 10 minutes from a small selection of snack foods. Main Outcome Measure Number of healthy and unhealthy food items chosen. Food preferences were measured using an adapted version of the Leeds Food Preference Checklist. Analysis Generalized linear models were used to test for differences between groups. Results were considered significant at P  ≤ .05. Results Children in the experimental group chose significantly more healthy food items than did those in the comparison group (B = –.600; SE = .19; P  < .05). Conclusions and Implications Future studies may address the effect of prolonged exposure to healthy eating cartoons. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the cumulative physiological burden of repetitive, strenuous exercise held during mountain cycling ultramarathon on regulatory mechanisms of hemoglobin degradation. Methods: Fifty-five nonprofessional athletes (mean age, 44.8 ± 7.1 yr) participating in a 9-consecutive-day mountain cycling ultramarathon (TransPortugal) underwent anthropometric, hematological, and biochemical assessments before and immediately after the race. Participants were further stratified as completers (nine courses) or noncompleters and were divided according to the time they took to complete the race. The heme oxygenase-1 (HMOX1) functional genetic polymorphism and haptoglobin (HP) phenotypic variants were also analyzed. Results: Total leukocytes, neutrophil count, and monocyte count increased, whereas decreases in erythrocyte counts and hemoglobin were found between pre- and postultramarathon. Circulating haptoglobin (Hp) was increased, whereas its soluble receptor (sCD163) decreased. Athletes who completed all nine courses presented with increased leukocyte, neutrophil, and erythrocyte counts, as well as hemoglobin, red cell distribution width, total bilirubin, and total cholesterol levels. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein and Hp decreased in comparison with noncompleters. HMOX1 and HP genetic polymorphisms were associated with biochemical profile, notably with Hp levels. Analysis of covariance showed a significant effect of HP phenotype in Hp circulating levels at the end of race and on the magnitude of variation from pre- to postrace. Conclusions: Present findings support a comodulatory influence of genetic- and exercise-associated factors on resulting inflammatory and hemoglobin catabolic marker Hp after highly demanding endurance exercise. High muscular fitness (MF) and high adherence to the Southern European Atlantic Diet (the SEADiet) have been associated with several positive metabolic outcomes. The purpose of the present study was two-fold: (i) to explore the independent associations between MF and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels; and (ii) to investigate the combined impact of MF and SEADiet on the CRP levels in a sample of adolescents. A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted on 463 adolescents (272 girls) aged 15–18 years, from the Portuguese Azorean Archipelago. Anthropometric indicators (stature, body mass, waist circumference (WC)) were measured by standardized protocols and pubertal stages were assessed by Tanner criteria. Blood samples were taken after an overnight fast. MF was assessed by the curl-up and push-up tests (from the Fitnessgram test battery). Adherence to the SEADiet was assessed with a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Linear regression models showed that MF was inversely associated with hs-CRP (unstandardizedB = −0.127;p < .009), after adjustments for age, sex, and pubertal stage, adherence of SEADiet, total energy intake and low-energy reporter and WC. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed a significant difference between the low adherence of SEADiet with low MF group and those with a high adherence of SEADiet and high MF (p < .05) (F(5, 453) = 2.238,p = .040). Our results showed that MF is inversely associated with hs-CRP. In addition, the adolescents with Low adherence of SEADiet/Low MF group had high levels of hs-CRP compared those who with high adherence of SEADiet/high MF group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Circulating leptin and adiponectin levels have been associated with impaired vascular function, insulin resistance, and acute cardiovascular evens. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of leptin, adiponectin, and the leptin/adiponectin (L/A) ratio with a clustering of metabolic risk factors (MRF) in adolescents aged 12–18 years. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis with 529 Portuguese adolescents aged 12–18 years. Blood samples were taken to analyze total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (HDL-c), triglycerides glucose, insulin, leptin, and adiponectin levels. A continuous variable of clustered MRF score (sum of Z-scores of body fat percentage, systolic blood pressure, ratio TC/HDL, triglycerides, homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance, and cardiorespiratory fitness* [–1]) was computed. Results: Regression analyses showed that adiponectin was a significant and negative predictor of MRF score (boys: β = –0.199; p < 0.001; girls: β = –0.200; p < 0.001); whereas leptin was a significant positive predictor of MRF score (boys: β = 0.553; p < 0.001; girls: β = 0.399; p < 0.001). The L/A ratio was also a significant positive predictor of MRF score in both sexes (boys: β = 0.593; p < 0.001; girls: β = 0.461; p < 0.001), after adjustments for age, pubertal stage, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and socioeconomic status. In addition, adiponectin, leptin, and L/A ratio were accurate to predict MRF among adolescents, but L/A ratio showed the highest area under receiver operating characteristic curve. Conclusion: Leptin, adiponectin, and L/A ratio are associated with the clustering of MRF in adolescents after adjustments for age, sex, pubertal stage, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and socioeconomic status. Aim: The impact of sarcopenia on hospitalisation has been under intense investigation; however, little is known about the association between sarcopenia and their costs among hospitalised patients. The aim of the present study was to quantify the association between sarcopenia and hospitalisation costs among older adults. Methods: A cross ‐ sectional study was conducted in 201 hospitalised older adults in a general hospital. Sarcopenia was identified according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria. Muscle mass was assessed by anthropometric measurements, muscle strength through handgrip strength evaluation and physical performance by Timed Up and Go Test. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment—Short Form (MNA ‐ SF), and hospital costs were assessed with the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) system. Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to quantify the association between sarcopenia and hospital costs. Increased hospital costs were considered when a patients′ cost was higher than the mean cost of an average patient (€2396.24). Results: Within this sample, 10.4% sarcopenic, 43.8% at nutritional risk and 14.9% undernourished older adults were identified. After adjustment, sarcopenia (OR = 5.70, 95% CI 1.57 – 20.71) and low muscle strength (OR = 2.40, 95% CI 1.12 – 5.15) were associated with increased hospital costs. As anger is one of the most commonly experienced emotions in sport competition, this study aims to explore the individual differences in anger. A multisport sample of 269 athletes completed self-report measures of anger and several cognitive, motivational, and emotional variables. The results revealed significant differences in approach and avoidance motivation, anger rumination, thought suppression, antisocial behavior toward teammates and opponents, and self-control among athletes with different levels of anger. In addition, antisocial behavior toward opponents and teammates, anger rumination, challenge appraisals, and self-control predicted anger levels and significantly discriminated between athletes with low and high trait anger. Study Design Longitudinal descriptive exploratory study. Objectives To evaluate in primigravid women the immediate effect of drawing-in and abdominal crunch exercises on inter-rectus distance (IRD), measured at 4 time points during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Background There is scant knowledge of the effect of different abdominal exercises on IRD in pregnant and postpartum women. Methods The study included 84 primiparous participants. Ultrasound images were recorded with a 12-MHz linear transducer, at rest and during abdominal drawing-in and abdominal crunch exercises, at 3 locations on the linea alba. The IRD was measured at 4 time points: gestational weeks 35 to 41, 6 to 8 weeks postpartum, 12 to 14 weeks postpartum, and 24 to 26 weeks postpartum. Separate 2-way, repeated-measures analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were performed for each exercise (drawing-in and abdominal crunch) and each measurement location to evaluate the immediate effects of exercises on IRD at each of the 4 time points. Similarly, 2-way ANOVAs were used to contrast the effects of the 2 exercises on IRD. Results Performing the drawing-in exercise caused a significant change in width of the IRD at 2 cm below the umbilicus, narrowing the IRD by a mean of 3.8 mm (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.2, 6.4 mm) at gestational weeks 35 to 41, and widening the IRD by 3.0 mm (95% CI: 1.4, 4.6 mm) at 6 to 8 weeks postpartum, by 1.8 mm (95% CI: 0.6, 3.1 mm) at 12 to 14 weeks postpartum, and by 2.5 mm (95% CI: 1.4, 3.6 mm) at 24 to 26 weeks postpartum (P<.01). Performing the abdominal crunch exercise led to a significant narrowing of the IRD (P<.01) in all 3 locations at all 4 time points, with the exception of 2 cm below the umbilicus at postpartum weeks 24 to 26. The average amount of narrowing varied from 1.6 to 20.9 mm, based on time and location. Conclusion Overall, there was a contrasting effect of the 2 exercises, with the abdominal crunch exercise consistently producing a significant narrowing of the IRD. Purpose: The aim of this study was to study the association between the consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years and body mass index (BMI) at 4 years, using a cross-lagged panel design. Methods: The present study included 589 children evaluated at 2 and 4 years of age, as part of the birth cohort generation XXI. Information was obtained by face-to-face interviews. Consumption of energy-dense foods (salty snacks, soft drinks, cakes, and sweets) was measured using a food frequency questionnaire. Children's weight and height were measured by standard procedures, and BMI standard deviation scores (BMI z-scores) were calculated according to the World Health Organization. Linear regression and cross-lagged panel design models were fitted to estimate the associations between the consumption of energy-dense foods and BMI z-scores (controlled for maternal age, education and prepregnancy BMI, and children's exact age at 2 years). Results: The consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years was significantly associated with their consumption at 4 years ( β = 0.522, 95 % CI 0.432-0.612). Children's BMI z-scores at 2 years were associated with posterior BMI z-scores ( β = 0.747, 95 % CI 0.688-0.806). In the cross-lagged analysis, consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years had no effect on subsequent BMI z-scores ( β = −0.030, 95 % CI −0.095 to 0.035) and BMI z-scores at 2 years were not significantly associated with the consumption of energy-dense foods at 4 years ( β = −0.012, 95 % CI −0.086 to 0.062). Conclusions: Consumption of energy-dense foods and BMI tracked over time, but the consumption of energy-dense foods at 2 years was not associated with BMI z-scores at 4 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of our study was to describe the level of global motor development of elementary school-aged children with and without previous swimming practice. The study sample consisted of 140 Portuguese elementary school-aged children, from 1st to 4th grade: 53 children with no previous experience in aquatic programs and; 87 children classified as experienced through participating in previous swimming programs within the school environment. To assess global motor development, the "Test of Gross Motor Development 2" was used. Our results showed significant differences (p < .05) between groups of children regarding to the global motor development and mastery of various skills in all grades. The influence of previous swimming practice seems greater on objects control skills. Nevertheless, the qualitative classification of motor development is mostly low for both groups. In conclusion the current results showed that the level of global motor development of Portuguese elementary school-aged children, based on the proposed American normative scale, is relatively low. Nevertheless, children with prior involvement in swimming programs within the educational context seem to meet an optimized motor development state on several global motor skills but particularly on objects control skills. Background: Variants genotypes of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) lead to the inactive or less active form of the isoenzymes, which may alter protection against oxidative stress. Research question: Analyse the influence of GSTM1 and GSTT1 null polymorphisms on event expertise in high-level Portuguese swimmers. Methods: A group of high-level Portuguese swimmers (n=33, 20 males, 13 female; 18.84 ± 2.97 years), designated as Olympic candidates, were recruited and stratified into two groups, based on their current distance event of expertise: short distance swimmers, between 50 and 200 m and middle distance swimmers, between 400 and 1.500 m. A control group of healthy individuals (n=52, 38 males, 14 females; 20.5 ± 1.52 years) was also selected from the Portuguese population, with no background in swimming. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples, and genotyping analyses were performed by PCR methods. Genotype distributions between groups were compared by Chi-Square test or Fisher's exact test where appropriate. Results: The genotype distribution of the GSTM1 of high-level swimmers is significantly different to the control group (χ²=6.079, p=0.014). The distribution of the combined genotype M1-T1+, which reflects the presence of the GSTT1 protein in the absence of GSTM1 protein, is also statically different between high-level swimmers and controls (χ²=4.664, p=0.0031). However, the analysis by race distance showed a significant higher frequency of the GSTM1 null genotype only on high-level short-distance swimmers when compared to controls (χ²=6.180, p=0.013). Conclusions: The absence of GSTM1 protein production leads to a profile potentially more favourable to competitive swimming but particularly for swimming performance in shorter events. This study aims to examine the effect of differences in the number of players and scoring method on heart rate responses, time–motion characteristics, and technical/tactical performance during small-sided soccer games. Ten male amateur soccer players (26.4 ± 5.3 years old, 8.4 ± 3.2 years of practice, 179.3 ± 5.2 cm body height, 71.2 ± 7.1 kg body weight, 45.8 ± 2.6 ml.kg–1min–1VO2max) from the Portuguese regional league played nine different small-sided games (i.e., 3 formats × 3 scoring methods). The study used two-way MANOVA, two-away ANOVA, and one-way ANOVA, depending on the specific procedure for the analysis. Compared with other formats, 2v2 induced significantly greater values of technical/tactical indexes (p = 0.001), 3v3 induced significantly higher %HRreserve values (p = 0.001), and 4v4 led to significantly greater distance coverage and speed (p = 0.001). The study provided evidence for coaches to set different small-sided game conditions depending on the training purpose in terms of physiological, physical, and technical performance. Objective The aetiology of anorexia nervosa (AN) is considered to be multifactorial. This study aims to identify potential risk factors for AN and whether these factors are specific to AN or precede the development of psychiatric disorders in general and to identify specific life events in the 12 months immediately preceding the onset of eating disorder (ED) symptoms. Method A case-control design was used to compare a group of women who meet Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition criteria for AN ( N = 86) with healthy controls ( N = 86) and with a group of controls with other psychiatric disorders ( N = 68), each group matched to the AN patients by age and parental socioeconomic status bands. Risk factors were assessed by interviewing each person with the Oxford Risk Factor Interview. Results Women with AN reported significantly higher rates of perfectionism, negative attitudes toward parents' shape and weight, significant concern about feeling fat and a family history of AN or bulimia nervosa. Critical comments about weight, shape or eating was the most notable event in the year preceding AN onset. Discussion Perfectionism and a family history of ED emerged as the most convergent findings in the development of AN, along with being critical toward parents' shape and weight, and feeling fat. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an exercise program on changes in physical activity (PA) levels of hemodialysis patients. The sample consisted of 24 hemodialysis patients, 45.8% of female subjects, with an average age of 75.1 ± 11.8 years, were subjected to an aerobic exercise program intradialytic 3 times per week over 8 weeks. The training load was individualized with progressive increase through the self-perception effort. Accelerometers were used for the evaluation of PA during a continuous week, before and after the implementation of the program. The results suggested that PA mainly performed in both moments of evaluation was light intensity, on the other hand, the moderate and vigorous PA together constituted less than 1% of total PA performed. The time spent in light PA increased significantly between the pre and post-test (p= 0.03), while the time spent in sedentary activities, moderate PA and vigorous PA did not change significantly. The article discusses a study of the attributes of top team-handball players which indicates that a fitness model which considers body mass, sprint time, offensive power, ego-based motivational orientation, and the energy spent in handball activity can frequently predict the probability of an athlete becoming an elite team-handball player. The aim of the study was to compare the maximal physiological responses during three protocols: maximal test on land cycle ergometer, maximal test on water cycling in an indoor pool at 27 °C (WC27) and at 31 °C (WC31). Moreover, the submaximal physiological responses were compared according cycling cadences and water temperatures during the water protocols. Ten young men were included and performed the protocols in separate days. Blood lactate (BL) concentration, heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (O2), ventilation (VE) and thermal comfort (TC) were collected during the exercise. The maximal HR andO2showed no significant differences between the protocols: HRmax: 189±7 (Land), 188±14 (WC27), 185±9 bpm (WC31) andO2max: 4.2±0.4 (Land), 4.1±0.5 (WC27) and 4.3±0.5 l min−1(WC31). However, the maximal BL demonstrated significant lower values during the water protocols compared to the land protocol (p=0.018). All the submaximal physiological responses showed significant differences between the cadences (60, 70, 80 and 90 rpm). The effect of water temperature was significant for TC response (p=0.001) showing higher values at 31 °C than 27 °C (TCW27: 7±1 and TCW31:9±1). In conclusion, higher physiological responses were showed by increasing the cadence by 10 rpm and the subjects were more comfortable when cycling in the lower water temperature. Background There is conflicting evidence regarding the benefits of intensive speech and language therapy (SLT), particularly because intensity is often confounded with total SLT provided. Aims A two-centre, randomized, rater-blinded, parallel study was conducted to compare the efficacy of 100 h of SLT in a regular (RT) versus intensive (IT) treatment in sub-acute post-stroke aphasia. Methods & Procedures Consecutive patients with aphasia, within 3 months of a left hemisphere ischemic stroke, were randomized to IT (2 h per day × 5 days per week, 10 weeks) or RT (2 h per week × 50 weeks). Evaluations took place at 10, 50 and 62 weeks. Primary outcome was the frequency of responders, defined by 15% increase of Aphasia Quotient (AQ) from the baseline to 50 weeks. Secondary outcomes were changes from the baseline in AQ and functional communication profile (FCP) at 50 and 62 weeks and improvement stability between 50 and 62 weeks. Outcomes & Results Thirty patients were randomized and 18 completed the study. No significant differences were found between groups in primary or secondary outcomes, although IT patients ( N = 9) obtained higher scores in language measures between 10 and 62 weeks in per protocol analysis. The number of non-completions was identical between groups. Conclusions & Implications This study suggests that, in the sub-acute period following stroke and controlling for the number of hours of SLT provided, there is a trend for a greater improvement in language and functional communication measures with IT compared with RT. The article reports on research which was conducted to investigate the effect a 10 week resistance training program had on explosive strength development in adolescent basketball players. Researchers evaluated 25 athletes. They found that the program led to increased explosivity levels, increased vertical jumping and increased performance in the seated medicine ball throw test.

The aim of this study was to identify student's motivations for sport involvement according with student's characteristics as gender, age and school level. The subjects were 1016 students, from ten different schools from the Lisbon metropolitan area, (577 male and 439 female; between 10 and 20 years old). We used a five points Likert type questionnaire with 30 items, a Portuguese version of the PMQ developed by Gill et al. (1983), translated and validated by Frias and Serpa (1991). A principal component analysis for the evaluation of the scale was done, and Descriptive statistics, Anova and Bonferroni test were used. The results showed that, globally, the most valorised motivations for participation in physical activity were reasons related with Fitness/Technical Achievement and Team Work and the less indicated motive was Status. Comparing motivational factors according to student's school level and gender we found significant differences. Several motivational factors were significantly influenced by students' age. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether biological methods based on epilithic littoral diatoms are a valuable complement to other biological elements for the assessment of the ecological potential of reservoirs in Portugal, in accordance with the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive. The statistical analysis performed (PCA, DCA, ANOSIM and SIMPER) based on the study of diatom communities of 18 reservoirs allowed the following results: (i) the separation of all the a priori defined types (North, Main Courses and South) was proved; (ii) there were no significant differences between reservoirs classified as reference and non-reference and (iii) the classification of the reservoirs as reference or non-reference based on the use of the diatom Specific Pollution sensitivity Index as a complementary variable allowed the definition of Maximum Ecological Potential reservoirs for the North and South types. Methods based on the use of epilithic littoral diatoms can therefore contribute, together with other biological elements, for the assessment of the ecological potential of aquatic lentic systems in Portugal, almost exclusively constituted by reservoirs. Purpose: Excess weight may be related to the development of adverse cardiometabolic risk factors in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a lifestyle intervention program (nutrition and exercise counseling) on anthropometric parameters and metabolic syndrome (MS) components in Portuguese overweight/obese children. Methods: A total of 83 overweight/obese children aged 7-9 years were assigned to a 1-year individual or group-based treatment (GT); 61 children (z-score BMI (zBMI): 1.93 ± 0.28; 27 boys and 34 girls) completed the program. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were assessed at baseline, at 6 months and at 1 year. Results: The overweight/obese children, compared to normal-weight ones, presented significantly higher blood pressure, total-cholesterol, total-cholesterol/high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) ratio, triglycerides, Apolipoprotein B and C-reactive protein levels, while HDL and Apolipoprotein A-I were significantly lower. At baseline, the prevalence of MS was 16.4% in overweight/obese and 0% in normal-weight children. The number of components of MS was significantly higher in children with higher zBMI. Lifestyle intervention led to a significant improvement in zBMI, waist circumference/height ratio, HDL, triglycerides, Apolipoprotein A-I, and Apolipoprotein B levels. The prevalence of MS decreased to 14.8%. The GT intervention seems to be more successful, with a significant decrease in zBMI and an increase in HDL and a lower drop-out rate. Conclusions: Overweight/obese children have multiple risk factors associated with the MS. The purpose of this study was: (i) to characterize the school indoor environment; (ii) to evaluate self-reported prevalence of disease symptoms among Portuguese teachers; and (iii) to evaluate, as far as we know for the first time in Portugal, the impact of the indoor air quality of schools on the prevalence of disease symptoms among teachers. The study was performed in the city of Oporto, starting in 2004; it included the analysis of questionnaires fulfilled by schoolteachers (n = 177), walkthrough surveys of schools grounds, buildings, and individual classrooms (n = 76), as well as indoor air monitoring. Respirable particle increase was related to chalk use and CO2 concentrations widely exceeded reference values. Schools located near traffic lines presented higher benzene and toluene concentrations. The guideline for total viable microorganism concentration was exceeded in 35.6% of classrooms. Significant increases in disease symptoms among teachers could be related to poor indoor air quality, which was mainly due to inefficient ventilation and influence of traffic emissions. Statistically significant correlations were found between central nervous system injuries and the levels of CO2 and total volatile organic compounds, and between upper respiratory problems and mucosal irritation and the levels of TVOC and respirable particles. Forest managers rely on accurate burn severity estimates to evaluate post-fire damage and to establish revegetation policies. Burn severity estimates based on reflective data acquired from sensors onboard satellites are increasingly complementing field-based ones. However, fire not only induces changes in reflected and emitted radiation measured by the sensor, but also on energy balance. Evapotranspiration (ET), land surface temperature (LST) and land surface albedo (LSA) are greatly affected by wildfires. In this study, we examine the usefulness of these elements of energy balance as indicators of burn severity and compare the accuracy of burn severity estimates based on them to the accuracy of widely used approaches based on spectral indexes. We studied a mega-fire (more than 450 km2 burned) in Central Portugal, which occurred from 17 to 24 June 2017. The official burn severity map acted as a ground reference. Variations induced by fire during the first year following the fire event were evaluated through changes in ET, LST and LSA derived from Landsat data and related to burn severity. Fisher's least significant difference test (ANOVA) revealed that ET and LST images could discriminate three burn severity levels with statistical significance (uni-temporal and multi-temporal approaches). Burn severity was estimated from ET, LST and LSA using thresholding. Accuracy of ET and LST based on burn severity estimates was adequate (κ = 0.63 and 0.57, respectively), similar to the accuracy of the estimate based on dNBR (κ = 0.66). We conclude that Landsat-derived surface energy balance variables, in particular ET and LST, in addition to acting as useful indicators of burn severity for mega-fires in Mediterranean ecosystems, may provide critical information about how energy balance changes due to fire. The aims of the study were to (1) analyse the activity profile of youth football players during competitive matches, and (2) examine the relationship between physical match performance and intermittent exercise performance as well as. Thirty youth male football players, aged 14–17 years, carried out a laboratory treadmill test for determination ofas well as the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1) and Yo-Yo intermittent endurance level 2 (Yo-Yo IE2) tests. Time–motion analysis and heart rate (HR) recordings were performed during two competitive matches per player. Distance covered during the match was 6311±948 (range: 4435–8098) m, of which 12% were high-intensity activities (HIA; 759±437 [374–2062] m), and 5% was backwards running (309±205 [12–776] m). Mean match HR was 168±12 (140–187) bpm, corresponding to 85% (69–91) of maximum HR. The total distance covered in the last 13.3-min period of the match was 40%, 26% and 17% lower than in the first, second and fourth 13.3-min periods of the match, respectively (P<0.05). The distance covered in backwards running decreased by 31% and 37% from the first to the last 13.3-min periods of the first and second half, respectively (P<0.05). The Yo-Yo IR1 was significantly associated with the time spent with sprinting during the match (r=0.63;P=0.002) and during the last 13.3-min period (r=0.63;P=0.022). Both Yo-Yo IR1 and Yo-Yo IE2 were correlated with the time spent with match HIA (r=0.56 andr=0.57, respectively;P<0.05). No significant relationship was observed betweenand match time–motion variables (r=−0.13–0.25;P>0.05) or Yo-Yo test performances (r=0.09–0.26;P>0.05). In conclusion, youth football players have a high heart-rate loading during match play and a decreased running performance towards the end of the game.
