Currently, the study of non-cognitive variables and their effect on the academic performance of students has gained relevance. In view of that, the purpose of the present study was to analyze through structural equation modeling to what extent growth mindset, self-efficacy, and grit have direct effects on student performance. For this, an explanatory design of latent variables was followed, in which 305 university students participated, including men (41.8%) and women (58.2%), who reported an average age of 22.8 (SD = 3.5), all included due to convenience. To measure the independent variables, the ITIS (growth mindset), Grit-S (tenacity) and EPAESA (academic self-efficacy) were applied, while for the measurement of the dependent variable, the grades of the students of the two last semesters were used. Among the main findings, it is reported that growth mindset, grit, and self-efficacy have direct and significant effects on the academic performance of students. In conclusion, this set of non-cognitive variables successfully explains the academic performance of the study participants.

The introduction of ChatGPT into basic education is progressing rapidly, generating impacts that, in many cases, are unknown. Its impressive capability profiles it as a tool that will revolutionize teaching and learning processes, creating gaps that need to be understood and evaluated. The research aims to explore the advantages, disadvantages, and its impact on school tasks. It is an exploratory qualitative study; data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 110 participants from five schools in Tacna, Peru. The results reveal that ChatGPT provides information quickly and easily, with a variety of content and pedagogical strategies. Additionally, it serves for evaluation, knowledge consultation, and scheduling school tasks. Eight related disadvantages were identified: Easy access to information may encourage the habit of copying and pasting, fostering academic dependence that would affect the development of skills, such as inquiry, argumentation, analysis, and critical thinking. Also, students may misuse information, cheating on school tasks and affecting their quality and suitability, making them no longer useful for education, including synthesis, essays, monographs, organizers, summaries, and mathematical exercises.

The subject matter has been based on three systematizations of experiences in teacher training through remote teaching, during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021. They were developed in IES in Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru. The objective has been to show the experiences implemented to build the teachers' pedagogical knowledge, from online teaching practices. The theoretical framework has been the theory of collaborative and developmental learning, according to L. S. Vigotski and his followers. The work methodology has been the systematization of experiences, according to Jara and others. The results of the Brazilian experience show how it is possible for students of the degree in pedagogy to acquire didactic knowledge and develop skills, through collaborative work in virtual rooms. The Ecuadorian experience shows the effectiveness of teaching focused on autonomous work, which is based on asynchronous activities. The results of the experience in Peru show how asynchronous accompaniment is an effective means for guidance and sustained feedback by the trainer, with an impact on the process of construction of a scientific text and on the productivity of the doctoral student in Education.

When observing in the high school as well as higher education classrooms, the way adolescents and young people study, the idea of knowing if they have strategies for autonomous learning and if this variable explained to some extent a critical problem in Peru arose: reading comprehension. That is why it was proposed as a purpose of the study, to know if the autonomous learning strategies, its dimensions and indicators have some explanatory power on reading comprehension. Under a causal correlational design of an exploratory nature, the following instruments were applied: Autonomous work strategies questionnaire (CETA) that evaluates the strategies of expansion, collaboration, conceptualization, planning, preparation of exams and participation and PECL 2 test to measure levels of reading comprehension: literal, inferential and evaluative in a group of 144 students from educational institutions from the districts of Majes in Arequipa and Villa Rica in Pasco. Among the most important results was that 79.33% of students reached a level in process regarding the use of autonomous learning strategies and 62.7% reached the same level in reading comprehension. Likewise, it was found that 34.4% of the reading comprehension variable is accounted for the use of autonomous learning strategies. Out of that total, 25.8% for expansion strategies, 14.3% for collaboration strategies, 28.7% for conceptualization strategies, 19.6% for exam preparation strategies and finally, 19.5% for participation strategies.

Within the framework of the current University Law 30220 and the processes involved in its implementation in search for quality of higher education, this article is written to introduce the reader to what Peruvian universities are and should be doing to fulfill one of their important roles: research and technological development. Different documentary sources are reviewed based on the components of the research work referred to in the Frascati Manual: scientific teaching and training, research and development and technological scientific services.

Worldwide many crop varieties are considered seriously threatened while management strategies are still lacking. Goals and indicators relevant to the conservation of agrobiodiversity also remain to be developed. Here we present the results of three expert workshops in Peru designed to prioritise for conservation crops with high infra-specific diversity, along with the establishment of in-situ on-farm conservation goals and indicators. Analysing the results of a series of agrobiodiversity-related Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) interventions realised between 2010 and 2021, "gaps" between current conservation status and the conservation goals are established. The identification of such gaps within the Peruvian regulatory framework is indispensable for justifying long-term government funding. Furthermore, the goal and indicator development processes initiated in Peru could also form a template for other countries, with a view to supporting the implementation of a range of international treaties, conventions and development goals. This paper explores the contribution of universities to regional development and innovation in locked-in and vulnerable resource-based regions of the Global South. Building on a regional change agency approach, we identify the combination of key factors and context preconditions for universities to successfully fulfil their local engagement role in a particularly challenging environment. To do so, we use a comparative case study of two mining regions in Peru. Our results reveal that the prevalence of a climate of conflict and the lack of an innovation culture in the regional ecosystem are important challenges, while strategic leadership and institutional capacities are central elements for universities to fulfil their role as transformative agents. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, with over 83 million confirmed cases and 1.8 million deaths, has raised concerns about long-term cognitive issues, especially in populations facing disparities. Despite a few years since Peru's first COVID-19 wave, the cognitive effects on adults remain unclear. This study is the first in Peru to explore COVID-19's impact on general cognition and executive function. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study compared individuals with COVID-19 history to controls, assessing general cognition, verbal fluency, attention, and executive function. Among 240 assessed, 154 met the study inclusion criteria, with about 60% female and an average age of 38.89 ± 16.001 years. Groups included controls (n = 42), acute phase (AP, n = 74) (1-14 days of symptoms), and hyperinflammatory phase (HP, n = 38) (>14 days of symptoms). Results: Significant cognitive differences were observed. The HP group exhibited lower general cognitive performance (p = 0.02), working memory (p = 0.01), and executive function (planning; p < 0.001; flexibility; p = 0.03) than controls. Those with <14 days of illness (AP vs. HP) had deficits in general cognitive performance (p = 0.02), working memory (p = 0.02), and planning (p < 0.001), mainly during the hyperinflammatory phase, showing differences in working memory (p = 0.003) and planning (p = 0.01). Gender differences emerged, with males in the HP phase having poorer working memory (p = 0.003) and planning (p = 0.01). Discussion: This study underscores COVID-19's negative impact on cognitive function, even in mild cases, with potential heightened effects in men during acute or hyperinflammatory phases. As tropical glaciers recede in response to global warming, glaciated watershed resilience is threatened by the loss of these important water reservoirs. In the Cordillera Occidental, Peru, we investigate the importance of glacial meltwater to mountain groundwater recharge and subsequent discharge to streams surrounding the rapidly retreating Coropuna ice cap. Using stable isotopes, solute concentrations, and radiocarbon activity, our results suggest that in remote ungauged systems, glacial input can be determined via geochemical analysis and a simple mixing model approach. We find that the proportion of glacial meltwater contribution to groundwater and surface waters is spatially heterogeneous. Differences between drainages are attributed to the degree of melting of headwater glaciers and the routing of waters through volcanic strata. These results provide evidence that glacial meltwater recharge is highly variable even within the same mountain block. Furthermore, the effects on streamflow will be disproportionate as the watersheds approach an ice-free state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of the article was to investigate the possible inducing factors that contributed to determine the frequency of social conflicts at the subnational level in Peru between 2016 and 2021, including income inequality, social exclusion, fiscal centralism, corruption and revocation of authorities, for which four regression models were built. Disaggregated official data from the 24 departments and the provinces of Lima and Callao were analyzed. Economic inequality was associated with the Gini coefficient. To establish the association between social conflict and the inducers, it was estimated using Spearman’s Rho correlation coefficient. Statistical calculation was also employed to appreciate the collinearity between the inducers. The results showed that the revocation of subnational authorities determines 42.5% of social conflict. On the other hand, corruption and fiscal centralism determine 28.5% of the perception of suffering social exclusion. Inequality and social conflict determined 21.8% of the relevance of the execution and quality of public spending by the national government in the regions. Sixty percent of social conflicts in Peru are of an environmental nature. The population that has declared the greatest discrimination corresponds to Puno (28%). 55.6% of those surveyed consider corruption to be one of the country’s main problems. Corruption and social exclusion have a negative impact on the effectiveness of economic results and promote social conflicts. Inefficient use of fiscal resources translates into low quality of services and diminished credibility of the national and subnational governments. Societal Impact Statement: Given the current unprecedented concerns for global biodiversity loss, it is critical to identify best practices for describing new species more efficiently so we can complete the inventory of the Neotropical flora and implement appropriate conservation strategies in a timely manner. This study aims to answer the question of how long it takes to describe a new species of tree in the Neotropics by calculating the time elapsed from collection of the first specimen to the publication of a new species. It demonstrates that enhancing international collaboration and promoting taxonomy training may be the most efficient ways to accelerate species descriptions. Summary: One of the main aspects of taxonomic research is the description of new species. Identifying how to describe new species more efficiently is key to completing the inventory of the Neotropical flora in an era of massive biodiversity loss.Here, we calculate the interval between first specimen collection and publication of new species for a group of 2123 Neotropical trees, and discuss the historical context surrounding specimen collection and new species publication events.Our results reveal that on average, it takes almost 16 years from specimen collection to publication of a new Neotropical tree species, which is considerably shorter than previous estimates for other tropical groups. Peru had the longest average time lags by country, while Haiti had the shortest. The average time lags increased until the early 1900s, when a decrease was observed, with the shortest lags between 1941 and 1960.We found that the majority of the species described more rapidly are from plants collected by a field botanist and described by a herbarium‐based researcher as part of ad hoc collaboration, and the ones collected and described by the same researcher. We demonstrate how political instability and conflict can delay or impede the completion of taxonomic research initiatives in the region. We argue that enhancing international collaboration and training opportunities in Latin American countries, as well as ensuring safe plant collection campaigns, are critical to complete the inventory of the Neotropical flora. One of the world's major agricultural crops is rice (Oryza sativa), a staple food for more than half of the global population. In this research, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical images are used to analyze the monthly dynamics of this crop in the lower Utcubamba river basin, Peru. In addition, this study addresses the need to obtain accurate and timely information on the areas under cultivation in order to calculate their agricultural production. To achieve this, SAR sensor and Sentinel-2 optical remote sensing images were integrated using computer technology, and the monthly dynamics of the rice crops were analyzed through mapping and geometric calculation of the surveyed areas. An algorithm was developed on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) virtual platform for the classification of the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 images and a combination of both, the result of which was improved in ArcGIS Pro software version 3.0.1 using a spatial filter to reduce the "salt and pepper" effect. A total of 168 SAR images and 96 optical images were obtained, corrected, and classified using machine learning algorithms, achieving a monthly average accuracy of 96.4% and 0.951 with respect to the overall accuracy (OA) and Kappa Index (KI), respectively, in the year 2019. For the year 2020, the monthly averages were 94.4% for the OA and 0.922 for the KI. Thus, optical and SAR data offer excellent integration to address the information gaps between them, are of great importance to obtaining more robust products, and can be applied to improving agricultural production planning and management. The high-Andean grasslands of Peru provide a wide range of goods and services, not only locally, but also regionally and globally. However, land-use change and global warming are threatening these ecosystems, of which soil organic carbon (SOC) is a key element affecting their sustainability. In this study, we have analyzed the variation of SOC stocks to a depth of 20 cm in 16 paired cropland and grassland sites located in the Sullccapallcca stream micro-watershed (elevation > 3600 m.a.s.l., Ayacucho, Peru). We have also analyzed the environmental controls on the SOC stocks and their variation with land-use change. We found that the studied high-Andean grasslands store high SOC contents (247 Tn SOC ha−1), whose spatial variability was partially explained by the slope of the terrain (r2 = 0.26, p < 0.05). Despite the higher NDVI, the conversion of these grasslands into croplands decreased the SOC stock by 39 Tn SOC ha−1 on average, a decrease that was more pronounced when the initial SOC content of the grassland was higher (r2 = 0.60, p < 0.05). This study provides the first evidence of the effects of land-use change on the SOC in the region, although the mechanisms involved still need to be investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ignimbrite rock is a volcanic material located in the Arequipa region (Peru), and for centuries, it has been used as a construction material, giving a characteristic light pastel, white to pink color to the city of Arequipa, with white being the most common. In the present study, the potential use of three types of Arequipa raw materials (ignimbrite rock powder, calcined clay powder, and demolition mortar powder) as the main source of new binders or the manufacture of environmentally friendly mortars, without the addition of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is discussed. In this work, an in-depth characterization of the materials used was carried out. The proposed fabrication route for geopolymeric materials was considered for the manufacture of binders and mortars using an alkaline solution of NaOH with values between 12 and 18 molar, as a trigger for the geopolymerization process. Geopolymeric mortars were obtained by adding a controlled amount of fine sand to the previously prepared mixture of binder raw material and an alkaline solution. Conventional OPC and geopolymeric mortars manufactured under the same conditions were mechanically evaluated by uniaxial compression tests at a constant compression rate of 0.05 mm/min and under normal conditions of temperature and atmosphere, where the most optimal values were obtained for 15 molar alkaline solutions of ignimbrite without the addition of aggregates, with values of compressive strength of 42 MPa and a modulus elastic of 30 GPa. The results revealed a significant increase in the maximum strength and modulus of elasticity values when the volumetric fractions of OPC are completely replaced with geopolymeric binders in the study conditions of this work, demonstrating the enormous potential of the ignimbrite rock and construction waste studied, as raw material of alternative mortar binders without the addition of OPC. With this work, the ignimbrite rock, of great value in the region and also found in other areas of the Earth's geography, was characterized and valued, in addition to the calcined clay and demolition mortar of the region. The San Martín region, located in the northeast of Peru, is the area with the highest cocoa production in the country, highlighting the cocoa clones CCN-51, ICS-39 and ICS-95, of which their physicochemical behavior under storage conditions in the region is unknown. The objectives of present work were: Determine the equilibrium humidity of cocoa bean clones at different temperatures and relative humidity (water activity), model the experimental values of equilibrium humidity and water activity using different sorption equations, estimate the water content monolayer for the different temperature and relative humidity conditions used, and to evaluate the sensory attributes of cocoa beans during storage. The isotherms were obtained by the static gravimetric method, using saturated saline solutions of known water activity, in the range of 0.1 to 0.9. The mathematical models used were GAB, BET, Chung–Pfost, Harkins–Jura, Henderson, Smith, Halsey, Caurie and Kuhn, evaluating the quality of fit to the experimental data by means of the coefficient of determination (R²). The isotherms obtained were sigmoid, characteristic of type II. The GAB model presented the best degree of adjustment to the experimental data, with R² values greater than 0.92. We presented the first record of three species bats for Peru based on specimens collected between 2007 and 2014. These are Eumops glaucinus, captured in the rainforest from the center of Peru, Molossus bondae captured in the Pacifico rainforest, and Promops nasutus, captured in the montane forests from southeastern. The present field research focuses on the native potato varieties, Wira pasña and Llumchuy waqachi, cultivated in the Peruvian highlands at roughly 4,000 m above sea level. The objective is to analyze the macho essence of the names assigned to the native potato, names that represent the social manifestation of women in Quechua culture. Participant observation and interviews about the different daily activities of the participants facilitated the research on the macho essence of the names of the native potato in the Quechua culture. The preponderant Quechua oral sources in the Peruvian Andes did not allow us to identify exactly how names associated with the macho way of social life were assigned to the native potatoes. Peru has experienced significant growth but faces challenges with its infrastructure. Despite economic and population growth, competitiveness has not risen at the same pace. The importance of proper roads for economic development and the lack of planning have led the country to confront an infrastructure deficit. This deficit affects connectivity and the quality of the road networks, thereby influencing competitiveness. To bridge this gap, the PPP modality had been used, but challenges were encountered, ranging from the execution of works to maintenance issues. This research study pursues three main objectives: to describe the current landscape of road infrastructure in Peru; to present the Peruvian PPP system and the experience gained through implemented concession contracts; and to identify the critical success factors of Peruvian concessions and propose an evaluation methodology for future contracts. To achieve this, an empirical study of 16 operational road PPPs and a literature review of the most relevant international experiences on success variables for such contracts were conducted. The knowledge society requires universities to prepare professionals with autonomy during training. It was proposed to relate the attitude, motivation, anxiety, and academic performance during the learning process in students at public universities in Peru, comparing the results according to gender, area, and cycle of studies. The study was descriptive-correlational-comparative, quantitative, and cross-sectional. 792 students from two public universities in Peru participated, intentionally selected, applied a duly validated scale to collect information. A correlation (p < .05) was found between attitude, motivation, anxiety, and academic performance during the learning process in students of public universities in Peru, being the statistically significant correlation of direct mean level between academic performance and attitude (.445**) and between academic performance and motivation (.438**), for the variables academic performance and anxiety, a statistically significant correlation of low and inverse level (-.225**) was found. It is concluded that the student who presents a greater attitude towards science has more excellent academic performance, that greater motivation has greater academic performance, and that greater anxiety, lower academic performance. Background. Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that mainly affects women. The diagnosis is made by different methods that identify the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis; therefore, sensitivity, specificity, and performance are essential to guarantee an adequate diagnosis. Our study is aimed at comparing three methods for diagnosing trichomoniasis in patients treated at a hospital in Peru during the year 2018. Methods. We designed a cross-sectional study and enrolled women whose vaginal secretion samples were evaluated by direct examination, Papanicolaou staining, and culture in the Diamond medium. Results. We evaluated 134 women with a mean age of 36.6 ± 12.1 years and a beginning of sexual activity of 18.5 ± 3.0 years. We found leukocyte infiltration, fetid odor, and strawberry cervix in 66.4%, 35.1%, and 18.7%. The prevalence of trichomoniasis by the culture method, direct examination, and Papanicolaou was 32.1, 21.6, and 11.2%. The direct examination's sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic performance (AUC) were 65.1%, 98.9%, and 82.0%, while for the Pap smear, they were 32.6%, 98.9%, and 65.7%%. Conclusion. The culture of T. vaginalis is the gold standard for diagnosing trichomoniasis; however, direct examination is a fast, specific alternative with good diagnostic performance. The Pap test has low sensitivity and should not be used in settings where the prevalence and risk factors for trichomoniasis are high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ecological role and potential management of arthropod-pathogenic fungi (APF) in neotropical forests are of great importance, but they are still little studied. The present study achieves a first estimation of diversity patterns, structure and local ecology of APF in the Amazonian forests of the Cusco and Madre de Dios regions in southern Peru. We sampled 39 localities in five basins, examining 277 specimens, four families and 20 genera with 82 species (40% morphospecies). The most diverse families were Cordycipitaceae with 51 species and Ophiocordicipitaceae (22). Cusco obtained a greater diversity: four families, 18 genera and 58 morphospecies, with the Urubamba and Amarumayu basins having greater diversity (31 and 20 species); for the Madre de Dios basin, there was 28 species. In both regions, the richness values were corroborated by Fisher's Alpha and Chao-1 indexes, the latter identifies Amarumayu and Araza with maximum values. The NMDS analysis showed a good pattern of separation of the two APF communities, although an important group was shared. Elevation was identified as the environmental variable with the strongest influence on diversity and structure. The dominance analysis identified Ophiocordyceps australis and Paraisaria amazonica as hyperdominant, due to their density and distribution. The local ecological patterns in Pongo de Qoñec show that the richness of entomopathogens is largely favored by low understory light, associated with pristine or little-impacted habitats. We conclude that this first approximation of the knowledge of the high diversity of APF in southern Peru is still insufficient, but it demonstrates the importance of their conservation and represents enormous potential for sustainable management. Demographic models of Latin American populations often fail to fully capture their complex evolutionary history, which has been shaped by both recent admixture and deeper-in-time demographic events. To address this gap, we used high-coverage whole-genome data from Indigenous American ancestries in present-day Mexico and existing genomes from across Latin America to infer multiple demographic models that capture the impact of different timescales on genetic diversity. Our approach, which combines analyses of allele frequencies and ancestry tract length distributions, represents a significant improvement over current models in predicting patterns of genetic variation in admixed Latin American populations. We jointly modeled the contribution of European, African, East Asian, and Indigenous American ancestries into present-day Latin American populations. We infer that the ancestors of Indigenous Americans and East Asians diverged ∼30 thousand years ago, and we characterize genetic contributions of recent migrations from East and Southeast Asia to Peru and Mexico. Our inferred demographic histories are consistent across different genomic regions and annotations, suggesting that our inferences are robust to the potential effects of linked selection. In conjunction with published distributions of fitness effects for new nonsynonymous mutations in humans, we show in large-scale simulations that our models recover important features of both neutral and deleterious variation. By providing a more realistic framework for understanding the evolutionary history of Latin American populations, our models can help address the historical under-representation of admixed groups in genomics research and can be a valuable resource for future studies of populations with complex admixture and demographic histories. Drawing from whole-genome data, we infer detailed demographic models for Latin American populations. Our models connect ancient demographic events with recent admixtures, highlighting the often-overlooked Asian migrations in Latin America. Brief alcohol advice offered to patients was shown to be a clinically- and cost-effective intervention to prevent and manage alcohol-related health harm. However, this intervention is not yet optimally implemented in practice. A suggested strategy to improve the implementation of brief alcohol advice is through community actions which would enhance the environment in which primary healthcare providers must deliver the intervention. However, there has been scarce research conducted to date regarding which community actions have most influence on the adoption and implementation of brief alcohol advice. The current protocol presents the development of a package of community actions to be implemented in three Latin American municipalities, in Colombia, Mexico and Peru. The community actions were based on the Institute for Health Care Improvement's framework for going to full scale, and include: (i) involvement of a Community Advisory Board, (ii) involvement of a project champion, (iii) adoption mechanisms, (iv) support systems and (v) a communication campaign. By presenting a protocol for developing community actions with input from local stakeholders, this article contributes to advancing the public health field of alcohol prevention by potentially stimulating the sustainable adoption and implementation of brief alcohol advice in routine practice. Runoff from glacierised Andean river basins is essential for sustaining the livelihoods of millions of people. By running a high-resolution climate model over the two most glacierised regions of Peru we unravel past climatic trends in precipitation and temperature. Future changes are determined from an ensemble of statistically downscaled global climate models. Projections under the high emissions scenario suggest substantial increases in temperature of 3.6 °C and 4.1 °C in the two regions, accompanied by a 12% precipitation increase by the late 21st century. Crucially, significant increases in precipitation extremes (around 75% for total precipitation on very wet days) occur together with an intensification of meteorological droughts caused by increased evapotranspiration. Despite higher precipitation, glacier mass losses are enhanced under both the highest emission and stabilization emission scenarios. Our modelling provides a new projection of combined and contrasting risks, in a region already experiencing rapid environmental change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microcontrollers such as Arduino have been increasingly used by researchers to create and customise their own tools. In geography, microcontrollers are frequently used to design data loggers for monitoring purposes. We reviewed the use of Arduino in physical geography to unravel the opportunities and challenges of using off‐the‐shelf tools in research. We conducted a literature review, putting the retrieved information in perspective with our experimental work in mountainous and riverine landscapes in Chile and Peru. We show that the low cost and versatility of Do It Yourself (DIY) data loggers open research opportunities, extending the range of application of their expensive commercial counterparts. The possibility of connecting Arduino to a wide range of sensors, actuators, and wireless communication devices has helped to monitor rivers, glaciers, lakes, ice‐waves, caves, and landslides, improving the temporal and spatial resolution of data collected in critical environments. Low‐cost sensors have been extensively compared against expensive alternatives with good results, although they require thorough testing before field deployment due to the common existence of defective equipment. Building research equipment has several challenges. DIY data loggers might not be unconditionally accepted by environmental agencies, partially restricting their use to educational and research purposes. Failures in data loggers can be difficult to track, since they might be related to coding, electronic assemblage, or inadequate housing to withstand outdoor use. Yet, Arduino‐based data loggers have helped scientists around the world in different stages of their career, especially in scarcely funded research endeavours. Since the number of drugs based on natural products (NPs) represents a large source of novel pharmacological entities, NPs have acquired significance in drug discovery. Peru is considered a megadiverse country with many endemic species of plants, terrestrial, and marine animals, and microorganisms. NPs databases have a major impact on drug discovery development. For this reason, several countries such as Mexico, Brazil, India, and China have initiatives to assemble and maintain NPs databases that are representative of their diversity and ethnopharmacological usage. We describe the assembly, curation, and chemoinformatic evaluation of the content and coverage in chemical space, as well as the physicochemical attributes and chemical diversity of the initial version of the Peruvian Natural Products Database (PeruNPDB), which contains 280 natural products. Access to PeruNPDB is available for free (https://perunpdb.com.pe/). The PeruNPDB's collection is intended to be used in a variety of tasks, such as virtual screening campaigns against various disease targets or biological endpoints. Background: A high frequency of primary central nervous system (CNS) sarcomas was observed in Peru. This article describes the clinical characteristics, biological characteristics, and outcome of 70 pediatric patients. Methods: Data from 70 pediatric patients with primary CNS sarcomas diagnosed between January 2005 and June 2018 were analyzed. DNA methylation profiling from 28 tumors and gene panel sequencing from 27 tumors were available. Results: The median age of the patients was 6 years (range, 2‐17.5 years), and 66 of 70 patients had supratentorial tumors. DNA methylation profiling classified 28 of 28 tumors as primary CNS sarcoma, DICER1 mutant. DICER1 mutations were found in 26 of 27 cases, TP53 mutations were found in 22 of 27 cases, and RAS‐pathway gene mutations (NF1, KRAS, and NRAS) were found in 19 of 27 tumors, all of which were somatic (germline control available in 19 cases). The estimated incidence in Peru was 0.19 cases per 100,000 children (<18 years old) per year, which is significantly higher than the estimated incidence in Germany (0.007 cases per 100,000 children [<18 years] per year; P <.001). Patients with nonmetastatic disease (n = 46) that were treated with a combination therapy had a 2‐year progression‐free survival (PFS) rate of 58% (95% CI, 44%‐76%) and a 2‐year overall survival rate of 71% (95% CI, 57%‐87%). PFS was the highest in patients treated with chemotherapy with ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide (ICE) after upfront surgery followed by radiotherapy and ICE (2‐year PFS, 79% [59%‐100%], n = 18). Conclusions: Primary CNS sarcoma with DICER1 mutation has an aggressive clinical course. A combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy seems beneficial. An underlying cancer predisposition syndrome explaining the increased incidence in Peruvian patients has not been identified so far. Lay Summary: A high incidence of primary pediatric central nervous system sarcomas in the Peruvian population is described.Using sequencing technologies and DNA methylation profiling, it is confirmed that these tumors molecularly belong to the recently proposed entity "primary central nervous system sarcomas, DICER1 mutant."Unexpectedly, DICER1 mutations as well as all other defining tumor mutations (TP53 mutations and RAS‐pathway mutations) were not inherited in all 19 patients where analyzation was possible.These tumors have an aggressive clinical course.Multimodal combination therapy based on surgery, ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide chemotherapy, and local radiotherapy leads to superior outcomes. The incidence of primary central nervous system sarcomas with DICER1 mutations is high in the Peruvian population, but it is not associated with the DICER1 cancer predisposition syndrome. We present the magnetic, structural and 57Fe Mossbauer characterization of soils collected from an ancient mercury contaminated city named Huancavelica in Peru. The characterization results indicate that silicates and carbonates are the main mineralogical constituents in the samples. In addition, 57Fe Mössbauer spectra at room temperature reveal, the presence of two components: a magnetic component related to magnetic Fe-oxides (magnetite, hematite, goethite) and a high non-magnetic component related to Fe+3 in high spin configuration and tetrahedral coordination in silicates. The magnetization measurements present screening of paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic signals, typical from soils containing different silicates and iron minerals. Remarkably the Verwey and Morin transitions corresponding to magnetite and hematite, respectively, are screened by the paramagnetic signal corresponding to the major silicate components in the samples. Overall, the soils are mainly composed of crystalline and amorphous silicates, calcites and iron bearing which are typical from Andean soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most ecological studies of chiropteran diets report that phyllostomid bats of the subfamilies Stenodermatinae, Carolliinae, and Rhinophyllinae feed principally on fruits. Nevertheless, under certain circumstances, some species can consume a considerable amount of other food resources (nectar/pollen, leaves, and arthropods) as dietary complements to meet their nutritional requirements. We found a relatively high consumption of arthropods by frugivorous phyllostomids as a result of an analysis of feces from a bat community in a lowland forest of northeastern Peru during the dry season. A total of 290 bats (30 species) were captured, from which 188 were frugivorous phyllostomids (13 species). Fecal samples with arthropod remnants were obtained from bats of the genera Artibeus, Carollia, Sturnira, and Rhinophylla, which corresponded to 45% of the samples obtained from the complete assemblage of frugivorous phyllostomids. For three Artibeus species (A. lituratus, A. obscurus, and A. planirostris), arthropods were found in half or more of their fecal samples. This relatively high consumption of arthropods did not significantly differ between male and female frugivorous bats. Yersinia ruckeri causes important economic losses for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms worldwide. This bacterial disease is likely the most common among trout in Peru; however, no commercial vaccine is available nationally, which is, in part, due to a lack of information on the bacterium. The aim of the current study was to characterize 29 Y. ruckeri isolates sampled from seven cage‐reared farms in the Puno Region, the focal point for aquaculture activities in Peru. For this, samples were taken from fish with clinical signs (i.e. haemorrhages, uni‐ or bilateral exophthalmia, hyphaemia and/or melanosis). Notable among our findings was the existence of both Y. ruckeri biotype 1 (9 isolates) and biotype 2 (20 isolates; negative for sorbitol and Tween 80). The isolates further differed in API profiles 5307100 (21 isolates), 1307100 (4 isolates), 1305100 (2 isolates), 1307120 (1 isolate) and 5305100 (1 isolate), with the main differences being in the tests for lysine decarboxylase, gelatine hydrolysis and D‐saccharose fermentation. Despite these differences, all isolates shared identical ERIC‐PCR and REP‐PCR profiles and belonged to the O1a serotype. Fingerprints were identical to the reference strain CECT 955 (serotype O1a). The information obtained will be used for epidemiological purposes by health authorities and for the development of a vaccine against Y. ruckeri, a prominent request made by fish farmers in Peru. Background Isolated left ventricular apical hypoplasia (ILVAH) is a rare, probably congenital, cardiac condition recently reported in the last two decades. Although most cases are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, some severe and fatal cases have been reported, leading to more efforts for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. We describe the first, and severe, case of this pathology in Peru and Latin America. Case summary A 24-year-old male with a history of long-standing alcohol and illicit drug use presented with symptoms of heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF). Transthoracic echocardiography showed biventricular dysfunction along with spherical left ventricle, abnormal papillary muscles' origin from the left ventricular apex, and an elongated right ventricle wrapping around the deficient left ventricular apex. Cardiac magnetic resonance confirmed these findings and revealed subepicardial fatty replacement at the left ventricular apex. The diagnosis of ILVAH was made. He was discharged from hospital with carvedilol, enalapril, digoxin, and warfarin. Eighteen months later he remains mildly symptomatic at New York Heart Association functional class II without worsening HF nor thrombo-embolism. Discussion This case highlights the usefulness of multimodality non-invasive cardiovascular imaging for accurate diagnosis of ILVAH as well as the importance of close follow-up and treatment of established complications (HF and AF). The location and implementation of establishments of social programs, corresponds to the typology ofsocial welfare, specifically satisfaction in the service. The research aimed to analyze the management of a program through geolocation. The study was conducted in the province of Andahuaylas, Apurimac region, Peru. The methodology was explanatory cross-sectional with a total population sample of 60 collaborators from the Andahuaylas Territorial Unit, Peru. The technique used was the survey and the instrument was the questionnaire whose reliability according to Cronbach's Alpha yielded a value of 0.845 being a highly reliable instrument. The results found that 37.14% of the Program's employees state that their work performance is good; While institutional management had a "sig" value of 0.046, which is less than 0.05 the level of significance, therefore, it can be affirmed that there is a significant relationship between work performance and institutional management of the program. In addition, the Pearson correlation is 0.578 indicates that there is a moderate positive correlation, this implies that if there is no good work performance there will be no good institutional management in a territorial unit. The attributes of nematodes are presented as valuable tools for determining the quality of soil, especially that of mining companies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of nematodes against a stress gradient in a rainy season and a dry season in soils influenced by mining. Thus, field sampling was carried out over 100 m² in triplicate for four types of soils classified according to their uses (pasture, maize cultivation, fig cultivation, and eucalyptus cultivation), and these areas were located on the periphery (500 to 1500 m) of the Ollachea mining community of Puno in Peru; subsequently, the samples were processed in the laboratory to determine edaphic, agrochemical, heavy metal, and microbiological parameters and identify the nematodes. The abiotic stress gradient was determined by a principal component analysis; and through a canonical correlation analysis, the relationships between the abiotic stress gradient and the nematodes were determined. Canonical correlation analysis showed that there were significant correlations: in the rainy season, Helicotylenchus and vanadium (r = 0.99), Globodera and titanium (r = 0.97), and Tylenchus and lead (r = 0.96); in the dry season: Meloidogyne and vanadium (r = 0.99), and Hemicycliophora and lead (r = 0.91). In conclusion, the abiotic stress gradient had a high correlation with bacterivorous, fungivorous, and phytoparasitic nematodes and a low correlation with omnivorous and predatory nematodes, showing the bioindicator capacity of nematodes in relation to stress parameters that impact soil quality. Ichthyomyini, a morphologically distinctive group of Neotropical cricetid rodents, lacks an integrative study of its systematics and biogeography. Since this tribe is a crucial element of the Sigmodontinae, the most speciose subfamily of the Cricetidae, we conducted a study that includes most of its recognized diversity (five genera and 19 species distributed from southern Mexico to northern Bolivia). For this report we analyzed a combined matrix composed of four molecular markers (RBP3, GHR, RAG1, Cytb) and 56 morphological traits, the latter including 15 external, 14 cranial, 19 dental, five soft-anatomical and three postcranial features. A variety of results were obtained, some of which are inconsistent with the currently accepted classification and understanding of the tribe. Ichthyomyini is retrieved as monophyletic, and it is divided into two main clades that are here recognized as subtribes: one to contain the genus Anotomys and the other composed by the remaining genera. Neusticomys (as currently recognized) was found to consist of two well supported clades, one of which corresponds to the original concept of Daptomys. Accordingly, we propose the resurrection of the latter as a valid genus to include several species from low to middle elevations and restrict Neusticomys to several highland forms. Numerous other revisions are necessary to reconcile the alpha taxonomy of ichthyomyines with our phylogenetic results, including placement of the Cajas Plateau water rat (formerly Chibchanomys orcesi) in the genus Neusticomys (sensu stricto), and the recognition of at least two new species (one in Neusticomys, one in Daptomys). Additional work is necessary to confirm other unanticipated results, such as the non-monophyletic nature of Rheomys and the presence of a possible new genus and species from Peru. Our results also suggest that ichthyomyines are one of the main Andean radiations of sigmodontine cricetids, with an evolutionary history dating to the Late Miocene and subsequent cladogenesis during the Pleistocene. This study aims to explore the relationship between digital transformation and circular economy practices in universities. A mixed-method approach was used to collect data from 500 participants comprising faculty, students, and staff of various universities in Peru. Data was collected using an online survey and analyzed using SPSS software. The findings of this study suggest that there is a positive relationship between digital transformation and circular economy practices in universities (r = 0.67,p 0.001). The regression analysis result showed that the level of digital transformation practices in universities significantly positively affected the adoption of circular economy practices (β = 0.61,p < 0.001). The study also highlights the importance of leadership support, stakeholder engagement, and resource availability in adopting circular economy practices. Based on the findings, the study recommends that universities prioritize adopting digital transformation practices and engage with a wide range of stakeholders to create a culture of sustainability. The new processes and changes in education arising from the health situation have increased the number of cases of academic stress in university students. We proposed to compare academic stress in students of public and private universities according to socio-demographic variables. A total of 1463 students from a public university and 5 private universities participated in the study. The study was descriptivecomparative, non-experimental, and a measurement instrument was used to identify the level of academic stress. It was concluded that the level of academic stress presented by the students in general is moderate with a tendency to be high and the self-perception of the university students is high, demonstrating that virtual and blended learning have brought changes to which the students have had to adapt. In conclusion, the study is original and clearly demonstrates the differences in academic stress behavior between public and private universities according to the socio-demographic variables of the students. Background: Peru has some of the worst outcomes worldwide as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; it is presumed that this has also affected healthcare workers. This study aimed to establish whether occupation and other non-occupational variables were risk factors for possible reinfection, hospitalization, and mortality from COVID-19 in cohorts of Peruvian healthcare workers infected with SARS-CoV-2. Methods: Retrospective cohort study. Healthcare workers who presented SARS-CoV-2 infection between March 1, 2020, and August 6, 2021, were included. Occupational cohorts were reconstructed from the following sources of information: National Epidemiological Surveillance System, molecular tests (NETLAB), results of serology and antigen tests (SICOVID-19), National Registry of Health Personnel (INFORHUS), and National Information System of Deaths (SINADEF). The incidence of probable reinfection, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 was obtained in the cohorts of technicians and health assistants, nursing staff, midwives, dentists, doctors, and other healthcare workers. We evaluated whether the occupation and other non-occupational variables were risk factors for probable reinfection, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 using log-binomial and probit binomial models, obtaining the adjusted relative risk (RRAJ). Results: 90,398 healthcare workers were included in the study. Most cases were seen in technicians and health assistants (38.6%), and nursing staff (25.6%). 8.1% required hospitalization, 1.7% died from COVID-19, and 1.8% had probable reinfection. A similar incidence of probable reinfection was found in the six cohorts (1.7–1.9%). Doctors had a higher incidence of hospitalization (13.2%) and death (2.6%); however, they were also those who presented greater susceptibility linked to non-occupational variables (age and comorbidities). The multivariate analysis found that doctors (RRAJ = 1.720; CI 95: 1.569–1.886) had a higher risk of hospitalization and that the occupation of technician and health assistant was the only one that constituted a risk factor for mortality from COVID-19 (RRAJ = 1.256; 95% CI: 1.043–1.512). Conclusions: Peruvian technicians and health assistants would have a higher risk of death from COVID-19 than other healthcare workers, while doctors have a higher incidence of death probably linked to the high frequency of non-occupational risk factors. Doctors present a higher risk of hospitalization independent of comorbidities and age; likewise, all occupations show a similar risk of probable reinfection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
