Outreach can and should exemplify the characteristics typical of any scholarly work if it is to create change in our communities and universities. Glassick, Huber, and Maeroff's insight on the standards for scholarly work are reflected in the processes commonly used to implement outreach. Boyer challenges us to think of scholarship as a communal process. The uniqueness of outreach is that as an activity, it is a communal process. By rooting outreach in scholarship, its quality is enhanced and the work within the academy is enriched. The authors draw from the work of leading authors, their experiences in leading outreach initiatives, their role in planning the Outreach Scholarship 2002 conference, and the articles featured in this journal to share insights on outreach as scholarship.

What are the long term consequences associated with serving as a state FFA officer? Using a semi-structured interview format, selected state FFA officers from a twenty year time span were interviewed to assess their perceptions of and assets attributed to their experiences as a state officer. Results indicated that past state officers, regardless of when they served, noted positive leadership development, personal growth, and a heightened level of community awareness. Additionally, experiences and subsequent engagement related to their term confirmed four key features of positive adolescent development, which are, a sense of industry and competence; a sense of identity; a sense of control over one's fate; and connectedness to others (CSR Inc, 1997).

A 75% response from a survey of 161 agricultural, 131 home economics, 86 auto mechanics, and 70 carpentry teachers identified the best indicator of faculty commitment to vocational student organizations to be membership rate. Faculty in vocational schools to which students must be transported for part of the school day may be less committed. (SK)

Since 2000, wild black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) has produced erratic seed crops, especially in the Allegheny National Forest where poor seed production has been implicated in difficulties with black cherry regeneration in forest stands. Given that black cherry is insect pollinated and unable to produce viable seed from self-pollination, a reduction in seed crops could be due to a pollination deficit; however, its key pollinators are unknown. Identifying the pollinators and factors that influence pollinator abundance and fidelity is critical for supporting and enhancing seed production for this valuable timber species. Over a two-year period in developed, semideveloped, and forested areas in Pennsylvania, we identified the potential pollinators of black cherry and examined how their abundance, along with several other abiotic and biotic factors, influenced viable seed production. We found that andrenid (Andrenidae: Hymenoptera) bees are likely the most important pollinators. The proportion of viable seeds increased as the number of andrenids increased, and these ground nesting bees were most abundant on forest edges, highlighting this habitat's potential to support pollination services. Andrenids carried an average of 347-fold more black cherry pollen than flies and 18-fold more than halictid (Halictidae: Hymenoptera) bees. We did not find a significant relationship between the abundance of any other taxa besides andrenids and viable seed production. Black cherry flowers also provide resources for natural enemies such as the economically important parasitoid of Popillia japonica Newman (Scarabaeidae: Coleoptera), Tiphia vernalis Rohwer (Tiphiidae: Hymenoptera), which was observed feeding on black cherry nectar in this study. Organic grain producers are interested in interseeding cover crops into corn (Zea mays L.) in regions that have a narrow growing season window for post-harvest establishment of cover crops. A field experiment was replicated across 2 years on three commercial organic farms in Pennsylvania to compare the effects of drill- and broadcast-interseeding to standard grower practices, which included post-harvest seeding cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) at the more southern location and winter fallow at the more northern locations. Drill- and broadcast-interseeding treatments occurred just after last cultivation and used a cover crop mixture of annual ryegrass [Lolium perenne L. ssp. multiflorum (Lam.) Husnot] + orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) + forage radish (Raphanus sativus L. ssp. longipinnatus). Higher mean fall cover crop biomass and forage radish abundance (% of total) was observed in drill-interseeding treatments compared with broadcast-interseeding. However, corn grain yield and weed suppression and N retention in late-fall and spring were similar among interseeding treatments, which suggests that broadcast-interseeding at last cultivation has the potential to produce similar production and conservation benefits at lower labor and equipment costs in organic systems. Post-harvest seeding cereal rye resulted in greater spring biomass production and N retention compared with interseeded cover crops at the southern location, whereas variable interseeding establishment success and dominance of winter-killed forage radish produced conditions that increased the likelihood of N loss at more northern locations. Additional research is needed to contrast conservation benefits and management tradeoffs between interseeding and post-harvest establishment methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An estimated 390,000 to 520,000 individuals with severe aphasia (IWSA) currently live in the United States. IWSA experience profound social isolation, which is associated with a wide range of negative health outcomes, including mortality. Treatments for severe aphasia frequently focus on compensatory communication approaches or a discrete communication act rather than on participation-based treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether IWSA demonstrated improved performance on standardized language measures, patient-reported outcome measures, and connected speech samples as a result of client-centered conversation group treatment. Results of assessments conducted at pretreatment, posttreatment, and maintenance intervals were variable across participants. All participants demonstrated improvement in at least one of the outcome measures considered. Importantly, none of these measures fully captured how IWSA were able to convey their thoughts in supported conversation. The results lend support for the use of conversation treatment for, and for further study in, this subpopulation of individuals with aphasia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A consultant on an endless road trip, Jeff Kallay travels the nation visiting colleges and universities that hire him to conduct a "campus visit audit." After each tour, he discusses his first impressions with admissions officials. Later he sends them a detailed report, with recommendations covering the logistical aspects of visits, such as parking and signage. He also considers aesthetics, right down to the dust bunnies he finds in stairwells. But beauty is not Mr. Kallay's main concern. His business cards identify him as an "experience evangelist," and wherever he goes he preaches the gospel of good vibrations. He believes that intangibles--like listening and eye contact--do more than any dormitory or library can to make a student's visit memorable. In his evaluations, Mr. Kallay rates the experiential qualities of each visit. Known as the "golden walk," the campus visit is a ritual demonstrated by research to significantly influence a prospective applicant's decision to apply to a college--and an accepted student's decision to enroll. Unfortunately, says Mr. Kallay, many campus visits are bland and predictable, frequently because colleges try to promote themselves as places with everything for everyone. Campus visits often seem like exercises in sameness, leaving students and parents starved for something real. Kallay urges colleges to clearly express what they are--and what they are not. The article discusses an unknown disease which struck residents of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1793. The disease coincided with a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and its victims exhibited similar symptoms. According to the authors, the disease cannot be definitively diagnosed but may have been yellow fever. It is suggested that malaria may also have been present in the community. Details related to contemporary beliefs about the disease, including the theory that it was caused by marsh effluvia from a mill dam, are presented. Other topics include hepatitis A, dengue, typhoid fever, and leptospirosis.

The article discusses the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania ruling on Pennsylvania Power Co. v. Township of Pine, stating that a municipality does not have authority over utility implementation. The legal and practical effect the majority and dissenting opinions have on the process for a property owner to build, modify, or subdivide certain aspects of the owner's property is examined. The process of how the different authorities determined who should have authority over the placement of utility lines and, if remanded, to which authority, is discussed.

Diverse groups in urban settings demonstrate poor participation in health care and low levels of literacy. It is possible the method of health information delivery (eg, spoken vs. written) in these settings could impact health care related communication and understanding, though little is known on this topic. The objective of this study was to uncover the advantages and disadvantages of spoken survey administration in a low-income urban setting. The data for this study were collected via spoken survey with eighty patients in 9 surgery clinics at Temple University Hospital (TUH) in North Philadelphia. Survey responses were coded into various groups until categories and relationships among them emerged to produce themes relevant in demonstrating the advantages and disadvantages of spoken survey. 69% (55) of respondents preferred a spoken survey format. Of the 55 patients who preferred the spoken format, 33% (18) possessed some level of college education and 47% (26) had finished high school. Of the 23 patients who primarily spoke Spanish or another language at home, 78% (18) preferred a spoken interview format. Overall, 53% (42) of patients experienced at least 1 instance of poor understanding throughout the survey. Patients were better able to understand questions in a spoken survey compared to written ones that they had completed in the past due to the opportunity for surveyors to explain questions when needed. It is possible that question explanation is necessary in low-income urban settings due to low-literacy levels or improved feelings of survey intimacy and efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Financial and educational barriers significantly impact low socioeconomic status racial and ethnic minority groups in their pursuit of health care, though less is known about the interplay of these factors in the pursuit of surgical care. This study was designed to uncover the challenges to patient understanding and compliance with pre- and postsurgical clinical advice in low-income urban environments. The data for this study were collected in spoken survey with eighty patients in 9 surgery clinics at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. Survey responses were coded into various groups until categories emerged. Relationships among categories were identified to generate themes and subthemes. Key facilitators of patient understanding and compliance were physician likeability and communication. Eighty (100%) patients reported that the physician always treated them with respect, which was important in their interpretation of their experience with the physician. Eighteen (23%) patients identified a language other than English as their primary language and 57 (71%) patients completed high school or less schooling, which likely influenced their communication with the physician. Eighty (100%) patients expressed that the physician always explained things in a way they could understand, focusing on clarity and thoroughness. Challenges to patient understanding and compliance were finances and social resources. Patients noted difficulty paying for medical care and a lack of support at home. Agency could facilitate use of surgical care while a lack thereof could challenge motivation. Ultimately, these themes showed how patients in this environment interact with surgical care. A mail survey was conducted in 2000 to determine awareness and use of integrated pest management (IPM) practices by nurseries in Pennsylvania. Survey participants were randomly selected from the Pennsylvania Dept. of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Industry, list of certified nurseries. Participants answered questions pertaining to awareness of common practices, frequency that IPM practices were employed, and specifics on monitoring and pest management decision-making processes. Responses were analyzed by Cluster Analysis (SPSS Inc., Chicago), which resulted in the formation of three distinct segments. The segments were labeled "IPM Savvy" (nursery managers who were more likely to employ IPM practices); "Part-time IPMers" (nursery managers who employed some IPM strategies and were interested in future adoption of IPM practices); and "Reluctant IPMers" (nursery managers who were least likely to employ IPM strategies). The "Part-time IPMers" and "Reluctant IPMers" segments represent a substantial part of the industry (51%), who continues to have concerns about the cost, efficacy, and implementation of IPM practices into their businesses. Overall, Pennsylvania growers are aware of IPM practices; however, maintaining permanent records of pests identified and pest management strategies employed remain low. Continued education is warranted to enhance pest monitoring skills and record keeping along with demonstrable evidence to the cost effectiveness and marketing benefits that the implementation of IPM practices offer the nursery operators.
