Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) has increased due to its advantages for academic activities and educational quality. Hence, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have sought to develop strategies to promote curricular and extracurricular activities that favor developing disciplinary and transversal competencies such as complex thinking and its meta-competencies: critical, systemic, scientific, and innovative thinking, oriented to favor problem-solving among students and the academic community. The main objective of this study was to analyze how using OERs in virtual education can promote the development of complex thinking as a transversal competency in higher education. We analyzed the content of 65 educational projects in a webinar aimed at promoting the adoption of OERs in the professional practice of the educational community. Each project had to comply with specific requirements, from the project's identification and description to measuring and evaluating the results and its impact and added value. Once all the projects were reviewed, the responses were classified into defined categories for better presentation; the sub-competency of complex thinking promoted by each project element was identified qualitatively. The results highlight how an OER can, through concrete activities, elicit complex thinking and its sub-competencies in higher education. The present study adds new evidence to the literature regarding boosting OERs as a tool to develop competencies aligned with UNESCO recommendations and contribute to fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals in education.

The present study seeks to identify, describe and explain attitudes towards plagiarism of Business Administration students from two private universities in Arequipa. A qualitative methodology was used and the analysis content technique was applied. The data were obtained from information from the application of an individual interview guide and a focus group guide. Twenty individual interviews and two focus groups were conducted, totaling 20 newly-admitted students (10 women and 10 men). The categories arising from the answers expressed by the participants were: (a) knowledge of the issue, (b) permissive attitude towards plagiarism, (c) plagiarism as a social facilitator, (d) consequences and (e) preventive attitude. The results show that, for those interviewed, plagiarism is defined as the act of "copying the work of others", "cheating" or "stealing". They also concluded that plagiarizing is a common and even institutionalized practice that begins at school and is perfected in the University. Getting good grades is the reason why there are no accusations or discrepancy between students who commit plagiarism and those who do not, since they maintain that plagiarism is not a crime. Finally, the ignorance that you are committing plagiarism, the easy way to do something and fear of failing a course are some of the causes of this cheating action. Among the proposals that the interviewees make to solve this problem is that fact that universities disclose and implement their disciplinary regulations.

This study analyses the attitudes of university students towards unethical behaviour in the individual and organisational environments, and relates these attitudes to tolerance of corruption in their future professional lives. The results show a positive relationship between attitudes towards unethical behaviour in both environments, as well as tolerance towards acts of corruption, based on a virtual perception survey. Despite the general rejection attitude by students of such behaviour and acts, the rejection diminishes as their degree programme progresses. This study contributes to our understanding of the tolerance of university students towards corruption, and to revealing how this attitude could explain tolerance towards this phenomenon in their future professional lives.

The primary focus of dairy farming in the central region of Peru centers on producers. However, there is limited information on how different altitudinal zones, particularly during rainy and dry seasons, affect milk production. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the rainy and dry seasons on the physicochemical properties of milk from Brown Swiss and Holstein cattle. A total of sixty cows were selected for the study, comprising 30 Brown Swiss and 30 Holstein. The study was conducted across two distinct seasons, including rainy and dry seasons. All animals received the same semi-intensive management and were fed ryegrass and balanced feed. Each animal provided 500 ml of milk for analysis in the morning. The milk was transported at a temperature of 2 °C, where they were analyzed with the Lactoscan equipment to evaluate protein, lactose, fat, total solids, milk density, freezing point, salts, and pH. Significant differences were observed in the interaction between Brown Swiss and Holstein breeds across different seasons, including rainy and dry periods. Significant differences were observed in protein content, showing a positive effect in the interaction "rain: Brown" a value of 3.50 ± 0.36, while "rain: Holstein" showed 3.14 ± 0.05. Statistical differences were observed in the interactions for lactose content, with rain: Brown at 4.82% and dry: Holstein at 4.37%. Similarly, there were significant differences in fat content and total solids for rain interaction of rain: Holsten, and dry: Brown. Nevertheless, no differences were observed in terms of milk density, freezing point, salts, and pH. It is concluded that there was an influence of the interaction between breed physiology and seasonal conditions on milk composition. Over the years, an anomaly has been observed in newborn lambs, manifesting itself as a curvature in their posture and a slight dampness in the navel, known by the locals as "pupote". For this reason, the present study was carried out to document and present for the first time to the scientific community an anomaly of the urachus in sheep and its incidence. In the sampling process, five lambs who died of starvation were selected. The specimens were transported to the Animal Health Laboratory of the Faculty of Zootechnics of the National University of Central Peru. Radiographic analyses were carried out there. Then the incidence was found in the collected records. The incidence of the anomaly is an average of 0.825±0.09%. This case highlights the persistence of urachus in newborn lambs, evidenced by the identification of a ligament that establishes a connection between the umbilicus and the liver. Objective: To assess quality of life and explore its associated factors in a group of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis in Peru. Methodology: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of patients with CKD treated at two medical centers in Tacna, Peru; between July and September 2023. We conducted a survey via telephone interviews with eligible patients using the Short Form 36 (SF 36) to assess their quality of life. Results: Of 257 patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis, we successfully interviewed 207 (59.9% males, median age: 62 years, median time on hemodialysis: 3.5 years). In the context of the SF-36 assessment, the dimensions with the lowest scores were physical role (mean: 13.9), emotional role (32.2), and physical function (32.4). Regarding the SF-36 summary scores, the average scores were 42.2 in the mental health domain and 32.0 in the physical health domain. In the adjusted model, the physical health domain score was higher in males (β = 2.7) and those with economic self-sufficiency (β = 3.0) and lower in older adults (β = -2.5). The score in the mental health domain was higher in those with a higher level of education (β = 4.1), in those with economic self-sufficiency (β = 3.8), and in those receiving care at one of the centers included (β: 4.2). Conclusion: Quality of life was affected, particularly in the realms of physical and emotional well-being. Furthermore, both the physical and mental health domains tend to show lower scores among women, older individuals, those lacking economic self-sufficiency, individuals with lower educational levels, and those with comorbidities. This study investigated lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) transfer in three dairy farming areas in the Mantaro river headwaters in the central Peruvian Andes and at varying distances from the mining complex at La Oroya. At each of these sites, the transfer of trace metals from the soil to raw milk was estimated, and a hazard assessment for lead and cadmium was carried out in scenarios of minimum, average, and maximum milk consumption in a Peruvian population aged 2–85. Pb and Cd were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Significantly, the concentrations of lead and cadmium were found to exceed the maximum limits recommended by the World Health Organization, with a positive geospatial trend correlated with the distance from mining activity. Both Pb and Cd were found to be transferred through the soil–pasture–milk pathway, with the primary source of Cd being phosphate-based fertilizers used in pasture improvement. Pb was found to be the most significant contributor to the Hazard Index (HI) with those under 19 years of age and over 60 recording an HI of >1, with infants being the most vulnerable group due to their greater milk consumption in relation to their body weight. This paper is an in-depth study that starts from a preliminary one, where we surveyed 141 ranchers from the town of Coto-Coto in Peru to obtain as much information as possible about the relationship between two economic variables, Activity Cost and Financial Management. Furthermore, we study the correlation of the first one of them with three other economic variables. To do this, we process the survey data using logical operators with the support of the plithogenic statistics theory. These results given in the form of plithogenic values are logically aggregated and were converted to crisp values and studied through the use of statistical tools, specifically Kendall's Tau b. The study of economic variables within the field of cattle farming is of great importance because it allows us to improve the productivity of this economic sector, which is also part of the most accepted human diet worldwide. A substantial advantage in the use of plithogeny is that linguistic values that are more natural for livestock farmers were processed, in addition, uncertainty and indeterminacy were taken into account by the use of neutrosophic numbers. Present study aimed to analyze the physicochemical composition of goat milk based on the type of animal, age, and parity in Chupuro, Junin region in the country of Peru. A total of 24 goats were randomly selected, and divided into two groups: 12 native goats and 12 native goats crossed with Saanen. These groups (G1, G2, and G3) included three age categories (1.8, 2.5, and 3.2 years) and three parity levels (first, second, and third parity). The animals were monitored and fed considering their conversion and nutritional requirements. Before the morning milking, 100 ml of milk was extracted in sterile bottles, followed by agitation for 3 to 5 minutes, and the samples were transported using conservation and cooling techniques in a thermal box with ice cubes. These samples were analyzed in the special laboratory. Measurements of pH, acidity, density, lactose, total solids, fat, and protein were conducted using milk analyzer. The findings for the Criollo breed revealed a pH of 6.35 ± 0.31, a lactose concentration of 4.35%, total solids of 11.62 ± 1.31%, protein content of 4.12 ± 0.35%, and fat content of 3.40 ± 0.91%. In comparison, the Criollo x Saanen crossbreed exhibited a pH of 6.43 ± 0.13%, a lactose concentration of 4.45%, total solids of 12.63 ± 0.92%, protein content of 4.26 ± 0.28%, and fat content of 3.95 ± 0.69%. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in the types of milk from native goats and native goats crossed with Saanen. However, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed in density, lactose, total solids, fat, and protein between groups of different ages and parity levels. Crossbreeding with the Saanen breed is well received in the region, as it serves to improve milk production, with favorable percentages of fat, protein, lactose, and total solids. In this study, we aim to compare the procedural and problem-solving skills of university students during their transition to higher education. A diagnostic test was administered to 374 first-year students at a Peruvian university in March 2023, assessing both their mathematical knowledge and the aforementioned skills. The results reveal that university entrants exhibit a deficient level of mathematical proficiency, with significantly lower scores in problem-solving skills compared to procedural skills. It is noted that while procedural skills are part of problem-solving skills, the discrepancy in scores suggests challenges in the practical application of mathematical knowledge by students. The study sheds light on the situation faced by university entrants in Peru and provides recommendations for improving mathematical skills in higher education. However, it emphasizes the limitation of generalizing the results to all universities due to the limited sample size and the scarcity of research in the field of higher mathematics education in Peru. Disparities based on gender and type of school are observed, indicating that males slightly outperform females in both skills, and students from private schools outperform those from national schools. Activity Cost and Financial Management are two variables of vital importance in livestock production. This paper aims to measure the relationship existing between these two variables within the production of beef cattle in the Coto-Coto Chilca Livestock Fair in Peru. To do this, we selected 141 ranchers from the area to give their opinions regarding the behavior of these two variables. The data were represented with the help of an Indeterminate Likert Scale, to capture the uncertainty and indeterminacy of the respondents' opinion. Survey results were compared for the two variables using a measure of neutrosophic similarities. The present field research focuses on the native potato varieties, Wira pasña and Llumchuy waqachi, cultivated in the Peruvian highlands at roughly 4,000 m above sea level. The objective is to analyze the macho essence of the names assigned to the native potato, names that represent the social manifestation of women in Quechua culture. Participant observation and interviews about the different daily activities of the participants facilitated the research on the macho essence of the names of the native potato in the Quechua culture. The preponderant Quechua oral sources in the Peruvian Andes did not allow us to identify exactly how names associated with the macho way of social life were assigned to the native potatoes. The objective of this research was to consolidate the tourism value chain through the implementation of information technologies in the province of Huanta, Ayacucho region, Peru. The research is applied with a pure experimental design. It resulted in the generation of the web system of the tourist directory of Huanta, mobile application of the directory and 2D video game inspired by tourist sites; these tools are an ally and even more so in a context of pandemic to consolidate the articulation between the actors of the tourism value chain, providing accurate and updated information to the visitor or tourist through the internet and digital channels. The extraction of essential oils in the world is widely used to combat various diseases, and also helps for giving a good taste to food (flavoring condiments) and cosmetics that do not pollute the environment or generate chemicals. Peru is in the top 10 countries with the greatest biological diversity in the world, having an approximate 10% of world flora and endless endemic species, also valuing the citrus fruits having productive of orange, lime, grapefruit, tangerine, and tangelo. Therefore, processes are analyzed and a model for the extraction of essential oil from citrus fruits is developed, through the design of an industrial-scale steam extractor, which establishes the automation of the filling and emptying of the distiller to obtain better results and also automates a closed-loop control for refrigeration, to help the operator to control and supervise the process of refrigeration and water filling using a control panel. The distillation process was analyzed where an average of 1% to 5% of essential oil of citrus fruits was obtained and the development of a control for the supervision of the filling and emptying of the water was analyzed. In this paper we introduce a Neutrosophic (Indeterminate) Control System model based on the well-known Fuzzy Control Systems models, especially Mamdani's. It is applied in the process of automating the extraction of essential oil from citrus fruits. An Indeterminate Control System, like its similar Fuzzy Control System, makes it possible to control the oil production process with the help of natural language. The advantage of the Indeterminate Control System is that it explicitly considers indeterminacy due to the non-homogeneity of the parameters within the system, thus it is more accurate. The purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristics of the Mass Pampay ritual (burying an offering with special objects) of the peasants on the summit of the snow-capped Apu Razuhuillca located in the Andes of Peru at 4,800 meters above sea level as (t,i,f)-Neutrosophic social structure. The essence is to explain the syncretic relationship between the Catholic religion and the ancestral Andean philosophy that has survived over time for generations. The method of study is a survey of the natives and tourists, believer or not in the sacred power of the Apu (Andean God) that provides spiritual security to the pilgrims on special dates of the Andean calendar, which is July 31 of each year, the ceremony on the eve of the Andean custom to the branding of cattle in honor of the feast of “Taita Santiago”. We measure approximately the degree of certainty, ignorance, and contradiction which are present in this tradition as a social phenomenon, which is a pillar in the local culture. Anorectal melanoma is a rare and difficult-to-diagnose highly malignant cancer with a poor prognosis. The treatment usually involves surgery and often includes adjuvants such as radiation therapy and immunotherapy. We present a case of a 77-year-old Peruvian who was eventually diagnosed with this cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, which complicated her treatment and allowed the cancer to spread. Her treatment included abdominoperineal resection, bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy, left internal iliac vein raffia and end colostomy, followed by 3D radiation therapy (50 Gy, 25 sessions) and systemic treatment with nivolumab, all of which were well tolerated. Caring for the environment is a transversal task that concerns all professions, including accounting, with an emphasis on auditing; on the other hand, corporate social responsibility seeks efficiency between environmental, social, and economic aspects. This research aims to determine the relationship between environmental auditing and corporate social responsibility in the Junín Region, Peru. To meet this objective, surveys were applied to a randomly selected sample (121 Chartered Public Accountants) and interviews (12 Auditors attached to the Audit Chapter) as research instruments, the sample was obtained from the members of the College of Public Accountants of Junín, which made it possible through the Concurrent Triangulation Design to apply a holistic vision that allowed to compensate and strengthen the credibility of the investigation. To combine all these statistical results, the Plithogenic Statistic was used as a tool for processing the collected data. One of the advantages offered by the plithogenic theory is the possibility of combining knowledge from different sources, which allows us to capture the holistic and dynamic nature of the phenomena. In this case, there is a phenomenon that responds to different branches of knowledge that overlap in a complex way, such as the environmental and ecological aspect, with the economic-financial aspect, as well as the social and educational aspect, which present contradictory components among themselves. The article analyzes the intergovernmental relations developed during the last 30 years, in the context of an apparent unitary and decentralized State, in Peru. The analysis was carried out from the perspective of local governments. The research was of an interpretive phenomenological type to account for the social imaginary of the mayors regarding centralism, recentralization, conflicts of functions, and competencies between government actors. It was concluded that the construction of a unitary and decentralized State would end up being an illusion because the tendency is towards the recentralization of resources in the central government. We describe a new snake species of the genus Tachymenoides from the scientifically unexplored southern sector of the Otishi National Park in Peru (Region Junín). The single adult male specimen with a total length of 407 mm was obtained in the Pantano la Esperanza swamp of a puna valley at 3248 m a.s.l. The new species has smooth dorsal scales without apical pits in 19/17/15 series, 1 preocular, 2 postoculars, 1 loreal, undivided nasal scale, 2+3 temporals, 139 ventrals, 55 subcaudals, and a divided cloacal scale. In life, the dorsum is pale yellowish brown with scattered black blotches that form a paravertebral stripe (one scale wide) on each side at the posterior half of the body. The flanks are black ventrolaterally (2-3 scales high), followed at the posterior half of the body by a pale yellowish-brown longitudinal stripe of two scales width, bordered dorsolaterally by the black paravertebral stripe. The throat and first 60 mm of the ventral body are pale yellowish tan with black flecks, and a ventrolateral black stripe on each side of the same length, the remaining venter and tail entirely black. The head has dorsally a black stripe from the posterior margins of the postoculars extending over the outside margins of the rostrals over the head scales (2-3 scales in width) and narrowing to 1 scale width on the neck region before ending; laterally, the head has black flecks on the supralabials, and a black stripe extending from postoculars diagonally over parietals over posterior supralabials to the corner of the jaw. The research focuses on the Water Festival (Yarqa Aspiy), an ancient event in the Peruvian Andes, and which, as an Inca activity, survived the extirpation of idolatries by the Spanish colonization. The objective is to determine the importance of ancestral rituals in the communal work of this festival that, by merging with those of the Catholic religion, survives to this day. The participant-observation methodology in the Ccarhuaccoco community allowed us to investigate the details of this ancestral communal activity with its Andean rituals. It is concluded that this activity of Inca origin is in the process of extinction due to the growth of the Evangelical Church, which eradicates idolatry in its community practice. Additionally, thanks to religious tolerance, freedom of belief, and the necessary coexistence of water with the community, the festivity is maintained, although with variations in its ritual. Documentation of plant taxa has long been subject to the temporal and spatial selectivity of professional research expeditions, especially in tropical regions. Therefore, rare and/or narrowly endemic species are sometimes known only from very few and very old herbarium specimens. However, these taxa are very important from a conservation perspective. The lack of observations of living plants and confirmation of the actual occurrence of taxa hinders the planning and implementation of effective conservation measures. Community science networks have recently made tremendous contributions to documenting biodiversity in many regions across the globe. The rediscovery of six species of Nasa (Loasaceae) from Peru and Ecuador primarily via the platform iNaturalist, is reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spectral space of the Andes has an architectural cultural richness based on the construction of shrines with a Christian tendency from Spain. The purpose of the study is to analyze and describe the historical process of the colonial Catholic churches located in the Aymara Altiplano of Peru. The study followed the qualitative parameter of historical documentation, where the colonial origin of the buildings was traced, their singular conceptual designs were established, and their use was examined, to finally explain their permanence in time, since they developed in two transcendental moments: the diachronic history and the systematic description of the characteristics in the current churches. Ecclesiastical sanctuaries such as San Pedro and San Pablo, San Juan Evangelista, Concepcion, and Santa Barbara began their construction in 1560, being the first and the oldest to be constituted by the Spanish, but strictly with functions of Christianizing and the collection of taxes from the indigenous people of the Altiplano. Native potatoes (Solanum tuberosum spp. andigena) have diverse pigments and are cultivated in Peru's high Andean regions; they are characterized by containing bioactive compounds that prevent various degenerative diseases. The study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and sensory quality in chips of native potato clones grown at 3496 m altitude, for which the potatoes were cut into slices and fried in extra virgin olive oil at 180 °C for 200 s. This was determined by proximal analysis, reducing sugars, minerals, color, antioxidant capacity (AC), total phenolic compounds (TPC), and anthocyanins in fresh and chips; an instrumental characterization by FTIR and SEM and sensory tests were also performed. The native potatoes presented low moisture and reduced sugar contents; when frying, their bioactive properties improved, increasing AC, TPC, and trace elements, such as K, Mg, Ca, P, Fe, and Zn. To conclude, fresh clones have high yields in the field and are an essential source of nutrients and bioactive; the salt-free chips of clone B presented better physicochemical properties and greater sensory acceptance, closely followed by clone A. Native potato clones grown in Peru contain bioactive compounds beneficial to human health. This study aimed to optimize the spray-drying nanoencapsulation of native potato phenolic extracts utilizing a central composite design and response surface methodology, obtaining the optimal treatment to an inlet temperature of 120 °C and an airflow of 141 L/h in the nano spray dryer B-90, which allowed maximizing the yield of encapsulation, antioxidant capacity (DPPH), encapsulation efficiency (EE), total phenolic compounds, and total flavonoids; on the other hand, it allowed minimizing hygroscopicity, water activity (Aw), and moisture. Instrumental characterization of the nanocapsules was also carried out, observing a gain in lightness, reddening of the color, and spherical nanoparticles of heterogeneous size (133.09–165.13 nm) with a negative ζ potential. Thermal, infrared, and morphological analyses confirmed the encapsulation of the core in the wall materials. Furthermore, an in vitro release study of phenolic compounds in an aqueous solution achieved a maximum value of 9.86 mg GAE/g after 12 h. Background: Peru had the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases in Latin America. After the first wave, Peru registered more than 900,000 cases of COVID-19 and more than 36,000 confirmed deaths from the disease. Tumbes, a border area with poor sanitation and not enough water, had the fifth highest death rate. The cross-sectional analytic study aimed: a) to assess seroprevalence of COVID-19 after the first wave; b) to assess sociodemographic determinants and symptoms associated with a positive COVID-19 antibody lateral flow test. Methodology/principal findings: We performed this study between November 11th and November 30th, 2020, in an informal settlement in Tumbes. Individuals older than two years were invited to participate in a systematic random sample from one in every four households. Finger-prick blood samples were collected, and a census and symptom survey were applied. Within the chosen house, one adult over 18 years of age was chosen for a PCR-RT molecular test. Overall seroprevalence was 25.59%, adjusted seroprevalence was 24.82% (95%CI 22.49–27.25). Women had higher adjusted seroprevalence (28.03% vs 21.11%; 95% CI 24.83–31.41, p = 0.002). Symptoms as fever (PR 1.89: 95% CI 1.44–2.48, p<0.001), general discomfort (PR 1.67; 95% CI 1.23–2.26, p = 0.001), cough (PR 2.0; 95% CI 1.60–2.50, p<0.001), nasal congestion (PR 1.46; 95% CI 1.03–2.09, p = 0.036), respiratory distress (PR 1.64; 95% CI 1.04–2.56, p = 0.031), headache (PR 1.54; 95% CI 1.09–2.17, p = 0.014), anosmia (PR 1.78; 95% CI 1.01–3.14, p = 0.046) and ageusia (PR 2.31; 95% CI 1.48–3.61, p<0.001) were associated with a positive covid-19 antibody lateral flow test. Conclusions/significance: The COVID-19 transmission and distribution were highlighted by this cross-sectional study. The data will help the Ministry of Health improve its monitoring, surveillance, and monitoring of respiratory community sequelae in the future. Author summary: During the first wave, COVID-19 had devastating effects on developing countries like Peru, which reported more than 900,000 cases of the disease and more than 36,000 confirmed deaths from it. The informal settlements are counted in COVID-19 regional statistics, but they are very different from the rest of the region in terms of sanitation, access to water and sewage, housing conditions, and others. To make good decisions about public health, it is important to understand how the disease is spread in informal settlements. We did an observational, cross-sectional study in Puerto Pizarro, a remote port village in Tumbes, from November 11, 2020, to November 30, 2020, to assess the seroprevalence of COVID-19 after the first wave, as well as the sociodemographic factors and symptoms linked to a positive COVID-19 antibody lateral flow test. 1391 people older than 2 years old were given census and symptom questionnaires. They were also tested for the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (IgG and IgM) in their blood. This study shows an adjusted seroprevalence of 24.82 percent (95% CI 22.49–27.25) posterior to the first wave of COVID-19 in Tumbes. Women had higher adjusted seroprevalence (28.03% vs. 21.11% [95% CI 24.83–31.41], p = 0.002). Extrapolating our adjusted prevalence of 24.82 per 100 persons to Tumbes (N = 251,541), 62,432 people were infected during the first wave, which is too high for adequate primary care in health institutions. Puerto Pizarro's cause-specific mortality rate was 198.49 per 100,000 inhabitants (deaths documented between May and December 2020), which was higher than Tumbes' up to December 2020 (137.6 per 100,000 inhabitants). The presence of mostly symptomatic patients at health care facilities, the limited use of social networks, the scarce availability of eHealth technologies in government institutions, unused emergency telephone numbers, and the fear of dying if referred to the hospital may have led to underreporting cases. Participation of the community in epidemiological surveillance strategies is critical to assisting the Ministry of Health in the future success of the establishment of an eHealth surveillance monitoring program. Despite linguistic diversity being a unique and enriching characteristic of Peru, the situation of native languages and dialectal varieties remains in a state of neglect within the country. Thus, this study aims to identify patterns and trends in the search for information on indigenous, foreign, and dialectal languages in Peru, in order to contribute to the understanding of the perception and appreciation of linguistic diversity in Peruvian society. To this end, a mixed-methods and non-experimental phenomenological design is employed, using Google Trends to analyze and compare search volumes longitudinally. Results reveal that interest in linguistic diversity in Peru varies by region and language, with Quechua being the most searched indigenous language. Additionally, bilingual education is the most popular concept, followed by linguistic discrimination. However, attraction to languages through search queries does not necessarily correspond with an interest in learning them. Therefore, further research is recommended to explore underlying motivations for language interest, as well as possible correlations with socio-economic contexts and international events. Bluetongue virus (BTV) is an arbovirus that is transmitted between domestic and wild ruminants by Culicoides spp. Its worldwide distribution depends on competent vectors and suitable environmental ecosystems that are becoming affected by climate change. Therefore, we evaluated whether climate change would influence the potential distribution and ecological niche of BTV and Culicoides insignis in Peru. Here, we analyzed BTV (n = 145) and C. insignis (n = 22) occurrence records under two shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios (SSP126 and SSP585) with five primary general circulation models (GCMs) using the kuenm R package v.1.1.9. Then, we obtained binary presence–absence maps and represented the risk of transmission of BTV and niche overlapping. The niche model approach showed that north and east Peru presented suitability in the current climate scenario and they would have a decreased risk of BTV, whilst its vector would be stable and expand with high agreement for the five GCMs. In addition, its niche overlap showed that the two niches almost overlap at present and would completely overlap with one another in future climate scenarios. These findings might be used to determine the areas of highest priority for entomological and virological investigations and surveillance in order to control and prevent bluetongue infections in Peru. We exploit the progression of the Peruvian conflict (1980–2000) over time and space to show that individuals' responses to conflict violence are affected by the identity of the perpetrator. We find that a 1 standard deviation increase in exposure to all violence (from government and terrorists) reduces the perception of the importance of voting and the probability of voting by 1.4% and 1.8% (of each variable mean). However, distinguishing by the perpetrator's identity unveils contrasting effects. A 1 standard deviation increase in exposure to government violence reduces the perception of voting importance by 4.8% and reduces participation in civil organizations by 12.8% as well as the perception that democracy works or matters by 4.8% and 3.3%. In contrast, exposure to terrorist violence strengthens social capital, although the size of the effects tends to be smaller. In addition, the period from the late teens to early twenties seems key to influencing later voting behavior, participation, and democratic beliefs. Results are robust to pretrends in the outcome variables, multiple hypothesis testing corrections, and selection into migration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Teacher job satisfaction is an important aspect of academic performance, student retention, and teacher retention. We propose to determine the predictive model of job satisfaction of basic education teachers using machine learning techniques. The original data set consisted of 15,087 instances and 942 attributes from the national survey of teachers from public and private educational institutions of regular basic education (ENDO-2018) carried out by the Ministry of Education of Peru. We used the ANOVA F-test filter and the Chi-Square filter as feature selection techniques. In the modeling phase, the logistic regression algorithms, Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, XGBoost and Decision Trees-CART were used. Among the algorithms evaluated, XGBoost and Random Forest stand out, obtaining similar results in 4 of the 8 metrics evaluated, these are: balanced accuracy of 74%, sensitivity of 74%, F1-Score of 0.48 and negative predictive value of 0.94. However, in terms of the area under the ROC curve, XGBoost scores 0.83, while Random Forest scores 0.82. These algorithms also obtain the highest true-positive values (479 instances) and lowest false-negative values (168 instances) in the confusion matrix. Economic income, satisfaction with life, self-esteem, teaching activity, relationship with the director, perception of living conditions, family relationships; health problems related to depression and satisfaction with the relationship with colleagues turned out to be the most important predictors of job satisfaction in basic education teachers. The purpose of the research is to evaluate and determine the magnitude of the socio-economic impact of artisan charcoal production on the quality of life of the population involved in the Manantay district of the Coronel Portillo province, Ucayali Region. The charcoal production has been a source of income since the wood boom, and this activity is practiced by small entrepreneurs, who were marginalized by pollution in urban areas of the Manantay District, hence, they choose to produce artisanal charcoal which is subject of the present study, for which it was carried out to estimate the trend of the productivity of artisanal charcoal in the district of Manantay, also, to determine the level of quality of life of the population involved in the production of artisanal charcoal and to determine the socio-economic impact of the artisanal production of charcoal in the district. We use a random sample consisting in 45 producers of charcoal, which responded a query based on a Likert scale. The results were represented in contingency tables and were processed with the support of the coefficient of Chi Square of Pearson. From the results obtained it is concluded that there is a socio-economic impact of the production of artisanal charcoal on the quality of life of the population involved in the Manantay district. We describe a new species of Proctoporus from the scientifically unexplored southern sector of the Otishi National Park (Region Cusco) in Peru, on the basis of molecular and morphological characters. Seven type specimens were obtained from six localities between 3241–3269 m a.s.l. within a radius of ca. 1.5 km in a Puna valley. Nine adult specimens (four males, five females) from Chiquintirca (Region Ayacucho, ca. 85 km airline from the type locality) are considered referred specimens. Males of the new species have a snout–vent length of 41.3–53.9 mm ( x ¯ = 46.7, n = 6), females have a snout–vent length of 43.6–52.6 mm ( x ¯ = 48.1, n = 8). The new species has dorsal scales striated, four supraoculars, four anterior supralabials, loreal and prefrontal scales absent, two pairs of genials (rarely one or three), three rows of pregulars, and five to seven femoral pores in males (absent in females). Sexual dimorphism is evident in the ventral coloration: males have neck, chest, and belly dark gray to black, whereas females have neck, chest, and belly pale gray with a diffuse dark gray fleck in the center of each scale, and an orange iris with a fringed pupil in both sexes. Background. The characterization and evaluation of the nutritional composition of lupine (Lupinus mutabilis) seeds has a long history. However, the determination of the fatty acid profile has only been carried out in a few varieties. Objective. This study determined the fatty acid profile and chemical composition of the oil of six varieties of lupine consumed in Peru. Methods. The extraction of oil from each lupine variety was carried out using the Soxhlet method. Fatty acids, moisture, acidity index, free fatty acids, peroxide value, iodine value, saponification value, and density were determined using official AOAC methods. Results. In general, the average values of saturated fatty acids are lower than those of unsaturated fatty acids. Among the monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), oleic acid (C18:1) was the most representative, with values ranging from 41.83% to 54.33%. The "Andenes" variety showed an average oleic acid value of 54.60% compared to the other varieties. The composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was dominated by linoleic acid (C18:2), and the variety "Cholo fuerte" reported higher values (34.70%) compared to the other varieties. Likewise, the highest average PUFA was 36% and was observed in the "Cholo fuerte" variety. The concentration of linolenic fatty acid (C18:3) ranges from 2.1% for the "Andenes" variety to 2.9% for the common lupine. Additionally, the mean content of linolenic (ω-6) and linoleic (ω-3) acids was 2.33 and 30.89% (13 : 1 ratio), respectively, with the consequent ratio of ω-6/ω-3 fatty acids at the mean level of 0.08. All physicochemical characteristics of lupine seed oil are in accordance with the requirements for edible oils. Conclusion. The paper discusses the utility of constructing causal models in focus groups. This was experienced as a complement to an in-depth ethnographic research on the differing perceptions of caretakers and health professionals on child's growth and development in Peru and Bolivia. The rational, advantages, difficulties and necessary adaptations of combining the two techniques are discussed on the basis of concrete examples. Authors conclude that the building of a causal model in a focus group session can be useful in comparing lay etiologies of diseases as perceived by different categories of caretakers and health professionals and in identifying specific health risks faced by children. Causal model building in a focus group can help renew discussions and participants' interest but its use is only justified when the study concerns the perception of the causality of a given phenomenon. Background: Probiotics in allergic rhinitis (AR) have shown improvement in clinical and quality of life scores, whereas the role of synbiotics in the treatment of AR has been poorly investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of synbiotics in children with AR. Methods: An observational, prospective cohort study of pediatric outpatients with AR from a private medical center in Peru (2021) was conducted. At baseline, patients who were prescribed synbiotics during routine and those who were not (controls) recruited and followed up on Days 30, 60, and 90 of follow‐up. Clinical efficacy was assessed with differences in Visual Analogous Scale (VAS), Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS), Rhinitis Control Assessment Test (RCAT), and the Pediatric Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (PRQLQ) scores between groups at follow‐up. Mean differences ± standard deviation (SD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) are reported. Results: Two hundred and fifteen participants were analyzed. Compared to controls (n = 115), those who used synbiotics (n = 100) had significantly lower VAS (mean difference 1.3; 95% CI: 0.8–1.8), TNSS (mean difference 1.1; 95% CI: 0.5–1.7) and higher RCAT scores and PRQLQ scores (mean difference 2.2; 95% CI: −3.3 to −1.2) and (mean difference 7.0; 95% CI: 3.1–10.9), respectively, at Day 90 of follow‐up Conclusions: This paper reports significant improvement in clinical (VAS, RCAT, TNSS) and quality of life (PRQLQ) scores of small and large sizes, respectively. The internet is the technological development most used by human beings, since it facilitates communication in social and productive processes, however, inappropriate use can cause health problems conditioned by factors associated with the intensity of use and types of content. Therefore, this qualitative-phenomenological research seeks to contrast the emotional regulation of connectivity and vulnerability factors for adolescent cyber abuse in Peru. The result shows that the existence of emotional regulation -especially parental- allows us to identify significant predictors that lead to fighting addiction, implying a decrease in exposure to risk factors that would potentially condition the adolescent's vulnerability to cyberbullying, grooming, sexting, phishing, among other that could negatively impact the development of personality. Background and objectives: Sleep disorders are a common public health problem among college students. The objective of this study was to evaluate sleep quality and its associated factors in medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional analytical study—we conducted a secondary analysis of the survey "Nomophobia in medical students in Peru" database between 2020 and 2021. Sleep disturbances were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). To evaluate associated factors, crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Results: We analyzed data from 3139 participants from 18 cities in Peru (61.1% were women, median age: 22 years). 43.4% had a quality of sleep that could require medical attention; the PSQI dimension with the highest score was daytime dysfunction. The poor sleep quality was associated with symptoms of anxiety (aPR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.27–1.72), depression (aPR: 2.03; 1.72–2.39), or nomophobia (aPR: 1.28; 1.09–1.51). Conclusions: Sleep disorders were a common problem among Peruvian medical students and were associated with anxiety, depression, or nomophobia symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As in many other countries, Peru has the Water Quality Standard (WQS) as the primary tool for managing and diagnosing water resources. An analysis of variable by variable was applied to define water quality as poor or good by setting concentration limits. A second group of tools commonly used are Biotic Indexes based on tolerance of benthic macroinvertebrates to pollution, that reflect the impacts caused by a group of variables, even though they cannot identify which variables determine the viability of the ecosystem. This research proposes to include the Stable States approach to evaluate the ecological integrity in central‐Andes rivers to explore an alternative approach with the capacity to represent a broader number of factors through multivariate analyses. A ten‐year database of biological, physical, and chemical variables measured in five Andean Rivers was evaluated. Our results suggest these rivers fluctuate into two seasonal stable states (wet and dry season), accounting for approximately 41% of the system variability. The wet season stable state was defined by high levels of suspended solids and turbidity, coliform, phosphorus, and some metals. During the dry season, the key variables were dissolved solids, barium, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Likewise, there seems to be a third alternative state influenced by human pressures driven by organic pollution variables that exceed the WQS. Regarding water quality, the concentrations of coliforms, phosphorus, and lead usually exceeded the limits in two stations, but not every year. The avocado fruit is an agro-industrial product with high export demand in Peru due to its sensory and nutritional qualities, which can be affected during storage. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application of a coating formulated with potato starch (Solanum tuberosum ssp andigena), nopal mucilage (Opuntia ficus indica), and pectin on the physicochemical and physiological properties during the storage of Fuerte and Hass avocados. Samples were taken in their harvest state from the plantation in "Occobamba", which is cultivated by the Avocado Producers Association in Chincheros, Apurímac, Peru. Physicochemical properties (titratable acidity, pH, total soluble solids) and physiological properties (weight loss, firmness, and color L* a* b*) were determined during 20 days of storage at 20 °C. The elaborated films present high transparency and low aw values. In the coated avocado of the Hass and Fuerte varieties, acidity and total soluble solids decreased significantly (p-value < 0.05) during the storage time. Weight loss and firmness of coated fruits decrease to a lesser extent. Luminosity L*, color index, and color variation showed better attributes for the coated samples. The use of coatings made with potato starch, nopal mucilage, and pectin allows the physicochemical and physiological properties of avocado fruits to be maintained for a longer time during storage. Clay is a decomposed sedimentary rock consisting of aggregates of hydrated aluminum silicates, from the decomposition of rocks containing feldspar, such as granite. Clay has plastic properties, which means that by moistening it can be easily modeled. When dried, it becomes firm and when subjected to high temperatures, chemical reactions occur that, among other changes, cause the clay to become a permanently rigid material, called ceramics. Clays have wide use in the pottery industry, construction, and winemaking, among many other applications of economic and social importance. This research aims to classify clays according to different types of clays existing in the soils of Pucallpa, Peru, through the use of plithogenic sets. This novel theory was selected because it allows us to represent multiple attributes where each consists of different possible elements, including indeterminacy and vagueness. The classification of different types of clay is not simple; some of its physicochemical characteristics are common to more than one type of this mineral. To the knowledge of the authors, it is the first time that plithogenic sets are used in the classification of minerals. The objective of the study is to analyze the level of environmental education and ethics in civil engineering programs in order to propose transversal contents within the curriculum. To evaluate the presence of environmental issues, a Likert scale questionnaire was applied to 260 students and a dichotomous scale to 42 professors and directors of universities in the Puno region. The results indicate that the students have a medium level of environmental ethics in knowledge and skills, while in attitudes and values they have a high level. Regarding the application of the environmental theme by the professors, there is a medium level in the physical, pedagogical and didactic areas and a high level in the academic area; consequently, it is necessary to establish environmental policies explicitly in the strategic plans and study curricula so that future professionals assume their environmental commitment at the time of executing civil infrastructure projects. The increasing prevalence and dissemination of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales represent a serious concern for public health. We studied the genetic features of a multidrug-resistant isolate of high-risk clone ST147 Klebsiella pneumoniae coharboring mcr-1 and blaNDM-1 recovered from a human clinical urine sample in 2017 in Peru. Whole-genome sequencing and conjugation assays identified mcr-1 and blaNDM-1 genes on two different conjugative plasmids, which belong to IncI2 and IncFIB/HI1B incompatibility groups, respectively. The presence of blaCTX-M-15 (in the studied isolate, located on the chromosome) and mutations in GyrA S83I and ParC S80I were detected, as expected for ST147. In addition, other β-lactamases (blaTEM-26 and blaOXA-1) and PMQR (qnrE2 and aac(6′)-Ib-cr) among several resistance determinants were identified. The coexistence not previously described of these genes in the same high-risk clone is a cause for serious concern that supports the need for implementation of genomic surveillance studies.
