As a collective of students and teachers, we reflect on student experiences of housing in Aotearoa. The commentary began as a reflective diary assignment from a third‐year course offered in semester one of 2023 at the University of Auckland. Using 15 of these diaries as our data, we take stock of the multiple intersecting crises of housing that are currently impacting students and other young people, and suggest potential directions for future research. The governance of water encapsulates fundamental choices about how to mediate struggles between core values and interests across society. This Special Issue illustrates how New Zealand is driving frontiers of experimentation in water governance as well as theoretical innovation in water governance research. This scholarship pushes forward global thinking about the epistemological politics of water, transformations in decision‐making and the roles of non‐state actors in water politics. This research carries forward the longstanding interest of New Zealand geographers in freshwater politics, generating analytical insights of global significance and practical relevance. We take a broad approach to thinking geographically, but a narrower view on the point at which thinking geographically is critically evaluated and assessed in our education system. The Scholarship Assessment Specification attracted our interest. The Scholarship is offered as the capstone assessment of a 3‐year Geography programme in New Zealand secondary education. We describe the institutions, actors and formats of Geography Scholarship. Our purpose is to promote thinking and scholarship as an integral part of the intellectual development of Geographers in contemporary education and beyond. Cycling has the potential to play a key role in developing environmentally and socially sustainable cities and neighbourhoods in New Zealand. Realising this potential requires understanding how different groups within New Zealand society relate to existing patterns of cycling, and how they might respond to the introduction of a range of new cycling oriented infrastructures. Commenting on articles from the special issue "New research on cycling in New Zealand," this article argues that human geographers and other social scientists have much to offer policy makers and planners in understanding how a transition to more people oriented, sustainable, urban mobility systems might be fostered. The New Zealand Geographical Society Early Career Research Network (NZGS ECRN) is a peer‐run network aiming to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for those who identify as early career geographers in Aotearoa New Zealand. This article highlights how the ECRN is working to find space for intervention and connection in an international context of precarity for early career researchers, as well as addressing the ongoing challenges of effectively representing the interests of a diverse and transient group of scholars. As a prequel to the centenary of the International Geographical Union in 2022, this paper discusses connections between New Zealand and the International Geographical Congresses as a site of knowledge creation from the 1870s up to the mid‐20th century. New Zealand featured initially as an example in the work of others at early International Geographical Union Congresses. There was fleeting New Zealand attendance before the country was represented by proxy as part of the British Empire delegation prior to the first direct university geographer attendance. John Turnbull Thomson is more known in New Zealand for his work as Chief Surveyor of Otago Province (1856-1876) and first Surveyor General of New Zealand (1877-1879). He was also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of London from 1848 until his death in 1884. Thomson was an important and early self-declared 'does' of geographer in New Zealand, prior to the establishment of university geography in 1937. Thomson's contribution included survey and mapping but he also gave public lectures on geography and contributed to debates about glaciation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article traces a line between two literatures that can usefully be drawn into deeper conversation: geographies of digital media, and geographies of emotion. Its broad theoretical aim is to ascertain what insights might be gleaned by increasingly bringing together these two literatures. The more specific and primary aim, however, is an empirical one and that is to offer a materially grounded example of 35 mothers who live in Hamilton, Aotearoa New Zealand who use digital media to communicate with their children. Particular attention is paid to the capacities of different digital media, both individually and combined, to help facilitate, but certainly not guarantee, different emotions. The research is informed by a feminist geographical reading of theories of digital media and emotion. Findings illustrate that increasingly mothers are making use of digital media, both singularly and collectively, to increase the chances of a particular desired emotional outcome with their child or children. Geographical awareness and the imaginative impulse are sibling domains of human experience. We imagine the places we have yet to visit and allow ourselves to envisage differently those already familiar to us. This set of four essays extends presentations made at a Stout Research Centre ( Victoria University of Wellington) seminar in 2015, at which two geographers and two artists reflected on the connections between geography and imagination. This review responds to Richard Peet's 'policy regimes' account of New Zealand's neoliberal experiment published in this volume of the New Zealand Geographer. It welcomes Peet's intervention, especially its comparative approach and its political economy focus, but suggests further insight may have been gained from closer engagement with the work of New Zealand geographers. The review argues that Peet misses opportunities to learn from the New Zealand case. The review subjects a 'northern' account of southern experience to a critique by 'splitting', a characteristically southern approach to analysing social change from the Antipodes that pays close attention to the situatedness of knowledge production. The fair and effective governance of freshwater is an increasingly prominent issue in New Zealand. Emerging from a complex of cultural, economic and biophysical narratives, freshwater geographies are multiple, varied and increasingly acknowledged as worthy of interdisciplinary scrutiny. In this commentary, we reflect on a series of generative spaces that we - as group of postgraduate geographers (plus supporting staff) - created to engage with the multiplicity of freshwater meanings both within and beyond the academy. Through this evolving epistemic-political project, we significantly reframed our own understandings about what freshwater 'is' and how it ought to be governed. Drawing on the work of Blaut, Marsdan, and Ploszajska, the text books written by George Jobberns from the late 1920s to the mid-1940s are scrutinised. This reveals that his first texts were influenced by environmental determinism but that he adopted some of Sauer's cultural landscapes approach once at the University of Cantabery. Since the late 1940s, the Pacific islands have had a special place in teaching and research in New Zealand's university geography departments. This paper recalls some dimensions of a 'golden age' in the study of Pacific peoples by New Zealand geographers between 1945 and 1970. Attention is focused on the 'Cumberland' school of regional geography and some of the debates this generated in the 1960s. The paper concludes with a plea for the revitalisation of Pacific regional geography, especially in the light of the very different challenges that are confronting the islands in the 21st century. This introduction to the special issue on biography and geography in New Zealand reviews some of the existing biographical and autobiographical writing relating to the university discipline of geography in New Zealand. It then frames the five papers in this issue within the boundaries of haphazard events, mistakes and accidents, definitions of geographers and definitions of geography. While arguing for further research into disciplinary history in New Zealand, it is asserted that these endeavours are of value for the future of the discipline and not only a matter of concern for those interested in the past. Our paper explores the early development of the New Zealand Geographer. We situate a series of continuities in its pages within the context of a wider Anglo-American regional orthodoxy and the articulation of a 'pragmatic sanction' for geographers in New Zealand. We argue that the journal cannot be separated from disciplinary disputes about the character and practice of geography in New Zealand. Consequently, we suggest that the journal can be understood in performative terms insofar as its pages were used to discipline academic geographers as it simultaneously aimed to satisfy a 'common curiosity' about New Zealand for New Zealanders. This paper traces some of the key contributions of Kenneth Cumberland to the making of the discipline of geography in New Zealand between the 1940s and the 1980s. It is structured around five themes: his early development as a geographer; his role in institutionalising the discipline, including his role in founding the New Zealand Geographical Society and this journal, the New Zealand Geographer; his scholarly work, especially as this relates to understanding changing landscapes; his roles in the politics of New Zealand geography; and his career long interest in popularising geographical messages, culminating in the Landmarks television series. New Zealand Geographic is one of a number of geographical magazines published in the English-speaking world that make little or no reference to work by academic geographers. It recently launched a New Zealand Geographic Trust to promote research into ‘New Zealand's life, culture and sciences’ and collaborated with four other publishers of geographical magazines to raise awareness of climate change: the work of academic geographers is again ignored. This exclusion of academic and school geography from such enterprises raises important issues regarding the discipline's public profile in New Zealand and suggests the need for greater public engagement activity by the country's geographers. This paper considers three questions: Why are fieldtrips used in geography? How does this mesh with the geographers’ own understandings of geography? What do lecturers hope to achieve on fieldtrips? Understandings are gleaned from interviews with those who run fieldtrips. There has been a tradition of fieldtrips in New Zealand and this very tradition helps to maintain them. This article begins by highlighting Mayell's (2004) call for geographers to examine New Zealand's geopolitical interests and apparatus. However, the manner in which Mayell frames his call is argued to unnecessarily limit the scope of such an examination. In supporting this claim the article draws on an exchange of letters between two officials working in New Zealand's Department of Internal Affairs and Australia's Department of the Interior concerning the administration of their respective countries passport systems. Drawing on a combination of ideas taken from critical geopolitics and Actor-Network Theory, the article argues for recognition of the mundane practice, and objects, of geopolitics as important constitutive fields in their own right. The article presents information on the life of Terry G. Jordan-Bychkov, past president of the Association of American Geographers. Few geographers have influenced their subfields as much as Jordan-Bychkov. Terry was a sixth-generation Texan, with a strong appreciation not just for Texas but also for lands of pioneer and frontier heritage. He was never happier than when he was at one of the remote places of the earth, whether New Zealand or Siberia, Finland or New Guinea, and remote borders, frontiers, and "land's ends" were his very favorite places.

William Morris Davis, president of the Association of American Geographers (AAG), has influenced the geography and geographers in the country. The founding years of AAG marks the year of publication of one of the earliest geographies of New Zealand. University geography has started in a harmful manner through the spasmodic forays at various colleges of the federal University of New Zealand and its formative years has attracted the best of British and American academic geography. The author said that the geographical cycle has kept the small academic fraternity in New Zealand with the international intellectual climate.

Commuting behaviour has been intensively examined by geographers, urban planners, and transportation researchers, but little is known about how commuting behaviour is spatially linked with the job and housing markets in urban cities. New Zealand has been recognised as one of the countries having the most unaffordable housing over the past decade. A group of middle-class professionals called 'key workers', also known during the pandemic as 'essential workers', provide essential services for the community, but cannot afford to live near their workplaces due to a lack of affordable housing. As a result, these key workers incur significant sub-optimal commuting. Such job-housing imbalance has contributed to a so-called spatial mismatch problem. This study aims to visualise the excess commuting patterns of individual workers using the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) from Statistics New Zealand. The visualisation suggests that over the last demi-decade, housing unaffordability has partially distorted the commuting patterns of key workers in Auckland. More of the working population, in particular those key workers, are displaced to the outer rings of the city. While there is an overall reduction in excess commuting across three groups of workers, key workers remain the working population with a disproportionate long excess commute. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Physical geographers in New Zealand have a tradition of applied research in a variety of contexts, including environmental management as well as soil, vegetation and landform systems conservation. In recent years this work has been given new impetus (with the promise of even greater involvement) as a result of economic restructuring at the national level, restructuring of government departments and agencies dealing with environmental and resource management and conservation, the introduction of new statutes relating to environmental and resource management, and major changes in the funding and management of science research in the public sector. This article provides an overview of the institutional environment within which New Zealand physical geographers now carry out applied work. The contemporary resource management and legislative contexts are described and structural changes that have taken place in New Zealand science over the last decade are reviewed. Research undertaken by the authors or their research students provides examples of the different types of work now being undertaken by physical geographers in New Zealand under the new legislative and funding regimes. Two examples are described in detail. The first is drawn from research dealing with catchment hydrology and water supply and has been undertaken by a physical geographer employed by Landcare Research, a Crown-owned research company. The second comes from work carried out by two university-based physical geographers into the environmental effects on coasts of a new mode of marine passenger transport (‘fast ferries’), to meet the requirements of new environmental legislation. Keith McPherson Buchanan, Emeritus Professor and first Professor of Geography at Victoria University, recently died at the age of 78. Buchanan was a prolific writer, polemicist, reviewer and commentator. His work includes nine books plus two co-authored volumes, well over 200 articles and comments, and a very large number of book reviews. As a radical geographer, a socialist, a champion of the dispossessed, and an unrelenting critic of orthodoxy, capitalist regimes and power elites, Buchanan was always controversial. His work represents a powerful case directed against some of the great evils and dangerous trends shaping the later twentieth century world. As one of the founders of this journal Asia Pacific Viewpoint (originally Pacific Viewpoint) Keith Buchanan along with his colleagues in the sixties helped establish the Wellington Department of Geography as a centre of innovative research and writing on Asia and the Third World. In this reflection on the man and his work former colleague Ray Watters argues that although best known for his work on China Buchanan’s greatest contribution was as a radical polemicist and essayist on contemporary issues.
