Beginning in July 2002, the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwent an 11 million dollar renovation. During three phases of the renovation, parts of the collection were inaccessible to patrons. In order to continue to make the library's collection available, library staff created a paging system. Patrons submitted requests for needed library materials using paper and electronic forms and library staff retrieved the requested items. The article presents information about a workshop which was sponsored by the North Carolina Collection at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, to familiarize middle school teachers with the Eastern Carolina Digital History Exhibits and provide lesson plans for the site. Academic librarians are actively digitizing their unique historical records, and, like other digitizers, have always recognized the K-12 community as natural and immediate users of their sites. Digitizers know the value of their materials and believe that they will benefit the classroom. The workshop revealed the need for teachers and librarians to work more closely together in the design and use of new digital history resources. It also revealed the benefits of cooperative efforts.

Scavenger hunts are an effective, fun way of orienting new students to the library. The low-tech nature and small scale of the scavenger hunt program described here might be more suitable for health sciences libraries than other models, particularly for libraries with small staffs. This model also includes a unique optional element useful for library marketing. Objective: Clinical and research usefulness of articles can depend on image quality. This study addressed whether scans of figures in black and white (B&W), grayscale, or color, or portable document format (PDF) to tagged image file format (TIFF) conversions as provided by interlibrary loan or document delivery were viewed as acceptable or useful by radiologists or pathologists. Methods: Residency coordinators selected eighteen figures from studies from radiology, clinical pathology, and anatomic pathology journals. With original PDF controls, each figure was prepared in three or four experimental conditions: PDF conversion to TIFF, and scans from print in B&W, grayscale, and color. Twelve independent observers indicated whether they could identify the features and whether the image quality was acceptable. They also ranked all the experimental conditions of each figure in terms of usefulness. Results: Of 982 assessments of 87 anatomic pathology, 83 clinical pathology, and 77 radiology images, 471 (48%) were unidentifiable. Unidentifiability of originals (4%) and conversions (10%) was low. For scans, unidentifiability ranged from 53% for color, to 74% for grayscale, to 97% for B&W. Of 987 responses about acceptability (n=405), 41% were said to be unacceptable, 97% of B&W, 66% of grayscale, 41% of color, and 1% of conversions. Hypothesized order (original, conversion, color, grayscale, B&W) matched 67% of rankings (n=215). Conclusions: PDF to TIFF conversion provided acceptable content. Color images are rarely useful in grayscale (12%) or B&W (less than 1%). Acceptability of grayscale scans of noncolor originals was 52%. Digital originals are needed for most images. At East Carolina University (ECU), Joyner Academic and Laupus Health Sciences Libraries collaborated on a shared Neuroscience collection development policy, primarily as a reaction to state-level budget cuts. The policy aims to limit duplication in purchases at each library location but also describes the materials that are most appropriate for selection by each library and explores the usefulness of e-book purchases as a cost-saving measure. Creating a learnable, effective, and user-friendly library Web site hinges on providing easy access to search. Designing a search interface for academic libraries can be particularly challenging given the complexity and range of searchable library collections, such as bibliographic databases, electronic journals, and article search silos. Library Web designers must decide whether to present users with a single search interface-one that searches across content silos by default-or to offer an interface that exposes the various silos available. Designers must also contend with the user's entire search experience and determine how search should appear on the library home page as well as in global navigation systems. In the spring of 2010, the North Carolina State University Libraries sought to answer search design questions for an upcoming Web site design effort. The Libraries evaluated two different search interfaces to determine whether a tabbed search approach with options to pre-select silos is an effective design for end users. Findings show that a tabbed search interface is an effective design device for presenting multiple silos. This study outlines the methods the North Carolina State University Libraries used to conduct usability testing as well as observations, findings, and recommendations about effective design of search on academic library Web sites. The North Carolina State Archives and State Library of North Carolina collaborated to develop the North Carolina State Government Website Archives, a collection of captured government websites dating back to the fall of 2005 and available to the public for research. This paper explores the process by which the Web archives were developed - from the methodology of how to collect information on the Web through the selection process for determining material to be included in the Web archives and the choice of Archive-It, a service available through the Internet Archive, as the technology for running the Web archives. Challenges in the development and deployment of the Web archives are discussed, including controlling the growth of material captured, the capture of unwanted content, managing robots.txt exclusions, and educating state agencies about the importance of websites as government records. ibiblio is a digital library hosted at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill that manages to be both a repository for cultural information and a resource for community building. The project has existed in many forms since the beginning of the web, and has maintained a core commitment to open source software and tools. ibiblio's maintainers have continually expanded the project's offerings in response to the availability of new technologies and the support of financial and technological partners. The collections of the Southern Highland Craft Guild are available to visitors at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina. Here visitors can explore library and archival materials that document traditional and contemporary arts and crafts, as well as southern Appalachian history and culture. The educational experience is enhanced through the Folk Art Center's rotating gallery exhibits, crafting demonstrations, and other educational and outreach events. Creek Learning Resources Center, which is the main library at the school and how it was used as a base to begin growing the health resource collection. Aldo discussed is a partnership between Shaw University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The article presents news from chapters of the Art Libraries Society (ARLIS) of North America as of 1985. The second meeting of the New Jersey chapter was held on March 5, 1985. Members of the Northern Carolina chapter gathered for a program at the University of California. Visits to art museums were included in the Southern California Chapter's program held on October 19, 1985.
