Insufficient freshwater recharge and climate change resulted in seawater intrusion in most of the coastal aquifers in Pakistan. Coastal aquifers represent diverse landcover types with varying spectral properties, making it challenging to extract information about their state hence, such investigation requires a combination of geospatial tools. This study aims to monitor erosion along the major coastal aquifers of Pakistan and propose an approach that combines data fusion into the machine and deep learning image segmentation architectures for the erosion and accretion assessment in seascapes. The analysis demonstrated the image segmentation U-Net with EfficientNet backbone achieved the highest F1 score of 0.93, while ResNet101 achieved the lowest F1 score of 0.77. Resultant erosion maps indicated that Sandspit experiencing erosion at 3.14 km2 area. Indus delta is showing erosion, approximately 143 km2 of land over the past 30 years. Sonmiani has undergone substantial erosion with 52.2 km2 land. Miani Hor has experienced erosion up to 298 km2, Bhuri creek has eroded over 4.11 km2, east Phitii creek over 3.30 km2, and Waddi creek over 3.082 km2 land. Tummi creek demonstrates erosion, at 7.12 km2 of land, and East Khalri creek near Keti Bandar has undergone a measured loss of 5.2 km2 land linked with quantified reduction in the vertical sediment flow from 50 (billion cubic meters) to 10 BCM. Our analysis suggests that intense erosions are primarily a result of reduced sediment flow and climate change. Addressing this issue needs to be prioritized coastal management and climate change mitigation framework in Pakistan to safeguard communities. Leveraging emerging solutions, such as loss and damage financing and the integration of nature-based solutions (NbS), should be prioritized for the revival of the coastal aquifers. Wetlands provide vital ecological and socioeconomic services but face escalating pressures worldwide. This study undertakes an integrated spatiotemporal assessment of the multifaceted vulnerabilities shaping Khinjhir Lake, an ecologically significant wetland ecosystem in Pakistan, using advanced geospatial and machine learning techniques. Multi-temporal optical remote sensing data from 2000 to 2020 was analyzed through spectral water indices, land cover classification, change detection and risk mapping to examine moisture variability, land cover modifications, area changes and proximity-based threats over two decades. The random forest algorithm attained the highest accuracy (89.5%) for land cover classification based on rigorous k-fold cross-validation, with a training accuracy of 91.2% and a testing accuracy of 87.3%. This demonstrates the model's effectiveness and robustness for wetland vulnerability modeling in the study area, showing 11% shrinkage in open water bodies since 2000. Inventory risk zoning revealed 30% of present-day wetland areas under moderate to high vulnerability. The cellular automata–Markov (CA–Markov) model predicted continued long-term declines driven by swelling anthropogenic pressures like the 29 million population growth surrounding Khinjhir Lake. The research demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating satellite data analytics, machine learning algorithms and spatial modeling to generate actionable insights into wetland vulnerability to guide conservation planning. The findings provide a robust baseline to inform policies aimed at ensuring the health and sustainable management and conservation of Khinjhir Lake wetlands in the face of escalating human and climatic pressures that threaten the ecological health and functioning of these vital ecosystems. Cities are complex and dynamic entities in close proximity of people, implying multi temporal observations to analyse and understand the urban context. At present, open-source data and geospatial intelligence are becoming the important means of exploring, monitoring and predicting urban status of area growth and population increase. In last few decades, unemployment and absence of infrastructures in the rural areas promoted the unplanned and haphazard urbanization across the urban centres in Pakistan. This study focuses on exploring the potential of open-source/freely available datasets for city mapping and monitoring spatially. The study gives a spatial perspective of rapidly growing cities of Pakistan using Google Earth Engine to classify Landsat images over last four decades, and discovers sprawl patterns across cities. The study works out that the built-up area is significantly increasing with population growth over four decades and there is a strong positive correlation between population growth and built-up expansion. Using Open-Source Data (Landsat images and LandScan data), this study has offered a technical solution of Google Earth Engine-supported analysis of statistics and machine learning to spatially monitoring the population change and urban growth of four major Pakistan cities. Aside from Ramsar Convention awareness programs, the concept of wetlands is mostly ignored in developing countries. Wetland ecosystems are essential to hydrological cycles, ecosystem diversity, climatic change, and economic activity. Under the Ramsar Convention, there are 2414 wetlands that are internationally recognized, and Pakistan is home to 19 of them. The major goal of this study is to use the satellite image technology to locate Pakistan's underutilized wetlands (Borith, Phander, Upper Kachura, Satpara, and Rama Lakes). The other goals are to understand how these wetlands are affected by climate change, ecosystem change, and water quality. We used analytical techniques including supervised classification and Tasseled Cap Wetness to identify the wetlands. To find changes caused by climate change, Quick Bird high-resolution images was used to create the change detection index. Tasseled Cap Greenness and the Normalized Difference Turbidity Index were also used to assess the water quality and changes in the ecology in these wetlands. Sentinel-2 was used to analyze data from 2010 and 2020. ASTER DEM was also used to do a watershed analysis. The land surface temperature (°C) of a few selected wetlands was calculated using Modis data. Rainfall (mm) data was taken from PERSIANN (precipitation estimation from remotely sensed information using artificial neural networks) databases. Results indicated that in 2010, the water content of Borith, Phander, Upper Kachura, Satpara, and Rama Lakes was 22.83%, 20.82%, 22.26%, 24.40%, and 22.91%. While in 2020, these lakes' water ratios are 21.33%, 20.65%, 21.76%, 23.85%, and 22.59%, respectively. Therefore, the competent authorities must take precautions to ensure that these wetlands are preserved in the future in order to improve the dynamics of the ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural crop cover identification is a major issue and time-consuming effort to verify the crop type through surveys of the individual field or using prehistoric methods. To establish the scenario of crop identification, the stage of crop provides diverse spatial information about the variety of crops due to its spectral changes. The main aim of this study was to the identify the crop types and their behavior using remote sensing and geographical information system-based approach. Moreover, two main methods were applied to the Sentinel-2 satellite data in which one is random forest based supervised classification and another was Normalize Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) density estimation method through the google earth engine to procure the data in time-efficient way. This study also established the comparison between classified and vegetation index based seasonal compositional datasets for wheat, cotton, maize, and fodder crops. Study discussed the best fit technique for crops identification in the light of observed methods. Furthermore, the vegetation index ranges by the zonal statistics of the field samples were established according to crop precision. Results showed that -22.94, -43.72, 20.61, and 32.49 % dissimilarities existed in wheat, fodder, cotton, and maize results respectively, after comparison of both techniques. Although, the accuracy assessment was performed on the classified dataset for validation of results by confusion matrix accuracy assessment process using field sample data. Moreover, the vegetation index was used to evaluate crop land surface temperature to estimate the crop growth stage valuation that revealed noticeably enthralling outcomes. The results determined that the classified accuracies of wheat, cotton, maize and fodder were 84, 80, 81 and 71 % respectively. This study also revealed that the random forest classifier has used more features and information potentially during the classifier trainings but vegetation index just implies the limited number of features such as crop growing status. Rapid urbanization has become an immense problem in Lahore city, causing various socio-economic and environmental problems. Therefore, it is noteworthy to monitor land use/land cover (LULC) change detection and future LULC patterns in Lahore. The present study focuses on evaluating the current extent and modeling the future LULC developments in Lahore, Pakistan. Therefore, the semi-automatic classification model has been applied for the classification of Landsat satellite imagery from 2000 to 2020. And the Modules of Land Use Change Evaluation (MOLUSCE) cellular automata (CA-ANN) model was implemented to simulate future land use trends for the years 2030 and 2040. This study project made use of Landsat, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model, and vector data. The research methodology includes three main steps: (i) semi-automatic land use classification using Landsat data from 2000 to 2020; (ii) future land use prediction using the CA-ANN (MOLUSCE) model; and (iii) monitoring change detection and interpretation of results. The research findings indicated that there was a rise in urban areas and a decline in vegetation, barren land, and water bodies for both the past and future projections. The results also revealed that about 27.41% of the urban area has been increased from 2000 to 2020 with a decrease of 42.13% in vegetation, 2.3% in barren land, and 6.51% in water bodies, respectively. The urban area is also expected to grow by 23.15% between 2020 and 2040, whereas vegetation, barren land, and water bodies will all decline by 28.05%, 1.8%, and 12.31%, respectively. Results can also aid in the long-term, sustainable planning of the city. It was also observed that the majority of the city's urban area expansion was found to have occurred in the city's eastern and southern regions. This research also suggests that decision-makers and municipal Government should reconsider city expansion strategies. This paper synthesizes research studies on spatial forest assessment and mapping using remote sensing data and techniques in Pakistan. The synthesis states that 73 peer-reviewed research articles were published in the past 28 years (1993–2021). Out of all studies, three were conducted in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, one in Balochistan, three in Gilgit-Baltistan, twelve in Islamabad Capital Territory, thirty-one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, six in Punjab, ten in Sindh, and the remaining seven studies were conducted on national/regional scales. This review discusses the remote sensing classification methods, algorithms, published papers' citations, limitations, and challenges of forest mapping in Pakistan. The literature review suggested that the supervised image classification method and maximum likelihood classifier were among the most frequently used image classification and classification algorithms. The review also compared studies before and after the 18th constitutional amendment in Pakistan. Very few studies were conducted before this constitutional amendment, while a steep increase was observed afterward. The image classification accuracies of published papers were also assessed on local, regional, and national scales. The spatial forest assessment and mapping in Pakistan were evaluated only once using active remote sensing data (i.e., SAR). Advanced satellite imageries, the latest tools, and techniques need to be incorporated for forest mapping in Pakistan to facilitate forest stakeholders in managing the forests and undertaking national projects like UN's REDD+ effectively.
